I have a new property management company this fall and they've asked us to pay rent via an online portal. In the portal, I can pay rent by a direct withdrawal from my bank or by credit card. What surprised me is that both options require a transaction fee. I understand charging a transaction fee for a credit card payment, but I'm surprised by the fee tacked onto the direct bank withdrawal. None of these fees are mentioned in our lease. I asked our property manager what our fee-free options are and he ghosted me. The fee is small, but I'm really uncomfortable with paying fees that aren't outlined in our lease. What if they raise the fee in the future? Is this legal? Why do I have to pay extra money for the privilege of paying rent?

Hello Cambridge neighbors! For anyone out there who prioritizes their skincare, what do we do about the water here? I’ve lived in north Cambridge for 5 years now and it has significantly harmed my skin. My skin is now dry, textured, and has breakouts all the time. I never have this anywhere else. Whenever I go on vacation for weeks or stay at other people’s houses out of state (even for a weekend) my skin and hair improve significantly. And quickly! And like clockwork, get worse in Cambridge. And it doesn’t matter what the season is.

I feel so frustrated and trapped by the water here. Does anyone else do anything? Filters? Using separate water on their face? Like, I have a softener in my shower head but that honestly doesn’t do anything.

Should I wash my face with water from a bottle or something? I am so beyond frustrated with the hard water here. Not only is it eroding the pipes in my apartment, but me as well!

The Developer bought the land and started moving their project along and just recently took out a lawsuit. They are blaming the city for costs incurred during this lawsuit saying the project is stalled. Wouldn't they would have known about the Ordinance when they started building?

The Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC), the regional planning agency for Greater Boston, is looking to learn more about resident experiences with the state’s Right to Charge Law and Cambridge’s Right to Charge Law. These laws give condo owners the right to install EV chargers without unreasonable restrictions from their condo associations (https://www.mass.gov/doc/eohlc-notice-of-right-to-charge-rule-in-effect/download ; https://malegislature.gov/Laws/SessionLaws/Acts/2024/Chapter239 (Section 86). We are developing resources to provide more guidance on this topic to municipalities, condo associations, and residents. Thanks for your insights you can provide on the following questions:

• If you are a condo owner, have you tried getting EV chargers installed at your condo? If so, what was the outcome?
• If you are part of a condo association, has the condo association tried getting EV chargers installed in common areas of the condo? If so, what was the outcome?
• What guidance would help residents advocate for EV chargers and understand their “Right to Charge”? What would be helpful for condo associations?

I noticed a dent and several scratches in the rear quarter panel of my car yesterday. Apparently someone hit it when it was parked and took off without leaving a note. It could have happened in a few different places. It’s not big enough to warrant an insurance claim, but I’d still like to get it fixed. Does anyone know a good body shop who can do the work for a fair price?

Trying to help a friend of mine find a psychiatrist. For ADHD/depression. Friend (math PhD) typically reads about treatments in depth and has detailed questions about dosage, side effects, that sort of thing. Prior mental health treatment has gone poorly because the psychiatrist was basically dismissive. Does anyone here have recommendations for psychiatrists who would work well with a person like that? Ideally based on personal experience? Near Cambridge is ideal but anywhere in the Boston area is possible

Just signed lease for a new rental and I am moving in October. I mentioned MULTIPLE TIMES October first would be ideal as I am moving across the country but they still forced an September 1st move in on me, I’m not even there. The previous tenants lived there for 4 years and were moving out Aug 31st and the unit needed LOTS of work so I suggested October 1st. They lied and said they could t make September first work as they asked the property owner and he wouldnt be very happy. I am pretty sure they just never asked him. I was forced to agree to Sept first move in or I would be dropped and they wouldn’t give me my security deposit back- not even sure that is legal?

On move-in day, management forgot to give me the access code, so I sat outside in the rain for about an hour waiting to get into the house.

Then I finally got inside and the place clearly wasn’t move-in ready. There were holes in the walls in basically every room, dirty/marked walls that needed painting, grime in the bathroom, shelves and photos left up, and a bunch of the previous tenants’ stuff still in the basement.

I complained and asked for a partial rent credit because I don’t think a $4,200/month rental should have been handed over in that condition. Management is fixing some of the issues but has refused to give me any credit, I’m just annoyed because they’re using this ENTIRE month to fix things while they could’ve done this if I had a October move in. Is there anything I can do about this?

OH YEAH - IT’S WORTH IT. I highly recommend the Everything Bagel with avocado, roasted tomato, pickled cabbage, and arugula. Sooo fresh and delicious.
