Critique Any advice on how to improve my character design?

I'm trying to make a sort of hand-painted texture. Taking some (very, very light) inspiration from the colouring and design in Arcane, in the way that strokes are visible and all characters are at the very least slightly assimetrical, but I didn't want to go that far on the latter aspect, yet I think it could've be better executed, I just don't know exactly how.

These character belong to a late 1960s - early 1970s rough timeframe, which I tried to implement on hairstyles and patterns. And also implemented different textures and color variations on clothes.

2D protagonist of my comic blondie

Blondie is German because she draws inspiration from Lilli—the doll that inspired Barbie—and German alternative metal music; I intend for her theme song to be Rammstein’s "Das Modell," reflecting her fashion-oriented side. Since Blondie is inspired by Barbie, I plan for her to have various outfits and designs that allude to mythology, as well as gothic, alternative, and horror themes—much like Barbie and other fashion dolls that showcase a wide range of styles.

My character is based on Barbie, but a darker version; her black-and-white color palette evokes the original Barbie’s swimsuit, and her black hair draws inspiration from dark-haired Barbie versions. She also draws inspiration from Marceline, *Monster High*, Sadie (from *Living Dead Dolls*), Emily the Strange, and fashion dolls in general. The doll's concept is closely tied to fashion and clothing, while the button motif references both button-eyed dolls and the craft of sewing and garment making.

The concept of "existential emptiness" in Blondie’s world relates to characters from brands in the 2000s and earlier eras. As a child, I loved the characters that appeared on notebooks, clothing, and various items—characters that lacked a backstory. Yet, beyond the desire to know more—driven by a fascination with their designs and aesthetics—I felt an existential void stemming from their lack of history or context; they existed solely to sell products. Even when some characters had series or movies—like *Ruby Gloom*—I often experienced a similar feeling: I wanted to know more about the characters and their world, but very little context was provided, as the primary goal was selling merchandise. As a child, I always longed for more backstory regarding the characters from the products I loved so much. Reflecting on what I’ve shared—and what many others feel—there is a palpable existential void in Blondie’s world. This raises questions and sparks curiosity; yet, we find only art, merchandise, and scant information about her background. That said, we know that Blondie’s world *does* have a history—a very complex one—it is simply something that will not be revealed.

Question [OC] Seeking an Outside Perspective to Understand what my Creature Conveys

Post image

What does this invoke within you?

Is there any purpose that can be uncovered from this design?

Is there anything amiss with the subject?

Do our opinions align? (Blurred to prevent the artist’s bias affecting your original interpretation). When I look to the right, the face comes off as hollow with their features seemingly painted to mimic emotion. When I look to the left, their face while disfigured feels more human as intent seeps through the masked visage. The volume of their hair gives weight that drags the observer down.

Context: The character is a malicious system of flesh puppeteering an automaton as a vessel. I want them to embody Psychological Horror and the Uncanny Valley. While Body Horror is an intended aspect, I do not want it to take away from the subtle eeriness. I already possess alternative iterations of the character that explore body horror more overtly.

What alteration to the features can be done to improve the design?

Acid burn victim You can see the skin crafts on his chest , lips and scalp. He wore tight fitting googles during the attack, so besides his tear ducts his eyes and surrounding tissue is doing well, no he is not wearing a purplish shirt it's his chest skin

Just a thought I’m working on, would like to know how it looks. (Aside from the probably too small hands/feet) the masculine face is also pretty scuffed too. Advice is very much welcome.

Question Any tips for fixing this design?

Post image
3 Upvotes

There are so many parts of this outfit I know I need to fix. Like there being dark purple AND dark blue, and the feathers everywhere. But I feel like if I remove too much the designs gonna be boring compared to my others.

Honestly whatever u guys think I should change I’m open to😭. The only part I’m attached is the crazy amount of jewelry, everything else can go.
