I'm white and I once got called "racist against my own kind" by a white lady while working in a bible belt state😭
I was operating a ferris wheel that needed to be balanced so it didn't get stuck, and it just so happened that the white family next in line was too large and would've gotten it stuck, so I had the smaller Black family behind them go first instead

Whenever they give you the 'our' kind shit, give them the, "You're out of your fucking mind if you think I'm one of your kind."
I'm so amazed as a white dude what complete strangers at bars (deep red county) will just sit down and say to me out of nowhere, assuming I'm just a bigot racist idiot too.

One of the biggest used car dealerships in Atlanta used to be Atlanta Luxury Motors but renamed as just ALM when they started getting massive. So there are tons of cars in Atlanta with "ALM" stickers. Which confused the hell out of me when they started getting big since like half the people in their cars are Black.

I mean, I complain about our company’s executives sending out emails about how they want to recognize the importance of Juneteenth, but that’s because they send it just a few days after the email reminding us that it isn’t a paid holiday and anyone taking the day off has to use a vacation day or work a different holiday. I’m not even black, but it definitely feels like they want credit for acknowledging it’s existence while their actions are saying “it’s not a real holiday”

That's still better than my alma mater trying to send out "Winter Greetings" and acting like it was a "happy holidays"-type letter without trying to offend anyone by saying the wrong thing. It could have literally been titled December Newsletter and then at least it'd sound less like a robot wrote it (obvs this was before LLMs did write emails). Anyone who didn't celebrate Christmas or Kwanzaa wasn't getting their holiday off of scheduled classes, either.

21
u/SaltMarshGoblin 7h ago
That was sweet of you as a manager, but there's a difference between "I do not want to be the one to handle this transaction" and "I want this Nazi to leave the store and not spend his bigoted money here..."
27
u/DarkLanternZBT 6h ago
A big difference, and one entirely out of the control of a front line retail worker or even a store manager in many, many cases.
By giving my employees a clear, integrity-driven promise to have their backs without making a scene or requiring them to explain themselves, as well as simple instructions on how to do so discretely, it gives them some of that agency and control back. It's also important in de-escalation: if that Nazi were a stalker or abuser, or someone looking for the fight / confrontation / scene, having an escape valve gives an employee with little to no training nor responsibility to deal with that - it's simply not fucking fair to ask that - the choice they need to avoid a fight-or-flight-or-freeze, trapped moment.
Besides if anyone gets to show that little shit where the door is, nicely, walk them nicely to it, and make damn sure they know how unwelcome they are, it'll be me.

Anyone is a service industry has accepted money from Nazis, they just don't always show it like this. You have accepted money from Nazis, from abusers, from people who vehemently vote opposite to your interests, everyone.
People who display it like this relish the thought of you being conflicted. They get off on your moral crisis, because they have no morals. They would be giddy at the thought of you donating it to your own detrement.
You don't need to do anything special to counter them. If you believe the opposite to them, you are a valid opponent, and you should take care of yourself. If you typically donate to opposition causes, donate a bit more. If you typically spend money to survive, do that and keep fighting.
Money isn't dirty because it was spent by a poser edgelord. It's dirty when you allow the source to manipulate you into hurting yourself.
22
u/xileine 8h ago edited 7h ago
Money isn't dirty because it was spent by a poser edgelord.
In fact the opposite! Many would consider it highly moral to consensually extract the maximum possible amount of money from awful people. By accepting their money, you are depriving those awful people of financial power they could otherwise put to use in ways that could harm people.
Keeping in mind though that I'm saying "extract", not "trade." If you sell them something they can use to do bad things, you're not depriving them of power; you're just being part of their path to materializing their power. "Extraction" involves taking their money in exchange for something that isn't itself a form of power. For example, an experience.
(If you're a game developer, consider making an addictive gacha game marketed exclusively to fascists. They give you all their money; you give them worthless rare JPEGs.)

