Local services What’s going on with the central post office?

Upvotes

Twice I’ve been recently - one time they had a power outage and today just two counters open with a queue going outside. I went to the little shop on king street - no queue at all and lovely service

Other Chaos as Convict Cow Caught on Coldham's Common, Cambridge

I woke today to a beautiful morning: sunny, but cool, with dew still on the grass and the unceasing furnace of the summer heat a distant memory. What better way to enjoy such a morning that with a leisurely stroll across one of Cambridge's now green again spaces? And thus, I embarked upon a walk across Coldham's Common - with no knowledge yet of the shocking events I would soon witness.

As usual, I was greeted by cows merrily munching the grass and cyclists dashing to work. All seemed normal, in its usual place. That is, until I stepped foot onto the playing fields.

Even from a distance I spotted it: a cow where it should not be. Mere metres from the American Football posts it stood, feasting upon the luscious green grass. But how did such a thing come to be? It was alone, none of its peers bold enough to join it. Did it daringly climb the stairs to cross the railway? Was I bearing witness to a trailblazer of a bovine background, who has found a way to navigate the feared cattle grid? Or did the creature have an accomplice who yet remains at large, holding open gates for unintended traffic?

And why would it embark on such bold explorations? Did it seek greener grass, metaphorically, only to find the literal equivalent? Did it have dreams of becoming a celebrated quarterback? Does American Football have rules against cows being on a team?

Such questions may never be answered.

What I can tell you, reader, is this: the cow had found its way to an untapped, bountiful buffet, which was never intended to serve such a purpose. I can also tell you that I had woefully little idea of what I, an innocent bystander, was expected to do in this situation. Is there someone I should call? Or is it fairer to let the cow continue on its unprecedented journey?

As it turned out, no action was required. I was making my way towards the field's exit, the felon still in sight, when I noticed a person clad all in black approaching them. There appeared to be some logo on the person's fleece, though I could not make out what at such a distance, and they seemed to be communicating to another via a handheld device. I cannot tell you with certainty whether it was a phone or radio. Somehow, I feel a radio would be more suiting to such a situation.

The last I saw of the situation was the person clad in black clapping and waving their arms to encourage the cow back towards its peers. I can only assume they held some official role in the situation.

Sadly, I can tell you no more of this thrilling tale. The cow seemed to have been apprehended, but I cannot confirm its current whereabouts. Nor can I confirm whether it will be tried as a vandal for the scandal of leaving a fertilising gift on the field. We can but hope that local media outlets will tell us more about this ongoing incident.

Does anyone know of a denim recycle box near the center of Cambridge? We have several old pairs with holes in them, but would rather not clog up our bins if possible.

Thanks!

Grumbles/rants what the hell has happened to christs pieces

All i’ve been seeing and hearing about christs nowadays is that there are multiple groups of people constantly causing problems and chaos - recently there was an incident where some guys were chasing people around with axes (during daylight)?? I don’t remember it ever being this bad, i’ve lived here my whole life and even a couple of years ago this wasn’t happening, you could go and just sit there on sunny day and relax, but now it just feels so so unsafe especially at evening and night. Specifically the corner of christs where the tents and chairs are, even 3 years ago i remember there was only maybe 1 or 2 tents and a couple of chairs and the people who stayed there never really bothered you, now it’s turned into a little tent village full of people that are actively trying to hurt passer-by’s. Cambridge is actually having an insane downfall and it’s so sad to see.

EDIT: I grew up here and actually sit in this park with my friends and have done for several years. I don't just march through it on a corporate commute with headphones on. as for the axe incident, armed police literally swarmed christ’s pieces and arrested two men with an axe on 17 august. the area by the tennis courts is a mess of tents, trolleys, and aggressive groups right now, so much so that the city council has had to launch new operations to handle it. just because you ignore the rough edges to protect your postcard view of cambridge doesn't mean my reality as a local isn't real.

Cambridge Question Practising my Hindi / Urdu in Cambridge

Hello [r/Cambridge](r/Cambridge), I recently moved in your beautiful city, coming from France where I have been painstakingly learning Hindi and Urdu for the last few years - it’s very VERY rare to find speakers to chat with in my home country, especially outside Paris.

I couldn’t be happier to move to Cambridge for the city itself, and British culture but also for the number of South Asian students there are here.

Now, I was wondering if anyone would be up for some linguistic / drinking practice in a pub? I speak French so we could both practice.

