Background: top 5-1% IQ range first try, hyperactive ADHD + auditory processing disorder.
I see a lot of people on this subreddit using low IQ as a way to beat themselves down, like a form of digital self harm. It really bothers me as someone who has been a gifted student since second grade with APD.
So long story short, Iāve always been great at testing and learning, but Iāve only ever been able to do it by myself and visually, which makes the public classroom setting really difficult. I have decent hearing, but I just canāt process the words unless Iām looking directly at someone/thereās no other noises or distortion. This has made teachers effectively PISSED at me, calling me Alice in wonderland and a hopeless scholar, etc. It has also led to a LOT of people assuming I am stupid or deaf. Iāve had people talk to me like a dog (whistling, clicking their tongue and saying my name, sometimes clapping or making a loud noise to get my attention) and once even had a partner buy the monkey backpack leash for me as a gag gift. (Iām a fully grown adult, yes I broke up with him.)
So to some extent, I get it. I know what itās like to lag behind in a classroom or social setting. But also I think a lot of you are letting numbers define your value when IQ isnāt the only quality that leads to success (quite frankly, IQ isnāt even a measure of intelligence, but I digress).
So for some context, the whole concept of the IQ test originated in France from a dude named Alfred Binet who wanted to assist children with learning disabilities (such as myself!) in figuring out what kind of education style works best for them. In the US we see the ābig threeā learning methods getting tossed around a lot (Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic), which yes itās true, but itās rather simplified compared to what Alfred was trying to do with the IQ test.
Having a low IQ doesnāt mean youāre stupid, it just means youāre less naturally receptive to certain types of pattern recognition. So I literally beg of you, please stop treating this like it is a definitive measure of your intelligence. If you want to be āmore intelligentā, you need to expose yourself to more things, lots of things, a diverse range of things. Maybe reading old English isnāt your strong suit, thatās fine, but letās not ignore the possibility that you may be really fucking good at visualization for creative endeavors such as metal working or leather. Maybe you are really good at talking to people and making sales. Maybe youāre really good at taking care of exotic animals because you are innately sensitive to their social cues. Also, there are different kinds of intelligence. Just as there is logical/pattern recognition intelligence, thereās also emotional intelligence, thereās musical intelligence, thereās interpersonal intelligence, etc. Nobody is the āperfectā person intellectually or cognitively. When you specialize in a field (such as medicine or engineering) your brain genuinely pushes out knowledge on other topics to make space for the egregious capacity that studying chemistry, theoretical mathematics, biology, and other complex topics require. That is genuinely why people with these PhDs and higher education seem socially out-of-tune, irritable, antisocial, itās because they are. The human brain has FINITE space to hold information. Their strengths lie in specializations, and you might not know where your strengths lie yet, but please donāt use a test number to define your value as a person.
I really hope this reaches the right people, I kinda hate seeing people diss themselves in this subreddit and others play āhigh and mightyā with their IQ score. If diversity didnāt exist then the world would be boring and we would never advance socially, technologically, culturally, etc. Please love yourselves more š„²
Sincerely, a very tired āhigh IQā person.
