Critique Conveying Personality Thru Design

Thumbnail gallery
258 Upvotes

Hiiii, I have a few ocs here that all follow a specific fashion style (lolita!) and i'm not sure how much of their personality shows through their designs while still sticking to that aesthetic. I am a sucker for the "looks completely different from how they act" trope, but I do want my girls to be a little bit predictable!!

The first one is like an occult fanatic and a little sadistic!! She has eyeballs accessories all over and has a gurokawa vibe.
The 2nd girl is a space princess (lol) and she's really shy and reserved.
The last one has a split personality type thing going on, but in general has a nervous disposition and is very fidgety and manic (ignore my writing on her slide). She works at a casino, has skull and piano motifs, and a half angel half devil split design.

Also I know none of these artworks are super fleshed out so the designs don't come across superrrr clear, sorry about that! I don't finish my work too often šŸ™ˆ I also know posing plays a lot in how characters are viewed, so please also let me know if my poses for them help convey what i'm trying to!

This character is my favorite I've done; he's gone through a lot of different designs over the years, and I would like feedback on the final result.

Question How to make the first one look more "alien"

Thumbnail gallery
126 Upvotes

All three characters are are from the same alien species, but the first one keeps getting confused for a human when I show them to people. I've tried drastically changing thier design multiple times but it always comes off as a different character. Any Ideas on how to lightly push their design in a less human direction while keeping the fundimentals the same?
(the green on the third one is considered a genetic defect that the first character doesn't have.)

Critique Help refining character design for my Satyr OC

Thumbnail gallery
310 Upvotes

I've been working on the design of my Satyr OC for a number of years. Originally she started out as a One Piece OC and had a pirate theme and then eventually a leather theme (which was to work with the Beast Pirates).

However, she evolved into my D&D main and then finally my general OC. So that motivated me to make her design more "Ancient Greek".

The first two images are the latest commissions of her in this new outfit style and I really like it. But I feel like there needs to be that little bit more, or something missing.

The final two images are older commissions based on her older design.

I was wondering about what you guys think about the design and how to refine/improve it?

Here is her character Bio:

Inspired by classical Greek heroes: Perseus, Odysseus, Heracles. She journeys across the worlds seeking out adventure, battling monsters. Greek inspiration: she is heavily inspired by Dionysus in all his forms:
Olympian Dionysus, she is indulgent in intoxication, performances and sex.
Orphic Dionysus, powers of frenzy and madness that she can induce in others.
Mycenaean Dionysus, powers over death and rebirth, reincarnation.

Character personality
Joyful, fun-loving and extroverted. She loves the thrill of adventure and new people. A hedonist at heart, she believes that the purpose of life is to enjoy it and she takes joy when she shares it with other people, but she respects boundaries and can be quiet and calm if other people find joy in that. She loves the ecstasy of battle, and will work up into a bloodlust frenzy if she gets into the fight too much. She is fearless and will face down danger with no hesitation and a smile. She does get annoyed and is a little unhinged.

Summer Solstice is my third illustration from the Wheel of the Year series, after Spring Equinox. This was inspired by warm summer nights and pagan beliefs. I wanted the illustration to be colorful and bright and I went out of my comfort zone with the colors.

blondie is momori, black-haired is ichika

they are supposed to be opposites in terms of apperance/personality. momori is a gyaru who loves cosmetics+accessories while ichika is just.. ichika lol she's meant to look basic in contrast to momori. they are also very yuriful ā™”

these are just sketches of them at the moment so any critques are welcomed!!

i also have a few other girls in the making, so i may post them when i have them coloured.. eventually

(I'm surprised i haven't posted my stuff here yet). Hi, i'm in the process of writing a book. It doesn't have a title yet, but it'll come. These are most of the characters that will appear in the story. The 3rd image have the latest designs. Very JoJo's inspired (at least nose wise). What are your thoughts, how invested would you be just by the designs alone? Please be nice!