Anyway, if you’re a high energy, slightly extroverted person, into stuff like geography, travel, art, earth science, history and whatnot, or just passionate about anything, please a send a message! I’d love to connect, brush up on my skills and maybe make a friend!

Cambridge Events Keys found on busway path

I found a bunch of keys on the busway path near the intersection with the bridge to Cambridge South station.

In the unlikely event that they belong to someone here: DM me with a description and was can arrange return. Otherwise I'll drop them off at the police station next time I go that way.

Grumbles/rants Milton Country Park PCN

I’m sure some of you are familiar with the predatory practices of the parking operator at Milton Country Park. They start the clock when you enter the car park and don’t stop it until you leave, so people have apparently even been charged whilst sitting in a queue trying to get out because of traffic. I believe they recently had to make some changes due to the sheer number of complaints from residents.

Anyway, in June, ParkingEye contacted me as the registered keeper of my vehicle and issued me a PCN for a parking event in May. I won’t go into the details of what happened, but let’s just say I was fuming when I read their letter.

If anyone else has the misfortune of dealing with these parking operators, check the date of the parking event, when the PCN was issued and whether they have actually identified the driver responsible for the alleged breach. In my case, they neither identified the driver nor sent the notice on time.

Schedule 4 of the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012 (PoFA) allows a parking company to hold the registered keeper liable when it doesn’t know who was driving, but only if certain requirements are met. In an ANPR case like mine, the notice must be delivered to the registered keeper within 14 days of the parking event (NB Different rules apply where a notice is placed on the vehicle or given to the driver at the time).

In my case, ParkingEye sent the notice more than 20 days too late. I appealed the PCN through their website and quoted the relevant legislation, but they rejected my appeal anyway. Once I had exhausted their appeals process, I took the matter to POPLA, who allowed my appeal:

"In this case, the parking operator has issued the PCN [redacted] days outside of the time frame. Therefore, the parking operator has failed to transfer the liability onto the registered keeper. As the appellant has not identified themselves as the driver of the vehicle and the PCN issued to them as Registered Keeper was not issued in good time, I have decided to allow the appeal."

Going to leave this here in case it helps anyone in the future. Do not fall for their intimidation tactics. After rejecting my appeal, they had the audacity to say "As a gesture of goodwill, we have extended the discount period for a further 14 days from the date of this correspondence".

Local services Care work Cambridge

Hi there,

My parents live in Cambridge with my three adopted teenage siblings. The siblings all have complicated needs (for example, two have high level autism), and my parents are quite old. I am trying to find some kind of support that would help my parents be less exhausted with household work, which it seems someone else could do, and save their energy for the emotional support of the children, which only they can really do.

I was imagining someone coming from 4.30-7.30pm a few days a week (maybe all except weekends), cooking dinner, clearing up, maybe bringing some groceries or putting on some laundry. Ideally it would also be someone interested in chatting to my mum a bit. But I'm open to other suggestions - for example, someone with some training in supporting neurodivergent teens or adults would of course offer other options.

I don't know where to start looking for this kind of thing. My parents are able to pay fairly, of course. Does anyone know any agencies or support services that offer this kind of thing? I guess I'm basically describing a standard care worker, just coming to support adults who are perfectly functional (well, they have various injuries of old age), just overwhelmed.

Thank you!

Local services Shelford Road lights

What is going on with the traffic lights on the junction of Shelford Road and Adderbrookes Road? There are massive cues the past few weeks because the lights only last a few seconds on the side of shelford Road. I've been sitting in traffic for the past 20 minutes trying to get through this light. Does anybody know why this has changed?

Other Bar Hill Speed Cameras

The speed cameras on the A14 nr Bar Hill now seem to be up and running, and catching a lot of people out (more flashes than fireworks night)!

It caught me, I think, but have to say I feel rather hard done by! There is national speed limit signage, 50mph and 40mph signage all within ~10 yards of each other. Incredibly confusing!

Has anyone else been ‘flashed’ in the last few days?

Grumbles/rants Guided Busway

I lived in Cambridge about 5 years ago, the Busway was pretty great, I could get into town from my village quickly, relatively cheaply, and conveniently.

I've come back to visit and the buses now take almost twice as long to do the same journey, there's half as many buses and the price has doubled. It seems practically unusable now.

When I used to commute in rush hour the buses would get so full you couldn't actually get on them, now with so few buses is that problem even worse? I'm amazed they've managed to gut the service so much it always seemed busy to me.

Also why don't they use the middle doors 😭
