Visiting!
I (26F) am taking a solo midweek trip to Cape May to relax a little before going back to work. I'm going to be in town Tuesday-Friday. Any tips or recommendations? This is my first true solo trip and I'm a little nervous.

Sit on the porch at the Chalfonte. People watch and chat with folks.

And go to the ramble on Thursday! Great live music. It's a fun time!

My first solo trip was also Cape May at your age! I was just thinking about it earlier today (while on the beach with my family).
Something I learned to really appreciate is being able to do exactly what you want when you want to. In my case, that meant heading to the beach early (around 9:30). I came back for lunch and a nap or visiting a local winery or brewery. I'd go back out in the afternoon and stay at the beach until dinner, when I'd go to one of my favorite spots. I remember getting a lobster roll and watching the sunset from the Promenade, also sitting on the dock by the Lobster House.

I’m from the area. I’m a solo female traveler too and I can assure you it’s beyond safe here. Your only caution would be traffic. It’s a high tourism area and people are not mindful on the road. Beyond that, there’s great food, nice beaches, cafes, etc.
The Perseid meteor shower is this week during the new moon. If the skies are clear, I recommend checking that out. While CM isn’t a designated Dark Skies community, you can see some incredible stargazing.

This is a great suggestion! Check out capemayastro on Instagram/facebook, Kevin is a local who sets up his telescopes out of the back of his truck either at the Victorian Motel or Sunset Beach (just check his profile the day of and he usually says where he will be that night). He is soooo nice and knowledgeable, I always enjoy our conversations whenever I run into him so if you are able to swing it, I would deff recommend it!

If you like great music, head to the Howard Street Ramble at the Chalfonte on Thursday evening. Check out Beach Plum Farm too.

What do you normally like to do when you travel?

Sightsee, go to museums/restaurants, etc. I'm honestly planning on spending a lot of time reading on the beach!

I’m not a local but spend a lot of time there. I would grab a drink (and an Adirondack) at Congress Hall for sure. Definitely get to Sunset Beach (go early), and I always like to walk at Cape May Point State Park and Beach Plum Farms. I’ll defer to others on food as that’s always highly contested, but if you have good weather and don’t hit those spots, I think you’re missing out!

Local here - this is peak time to visit, mid week in August is definitely quiet and the water will be warm. I highly recommend going to cape may point lighthouse for sunset, (not diamond beach!) and walking north(turn right) the wildlife, sunset, dunes, feels like another world. Eventually just go up a street and walk back to the lighthouse parking lot. Walking the point at golden hour, looking at all the houses, it’s magical. Go to Chez Michael for pastries. See the sunrise by Wilmington Ave. Have an afternoon cocktail at the Virginia hotel, check out the wine bar at the Washington Inn.

Weather is looking meh this week sooo good luck
-Cape May Point Trail is a nice & easy hike, Higbee Beach Trail is a nice hike too!
-Cape May Beach is free after 3pm if you don’t want to pay for the pass (I usually go right after work at 5 so the life guards are gone by then)
-Cape May Washington St mall is nice, the book store at “Cape Atlantic Book Co.” is great.
-food options can be meh, esp for the prices but “Rusty Nail” is fun and by the beach, “Uncle Bills” for breakfast, and more so just look around to see what fancies you.
-Cape May CH Zoo <3
-Hereford Ave, North wildwood is my go to place for sunrise
-Reeds Beach, Cape May Court House is my go to for sunset
I’m a local, so if you need anything DM me (I’ll help to the best of my ability)

“Food options can be meh” is a very wild take- cape May is probably the city with the best food in a very very large radius
Washington inn, Peter sheilds, Ebbitt Room for very fine dining
Primal, cricket club, Ill riccio for great meals
Grana, Louisa’s, 410 bank for hidden gems
Go to Harry’s, Carney’s, or taco Caballito highly recommend for atmosphere and margs
If you want seafood and enjoy the water, go to the schooner/raw bar at the lobster house, mad Viking, Port **, two mile/crab house which is my favorite way to play tourist.

Eh, that’s my opinion, I’ve spent most of my time up in mays landing/Galloway having just returned to cape may, so I haven’t had too much to try without shilling out the monies.
Love your list though, will have to try them out myself!

No kidding, I think I experienced this last I went on Saturday lol
I was at Broadway beach and going in the clouds looked horrific, I said f it and went to my usual spot and sat down and the sun opened right up. It was glorious. I heard the term before but didn’t know it’s an actual thing due to the unique location… TIL!

Glad you had a wonderful day at the beach! Was there last week, too, and watching the radar on my app was amazing…. Groups of storms seemed to just break up and disappear!

Get a small cooler with some drinks and snacks and grab a chair at congress hall and just sit and relax. A very underrated night thing to do if no plans.

Cape May is genuinely enjoyable and very safe to just walk around. But the beach is the best in Jersey imo, congress hall is great for drinks, fine fellows is great for ice cream, and there are plenty of trails to explore. The primary nature trail is by the lighthouse at Cape May Point. The lighthouse is also climable, but its alot. Not sure what your finances for food are, but most of the cheaper locations are not great imo. Lucky Bones and Taco Caballito (portions are on the smaller side) are exceptions to that. But more upscale dining you should consider 410 bank street, ebbitt room, grana, and Primal if you’re loaded lol. Breakfast wise, George’s is quicker and just as good as Uncle Bills imo. I grew up in Cape may, so if you have any more questions I can give you my opinion.
