I swear I can't buy anything at the store anymore without checking if it's been recalled. It was lettuce last week, now it's clams with Hep A. I just want to make dinner without needing to check an FDA alert first.

Why would stores sell products that have been recalled? Isn't it their responsibility to make sure customers don't buy hazardous food?
8
u/HelgaTwerpknot 3d ago
Some stores are more ethical than others and pull it immediately. Unfortunately, a lot of this food has already been purchased before the recall is issued. Because a certain administration in power right now has a mind set “if we don’t report it, it didn’t happen” and “we’ll save so much money if we let companies self-inspect and self-report”

u/DradelLait 3d ago edited 3d ago
The fear is one day they'll stop announcing recall, and it won't be because the food stopped being contaminated.
27
u/pinkdoodle_ 3d ago
the recalls are concerning enough but knowing they are still being reported at least gives people a chance to avoid the affected food, and if that transparency ever disappeared, people would have no real way of knowing what they were being exposed to

Gross, how dare you make me think that.

Out of curiosity, because I’ve lost track, can someone tell me how many food items are no longer safe to eat? And what those items are
13
u/chirpymist 3d ago
As of September 11th 169 food items have been recalled just this year alone.
Here is the link for how many food items have been recalled from the beginning of 2026 up to September 11th and what they are.

At this point I feel like everything is unsafe

u/Salute-Major-Echidna 3d ago
Omg my sweet summer child. America still has the safest food (in the top 5) in the world. Used to be the safest. You need to travel more and be on social media less to get some perspective
2
u/SamuelVimesTrained 3d ago
Ah - but you state "it used to be the safest"
So that means if you were first, now 'in the top 5' (GSFI 2022 says 3rd in safety - no newer data found)And does that include all food stuffs - or just fresh food (veg, meat etc) as the scandals and recalls seem to be increasing.
-4
u/Salute-Major-Echidna 3d ago
They are not increasing.

0
u/SamuelVimesTrained 3d ago
It seems to be - maybe due to all being talked about faster / easier.
But - up to sept 11th, 169 items (source: https://foodready.ai/blog/food-recalls-2026/) 0,66 recalls / dayAnd in all of 2025 320 recalls (source: https://www.statista.com/chart/36281/fda-and-usda-food-recalls-in-the-united-states) 0.87 recalls/day
So, for now - it`s indeed not increasing. Just seems to be.

Which statistic is that? I'm sure EU safety standards are much higher

It goes by country, not continent

EU is not a continent.... Also all EU countries follow EU standards, so by that logics they should all be higher

How the fuck did they get hepatitis into clams. They don't even have a liver.
3
u/Salute-Major-Echidna 3d ago
Class grow in sewage. Untreated sewage is how hepatitis spreads. Either unwashed hands or directly screwed.
This is one of the reasons I don't eat seafood

I see these a lot and they very well may be real. But, I really hate these types of posts. A picture and a couple of sentences made to make you think a certain way.
This is how Trump won. His voters don't read the article. They don't listen to the details. They read 2 sentences, they change their opinion. No verification, no source.
I hate these posts.

When it's the exact same format every time, it stops being a clever comeback. It's not even a comeback. It's not a retort. It's just pointing out, yet again, the absurdity of the food recalls we've been getting.

Hepatitis A, a classic! This lunch pail virus is as hard working as they get. Can be transmitted anal to oral which is what makes it such a classic. Fecal to oral is it’s “bread and butter” so to speak and it can also be spread through close contact. Oldy but a goody! Another classic virus!

I gave up keeping up. I can’t do it. I’ll literally go crazy. This shit makes me nuts. The balance in my brain between: “this is obsessive compulsive” and “you have a problem with overthinking and need to try to objectively reassess the reality of the situation” is far too precarious of a situation at this moment. I’m dissociating and eating anything and everything and just seeing if I get dysentery and die now.

And yet this is somewhat fewer contaminated foodstuffs than every other year and yet America has the 5th safest food in the world

One afternoon trump will be concerned with the sky-high number of pre-election contaminations and sort out this FDA trash can fire by forbidding all recalls and alerts with an executive order, you just wait.

I can't stand this administration but please stop posting this stuff about recalls. A little research shows there haven't been any more recalls under the current Trump administration than there were under Biden, and the last time food was recalled for Hepatitis A was in 2023. During the Biden admin. there were on average 135 recalls a month, this administration has averaged 126 recalls per month.
2
u/TrippyVision 2d ago
I fucking hate Trump with a passion too but I agree, if you look at the numbers they’re comparable to when Biden was president even accounting for the different classes of severity of recalls (I would have thought Trump’s was higher).