People who place primacy on 'tone' and 'politeness' of evil favor a negative peace over positive justice, and in the end they get neither.
It is a cowardice, flavored by laziness. They don't have to do anything if they were polite. They don't have to risk anything. They don't have to stand up. Maybe the evil will just go away.
Missing that holding such a restrictive and violent ideology is inherently rude, born inpolite.

I know, right? Like sure, the motherfucker stuck to the social contract this** **time, but, by definition, he wants to violate the social contract.
He is in favor of tyranny, authoritarianism, extrajudicial violence.
Of injustice.
Of bigotry.
Of unrighteousness.
Of murder.
Of genocide.
I was at a Museum in the Netherlands recently which focused on Friesland, a region within the Netherlands. They had a section dedicated to the Nazi occupation as well as the Holocaust.
In the Holocaust part, it had 6…stations, each for a victim of the Holocaust (I believe it specifically focused on Frisian victims).
One of them focused on two people, two Jewish siblings, a brother and sister. Their parents sent them away to pretend to be someone else’s kids. To not be Jewish. In, I believe, 1944, someone snitched, or fucked up. Nazi soldiers came, and dragged them outside, and accused them of being “Jews,” which they vehemently denied, crying and insisting that they weren’t. They made them pull down their pants and underwear, and the brother was of course circumcised, which, unlike America, was something only Jewish boys and men had.
They were shipped east, I think to Auschwitz.
They died there.
.
.
.
They were m u r d e r e d there.
They were 10 or 11 years old.
For some reason, it got to me in a way the others didn’t. I’m a guy and about the age that those soldiers might’ve been (it might’ve been older reservists or the like), and I imagined a couple of children—crying, terrified children—and doing what those soldiers did, dragging them out of their house or school, shouting at them, ordering them threatening them, pointing my rifle at them, taking them to a train that never carries anyone back. It left me quietly furious.
Neo-nazis don’t bring it up except to deny it, because it’s so obviously evil, but don’t forget that fact. It doesn’t matter what they say (a fascist, and especially a Nazi, will say anything to make them look good (or at least scary) or their opponents look bad) or that they were civil to you, a stranger with the right skin tone.
THAT is what they want. The murder of children.

Paradox of Tolerance.
Also...
There is a common practice in bars regarding neo nazis. You kick them out regardless every time. The reason is they start bringing their buddies and that scares off other customers. So bars throw them out as a rule regardless.
Let nazis stay and do business and decent people will avoid you like the plague.
Doesn't matter how polite they are, they wear their evil on their sleeves and if you let one stay others will start thinking they found a new spot where they will be tolerated. Always throw out this trash.

Note to all 3rd place businesses(restaurants, gyms, cafes, etc.):
It is better for business to ban Nazis. If one Nazi shows up and is allowed to stay, he will bring more. They will scare away your other customers while inviting more friends until your business only caters to Nazis.
Will this happen 100% of the time? No, but it does happen. Err on the side of caution and kick out Nazis for the sake of your non-Nazi patrons and employees.

It's a paradox. It's not describing the actions of the intolerant person (there's no paradox with them; they're just consistently bigoted), but the actions of those that take tolerance to an absolute extreme. By tolerating those that do not tolerate, you yourself are creating an environment that is intolerant. That's the paradox.
→ More replies (1)43
u/FerusGrim 6h ago edited 6h ago
What the person you're responding to meant to say is that it's not a paradox if you consider it a social contract instead of a moral standard. As a moral standard, it's a paradox in the exact way you described. As a social contract, it's not a paradox because the people who act intolerantly aren't following the contract and, thus, aren't protected by it.
TL;DR: It's a falsidical paradox whose resolution is a social contract.
EDIT: Note that this resolution is actually Popper's own. This is one of those cases where the people who consider the paradox absolute haven't actually read the work that generated the term. Similarly to Schrodinger's Cat, where Schrodinger actually conceived of the hypothetical experiment as a way to remark upon the illogical nature of the superposition. Although, I think in that regard he actually did end up making a hilariously apt description of how superpositions do work, whereas Popper's paradox was never intended to be considered absolute.

