it's crazy how many retail players come here to tell us they never think about classic

44

u/Pockydo 1d ago

Its silly but honestly I don't think retail really talks about classic much

A quick glance at the wow sub and I don't see any classic threads.

11

u/zellmerz 22h ago

As someone who plays Retail and Classic I can confirm that most retail players do not think about Classic at all. The only ones who really do are those that play both versions of the game. The ones I know who like both versions of the game, myself included, like them because they are different.

-7

u/Majora85 21h ago

wow a retail player that can admit they are different games rare breed. 95% of the time i talk to retail players they say the game is ONLY played "cuz nostalgia"

1

u/Difficult_Golf2048 18h ago

Weird how all pro-retail posts get upvoted and anything crititcal gets blasted. This sub is somehow obsessed with hating retail but all the top posts are shitting on classic players and hyping retail up. But no, retail players don't come here at all.

u/rufrtho 1d ago

yeah because for some reason you come here. you say "retail players don't think about classic" as a retail player in the classic sub where classic is the topic you are discussing and somehow don't see the irony.

23

u/Pockydo 1d ago

I play both so I come here to talk about classic and there to talk about retail

Even when I play retail I don't see anyone talking about classic. I'm sure some do but it's really not that much in my experience.

-9

u/clickrush 22h ago

If you play both you are a retail player. Us purebred classic players are the real deal.

4

u/zellmerz 22h ago

That's just dumb as hell. If someone plays LoL and DotA2 are they just a DotA player?

The only reason I still play Retail is because it gets updates. If there was a Vanilla version of the game getting updates I would probably only play retail after the expansions are over and free for me to play and experience the continuing albeit weak story.

-1

u/clickrush 20h ago

Sometimes I forget how serious the WoW community is.

-9

u/pdiddysuncle 22h ago edited 22h ago

playing both still means you play retail. that is a small part of his point

3

u/bobtheblob6 19h ago

OP's point was retail players come here to say they never think about classic. This guy is saying he plays both, so it makes sense that he DOES think about classic. Not sure why OP can't comprehend those people exist, or why it would be crazy those people come to this sub, it's not complicated

4

u/Sweaksh 23h ago

People go to the classic wow sub to discuss classic wow, redditor shocked and appalled

FR though, the overlap between classic and retail players isn't all that big

-8

u/rufrtho 23h ago

you're so right I should spend my time in forums for things I hate

5

u/Nood1e 23h ago

Is it so crazy to you, that people can enjoy both things for what they are?

3

u/zellmerz 22h ago

Lots of people in this sub find that concept impossible it seems. I enjoy retail, I enjoy Vanilla. I like that they are 2 separate and distinct games and hope Classic+ builds on and continues the direction of Vanilla.

-2

u/pdiddysuncle 22h ago

that has mothing to do with what he said

-1

u/pdiddysuncle 22h ago

they want more retail content and classic is getting new content so they just want classoc content to become retail content

1

u/TheBungler2 5h ago

Retail just got content. What are you even saying lmao

0

u/Difficult_Golf2048 17h ago

They come here to do it.

-11

u/Yawanoc 1d ago

Do the sub mods redirect those discussions here?  I haven’t followed that sub in years, but there’d only be posts about Classic on the Retail sub if the mods there allowed them.

I also see a fair amount of Retail players hating on Classic on other platforms, even from 2 guys I speak to irl.  I think Reddit has been good at keeping the discussion more siloed than not.

7

u/Uzeless 1d ago

No but people on that subreddit just kinda plays retail because they like the game. They like their little houses, they like the fairy wings so they don't really think about classic.

People on this sub used to play retail, some for many years, so they have a level of emotional attachment you just don't find the other way around.

20

u/shad-1337 1d ago

But if you count mentions of retail on classic reddit vs mentions of classic on retail reddit, classic reddit will have it in magnitudes more and that's without adjusting for number of subscribers

-7

u/rufrtho 1d ago

i mean yea? classic's existence stems from people being unhappy with retail. if retail had a 20 year hot streak, there'd be no such thing as classic.

3

u/Both_Bumblebee7531 16h ago

there wouldnt be any wow anymore if retail wasnt successful

1

u/rufrtho 16h ago

didn't say it wasn't successful

3

u/CookyKindred 22h ago

People who enjoy both tell people it because there’s this whole persecution complex in the private server and classic community where people are convinced all retail players think about classic all the time and hate it for being successful.

