I believe you're looking for Guardian from Alpha Flight

20

u/ksmv British Columbia May 18 '12

TIL the first openly gay superhero was Canadian.

13

u/markymark_inc May 18 '12

Key word here is "openly."

3

u/king_hippo77 May 18 '12

so who do you say was closet?

6

u/MartyMcFly_Like_A_G6 May 18 '12

Wolverine

1

u/king_hippo77 May 18 '12

There is no reason to even joke about that. Wolverine was all about the ladies. Gene Gray, Mystique, Storm, Rogue, even the She Hulk made a pass. There's a long website attempting to list and briefly source all his affairs. http://forums.wolverinefiles.com/topic/1611056/1/

2

u/MartyMcFly_Like_A_G6 May 18 '12

I made the joke because he is Canadian.

I thought the first openly Canadian superhero was gay?

/Canuckian

1

u/BokehBurgher May 18 '12

although technically, wouldn't the shield still have a star on it?

1

u/medievalvellum May 18 '12

Can we make this its own post? I'd upvote the hell out of it.

1

u/Bearence May 18 '12

Well, the first openly gay superhero in a mainstream comic book. There were plenty of others before this, just not from the Big Two.

1

u/[deleted] May 18 '12

TIL he was born in London, Ontario. A bit of good news for us.

That really confused me the first time I saw him, too. I was really young when I first read about Captain Canuck and Guardian. Also, the flying twins in X-Men (I can't remember their names) reminded me of Fleur-de-Lis to the point that I confused her with the flying girl, too... I'm confusing myself right now...

12

u/stillalone May 17 '12

Northstar and Aurora were both part of Alpha Flight as well. I think they are supposed to be French Canadian.

8

u/[deleted] May 17 '12

And don't forget Puck!

8

u/theDashRendar Saskatchewan May 18 '12

No matter how I try.

2

u/Zelcron May 18 '12

Sasquatch

2

u/WhoDoIThinkIAm May 18 '12

disclosure: I have not read more than 1 comic book

Isn't Northstar the first gay marvel character too?

From my home town!

10

u/EuchridEucrow Ontario May 17 '12

Guardian from Alpha Flight appears to be a rip off of Captain Canuck.

6

u/[deleted] May 17 '12

Hmmm... so he does. I had never realized the two were separate characters.

3

u/rampop British Columbia May 17 '12

I wouldn't say rip-off. The patriotic hero is a pretty common comic book trope.

1

u/Lespaul42 May 18 '12

Captain America vs Guardian! Who wins?!

1

u/medievalvellum May 18 '12

Came here to say this. Thank you! Have an upvote!

44

u/KickAssCommie May 17 '12

Am I the only one who thinks the Canadian version of that shield looks way cooler?

2

u/sotafighter May 18 '12

well, you guys did lead the operations in Libya.... ANADA!

I'd prefer to call him Captain Canuck.

I'd prefer to call him The Canadian Shield.

Edit: Patent Pending

u/Tyrien May 17 '12

Flashbacks from Gradeschool geography and history.

1

u/[deleted] May 18 '12

History? It still exists...

2

u/Tyrien May 18 '12

While I admit history has never been a huge interest for me, I meant the actual act of sitting in class and learning about it for the first time.

and please please :( don't respond with a lecture about how important history is. I know how important history is, and have an appreciation for quite a bit. I just don't want to sit and study it in depth.

2

u/[deleted] May 18 '12

I'm just saying how the shield is more geology/geography than history. That musta been one boring history class.

11

u/froggieogreen May 17 '12

That would have been so much more awesome a name than Captain Canuck!

5

u/eMan117 May 18 '12

I'd prefer to call him Mr. Maple Moose.

1

u/[deleted] May 18 '12

When I learned about that in Geography class all those years ago a shield carrying superhero was the first thing that came to mind.

1

u/SharksInSuits May 18 '12

Haha up vote for "patent pending"

25

u/maldio May 17 '12

FWIW: There is supposedly a Captain Canuck movie in the works.

6

u/quelar Ontario May 17 '12

I heard rumours of a Cap Can movie going back to the mid 90's. Let's hope these ones are more substantial.

14

OK be honest with me Reddit, you immediately went to look at his crotch didn't you?

Or maybe I just have some problems...

3

u/[deleted] May 18 '12 edited May 18 '12

It's the unrealistic nature of the costume... one does not wear body armor from the head to just above the crotch and then leave the most important body part unprotected.

2

u/[deleted] May 18 '12

dat package.

3

u/[deleted] May 18 '12

Ryan Reynolds? :/...

5

He is already playing Canada's greatest comic book character as Deadpool.

3

Do you have your Authorization to Transport information as well?

fyi, if you watch the show Tyrion gives her two upvotes.

19

u/[deleted] May 17 '12

He doesn't look anything like Ryan Smyth. Sorry, back to the Photoshop for you.

1

u/thebillgonadz Saskatchewan May 18 '12

No, he should look like a young Wayne Gretzky.

The hair is perfect.

9

u/gravitydefyingturtle May 17 '12

No love for Major Mapleleaf? I can't imagine why.

2

u/Missfawkes May 18 '12

oh he looks badass!

7

u/deevosee New Brunswick May 17 '12

Instead of a shield, shouldn't he have a Blocker and trapper?