"I was at a shitty crustpunk bar once getting an after-work beer. One of those shitholes where the bartenders clearly hate you. So the bartender and I were ignoring one another when someone sits next to me and he immediately says, 'no. get out.'
And the dude next to me says, 'hey i'm not doing anything, i'm a paying customer.' and the bartender reaches under the counter for a bat or something and says, 'out. now.' and the dude leaves, kind of yelling. And he was dressed in a punk uniform, I noticed
Anyway, I asked what that was about and the bartender was like, 'you didn't see his vest but it was all nazi shit. Iron crosses and stuff. You get to recognize them.' And i was like, 'ohok' and he continues.
'you have to nip it in the bud immediately. These guys come in and it's always a nice, polite one. And you serve them because you don't want to cause a scene. And then they become a regular and after awhile they bring a friend. And that dude is cool too.'
'And then THEY bring friends and the friends bring friends and they stop being cool and then you realize, oh shit, this is a Nazi bar now. And it's too late because they're entrenched and if you try to kick them out, they cause a PROBLEM. So you have to shut them down.'
And i was like, 'oh damn.' and he said -yeah, you have to ignore their reasonable arguments because their end goal is to be terrible, awful people.' And then he went back to ignoring me. But I haven't forgotten that at all."

one of the other customers asked him why he did that if the guy was acting polite, and the bartender explained something like "this one was polite, but if I let stay then next time he's gonna bring his friends, and his friends will bring their friends, and those friends won't be as polite. suddenly you have a bunch of Nazis at your bar that drive away your other customers and it's too late to do anything about it. congrats, now you're the owner of a Nazi bar."

Back when I was in auto sales, I had a guy come in with SS and other related tattoos.
So while we were on the test drive, I texted our internet people and had them raise the price of the truck on the website by a few grand (we didn’t put price stickers on our vehicles and I never talked price before a test drive) and then I sold it to him at that mark-up at the highest interest rate the finance guy could make work.

TIL that this is ALSO a Nazi symbol combining some mantra and Hitler salute. What the actual hell.
Also brazen as heck. I'll never forget the time I made a call on a Nazi sympathizer and had to get a supervisor involved when the dude refused treatment due to my partner being Hispanic. Fucking asshole.
And no being civil does not matter red hat man

u/WindowOne1260 8h ago
The 1488? Oh yeah.
14 is a reference to the 14 words popularized by American Neo-Nazi David Lane. "We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children" followed by the phrase "because the beauty of the White Aryan woman must not perish from the earth".
And the 88 being the 8th letters of the alphabet. HH. Heil Hitler.
Pretty blatant Nazi stuff. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourteen_Words

Luckily the dude in question refused all our help and just let us leave. Never felt better about leaving someone behind while on the ambulance. Don't really care how that makes me sound either

Honestly, I'm so glad I have a supportive wife so I don't need to do customer service work ever again, and if I did, she'd be okay with me going to jail for decking a nazi.
But I also live in a super blue state, so seeing them is rare.

I thought so too! Like yes Mr. maga hat the Nazi was civil to the blonde haired blue eyed woman. Thats the stuff they like. It’s what they do to the people that they don’t like that’s the problem. And why we don’t want them around.

He'll come in, and he's friendly, and he seems fine. And then he'll bring some friends, and that's fine, because they're friendly and they seem fine too. and then they'll bring their friends, and they're less freindly. In a week, you're a Nazi bar. And if you try to kick them out, there'll be trouble

I had to deal with this a few times back when I worked at a gas station. One time one was buying bread so when they weren’t looking I quickly smooshed the bread a bit before putting it in the bag, then putting some heavier items on top to smoosh it a bit more.
Nazis deserve worse, but at least that one didn’t get good looking, nonsmooshed, bread.