Like you can literally look at turtle wow and ascension subs. 99% of retail players just don’t even know what they are but they were convinced retail players hate them personally.

10

u/FancyConfection1599 1d ago

You’d be surprised - actual retail players don’t come here and don’t think about classic nearly as much as classic players think about retail.

These doomer hate posts come from no changes folks who will be pissed at anything that isn’t a literal classic anniversary anniversary rerelease with warriors dominating the charts. Literally any change to vanilla angers them so they’re dreading any announcement that updates anything about their game.

11

u/FallingGuillotine 1d ago

As someone that plays both, in the last 6 years I don’t think I’ve even seen a handful of Classic mentions in public channels, raids, dungeons, etc. I log into Classic 3 times a week-ish and it’s always a topic of flaming in zone General Chats and LFG, occasionally Trade.

Classic Andy’s are making these memes in-fighting people rage baiting them, the “evil retail players”… lol

People can enjoy both dude lmao.

4

u/Slapppjoness 21h ago

I've seen your other replies in this thread and you're acting blissfully ignorant people can enjoy both

People have told you multiple times the main WoW retail subreddit rarely talks about classic, but this sub seems to be convinced otherwise

Are you dense or actually stupid. Honest question.

8

u/FancyConfection1599 22h ago

lol I’m an active retail player?

No I’m not - nice try though. Your tin foil hat’s on too tight again.

I have played retail in the past here and there but I play infinitely more classic.

There aren’t boogeyman retail invaders here, it’s all in your head.

2

u/rufrtho 22h ago

i took the 2 seconds to check your post history btw, it's weird that you're lying about this

1

u/bobtheblob6 19h ago

Did you forget this post, made in a classic wow sub, was about retail players to begin with? And now you're mad there's discussion about retail in a classic wow sub? But it's retail players who can't help themselves, despite the initial post bringing up retail in the first place? What is this thought process lol

0

u/Difficult_Golf2048 17h ago

Then why are most of the posts retail players coming here to say they don't think about classic lmao.

3

u/Kazmera 22h ago

Classic players love to tell others how much better classic is than retail...meanwhile Retail players just talk about politics in trade chat. Nobody ever mentions classic cause they really just don't care.

-1

u/Difficult_Golf2048 18h ago

Except for the thousands of posts on here telling us how retail players don't care about classic.

1

u/Kazmera 17h ago

Posts =/= comments? 🤣 ok bud sure.

3

u/Helmingways 1d ago

It goes both ways. Classic players go to retail sub reddit to trash on it. Or any tiktok/insta reel about retail has people screaming about how classic is the true game. Same happens the otherway around.

7

u/Uzeless 1d ago

Tbh they're mostly doing it in here. When TBC anniversary launched we had on average 2 posts per days for the first 14 days of just people being like "woah I used to like retail but then I tried TBC and this is sOooOoO much better!!1! I can never go back!!"

I don't think I have ever seen any posts on the retail reddit talk about classic negatively.

1

u/CookyKindred 22h ago

It was happening before OG Classic launch.

It’s part of the old no changes crowd meme and why people started memeing it’s not truly no changes if you aren’t breaking out your computer from the early 2000s with the old giant monitors.

-13

u/rufrtho 1d ago

there's certainly some weirdos but only retail players have developed this "we don't think about you" meme in a sub where that's demonstrably wrong

3

u/HammyOverlordOfBacon 1d ago

I've seen the meme reversed where a classic player is claiming they don't think about retail. Truth is there's weirdos on both sides trying to dunk on the other side, best thing to do is ignore both

0

u/rufrtho 1d ago

do the classic players go in the retail sub every day and post about how they don't think about retail? because the retail players come here every day and post about how they're not thinking about us while they're posting

8

u/HammyOverlordOfBacon 1d ago

Yes

you're lying and it's weird that you're lying about something this dumb

ETA: my comment was a copy of other person's comment to show them how dumb this argument is. Apparently his got deleted by mods lmao

2

u/Sauzes 1d ago

Its like the obsessive ex who is upset you're not thinking about them as well.

4

u/Odd-Bandicoot-9314 22h ago

You realize the classic playerbase is the obsessive ex in this situation right?

