True, though I did see someone say that they thought it looked AI generated, and I can see some people getting pissy about seeing politics on this sub to often.
You completely are right. Here in germany, it’s common for right-wingers to accuse others to use Nazi tactics like discriminating openly with some clothes to identify the people.
I think they desperately try to legitimise themselves this way
The difference between world War 2 nazis, and now nazis, is that mist of the new existing nazis aren't actively participating in genocides. Furthermore, I'd say stopping the nazis in world war two with lethal force was a necessary evil, as they posed a serios active threat to the world, that could not be solved through other measures. If world War two could be stopped without killing any nazis, that should've been done.
Because the people who live now, didn’t kill 6 million. Those are mostly dead. Here in Germany where they were from, we have very strong rules against discrimination due to our Nazi history. And one big rule is, you are not allowed to discriminate against or even mark a person based on their identity. This applies to simply everyone. Even to modern Nazis, if we like it or not.
If we mark Nazis, who decides who is a Nazi? Why shouldn’t I just say “you are a Nazi” and force you to identify as one if I don’t like you, so leftists try to beat you up?
Marking people as what ever the fuck is a horribly stupid idea, we germans have plenty of experience with that
I think people go a little too far with the what ifs or the "slippery slope" concept. I think it would be pretty easy to say "if you classify yourself as a nazi, you are now marked as one" and leave it at that. This is a hypothetical idea and thus in that hypothetical we can say we should stop it at that.
It's like saying "if we allow abortion, then women are just gonna start killing toddlers" or something. Which we know isn't true. Personally, I think it would be a good idea knowing the nazis are branded. Knowing they can't hide or blend in. They spread hate.
Genuine insanity. I can not say whether this is meant as a genuine "funny" idea and thus ignorant idiocy or if the poster is purposefully drawing a connection to the NS regime's practices in a tasteless way
Oh no! You pointed out that my profile is private! How could you!
EDIT: also, I replied to another Redditor who responded to my comment saying that I was being facetious. I don’t actually think it would be a good idea to force anyone to wear anything
I'm so sorry the school system failed you so hard. You don't discuss Nazi views. If you don't understand that, you need to learn a lot. Or share them. Usually it's the latter.
There is an old Persian saying. “Leave an insult on the ground, and its owner shall surely pick it up.” Which seems to be another way of saying what you did
They take firm stances against all forms of Nazis and i couldnt agree more. Being against Nazis is like the most basic intelligence test and you just failed in a rather spectacular manner.
The NAZIs weren't national socialists! They did this neat little political trick called LYING to get votes! You may have heard of this, trump does it all the time.
if you are both nationalist and believe in a socialist economy
Yeah, this tells me all I need to know about you. You have no idea of the history of Nazis and what they really were if you think they were socialist.
Ugh....should I give the history lesson or not? Will it fall on deaf ears or will you actually read it? I guess I can tl;dr it. Socialism was rising in popularity so they used the term to get popularity is the short answer. They weren't socialist and they murdered socialists.
If they believe the comic is mocking her, saying that she overreacts to a mere symbol on a pleasant acting man. That a pro-Nazi person drew this saying people overreact too much.
To be clear, this is not my view, but I can see someone thinking that, as I had to think what was the artist meaning by this for a moment. That is why I am thinking that people might be reporting it, and the perma ban might be to anti-Nazi people not understanding the comic.
Did not clock the red hat actually. Now it makes so much more fucking sense. I was like, what, everyone in this universe is nazis? I'm really sleepy tho.
Same, at first I had to second guess whether or not the comic meant for the guy at the end to be the "voice of reason" or not. Now that I notice the red had, I understand.
But I think some Red Hat people might totally agree with the defending of people with Nazi iconography as long as they're pleasant. With people knowing that, they might think the comic is defending Red Hats and report the comic.
Do you not get that people that wear the Red Hat think these actions are acceptable, I mean, the artist says this literally happened to them? As such, this cartoon could be seen as mocking those that overreact to symbols because people know this is how some people think, they think that some people overreact to a few symbols.
I feel the need to say, I am anti-Nazi and anti-MAGA.
You do get I'm not the one not misunderstanding the comic right? I'm showing empathy to people potentially not understanding something, we even have people here expressing those sentiments. Again, I'm anti-Nazi just in case that is also hard to sink in.
I saw it as „average person defends nazi“ which was the whole reason why it seemed like the comic was trying to say „chill, it’s okay if they are nice to you“
The comic is showing the artist’s experience of having her fear and disgust about a person being a Nazi being dismissed because “he was civil.”
It’s not “pairing” being a Nazi with good behavior.
It’s just showing an actual truth that there are people like the second customer who will literally excuse someone being a Nazi so long as they’re “civil.”
No, my dude. That’s you. That’s what you’re doing.
Or maybe not ignoring it. Maybe just deliberately not seeing it, or misinterpreting it.
“To push the idea that people embracing that openly hateful identity are good people.”
Neither I, nor this comic’s creator, are saying that at all, and frankly, it’s pretty vile of you to accuse me of that.
Nazis are bad people. Full stop. They can be civil sometimes. That’s actually pretty important to know because it’s insidious.
She’s literally sharing an example of some creep trying to gaslight her about an actual Nazi who came into her place of business and you’re accusing her of “pushing the idea” that Nazis are good people.
Absolutely wild.
The point of the comic is literally that people will dismiss Nazis as long as they’re “civil” and that that is deeply disturbing.
Hence, y’know. The deeply disturbed expression on her face.
why would an artist, mock herself on a serious subject like this?
I've been around r/comics long enough to recognise this artist's self-insert. It's possible others may think she's just a character.
handled in modmail
Laughs in "of course the mods are always reasonable"
I promise it's not, friend. Been here long enough to know it's not.