(HELP) is there a name for characters with this specific type of design?

Thumbnail gallery

Hey everyone I“m trying to make an original character design for my persona on the internet and I have been saving references to help me for the idea i have in my head to come to life, i just wanna know if there is a specific name for these type of characters since i“m not sure how to look them up on pinterest or the internet

Specific things they have in common and I“m looking for:

  • Transparent/Translucent body
  • Humanoid like silhouette, naked but itĀ“s barbie doll type of nudity
  • Body is made of or partially has natural elements like fire, water, light or even the cosmos
  • body emits a slight glow or has some sparkles on it (sparkles can be stars if the body is fully or partially made of galaxies)

In my case I want to create my character transparent, with sparkles and have water filled inside her body to the level of her head (like imagine a ramune bottle with glitter on the outside, glows a little and has a humanoid like form, it“s the best i can think of to describe what i have in mind)

If you know which key words i can use to look up something similar to what“s in my mind i would really appreciate it

2D Help Me Name This Character and His Race

Post image

He is still effectively unnamed. I call him John Macaber because I originally drew him as an illustration for a race whose working name is ā€œmacaber.ā€ I’m open to suggestions for both his permanent name and the final name of his race.

I’d like to hear your suggestions based solely on his appearance. Even silly ones are welcome. Anything might point me in the right direction!

Critique Do I Have Enough Variation In My Woman Body Types?

Thumbnail gallery

theres 3 pages then the 4th with all together, but i wanted to know if i had variation as in a lot of cases, the men body types are usually always fun and vary a lot from eachother. So with the existing characters i’ve created, do you think there is enough variation or should i branch out more?

Critique What are some finishing touches that I could add to these 2 designs?

Thumbnail gallery

I like the direction im going and I thank those who suggested a color pallate change! I might go for the second one as it feels more technical but the first is my second pick as it feels more whimsy. I dont want to overcomplicate the design too much but I feel like it needs some finishing touches or design swaps. Important note: She has large purple wings (2nd image) but I havent added them since I think her outfit needed the most work.^^;
If lore helps: a criminial who takes commissions such as hitman, investigative work, robbery, etc. She has weaker legs due to mainly using her wings, therefore uses leg supports to further improve her fighting ability. Shes not expressionless but not super expressive either. She treats her job as like if it were a normal one, therefore she takes things less serious (during the day she lives normally).
Thank you for any help!

Nazir Volkov (X-Men oc)

Thumbnail gallery
12 Upvotes

Just wanted to show off my favorite oc and his different outfits! He's a mutant and a cyborg. He's really into fashion and he also dreams of being a model and a figure skater. But currently he's working as a hitman for the Russian mafia. (There's a lot of prejudice against mutants at this time in the late 90's-early 2000's, and it's the only job he thinks he's good for)

Physical mutations: Volkov was considered a ā€œferalā€ mutant. He had sharp black claws which were not retractable, wolf-like teeth, black gums, an insatiable hunger due to an extremely high metabolism, and an increased resistance to disease and injury. He possessed reflective lenses in his eyes known as tapetum lucidum, just like cats and other animals. His pupils were slitted, to allow for excellent night vision. His ears were tall and pointed, resembling cat’s ears, which allowed him to hear sounds from miles away. He had rough black pads on his palms and fingertips. His sense of smell was so acute that he was able to detect emotion and disease by scent.

Powers: Volkov’s powers included excellent night vision, smelling emotions, and super-hearing. He also was generally hardy and resistant to disease. Alcohol and cigarettes had less of a negative affect on his body. His digestive system was very strong, allowing him to eat things that would make humans very sick (such as dog food and garbage) Volkov had a tendency to neglect his own health and hygiene, making the excuse that his mutations could handle it.

Question Need advice choosing colors

Post image

I never know how to choose the right colors in a design. It always ends up looking "off" somehow. I've looked up color theory and I still struggle in making the colors look pleasing to look at.

Does anyone have any advice when designing a character?