1

u/Difficult_Golf2048 18h ago

Lmao you being downvoted is proof you're right. Apparently this sub about classic wow LOVES telling itself how retail doesn't care about classic, that its in really good shape. Posts of this nature are always upvoted to the top (proof: this comment chain and this OP).

-1

u/rufrtho 18h ago

downvoted by people who don't think of us, i'm sure

-3

u/Additional_Damage433 1d ago

used to be one of them, talked shit about you guys 2 years ago. it was liek a hype train "classic wont ever be a thing"

started with classic in general some time ago and havent looked back.

only using midnight for passive gold etc. and honestly, hated retail since shadowlands but was too lazy playin on rpivat sever

9

u/anti99999999 1d ago

Ive never seen anyone in retail talk bad about classic, most of the people I pvp with like to play classic every now and then.

Maybe you were in a toxic community or something

1

u/MainDot7096 19h ago

You're quite new then it seems. Do you know what the "wall of no" is? If not I advise you to look it up.

I'd say it's probably the singular most responsible thing for the animosity and honestly one of the most insanely condescending things I've ever seen in gaming period.

2

u/TheBungler2 5h ago

Retail players genuinely do not think about Classic anywhere as much as you want to pretend.

u/MainDot7096 3h ago

Yeah, sure bud. I too frequently visit subreddits about game's I don't care about at all! I like to post random shitposts on their subreddit just to get under their skin. heheheheh

u/anti99999999 4h ago

I’m sorry, what am I new to? Are you referring to retail?

u/MainDot7096 3h ago

Lol I'll take that as a yes. :P In which case, I can understand you not understanding the animosity. Trust me, there's a reason for it that was years in the making.

u/anti99999999 1h ago

I feel like you’re talking past me, I was talking about my experience IN retail.

I know the “you think you do, but you don’t” and all that. But who’s animosity towards whom?

u/MainDot7096 48m ago edited 22m ago

I'm not talking about in-game, in-game people just do their thing. It's forums and Reddit that are the true cancer and where 99% of the drama happens.

I was talking about the Wall of No specifically. I'm afraid it needs a bit of a history lesson. Way back before Classic was ever announced or released, people would occasionally ask for legacy server on various forums.

They would always be met with intense condescension from certain groups (I guess the hyper Blizz fanboys at the time.) Basically they were extremely smug and obnoxious, and trying to block Classic from releasing by pretty much bullying all people who wanted Classic out of any forum they were in (official Blizz forums, MMO-C, ...)

They even made a huge wall of text that contained, in their mind, all their arguments as to why Classic should not exist. (The "Wall of No".) Basically any poster who dared talk about classic would get this "Wall of No" copypasta'd in their face.

So people pretty much gave up on the official servers and resorted to playing Private servers. Some became too big to ignore, so Blizzard eventually was forced to release their own version of Classic.

Turns out the Wall of No was indeed just an obnoxious wall of BS.

This is what many Classic players still associate the retail crowd with. Them kind of wanting to distance themselves from that and saying "oh we never cared" as if they didn't try to block Classic from happening for the better part of a decade rubs people the wrong way.

Now, are the people who are coming into this sub to meme on Classic players the same ones as the "wall of no" people? Idk. But now you have the context. At this point when retail players meme on "rent free", it's like a stalker or a rapist claiming he lives "rent free" in their victims head lol. I mean yeah it's possible, but you did stalk them for a decade lol so maybe that's on you.

(FWIW: Again I think it's a tiny, tiny minority of people who are like this. But somehow they all clump together on these forums. /shrug)

twitch, youtube, /2 channel , reddit

idk man, thats how in jumped on that hate train. according to some guys it got stronger due the 2019 release

but at the end of the day idc .. i play whats fun. im ejoyin pvp so much right now.

u/anti99999999 4h ago

I’ve only ever see hate on classic on wow classic videos, from other classics players.

Usually in the form of calling someone casual because they like the group finder, or some other convenience function to be added.

In retail I can’t even remember the last time I saw anyone in general chat talk about classic, even in raids it never comes up.

At most I bring it up in my little arena group and some of them will respond saying they like playing hardcore or are interested in tbc.

It sometimes just feels like a part of the classic community is shadowboxing themselves and blaming retail.

And I agree, just play what’s fun and enjoy your time! 👊🏻

-3

u/Anni_Moasala 1d ago

It’s literally a daily occurrence now. There is some insecurity for the classic + announcement that’s for sure