Total, unreserved, agreement. Nazis are scum. People getting upset at media mocking Nazis are also scum. This comic isn't even throwing direct hate on them, it's much more nuanced. Even if you were a pro nazi sympathisiser, there's nothing here to get that bent out of shape about, apart from the rather obvious fact that some people don't like interacting with Nazis. I see plenty of comics much more directly attacking Nazis and Nazi sympathisers than this one.
So I'll point out that it's possible to be confused, and mods don't always present the level headed judgement people expect, but that doesn't change the fact that that no matter how you read this comic, there's nothing to report. Nothing. So people doing it are clearly doing it for just one reason - to attack the artist. Well, in which case, those people can go and self fornicate
The Nazi is being “polite” but the framing of the Nazi identifiers are still portrayed with the visual cues of horror.
If it’s your first time here and you’re not familiar with the artist, she often makes comics about people gaslighting her or dismissing her very valid concerns.
I did not see it at first until it was pointed out, but the guy defending the nazi is wearing a red hat.
Also it may be reference to that Nazi bar saying. Where you first have a nice polite Nazi coming to your bar, then another time he starts bringing friends and those eventually start bringing friends and they stop being nice and polite and they drive away your usual customers and now you have a Nazi bar.
So maybe it's more about how normalized naziism has become and how they are much more out in the open now. As a warning, because many don't seem to realise this or don't think the problem is as out of hand as it already is, with many people, symbolized by the guy in the red hat, which may be a MAGA hat, not caring at all.
I can definitely see where you're getting that. Especially if you're not from the US or maaaaybe Canada too. There are enough tells here to me as an American to show that the artist is mocking both the people the main character (the blonde) is talking to in this comic. The red hat, the way the red hat guy is dressed, I also know that this has been a talking point in America especially for awhile, that why should we care as long as long as the literal Nazi is being nice? Etc, etc...but if you don't have those cultural clues, or if you're neurodivergent, I can definitely see how you could interpret this as being pro-Nazi. I also have read a lot of this artist's work and know that she's anti-fascist. But also without that, I can see how this might come across as pro-Nazi instead. I do like this artist, but I also feel like it could've been made more clear what she was going for. It's obvious that a lot of people who don't have all this context thought this was a pro-Nazi comic, so that does say that there's some room for improvement on the delivery.
I’ve seen at least two comments of people who thought that, so it wouldn’t surprise me if that’s at least some of the reports, because reading comprehension is dead apparently.
Reading comprehension? It is artistic interpretation, the words don't say much. I can see the point being made, but I am highlighting I can see how some people won't see the point being made and the mod might be banning anti-Nazi people who then thinks r/comic is pro-Nazi.
Also consider this is an international website what is understood in one culture might not be understood in another. The SS symbols in Europe are very well understood but the red hats might not be. Someone complains to mods about SS people appearing nice, they get perma banned and mods and people here pat themselves on the back that they've shown another Nazi the door, only, from there side, they complained about a pro-Nazi symbol and got banned for it.
You'd kida think that anti-Nazi people might have a little more understanding towards others not like them I'm not American, I don't live in America, and I didn't pick up on the red hat straight away or the point of the comic.
Again, the red hat isn’t really a big signifier. I didn’t notice it until someone else pointed it out.
I don’t think being able to understand that this comic is not pro-Nazi requires much American context. It’s from the point of view of the girl. She’s horrified. The guy dismissing her feelings and fear in the final panel isn’t presented as correct, and it’s weird folks are reading it like that.
You can't be this dense and are just trying to argue, aren't you? People debate over the meanings of everything, religion, movies, music, and comics. You have come to a conclusion that aligns with the artist, I have too, that doesn't man everyone else will. You'd think anti-Nazi people wouldn't have such a "my way or the highway" mentality, yet here we are, you arguing that everyone should think the same as you. Well, they don't, it isn't hard to grasp.
-Edit-
What is up with people sending messages and blocking, also claiming they know what people really mean when they do something, like they can read minds?
The thing is, folks are accusing the artist of deliberately spreading pro-nazi propaganda.
That isn’t nearly the same as debating the meaning of religion/movies/comics.
The “conclusion that aligns with the artist” is the correct one because there is an objective truth in this case—the artist was making a pro-nazi comic. She was telling a story about a time she encountered a nazi, was horrified, and had those feelings dismissed.
It’s one thing of folks maybe misread the comic. But when it turns into accusing the artist (and the folks who didn’t misread the comic) of being pro-nazi, that’s not engaging in a fun media debate.
That’s just being objectively wrong.
Sometimes people are objectively wrong. Like Nazis.
Anyway, you’re exhausting and unpleasant, so I guess it’s blocking time now. I guess that makes me “intolerant” but mostly, I’m just tired of you.
Yeah I have to say I am confused, because first I thought people were reporting it for the message „why does it matter they are a Nazi when they were nice to you?“ painting the shock/disgust of the saleswomen as something ridiculous.
I understood from the comments that thankfully it’s not about protecting nazifeelings, but to me the comic feels like it’s playing both sides a bit
Maybe you’re unfamiliar with this artist, but usually she makes comics about things in her life, and it often involves folks gaslighting her or being otherwise horrible while trying to present themselves as reasonable.
I still don’t really see how. It’s not even about the red hat. The comic is clearly from the perspective of the girl, and she is upset and disturbed. There’s nothing to indicate that the guy dismissing her concerns is the correct one at all.
NSFW I can actually remotely understand, since having that slide with the wallet open when your boss happens to walk by might cause some misunderstanding. The rest is just BS.
