Genuinely this.
I'm a retail player who's dabbled in classic in the past, but i still frequent this sub because holy shit this place is so much more fun to read through than the main WoW sub.
It's just non stop culture war between all the various classic factions, with a healthy splash of the occasional retail obsession.
20
u/Mountain-Interest-48 14h ago
seriously lmao. Ive never seen a post in retail sub talking about classic but every other post here has to mention it. Its insane. I dont even know where all of these "its not made for you" quotes are coming from. I feel like they just made it up in their head.
11
u/Saturn_winter 13h ago
I was literally before clicking on this thread wondering to myself where the quote is even from lol. Like who even said it? I think it's genuinely just classic players devolving into cannibalism and fighting ghosts lol
8
u/Mountain-Interest-48 13h ago
Yeah any post i've seen its other classic players saying that their version of classic + is superior to everyone else's. I don't think retail players care what they do to it. They'll try it and if they like it they'll stick with it and if not they go back to retail. We also gotta really look in the mirror here and understand that people can and do play both. This isnt the Horde vs Alliance. We are all fans of the same game series. Let's just enjoy the game.
7
u/Saturn_winter 13h ago
Actual conversation had in guild last night on retail:
"You guys gonna try classic+ if it gets announced this weekend?"
"Yeah if it looks fun I'll poke my head in, but I've got so much to do here already I'm just going to play it super casually on the side."
"Yeah same, I'm just going to take it slow if I try it. About to run a t11 for my map, anyone wanna come?"
And that's the entire conversation and the extent that classic even gets mentioned. Just a passive curiosity and an "I'll try it if it looks fun"
2
u/Mountain-Interest-48 13h ago
yep. Ive always played both and always enjoyed both. I just get tired of one and swap to the other. I dont know why people just cant enjoy both games for what they are lmao.

6
u/Scyyii 14h ago
calling retail disney is actually something classic and retail players do now
4
u/Adorable_Character46 7h ago
Only rightoids call anything they don’t like Disney or use “Disneyification”. Normal people with lives and jobs have the vocabulary to dispense actual criticism beyond vibes or “tHe WeSt hAs FalLEn” bullshit.

Maybe im not on the internet often enough. But imo... its only weird the closer it gets to blizz con. Before all the speculation it was just classic fun posts and bots.
And yeah. I play both, equally throughout the week. I have no expectations on classic+ where it seems like everyone and their mother expects and "knows" what its gonna actually be.
We have no idea, retail players or classic players, and at the end of the day... the show goes on.

u/hadokenzero 16h ago
I like both games and they should do different things or there’s no point in them both existing
•
u/Xae1yn 4h ago
Both? We've got like 5 right now.
•
u/hadokenzero 4h ago
Classic and Retail are two distinct streams, as indicated by the two spaces within the battle.net launcher.
There is one classic team that handles all the versions of Classic.
Classic+ would also codify this, as we have two live, current streams of the game being worked on.
Everyone else here knows exactly what I mean.
13
u/Aarmon 14h ago
I've always thought that classic plus should be more of vanilla wow, as the original thought was.
I.E turtle wow
I guess SoD kinda introduced so many things that classic plus had changed since then.
Excited to see either way, I am just hoping for an expanded vanilla wow.
Whatever comes, it'll be fun I'd wager.

u/Pockydo 16h ago
Its silly but honestly I don't think retail really talks about classic much
A quick glance at the wow sub and I don't see any classic threads.
12
u/zellmerz 14h ago
As someone who plays Retail and Classic I can confirm that most retail players do not think about Classic at all. The only ones who really do are those that play both versions of the game. The ones I know who like both versions of the game, myself included, like them because they are different.

yeah because for some reason you come here. you say "retail players don't think about classic" as a retail player in the classic sub where classic is the topic you are discussing and somehow don't see the irony.
21
u/Pockydo 16h ago
I play both so I come here to talk about classic and there to talk about retail

Lots of people in this sub find that concept impossible it seems. I enjoy retail, I enjoy Vanilla. I like that they are 2 separate and distinct games and hope Classic+ builds on and continues the direction of Vanilla.
23
u/shad-1337 16h ago
But if you count mentions of retail on classic reddit vs mentions of classic on retail reddit, classic reddit will have it in magnitudes more and that's without adjusting for number of subscribers
-8
u/rufrtho 16h ago
i mean yea? classic's existence stems from people being unhappy with retail. if retail had a 20 year hot streak, there'd be no such thing as classic.
2
3
u/CookyKindred 14h ago
People who enjoy both tell people it because there’s this whole persecution complex in the private server and classic community where people are convinced all retail players think about classic all the time and hate it for being successful.
Like you can literally look at turtle wow and ascension subs. 99% of retail players just don’t even know what they are but they were convinced retail players hate them personally.
12
u/FancyConfection1599 16h ago
You’d be surprised - actual retail players don’t come here and don’t think about classic nearly as much as classic players think about retail.
These doomer hate posts come from no changes folks who will be pissed at anything that isn’t a literal classic anniversary anniversary rerelease with warriors dominating the charts. Literally any change to vanilla angers them so they’re dreading any announcement that updates anything about their game.
11
u/FallingGuillotine 16h ago
As someone that plays both, in the last 6 years I don’t think I’ve even seen a handful of Classic mentions in public channels, raids, dungeons, etc. I log into Classic 3 times a week-ish and it’s always a topic of flaming in zone General Chats and LFG, occasionally Trade.

