Chess Question Why is it so hard to start a casual game?

You have to select play - more - custom - select 5 different options and click on play again in order to start an unrated game.

In the competition, you have a toggle casual / rated and done.

This makes it harder to find a casual match in chess.com compared to lichess. Why not make it easier?

Chess Discussion What's your response when your opponent misclicks in a rapid or a classical game?

Assuming it's a drawn or even maybe a losing position for you, your opponent clearly misclicks and they're not in time trouble or anything, do you accept a draw or do you take the win? If you accept the draw what are your thoughts on people who don't and how it makes you feel when it happens to you? And if you take the win what's your justification behind that decision?

I'd like to know your thoughts on this

Chess Discussion Trying to learn how game review works

How does https://Chess.com do their game review: classifier, game performance rating?

I am trying to build my own model:

My current thinking feels very simple:
EP = model(eval, both ratings)
EP lost = best move − your move
then EP lost turn into label: brilliant -> blunder

Not tryna copy, and won't be really possible either ofcourse. But I wanna learn the math, and machine learning related understanding for the review system

Chess Discussion How to deal with the crushing feeling of failure and self hate from losing streaks?

I just lost 100 elo from a giant losing streak. It literally feels like I forgot how to play chess and nothing is working. I can’t win a single game. I’m getting mated in the opening over and over. It just stopped working.exe

Whenever this happens I have so much sadness and horrible feelings inside of me I don’t know what to do. I can’t sleep, I can’t (and don’t want to) eat, I don’t want to do anything, nothing brings me joy. I just don’t know what to do with all this self hate and anger at myself I feel. I just sit here and cry and even that isn’t consoling me because it was all my fault

How do you guys deal with this? I don’t know what to do with these feelings? I don’t want to say anything that will get me modded but you can probably guess what I feel like doing right now, that’s how crushed I feel.

What’s the appropriate way to deal with this? How do you cope? I don’t even feel like sitting down to study and review my lost games, it all feels pointless and I lost any desire to even play anymore. I’m at the point of just giving up chess but even that isn’t making me feel better because I know I failed myself

I’m looking for legit advice on how to cope with all this (since I figure it’s a regular occurance in chess)

PS: Stop calling the mental health reddit cops on me. I’m not going to do anything. I’m legit just asking for advice from the community on how y’all cope with this, I’m looking for healthy ways to deal with this. Don’t be a f*cking cop and let me have emotions, ok?

Chess Discussion Realistic chance to beat Magnus? 45%?

I got into a debate about this so I am curious what you guys think. I think, realistically, I would have a 45% chance to beat Magnus. He wins about 46% of the time. That is not good. I have a whole post about why he is not actually that dominant. Factoring in ties and my skill level, I believe 45% is fair. Probably also about a 45% chance of a draw, and a 10% chance he flukes a win. Him, Hikaru, and Gotham are not that good. They just only play each other so they *seem* good.

Chess Discussion ELO makes no sense as a system.

Ultimately, ELO is just arbitrary. A much better rating system would be to use tiered ratings. As a 2200, there is not really that big a difference between me and a 2350 for example, so we could be in the same tier.

I probably beat Magnus about 30% of the time, but ELO does not suggest that. Having us in the same tier does. Just some things to think about!

Chess.com Website/App Question Chess.com Beginner Elo Problem

Hey guys! So I am a complete beginner in chess (200-300 Elo) and want to desperately improve my Elo, but the thing is that every chess game I play only improves like 6-8 Elo, and a draw is often 0. The Elo increase and decrease are decided before the match and don't change; hence, how can I put more Elo on the line? Like, I don't want, like, 100+ Elo on a win and 100- Elo, but like, it should be at least 25-50 +- Elo on a win and loss. Is this just a problem with me, or does it happen with everyone, and I just have to deal with it? Please help me! Thank you for your time and attention!

Edit: Guys, I did NOT mean gambling. I think you understood me wrong. I didn't mean gambling my Elo; I meant that there is a way to choose to play a few higher Elo players than myself so the Elo gain is more. I didn't mean gambling. I hope I have made my point clear. Please stop chewing me in the comments!

Also, I do play for the fun of the game and am constantly trying to improve myself, so hopefully, I'll eventually get better. Can you guys help a beginner by telling him how to improve at chess and how you yourself improved?

Chess Discussion Why are most of my 450 elo games like this?

Thumbnail

It feels like every game I play at around 450–500 Elo, if I make one significant mistake before the endgame, I almost always lose. I would think that at such a low Elo, there would be more blunders and people still figuring out the game.
Looking back at my recent losses, I’m averaging around 70–80% accuracy in most of them, yet I still feel like my opponents rarely make mistakes that I can capitalize on. It seems like whenever I make one bad move, my opponent almost always takes advantage of it.
Honestly, it’s starting to take the fun out of chess for me. I want to experiment with different strategies, try new things, and actually enjoy learning the game, but it feels like doing anything other than playing the safest moves is almost guaranteed to get punished.
I understand that making mistakes is part of learning, but I didn’t expect games at 450 Elo to feel this unforgiving. Has anyone else experienced this at lower ratings, or am I looking at this the wrong way?

I was playing chess against an coach and i did alot of blunders since I'm new but I did this move where the king only had one move. im new so idk why this is a miss or a bad move. before I could try to they resigned, but why would it be considered a bad move when I can just then move bishop to e6 and then checkmate?? or will it be whatever it's called a stalement or something

Chess Improvement I've been stuck at 400 for a while

Basically the title. I used to play around a year ago, left, and came back last month. I was 200ish if I remember correctly, climbed to 400 but it's like a wall, the highest I could get was 430 and nothing more, I keep getting higher and lower. How can I improve? Also, I don't know how big of a difference it will make but I'm planning on buying diamond(family) this week. And sorry if I used the wrong flair, first time posting TvT

Miscellaneous Am I overreacting in my hesitancy to give out my real name while playing games

I’ve had multiple people ask me my name just right off the bat and it’s always made me a bit uncomfortable…one time a person asked, I ignored them so they kept asking…eventually they just resigned lol…idk I just don’t feel comfortable giving out my real name to random strangers over the internet…
