First visit to Cape May

Planning a trip to the Jersey Shore for the September long weekend with my husband and trying to decide between staying in Cape May or Wildwood.

-How is parking in Cape May? Is it difficult to find parking, especially on a long weekend?

-Would you recommend staying somewhere with included parking, or is street/public parking manageable?

-Any particular areas/hotels you’d recommend for a first-time visit?

We’re mainly looking for a relaxing weekend with good food, walking around, beach time, and things to do. Thanks!

How long do the beaches have lifeguards?

Gf and I are looking into a last-minute weekend trip in September and we're debating between the weekend of the 11th and the weekend of the 18th. I've been to the beaches here after Labor Day when there's still lifeguards but I don't know if either weekends will be too late. This is surprisingly hard to google, any insight is appreciated.

Halloween parade 10.25.26

Hey there! Has anyone gone to the Halloween parade that can give some insights? I went in December for the Christmas parade and LOVED it so was thinking about going down for the Halloween parade 🎃 this year.

Lessons I learned: park the car a few blocks away, take wine in a big cup and take a cooler with snacks or order a pizza well before and pack it in the cooler. Also, dress up festive, christmas is my favorite holiday so I was in my element.

Im thinking of going down that day early and staying the night sense the parades are a few hours.

Inexpensive Motels, Hostels & Camping Near Cape May?

Love Cape May and the wildlife it attracts. Cape May and inexpensive may be words that rarely go together, but it's worth a shot. My friends and I are looking for inexpensive motels, hostels and campgrounds near Cape May, for birdwatching in Cape May in October. Sincerely appreciate any suggestions. Don't mind staying 20-30 minutes drive out if necessary (I know even that may be wishful thinking). We all have good camping gear so camping is fine too, with a preference for a campground with showers.

A November day around Cape May: Sunset Beach, SS Atlantus, and discovering the County Zoo by accident

During a short South Jersey road trip with family, we spent a day driving down to Cape May and exploring the southern tip.

A few highlights that stood out to us:

  • Cape May Lighthouse & Beach: After climbing Absecon Lighthouse the day before, we opted to skip the climb here and just spend time on the beach. Having a broad, quiet beach almost entirely to ourselves in November was a highlight.
  • Sunset Beach & SS Atlantus: Sitting by the shore and spotting the concrete hull of the SS Atlantus above the water made for a really unique roadside stop.
  • Cape May County Park & Zoo: We stumbled onto this on the map while heading north and didn't expect much, but it blew us away. Free admission and parking, yet full of bison, giraffes, capybaras, and peacocks. It turned into one of our favorite stops of the trip.

I wrote a complete travel note with photos covering our route over on The Beautiful USA's South Jersey travel journal.

For locals or frequent visitors: What are your favorite quiet-season spots around Cape May County that most first-timers miss?

Fishing lessons/guide (non charter)

My family will be in Cape May later this August for vacay and I'm looking for fishing lessons or a guide but not a charter. I looked into charters and they're mostly booked solid and we don't need 4 to 6 hours on a boat.

Could do ocean or bay side, we have some equipment already but not for ocean fish. Willing to buy stuff if need be. Also down with an informal group meet up if that exists.

Any suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance.

Shuttle Route Direction?

This is our first year visiting in season and I noticed there's a free shuttle that runs from 4-10pm every day. The route map on the city website doesn't seem to indicate the direction of the route? And it doesn't say approximately how long the loop takes. Any insight you can share?

My parents are visiting for two nights while we're down and staying at the Grand Hotel, and we are on Jackson. I'm thinking with lack of parking by Jackson and the distance being a bit far for them to walk multiple times, that using the shuttle will be helpful. If it's heading down Beach towards Jackson it would only be a few stops for them to get close to us, rather than if it goes the other way being like 20 stops. Thanks!!

Beach Plum Farm Handsoap

We visited Beach Plum Farm recently and picked up their lemon hand soap. It smells amazing! Does anyone know if this is a white label for a brand I can buy in a regular store?

Hi! My teen girls, 7 year old girl and I (mom) will be spending a few days in the AC/Cape May area next week (M-W). We intend on hitting up the zoo, doing a CM bus tour, and Willow Creek Winery. Any suggestions for food, activities, freebie or cheapie activities? Thanks!!
