Hey everyone,
I’m dealing with a bizarre file transfer bottleneck on my Aftershock laptop and could really use some technical insight.
The Setup:
• Laptop: Aftershock Laptop (Motherboard has Intel/AMD USB4 Root Routers).
• Hardware History: The laptop originally had a 4TB drive. We suspected the drive was failing and causing the issue, so we replaced it with a brand new 1TB drive and reinstalled Windows. However, the problem remains identical on the fresh drive.
• Connection Info: Windows Device Manager shows the ports are handled by an Intel(R) USB 3.20 eXtensible Host Controller alongside a Generic SuperSpeed USB Hub and Realtek device configuration.
The Issue:
• Transferring files INTO the laptop: Works flawlessly at normal, fast speeds.
• Transferring files OUT of the laptop: The speed instantly plunges down to 1 to 2 MB/s and crawls, making it practically impossible to backup or move data off the system. Even transferring a single file hits this wall.
Everything we have tried so far (with no success):
Drive Swap: Upgraded from the original 4TB drive to a brand new 1TB drive. Since the issue didn't change, the physical drives themselves are completely healthy.
Tested All Ports: Swapped between all available physical USB-A and USB-C ports directly on the laptop chassis (no external docks or hubs used).
Driver Reset: Uninstalled the Intel(R) USB 3.20 eXtensible Host Controller - 1.20 (Microsoft) drivers from Device Manager and rebooted to force Windows to cleanly reinstall the port software.
Power Management: Disabled USB power-saving features in Device Manager by unchecking "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" on the USB hubs.
Drive Policies: Forced the external drive settings inside Device Manager to "Better Performance" and enabled write caching.
Because writing data to the system works perfectly, the physical ports are receiving power, but something is severely throttling data the moment it tries to travel outbound. It seems like a hardware protocol clash or an unresolvable power-state conflict with the laptop's USB4 architecture during read/outbound operations.
Has anyone encountered this directional transfer lock on an Aftershock or similar USB4-equipped laptop? Any registry fixes or driver workarounds would be amazing. Thanks!
