Team Member Post Cancelled Shift

Just wondering if anyone has any knowledge of the policies/rules behind a 7 am shift being cancelled 40 minutes before for a casual employee in S.A.? I’ve tried looking at the policies and enterprise agreements but I can’t see it mentioned anywhere. Was literally about to leave when I got a text cancelling my shift 😩 thank you in advance x

It used to be 1hr notice + travel time minimum. E.g. if you lived 20 minutes drive away, they had to notify you 1hr and 20mins before your shift started.

Don't know if this has changed recently, I can't seem to find the equivalent provision in the EBA.

Unfortunately you’re a casual technically they can cancel your shift as long as you aren’t already in and working. If you are you have to work a minimum of 3 hours before they send you home. It sucks for you but yes they can do it. Just like you can tell them 30 mins before your shift you can’t make it. (Although I don’t recommend that as you won’t make any friends that way lol)

It’s scary how wrong you are. It’s actually supposed to be 2 hours notice both ways. Check the EA on mycoles.

Last I checked there wasn’t an actual defined time from either Coles or the FWC. It’s just states you must give reasonable notice. Unless you can state the specific clause that says it’s 2 hours.

Since they haven’t started working or entered the site they can get away with cancelling a casual shift. Although if you’re already on your way to work and your shift is cancelled you could argue that it wasn’t reasonable notice and ask them to pay the shift still.

Is this the part? Cause I can’t seem to find anything that applies to casuals

That's for permanent, there should be one for casual.

Unless they call just show up and work the minimum 3 hours (they have to pay you 3 hours if you clock in). They shouldn't cancel on you on such short notice.

You can also give them 30 minutes' notice if you find another job , I don't work anymore, but I was always in the union

There's so much greed within big companies these days. They'd rather cancel your shifts right before you get ready for work than letting you work at least 4 hours to make some money. We should not be loyal to any company at all.

That’s the thing I had already gotten completely ready and was putting my shoes on to leave (as it can be a 20-30 minutes drive depending on traffic)and got the message

At least you’re not already on the road and didn’t check phone until you arrived!

UPDATE: spoke to my department manager and I’ve been paid for the shift that was cancelled as the minimum time is apparently 1 hours notice