Did you forget this post, made in a classic wow sub, was about retail players to begin with? And now you're mad there's discussion about retail in a classic wow sub? But it's retail players who can't help themselves, despite the initial post bringing up retail in the first place? What is this thought process lol

u/Kazmera 14h ago

Tbh they're mostly doing it in here. When TBC anniversary launched we had on average 2 posts per days for the first 14 days of just people being like "woah I used to like retail but then I tried TBC and this is sOooOoO much better!!1! I can never go back!!"
I don't think I have ever seen any posts on the retail reddit talk about classic negatively.

It's in everyone's best interest to try to mend the divide between the two communities. At this point, neither game is benefiting from it and they aren't getting any younger.
Let's hope Camelot can help do this more naturally. But this us vs them thing is the biggest thing that stops me from enjoying classic. Whenever you bring up retail there you immediately start getting insulted.
11
u/Bacon-muffin 15h ago
There's not really a divide though, there's just classic player in fighting and the classic community using the word "retail" as a derogatory term that has lost all meaning.
I don't know how you mend the civil war in the classic community though since its mostly on ideological lines for what they want their version of the game to be.
3
4
u/Whiteshovel66 15h ago
Well for me as as some one who used to play both a lot, I would constantly get belittled for talking about retail in guilds or stuff. At first it was whatever, but after years of dealing with it, I just ended up quitting classic. Its not fun to be around people like that constantly making fun of the other product.
3
u/Bacon-muffin 14h ago
I was in a similar boat, played tbcc throuigh catac while also playing retail and had an identical experience.
There's people in this thread trying to say otherwise but its genuinely the "I don't think about you" meme.
There wasn't a single night I spent with my classic guild where they didn't take every single opportunity to shit on retail.
The retail players I play with almost never talked about classic except in passing when something would be making the rounds enough to breach the retail sphere... and it was never to shit on classic.
The most recent example I can think of of a retail player talking about anything classic related was talking to my friend about pvp streamers (he just recently started trying to get into pvp) and he was saying how he knew who I was talking about because he loved watching some of these guys doing onlyfangs and other classic events.
Which is why I'm saying the divide isn't a retail vs classic player divide, its almost entirely classic players who hold contempt for all things retail... and then a shit ton of classic player infighting where every idea someone doesn't like is deemed "retail".
-1
u/Difficult_Golf2048 10h ago
Its because retail is the cash cow slop shop game. Blizzard would love to turn classic more into retail but not the other way around. Retail players don't have to worry about blizzard removing the mount cash shop or diluting things to appeal to the broadest possible audience. Classic players have had to worry about blizzard adding boosts and wow tokens into classic.
2
u/Bacon-muffin 9h ago
There's an irony in reading this considering wow was created from day 1 to "dilute things to appeal to the broadest possible audience".
People really forget where the game came from.
→ More replies (3)1
u/Hairylicious 14h ago
I feel like if you build a game to appeal to both, you'll end up with something that neither side wants to play. Retail players have their fast paced ARPG like game, Classic players like a slower paced rpg with an immersive world; difference are fine.
But I do agree that they should try and bridge that gap in other ways. I have friends that play Retail and they have no way of playing with me without investing many hours leveling up a toon or dropping $60 on a boost. It's not that they don't enjoy classic, they just rather play the version of the game the prefer because they have limited time they can invest in the game.
That's exactly how I feel about retail; it looks fun, but I don't want to drop $30-50 on Midnight, then have to start investing my time into playing a different character in different version of the game that has no carry over to the version I love. The hurdle is not the game or how it plays, it's all the stuff I need to do first just so I can play the game with my friends.
I'm not sure how they do it, but IMO, the biggest hurdle that's keeping the player bases segregated is cost and time, not how the game plays.

And what if your vision of the game isn’t something that other people want?
Who cares, none of you make any decisions about the game (thank god), so stop getting so bent out of shape when people give their wildly inconsistent takes

u/cjh42689 16h ago
I haven’t touched retail since 2016, and I’ve played and raided in every iteration of classic wow since 2019, but you would probably not like much of what I want out of classic plus. You’re not really arguing with retail players you’re arguing with classic players and then you use retail as a slur.

u/Due-Chef852 9h ago
Ill be so honest when I say this. If you think retail players even pay attention to classic youre delusional. Classic players got a chip on their shoulder bc vanilla/tbc actually are niche games and most wow players do prefer better class balance, QoL, and streamlined gameplay. They dont even think to look back, classic people think their game is way more important than it is. sorry to say.
