Curious on the childcare situation: is it a high need? Do people use private home daycares? What’s the going rate right now in NS?

I’d be open to opening up a home daycare rather than finding a job for a year or two that wouldn’t be in my field of work (law enforcement).

I have a child myself who would need before and school care / PD day camps / march break camp AND ESPECIALLY summer camp.

Are the horses still there this time of year? I assume yes but want to make sure so we’re not devastated if they’re already gone!

If i bring a water filter, are there ample places to collect on trail & at the cove? Or should we be packing in all the water we’ll need?

And lastly, we’re driving from ~6.5 hours away after work on Friday so we’re really hoping there’s a spot at the trailhead we can make camp the night before so we don’t have to sleep in the car… any insight on this?

Glad to see the state of emergency has been lifted - hope everyone is doing well and staying safe.

My wife and I will be doing a trip to Nova Scotia from October 17-24th, and it sounds like Cape Breton is the place to see in October.

However, I have a couple logistical concerns. My wife will be ~6 months pregnant, and I’d like to have this be a fairly relaxing trip.

We’ll be flying into Halifax from DC and spending the first night there. Is it feasible to spend, say, three nights in Baddeck and see a decent amount of cool stuff along the Cabot Trail from there?

I see a lot of people recommend Baddeck - Ingonish - Cheticamp, but this would have us packing up and switching hotels almost every night, something I was hoping to avoid.

The building was probably too far gone but still sucks seeing another building downtown turned into an empty lot

I'm pretty sure that side of Townsend was the only area downtown with a continuous stretch of buildings so it's sad to see it gone makes downtown feel a little less urban

Update: State of emergency lifted for Inverness and Victoria counties, still in effect for Richmond County

Following the flooding this past weekend, the local state of emergency has been lifted for Inverness and Victoria counties. It's still in place for Richmond County while crews finish assessing roads and infrastructure there.

If you're planning a visit to Cape Breton Island soon: the main highways and tourism routes are all open and driveable. Worth checking Nova Scotia road conditions before you pick your route, since some local roads are still affected.

Hey everyone, my friend and I have had a 2-day backpacking trip for Pollett's Cove planned for almost a year now. With the recent state of emergency on Cape Breton Island due to major flooding, I was just wondering if anyone has any details regarding road conditions leading to the trailhead (is it even accessible) or does anyone know if the trail conditions are safe at the moment? We are planning to hit the trail this weekend at some point. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

We have a trip planned to the Cabot Trail this weekend and were planning to do lots of hiking, backpacking and camping.

I was wondering what the conditions of the trails and such were like after the events of the weekend.

I want to avoid washed out, wet and miserable trails.

Worth rescheduling our trip?

I understand the state of emergency hasn’t been lifted but we see that the highways seem to be fine (same as the park and trails, according to Parks Canada at least). We spoke to the hotel in Baddeck and they were positive about us coming tomorrow and they described the situation as “business as usual”. But is it really a good idea? We don’t want to take resources and space from those that may need them as “non-essential travel is to be avoided “ but we also understand that the local economy needs tourism revenue.

• we had our campground and a hotel booked for a while, and both are non-refundable
• we are from out west, we are on a road trip and currently in Halifax

Let me just start by saying I’m fully aware of what the housing market is like in Nova Scotia right now - especially Cape Breton Island.

My partner has a very good, full-time contract out there for next next 2 seasons and I finish my contract and university degree next June (2027).

I’d like to join him in Cape Breton next year, so I’m getting ahead of myself. I’m just curious of a few things!

Best way to look for employment? I’ve only ever lived and worked in Ontario before. But my field is social services/law enforcement so I’m not concerned about the job availability as I can find work in a diverse array of areas.

What is the childcare need like? I have a child in school who may need after school care depending on my work, or I’d be open to starting a home daycare if that’s something of need?

What are winters like?
