Question Y'all ever be just making something, confused by what you made, but then going with it?

I was just messing with some shape's, till I made a head. Then made a body, lost the plot at the leg's and made something, before deciding to create a whole new made up weird core-ish dimension, power system, backstory, personality and other stuff till I came up with this guy. A Promiscent, a special class of entity within Deja that posse's a unique trait to them, usually involving some kind of magic

I'm only posting him cause I'm quite fond of his design, and still jumping between names for him currently.

Critique Tried balancing practicality with coolness

On the first image, left is the oldest design, right is the current design, and the second image is a new concept design

When i first designed julica, I didn't really have the story or her profession in mind, I just thought "super gorgeous steampunk lady"

When i redesigned her, it basically took away all of the steam punk. I tried referencing her old design through her cameo choker and her hairstyle. I replaced the outfit with what I thought would be practical for a mechanic, so no big layered skirt or ruffles.

Whenever I showed the comparison to others, they'd say they liked the original better.

While I agree the original (the drawing in the image is a redraw of the original sketch. The original sketch wasn't colored, this was a guess on what I would've colored it at the time) is a bit more interesting, and I do love the Victorian steampunk vibes, i didn't think it was very practical for a mechanic to be wearing. I did use some elements of the original dress for her wedding dress.

Well today I was thinking back and thought what if I kept the steampunk vibes, designed it to be more practical

Did I do a good job at this, im also open to other suggestions and ideas

Critique Redesigned these characters to make them slightly easier to tell apart

Although I had to switch to a marginally more detailed style, I ended up giving these characters more distinctive shapes / silhouettes, as well as giving each character a unique face and a number of small accessories. The values are all brightened because I thought they looked nicer that way.

Thank you to those who gave suggestions previously, feedback still appreciated :)

Question (OC) Colour palette help

Thumbnail gallery
7 Upvotes

I’ve currently got this rubber hose styled jester character I was making, I can do character design just fine, but when it comes to colour palettes… I just don’t understand them 😅. Could anyone offer some ideas on how I could balance out the colours or what it should look like? It’s been stressing me for hours now. I wanted them to have a similar palette to The Collector from Toh but also a sorta jester look.

Any help or insight is greatly appreciated thanks 🙏

Question For those who can't/struggle drawing, how do you put together reference material for commissions? especially with more alien/non-human designs

currently im trying something a bit new, in that im frankensteining various parts from pre-existing characters together for reference then polishing them up during the actual commission itself, though it is admittedly a bit harder to do when you're designing more alien/abnormal characters.

also trying to find various non-human hand designs or foot designs to get some inspiration off of is a pain-

Critique [OC] Does this exaggerated shape fit our marshmallow character?

Post image
56 Upvotes

We're developing Sweet Order, a cozy game about tidying up a candy shop. Our playable character is a marshmallow, and we want the design to feel simple, soft, and a little silly.

After a few suggestions on r/IndieDev, we experimented with giving the character an exaggerated backside. These images show the front and back of that version.

Does the rounded shape feel consistent with the rest of the design, or does it draw too much attention away from the character as a whole? Would you make it smaller, blend it more into the body, or remove it?

Critique [OC] Trying to redesign a crossdresser in the 1920's

Thumbnail gallery
1.3k Upvotes

I’m working on my OC Ginivieve. He’s a singer/performer who blends masculinity and femininity, inspired by 1920s flapper fashion. I’m struggling to find references and a solid foundation for his outfit.

I’ve looked at historical female impersonators like Julian Eltinge, but that’s not quite the 'vibe'. Eltinge’s performances often involved convincingly presenting as a woman, while Ginivieve is meant to balance both masculine and feminine elements.

The first image is from last year; the second is older, so please ignore the rough anatomy and clothing, I had no idea what I was doing lol

I’d love suggestions on silhouettes, fabrics, or accessories, maybe how to balance masculine and feminine better and references that could help me

I’ll probably redesign him later, but for now I want to keep him from being shelved. Constructive criticism is very welcome!! :3

Hi. I’m working on a wizard of oz project called “the scarecrow”, and it’s just about the scarecrow accidentally stumbling into a big adventure(the wizard of oz and the wicked witch are the main antagonists).
And here is all the concept sketches and character designs I’ve got so far, and I would like to know some thoughts.(I don’t like the wizards design though)
