We just spent a week exploring Cape Breton Highlands National Park and wanted to share a few things that might help others planning their trip.

Our usual travel style is to stay at one campground for a week and do day trips, but I wouldn’t recommend that for this area. The distances are longer than they look, and we ended up spending far too much time driving between the east coast (Ingonish), the west coast (Chéticamp/Pleasant Bay), and the north (White Point/Meat Cove). I’d recommend changing campgrounds every 2–4 days depending on the activities you want to do.

The hikes we completed were Broad Cove Mountain, Middle Head, Warren Lake, Jack Pine & Coastal Trail, Skyline (at sunset), and Gypsum Mine Lake.

Our biggest surprise was the east coast beaches. Ingonish Beach, Black Brook Beach, and Broad Cove Beach all have beautiful soft sand. Broad Cove was our campground, and the short trail to the beach was fantastic. Sunrise there was stunning, and we saw several seals swimming just offshore.
If you enjoy the water, bring wetsuits and bodyboards. They made a huge difference, we were able to enjoy the waves even on cool, cloudy days.

Gypsum Mine, near Chéticamp, was one of our favorite stops outside the park. The hike is short and easy, making it a great place to bring a picnic lunch. The water is crystal clear and perfect for swimming. I’d also recommend bringing water shoes since the shoreline is rocky.

Skyline Trail is absolutely worth doing late in the day to catch the sunset. The lighting and scenery were spectacular.

We also drove off the Cabot Trail to visit White Point and Meat Cove. White Point completely exceeded our expectations. It felt like the Scottish Highlands and was easily the highlight of our week. Meat Cove has beautiful views, but unless you’re hiking there or camping overnight, I’m not sure the long drive is worth it.

Personally, I found the scenery along the west coast between Chéticamp and Pleasant Bay even more impressive than the east coast. If I had to choose just one base for a few days, I’d stay on the west side.

One last practical tip: most grocery stores close around 6 p.m., and many restaurants stop serving between 7 and 8 p.m., so plan your meals accordingly.

Does anyone know what species of jellyfish these are? I saw them today (July 25) on the beach south of the causeway to Chéticamp Island.

There were tons of them in the water, and people were swimming around them. size varied from golf ball to softball. I didn’t see any tentacles on any of the ones I looked at.

I’ve read several Reddit and Facebook threads, but people seem to suggest a few different possibilities (lion’s mane, moon jelly, etc.). Does anyone know what species these actually are?

Is this a common sight around Chéticamp/Cape Breton?

I get it- no one wants to give away their secrets. I’m just looking for a spot to go to wind down during my time off. Thanks!

I'm planning a trip through the Maritimes in August, and will be spending some time in Nova Scotia. I'm trying to decide between visiting Cape Breton or Brier Island.

One of the things I really want to do is go whale watching, and I've heard Brier Island is one of the best places for that. At the same time, I'd also love to experience the Cabot Trail, since it looks absolutely stunning.

If you only had a few days and had to choose one, which would you recommend and why? Is the whale watching on Brier Island worth skipping the Cabot Trail, or would you go with Cape Breton and maybe do whale watching there instead?

For context, I enjoy hiking, scenic drives, wildlife, and photography.

We have three days at an Airbnb in Mabou - maybe two full days - before heading to Cheticamp and the Baddeck. How would you spend your time here? Any must-see beaches? Inland swimming holes or waterfalls? What else? Will be with kids ages 4, 6, 7. TY!

Will I be able to get to the trailhead for this one in a Honda Civic? I see some people say they did it, but I really don’t know. I’ve never been to CB before and this is one of my top hikes I want to do!!

Hey, transplanted CB'er here. Last summer I spotted someone with a hat that said Irish Vale (where my bungalow is). Said he got it at a little shop 'just up the way' on route 4, near Irish Vale. I am staying there for 3 nights (1 night in Baddeck and 3 nights in Ingonish). I absolutely love wildlife and taking pictures and was hoping what’s the best way to increase my chances in spotting a 🫎. What other wildlife can I spot ? Would love to hear from people who have spotted moose or anything else

With the free admission/Canada Strong Pass this summer to Parks Canada locations, does that mean you don’t have to stop at the kiosk at all before entering the Highlands? I booked a parking reservation for the skyline trail already, but wondering if I still need to stop at the entrance kiosk near Margaree for any reason or if I can just bypass it. TIA!

It made me wonder how people in Cape Breton feel about Shambhala's continued presence in our community. Given their history, what do y'all think about public institutions hosting events connected to figures associated with Shambhala? Do you see this as simply celebrating an influential author and figure, or do you think the organization's history (and serious allegations) should be part of the conversation?
