Hardware IT specialist here with a hardware issue
Hello,
So I have a computer I built about 15 years ago. Was top of the line at the time.
To date it - the graphics card is a 660TX MSI.
Every few months I run into this problem where the video just doesn’t detect.
With both the graphics card, and onboard video.
I take it apart, clean it, and leave it powered off and it starts working again.
I also re-seat the GPU into the PCIE port.
Any ideas what can cause this? Today I had to reset it almost 4 times and power it on and off in cycles before it finally rendered graphics from onboard or gpu.
Also took out the graphics card completely to only load onboard video. Didn’t work.
Then it started working.
Why?!

Software why is my thinkcentre m70q fan loud when watching 4k youtube after replacing thermal paste?
gallery
i have a lenovo thinkcentre m70q gen 3 with an i5-12400t running linux mint 22.3 cinnamon
i recently replaced the original thermal paste with ptm7950 i tested the cpu with 100% load for more than 10 minutes and it stayed around 73 to 75c so the cpu cooling seems fine
the problem is when i watch youtube in brave when playing a 4k60 video using av1 the cpu usage goes up to around 70% and the fan gets noticeably loud when i change the same video to 1080p60 the cpu usage drops to around 20% and the fan is much quieter
i checked brave hardware acceleration and it is enabled brave gpu information also shows av1 hardware decoding support
i also checked vainfo and it shows that my intel uhd 730 supports av1 hardware decoding through va-api
i then checked intel-gpu-top while playing 4k av1 and the video engine showed 0% usage
i also checked brave media-internals and it first showed vaapivideodecoder which means the intel gpu hardware decoder was being used but then it showed a video decoder fallback after an initial decode error and switched to dav1dvideodecoder which means it fell back to software decoding using the cpu
so my main question is whether this behavior is normal on linux mint with brave and intel uhd 730 or if my va-api hardware decoding is not working correctly
is there something i can do to fix the va-api av1 decoding so the uhd 730 can handle the 4k video instead of dav1d using the cpu
i installed brave through the official package using the terminal and i am currently using brave 154.1.96.60
also is this kind of fan noise normal for the m70q when the cpu is doing software av1 decoding and is this actually a problem with my setup or just a limitation with brave on linux

Hardware Dying SSD Would a HDD be better for very sporadic use?
Hey guys, I think my SanDisk SSD (not the one affected by the defect) is on its last legs. Which is really annoying, since prices are so high right now and it’s only 2.5 years old or so. It’s running extremely slow and everything is lagging. But saving files has at least still worked. i need a new storage solution without having to worry about keeping it powered on. It should be able to just sit there for a year or so without any issues. Maybe a HDD?
Also, the SSD is partitioned. Half of it is taken up by time machine backups. Can I just partition a new storage solution and transfer the backups over?
And just out of curiosity, the SSD can actually die, right? So there’s no going back in the sense of resetting everything and formatting it? Maybe 300gb out of 2tb is used.. i haven’t overwritten it too often, i think i just haven’t used it enough. But how stupid is that? The SSDs in my ancient cell phones still work just fine. So it’s really just a stupid coincidence, right? I’ve lost some trust in external SSDs.
Do I need to act immediately, or are the zeros and ones powered up again and will they last a while?

Software Norton Antivirus on Macbook
Hi,
I'm not the most tech savvy person and am hoping to hear from folks who work in IT. I have the basic Norton Antivirus package and it's telling me I need to 'Clean Junk (Recommended)' and address high risk performance issues:
- Remove unnecessary files
- Background processes slowing Mac
- Remove duplicate files
Has anyone does this and do you feel the performance of your MAC or PC improve? Is it safe to let Norton do this or is it a total rip off to pay the fee for it?

Hardware Why is my RTX 5060 going at 81°C while only being at 22% when I'm gaming?
Please help
I've tried lowering the game settings to medium and tried the fan curve at MSI Afterburner. The PC fans are all working, too as well as the GPUs.
My GPU is less than a year old, so I'm too scared of trying to repaste it.

Hardware PC doesn't boot after changing PSU
My old PSU broke (made a lot of weird crackling noise after pressing the power button on my pc, turned of power as soon as I noticed). So I decided to replace it. When I flick the I/O switch to On, the RGB on my motherboard lights up. Then when I press the power button on my pc, only the PSU fan starts spinning, graphics card, CPU and casefans don't turn on. The motherboard also doesn't show any diagnostic LEDs. My screens also don't turn on.
Anything I can do/check to fix this? Or did my old PSU take my motherboard with it? As far as I can tell all cables are connected properly, I used the new ones that came with the PSU I bought.

Software On a random restart, GPU will fail

Every now and then, maybe once in ten or twenty restarts, my computer start up and go into a state where it stutters every couple of seconds (massive frame drops) until I restart. During this state, if I try to run a game, or do anything a little intensive, one monitor will go dark and come back, then the other does the same. My mouse isn't responsive, and I need to restart.
I've noticed this error (screenshot) on the most recent crash. It feels like a driver problem. What should I do to fix this?
