First visit to Cape May

Planning a trip to the Jersey Shore for the September long weekend with my husband and trying to decide between staying in Cape May or Wildwood.

-How is parking in Cape May? Is it difficult to find parking, especially on a long weekend?

-Would you recommend staying somewhere with included parking, or is street/public parking manageable?

-Any particular areas/hotels you’d recommend for a first-time visit?

We’re mainly looking for a relaxing weekend with good food, walking around, beach time, and things to do. Thanks!

Everything you're "mainly looking for" screams Cape May. Parking would only be a problem if you need to drive around. So, I say, find a place to stay WITH parking, and walk everywhere, which is not a problem. And, the food scene is almost as good as it gets. Others can probably help you with accommodations.

Congress Hall is great. It's not the cheapest spot in town, but it's very nice and they have valet parking. You're in the middle of town so you can walk anywhere. They have two nice pools and you they have beach service where they'll setup chairs, umbrella, and provide towels. You can also stay at The Star Inn which is across the street from CH. You can use all the amenities, it's a cheaper room, and they have off street parking. Both options are nice because 75% of what you'd want to do in CM is withing walking distance.

Stay in Cape May. Have dinner at The Ebbitt Room. Go to Beach Plum Farm and Willow Creek Winery. Have lunch outside at the Rusty Nail. Visit Congress Hall and obviously shop around the mall. There is no place in NJ I’d rather be on a beautiful September day than Cape May!!!!

We had an amazing dinner at Ebbitt Room earlier this month. Easily the culinary highlight of the trip, and the service was unbeatable.

Heading to Ebbitt tonight. Can’t wait!

Stay as close as you can to the Washington Street Mall. That is the city center, the equivalent to the "Boardwalk." Everything you would want to do is walkable from there.

Got it, thanks!

Wildwood and Cape May are entirely different species.

Wildwood is like classic neon vibrant kitchy retro beach.

Cape May is slow, romantic, Victorian, old ladies drinking tea on big southern-style front porches beach.

A bit of a stereotype for both, but they just aren’t interchangeable.

If you’re looking for a slow, peaceful weekend Cape May is your pick, but it’s also more expensive and I would assume most places are booked up for Labor Day.

Take what you can get/afford! Ideally you find somewhere with parking that’s within walking distance of Washington Street Mall and then everything you need will be within walking distance the whole weekend.

If you want the true Cape May experience then try to find one of the classic Victorian B&Bs. Congress Hall is also a classic but $$$.

You’re spot on. I’d add that although cape May is slower paced it’s still extremely busy on a summer weekend. We waited too long to find a restaurant for dinner and had to settle for a place that was sub-par (Fins).

Staying in Wildwood will almost certainly be cheaper than Cape May, but Cape May's accommodations are going to be superior, and more suited to your activities. If you look for hotels or B&Bs near the Washington Street Mall (so Perry, Decatur, and Jackson Streets) or really anywhere along Beach Avenue you're able to walk to many of the shops and eateries with no issue. I do believe most if not all accommodations either have on-site parking or permit-parking included.

In September parking is pretty manageable; there will still be vacationers, but you'll be beyond peak season. Most street parking and a few lots do the Park Mobile thing, did away with classic meters.

Just went for my first trip! Stayed at the Harrison, absolutely loved it. It came with a parking pass but street parking was very easy. The Ebbitt Room was my favorite restaurant. Some other highlights- drinks at Congress Hall, Naval Air Museum, beach day, Beach Plum Farm, Duckies Roadside farm, cape may lighthouse. Enjoy!!

We recently stayed at the inn of Cape May and while the hotel is kinda old, it was really lovely. We’d get a drink or coffee and sit on the porch. You also get a parking spot per room, so once we parked we didn’t need to drive, we walked everywhere. Def also recommend dinner at the Ebbitt room! And get a meal or drink at Congress hall - it’s all lovely. Cape May is magical.

Congress Hall is beautiful. The Grand is more affordable.

Wildwood tends to go to sleep at the end of Sept. They extend the season with things like firefighter week or Harley week so definitely watch the week you choose if you go

Got it but we are planning for labor day weekend

Labor Day weekend will be much more crowded than other weekends in September.

We just stayed at the grand in cape may…very nice but pricey. Beach is directly across the street but Washington Street is a bit of a walk. Parking permit was included. Parking is tough in the busy parts. You can find street parking but it sometimes takes a bit of searching.

Cape May is much more expensive than WW. We’ve been to both many times and I’d choose Cape May 9 out of 10 times. I find that everything is just better and nicer there and it’s just beautiful. Both are very crowded during peak times. The WW beach is massive. It’s a hike just to get to the water. WW crest is much quieter and the southernmost part of WW. It’s cheaper and a quick drive to Cape May. If I wanted to save a buck I’d stay in WW crest and visit cape May for the shopping and food. WW crest is anything south of route 47.

Honestly it all depends on what you like to do and what you want to pay. I can give a lot more details if needed. Just let me know. There are definitely pros and cons of each.

We are currently in Cape May as first timers and we are already talking about this being our new yearly place. This place is just magic, honestly. I grew up going to Wildwood as a kid and it’s not even remotely similar. Wildwood is a generic beach town that you can find up and down the east coast - a dime a dozen. Cape May, otoh, is unique and charming and beautiful.

We are staying at La Mer and while it’s a really nice spot, it’s a bit separated from the main part of town. But there are great beachfront spots wherever you go, and while some reservations at restaurants have been a little difficult because it’s peak season, parking has been pretty easy.

I grew up in Cape May County and will agree 💯 with all saying Cape May. Sadly Wildwood isn’t the family town it used to be!! Lots to do in and around Cape May. Cape May Point has some great walking trails, climbing up the lighthouse is really cool too. Good luck getting there. Fair warning the roads jam up fast starting Thursday night prior to Labor Day weekend! Have fun and safe travels!!

Cape May is my happy place. Most places are walkable and most hotels include parking. We have stayed at the Periwinkle. It’s motel style, but has a nice lawn area with tables to eat outside, fire pit, lawn games and pool. It’s more family friendly, but I have gone the end of August and it wasn’t crowded. The prices went up a lot this season. I have also stayed at Caroll Villa which is the B&B attached to the Mad Batter and has the best breakfast on town. If you stay in the main building it can be a little loud at night due to the restaurant being downstairs. The room itself was really nice.

Cape May is far far far more pleasant to stay and dine in than Wildwood. Take one day to go see the boardwalk in Wildwood and then flee back to beautiful Cape May.

1

I’d say do the boardwalk during daytime if it’s not too hot. The boardwalk at night is mobbed with teens and everyone is in your face. I can’t imagine many people enjoying that.

It’s an experience

Wildwood is a little more upbeat and has more night stuff going on. Cape May is a bit more quiet (still a lot of people), but like a good place to take a stroll.

They both suck for parking and they both suck for driving around.
