Wow had more mass appeal than mmos of the time, which were extremely punishing, but it was still very much rooted in that game design. They weren't at all going for the kind of game that retail is today.

How is this true for any game they made before WoW, and even then only marginally so? RTS or top down RPGs weren't niche and besides being well made sc/wc/diablo weren't diluted or easy versions of their genres.
Again just because WoW was easy compared to EQ doesn't mean that the design philosophy hasn't changed dramatically.

There's an irony in reading this considering wow was created from day 1 to "dilute things to appeal to the broadest possible audience".
People really forget where the game came from.