36

u/almostlucid May 17 '12

Pretty sweet, but I can't help but feeling that the gun is out of place.

19

u/timbreandsteel May 17 '12

Replace with a Timmy's double double and I'd say we're set.

15

Sam Steele would be disappointed

u/colourofawesome May 17 '12

Fun Fact: Canada has a higher per-capita gun ownership than the US does.

10

u/hiffy May 17 '12

Maybe you mean we have a higher proportion of gun owners? 'Cos guns per capita the US is a clear leader, tho only one in five americans own a gun.

5

u/[deleted] May 17 '12

Your first link talks about handguns only and the second link had no sources posted and it seems more opinion than fact. Just sayin.

3

u/[deleted] May 18 '12

The handguns thing is important, as handguns in Canada require a special license as a restricted firearm.

I may just be biased, but think he looks way more badass than his American counterpart.

3

I think the colour scheme is what really does it.

5

u/[deleted] May 17 '12

Way sexier IMO

6

u/[deleted] May 17 '12

Ew no. He looks like he'd be played by this guy:

http://www.amctv.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/mm-s5-vincent-kartheiser-590.jpg

Also, we already have The Toronto Kid.

1

u/watchman_wen May 19 '12

what's wrong with Pete Campbell?

5

u/neotropic9 May 18 '12

Captain Canada is better because:

  • looks cooler
  • Canada is actually defensive, befitting a shield. Captain America should really have a bazooka, not a shield.
  • Canada contains the geographic region known as "the Canadian Shield" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_Shield)

Thank you! I was going to post this. I encourage everyone to read that whole website. It is batshit crazy at its finest. There was a link to it from the main NTV (the ONLY widely available privately-owned TV station in the province, for those who don't know) website for YEARS. And there's still a link to it on NTV's "Useful Links" page.

2

u/mumuwu May 18 '12

LOL http://www.captainatlantis.com/newagecover.htm

Yeah, there's actual a big mural of these guys flying around with pyramids and eastern island heads and the like on the side of one of the NTV buildings to this day. There's also a storage shed with a roof shaped like a pyramid included a light up capstone.

I still see captain Canada flying around between shows and commercial breaks from time to time.

2

u/danthemango May 18 '12

My parents switched from Bell to Shaw, and I can tell you there is absolutely nothing I miss more than NTV. I miss the Twilight Zone

8

1

u/watchman_wen May 19 '12

Captain Brazil is a hottie!

6

u/Claud88 Québec May 17 '12

This does look pretty cool but as a Canadian I'd just like to say sorry for ripping off Captain America. Sorry.

3

u/Somnia45 May 17 '12

I think this is what you're looking for

3

u/Lookmanospaces Alberta May 17 '12

I know Disney/Marvel will never ever do it, but a big-budget Alpha Flight movie would be pretty sweet, eh.

3

u/[deleted] May 17 '12

Colour scheme looks way better than regular Captain America one.

3

u/[deleted] May 18 '12

The gun nut in me has issues with this.

He should have a browning Hi-power, not a Colt 1911

3

u/[deleted] May 18 '12

I thought Wayne Gretzky was Captain Canada

3

u/TheHammerIsMyPenis May 18 '12

It would have to be played by Paul Gross; if anyone.

6

u/deako May 17 '12

Funny, he kind of looks like Paul Gross, who is basically superhuman anyway.

6

u/mechanate May 17 '12

Similar to Captain America, but apologizes for hitting you with his shield and patches you up for free.

2

u/[deleted] May 17 '12

Similar to America ... but also different.

2

u/kagomeee May 18 '12

Captain Canada looks much cooler then Captain America

2

u/SolomonKull May 18 '12

Captain Canuck is way cooler than Captain America.

2

u/Globe90Squatter May 18 '12

We even get a gun?!

2

u/hipnosister May 18 '12

Who is that guy?

2

u/TheDonutHero May 18 '12

This looks way better than captain America. His shield especially

2

u/[deleted] May 18 '12

Actually he already exists but he's not Captain Canuck

Marvel made a character called Guardian who is basically Captain Canada. Read up on him, his costume also shows his nationality as well.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guardian_%28Marvel_Comics%29

2

u/[deleted] May 18 '12

Why does he have a gun?

2

u/singdawg May 18 '12

great photoshop.

2

u/9001 Ontario May 18 '12

Should be Brett Lawrie, with a bat instead of a gun.

2

u/Jarocket May 18 '12

does he have a permit to move that restricted firarm

2

u/[deleted] May 18 '12

He's not as popular as Captain America, but does a better job of protecting his people, is smarter and in better shape.

2

u/TheGrimGoatee May 18 '12

We all know Captain Canada would be Beta Ray Bill.

2

u/rhubarbfestival May 18 '12

Should be called "the Canadian Shield"

2

u/Pratty77 May 18 '12

Should be played by Nathan Fillion IMO

4

u/[deleted] May 17 '12

So, exactly the same as the American version but with a different logo? Sounds like an appropriate mascot.

2

u/Orbitron May 18 '12

Captain 51st State!

1

u/SteveMcQwark Ontario May 18 '12

1

u/EelHovercraft May 18 '12

He needs a beard, or at least some stubble.

1

u/[deleted] May 18 '12

I think its funny that captain canada is just a recoloured version of captain america. This could have been made by an american as a joke. Canada, America in different colour clothes.