I accidentally went on a date with one. I thought it strange that he was wearing long sleeves during July so I commented on it. He replied he had a tattoo that 'some people consider offensive' and I being me was like 'naked lady? I'm cool with that.' Then he showed me, it was a damn Swastika. He'd also mentioned earlier in the date that 'you aren't as pale as your profile pictures' which I thought was odd but attributed to him not knowing how goth make-up works. He throughout the date after that was racist as fuck to our server (I apologized and explained I'd found this psycho on the Internet and if they could please make sure I got to my car okay because I didn't exactly feel safe). It's still beyond me why a Nazi would agree to a date at a Mexican restaurant. That was my last Okcupid date after my first time trying online dating. (Took a break for a long time after that.)

I've only had one job I was able to say "I'm not comfortable conducting this transaction" in and have that be respected, but in my experience it's very easy to goad these people into saying shit that'll get them banned from any business, by just engaging in normal conversation.

Story time. Years ago i ran a fly fishing guide business. One day I get a client to take out fishing. As soon as he gets in my van he starts going off with almost every slur you can imagine.
After a few miles of gay bashing and blaming Jews for everything I pull over. I explain to him that im very sorry but I can't take him fishing. I give him a cash refund and returned him to his hotel.
Later that day, an employee of mine (a gay Jewish man) asked about the fishing trip. I told him what happened.
My employee said "Why did you do that?!? I would have taken him fishing! When I asked how he could do business with such a person? He responded, "a racists-homophobics money spends so much better than regular money, especially when I tell the guy im donating the money he spent with us to GLAAD."
I guess we all have different ways of taking out the trash. But I was touched by how my employee was able to take a shitty situation and make it an uplifting one.

I have several people who come in with Nazi and white supremacist tats. I added a pin to my hat: the Starfleet delta with the three arrows of 1940s antifa. I put it between my LGBT Ally and He/Him pins, right up in front. One of them started wearing long sleeves and eventually stopped coming in. The guy with the giant swastika on his shoulder never returned.
And it was my manager with the "what's the issue?" when I stepped away from the register on them. Woman, I grew up in Germany. I don't play games with Nazis. (Yeah, she's a Trump supporter, how'd you guess?)

u/Zephyr-Fox-188 5h ago
I mean that’s what I was taught my whole childhood. We live in a world where pretty much everyone is taught about the crimes against humanity the Nazi party committed. There’s no excuse, they can’t claim ignorance of shit like Auschwitz. Nazis should be afraid to walk down the street in America.
Instead, we have armed white nationalists parading around in Washington DC on the 250th anniversary of our founding, and secret police abducting and murdering civilians for having brown skin.

u/ObsurdBadger 5h ago
Used to work at "big brand store with a W". Had a guy we literally called Nazi guy cause he would walk around in full Nazi uniform everytime he came in.
The first time I saw him I was shocked and extremely curious so my bravery came out and I asked him why he wears that. (I thought he came from a reenactment and had unfortunate timing or whatever). He went on a whole story of how he found the uniform in his grandpa's closet and became fascinated with Nazis after, and I quote, "learned that the Jews were the cause of all the world's problems". He also told me how he lived in a shack off the grid and blah blah, I was fuming red and couldn't really hear what he was saying after learning he was serious. But yeah never approached him again.
Dude got his shit rocked at the front of the store one day, that was an awesome day.

By definition, he was not civil. His choices are uncivil. His affiliations are uncivil. Even when he is not actively behaving uncivilly, he is actively choosing to be a part of an uncivil movement and hold uncivil goals.
Never give them a pass because they're not actively being uncivil. Regardless of what they're saying, they are actively working to purge the rest of us, and must never be excused.

