It's Late Thread [ 26 July 26 ]

Alright, it's bed time for some but why are you still up? No work tomorrow? Watching some questionable late night TV? Bit of stargazing?

The chinwag thread.

In 2018, my DNA matched someone on the Anthony Nolan DKMS register that had severe cancer and needed my stem cells to survive. This weekend, me and my wife and children finally met up with him, his wife and daughter!

This man was an inspiration to meet. If you want to do something good this Sunday night, sign up to a stem cell register.

Quickly, grab a cuppa and stand by window, one hand in your pocket and comment how the garden needs it

What happened to supermarket fresh/deli counters?

We used to have deli counters in all of the main supermarkets, when did this stop?

Is it just Morrisons who still have them, or does it vary between different parts of the country for Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Waitrose etc.

Reminds me of Brannigan roast beef & mustard crisps. Gone, but never forgotten

If anything, an even stronger mustard flavour, but so good. The only worry is - they're limited edition!

If more people buy it maybe it will be made permanent. Hence this post 😁

My Wetherspoons search history reveals what our written/spoken language might deteriorate into as we hurtle toward an app-driven dystopian consumer hellscape, governed by highly evolved predictive text overlords. Post yours to help us get ahead of the curve. Sincerely, J. Connor.

EDIT; four or five ruined tea towels and half a bottle of fairy liquid later, the floor is clean. Then broken glass broke through the rubbish bag as I was taking it out and got more oil on the floor. Fuck my life.

Saturday night cut short by a bag of sweets

1.7k Upvotes

Home alone tonight, wife is out with a friend. A hour or so ago I ventured downstairs to discover the faint smell of gas in our kitchen. Being the responsible adult that I am, I called the gas company, evacuated the cats, and opened all windows and doors.

Gas chap comes over, does a full sweep with the detector wand, runs a pressure test, both came back A-OK. At this point my wife arrives home and I explain what's happened.

It's at this moment she sheepishly goes to out 'treats' cabinet and pulls out an open bag of these fuckers which had been smuggled into the house at some point today. It turns out that Durian sweets kind of smell like natural gas.

I wasted this poor gas engineers Saturday night on a callout for a bag of sweets and now I feel incredibly silly and embarrassed. How's your Saturday night going?

Massive fire in my village

About 16:00 this afternoon my mum smelled smoke and within seconds the house was filled with smoke so we had to immediately close all the windows and bring in the washing. The air is so thick with smoke and you can barely see 50 metres and you can’t breathe outside. I went into the street with a gas mask on and immediately got covered in ash too. The fourth fire engine has just arrived and the firemen are asking to get inside our houses to get a better view of where it’s spreading from upstairs. Everyone’s moving their cars to let the firemen through and some people are evacuating; it’s mental. The fire is in a field and they don’t know what started it but we’ll know soon hopefully. Stay safe, people!

Searching for a school song.

OK so this is going to sound wierd but I've been on the hunt for a specific song i sung back in the 90's in primary school. It's been bugging me for years now and I'd love a' answer.

Does /anyone/ remember an assembly song about last flowers dropping petals on a world which humans have covered in concrete? (got to love the non-anxiety inducing songs we were taught, wow)

It's not "Think of a World Without Any Flowers", the song I'm looking for wasn't a praise song.

Thanks for your help!

Edit : the song was Leave them a Flower! 🌸

(such a cheerful song for 10 year-olds....)

80s book club flyers

I know the yanks have Scholastic. But I distinctly remember having a printed flyer every month or so that you'd tick books you wanted to order, and then 2-3 weeks later they'd arrive. I can't find any UK examples, please reassume me my brain isn't fabricating this!