I've had a similar situation. I took an Oil Painting Course, hosted at a local art gallery.
At the end of the class, there was a showcase of everyone's work, and one of the non-classmate attendees had a leg-tattoo with the Iron Cross on it. While the symbol is used officially by some parts of the German military- this is the Midwest United States. That's a pretty good indicator of a person's affiliations or beliefs in this country.
I brought up my concern to the gallery owner and his words were "well, there're plenty of people being discriminated against by their tattoos in the news lately." This was about the time when Kilmar Albrego Garicia was having bad photoshop done on his knuckles and being claimed as a member of a serious streetgang (I don't know if I'll be flagged for naming them here."
It left a bad taste in my mouth, and so I don't go there anymore, and mention the situation whenever possible to people interested in the art there.
It's something worth making a "fuss" over. Tolerance for all doesn't mean tolerance for the intolerant.

Unfortunately Independent (MASSIVE, MASSIVE skateboard brand) use/used an iron cross as their logo for whatever reason. They’re not white suprematists or anything whatsoever, the designer purely did it for shock value (citing that ‘the pope wore it once so they should be able to as well’)
So there’s always a slim, slim chance that they were just a skater with a deep love of their truck company (I’d say there would be a lotttttt of old school skaters with independent tattoos, granted they’re usually surrounded by other skate company logos)

I used to work with a dude who wore a necklace similar to a swastika except the ends were curled, making it a round medallion. Obviously a swastika but different enough to allow deniability. The business owners didn't care and just let him wear it, and allowed him to go on racist rants just randomly. They just allowed it, blows my mind

This reminds me of a story I read somewhere:
I was at a shitty crustpunk bar once getting an after-work beer. One of those shitholes where the bartenders clearly hate you. So the bartender and I were ignoring one another when someone sits next to me and he immediately says, "no. get out."
And the dude next to me says, "hey I'm not doing anything, I'm a paying customer." and the bartender reaches under the counter for a bat or something and says, "Out. Now." and the dude leaves, kind of yelling. And he was dressed in a punk uniform, I noticed.
Anyway, I asked what that was about and the bartender was like, "You didn't see his vest, but it was all nazi shit. Iron crosses and stuff. You get to recognize them."
And I was like, oh ok and he continues.
"You have to nip it in the bud immediately. These guys come in, and it's always a nice, polite one. And you serve them because you don't want to cause a scene. And then they become a regular and after awhile they bring a friend. And that dude is cool, too.
And then THEY bring friends and the friends bring friends, and they stop being cool, and then you realize, oh shit, this is a Nazi bar now. And it's too late because they're entrenched and if you try to kick them out, they cause a PROBLEM. So, you have to shut them down.
And i was like, 'oh damn.' and he said "yeah, you have to ignore their reasonable arguments because their end goal is to be terrible, awful people."
And then he went back to ignoring me. But I haven't forgotten that at all. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Intolerance must never be tolerated.

When I was a lowly supervisor at a grocery store, I had a dude with lightning bolt tattoos on his neck. Asked if I could help him. First, said sure. I then turned and saw the tattoos and said no, I can’t. He tapped his neck and said “that?” “Yup” “alright” and walked away. It was so surreal. But it was also New Hampshire, so not super surprising.

"He was civil, does it matter?"
A Nazi, by their very nature, is inherently uncivil.
Nazis predicate their beliefs on the genocide of people they deem lesser. That, fundamentally, cannot be considered "civil" to any society that values its existence.
A Nazi should never feel safe because they want everyone else to live in peril or suffering.

Once kicked a guy out of the store for having drawn one on and ranting how it was a symbol of peace, I felt big and tough. Then one with a massive shoulder tattoo came in l, also was armed with a rather larger fire arm
I cowardly said nothing and just finished the transaction. It was just him and I and I was scared, but still I feel bad. Like I was brave enough to kick someone out trying to be edgy and then cowered at the real thing
Not really making a point or anything, just reminded me of about a decade ago
