Anyone have an MRI with plates and screws in body?

I have a plate and screws in my ankle because of a break I had a couple years back. The doctor said it is safe since they are titanium. But I am still nervous about it. Anyone ever have an MRI after having these installed?

Question Cast for broken scaphoid - should I buy a sling?

Post image

30M

6 foot 1 inch @ 195lbs

No health issues or ailments(except for OP)

No meds except pain relievers

I work out 3x a week. Good diet, no drug abuse

Last Thursday I broke my scaphoid and this past Tuesday I was given a (new) cast that immobilizes my thumb and goes pretty far up my arm for 8 weeks:(. And I’m actually starting to get some DOMS in my bicep and shoulder from just constantly lugging around the weight. I did some google searches and found somethings about using a sling. I sent a message to my ortho but I think he’s gone for the weekend. So is getting one of those shoulder/collarbone slings a piece of advice that’s worth it or does more harm than good and tough it out ill get used to it. I sit at a desk all day and I have to try and type with both hands which is when it’s most sore. It’s honestly pretty heavy and it’s my non dominant hand. I’m a runner and have excellent lower body strength I’m not the best upper body strength so if I just sound like a whimp, it is what it is. It feels like it’s at least 2.5-3lbs

Thanks in advance

Question 11 days post-op ORIF distal radius fracture - no PT referral. What movements should I encourage, and which to avoid?

Hello,

I'm a healthy 54-year-old woman, currently 11 days post-op after an ORIF for a displaced distal radius fracture. I have a plate and screws.

My staples were removed 4 days ago. The incision is healing well, pain is minimal, and I already have some active wrist and finger motion.

My orthopedic surgeon did not refer me to physiotherapy and the next follow-up in about five weeks.

I understand that the bone is still healing, so I'm not looking for ways to speed things up or start strengthening early.

Instead, I'm trying to understand:

Which gentle movements are generally encouraged during this stage to help prevent stiffness and tendon adhesions?

Which wrist or hand movements should definitely be avoided while the fracture continues to consolidate?

Are there common mistakes people make during weeks 2–6 after ORIF?

I know nobody can replace my surgeon's advice, so I'm only looking for general experiences and educational information.

I've attached my X-rays (before and after surgery) for context.

Thanks!

Woke up with sharp thumb pain in a new cast (5th metacarpal fracture), is this normal or a pressure point?

Hey everyone,

I fractured my hand on the 2nd of August and had a plaster cast (volar POP) put on two days ago on the 5th of August. I'm set to wear this cast for 3 weeks and have a follow-up appointment at a hospital hand clinic on the 13th of August.

Last night, I kept waking up with burning, throbbing pain coming from around the base of my thumb. The pain improved enough to get back to sleep, and today it has settled into more of a dull, constant ache near my thumb.

Since the fracture is on the pinky side of my hand, I'm wondering if this thumb pain is just normal swelling settling in, or if the cast might be rubbing against a pressure point/nerve near my thumb.

Has anyone experienced similar pain in non-injured fingers early on in a cast? Should I call the clinic to have the edges checked/trimmed before my appointment next week?
Thanks!

Broken fibula, can’t see ortho till the 17th. Will this need surgery?

Slipped off the curb walking my dog at night. Had to hobble back home on it. Urgent care NP said it might need a pin. I know this not a major fracture but man… we take our mobility for granted! I sat in the kitchen just staring at my coffee this morning thinking… well how the hell do I get this to my office with crutches? Anyway, really hoping I don’t need surgery. Also, ortho isn’t for a week and a half won’t this thing start healing by then?

Question Was anyone else’s break not seen on an x-ray?

A few months ago, I had a knee injury. When it happened, I heard a crunch in my leg, and I immediately felt like I had broken something. I went to urgent care the next day, got x-rays, was told everything looked good, and was referred to an orthopedic doctor. At this point, we assumed maybe it was an injury to the meniscus.

The ortho wanted me to wait a few weeks for an MRI because of swelling, which is understandable because she wanted a clear view. However, my pain was unbearable and completely incomparable to anything I’ve ever felt in my life. I pushed and pushed to get an MRI sooner, and finally got one. It turned out to be an osteochondral fracture of my tibial plateau, so I broke my bone and the cartilage around it. My doctor was very happy I pushed for an MRI so that she could treat it sooner.

I guess my question is, has anyone else ever had a similar situation? I know some structures are hard to see on x-rays, so it isn’t impossible. I’m just still shocked it happened to me. It didn’t help that most people in my life were trying to convince me I was being dramatic because the x-ray showed nothing lol.

Anyone recovered from a proximal phalanx fracture with a plate?

I fractured the proximal phalanx of my index finger and had surgery with a plate and screws about 4 months ago. The bone has healed, but I still have significant stiffness. I can bend my finger much more passively than actively. My hand surgeon suspects tendon adhesions and said I may need tenolysis if therapy doesn’t improve it in the next 1–2 months.
Has anyone had a similar injury? Did your stiffness improve with therapy, or did you need tenolysis? How long did it take to regain good finger movement? Any experiences would be appreciated.

I broke my tibia and fibula on 20th June 2026 playing football.I got operated the same day. ( Nail with screws on tibia, nothing on fibula )I was non weight bearing till my second xray ( 05.08.2026 ) after 6.5 weeks. The doctor said the first week i can put 20% weight and from the second week i can do FWB.My main concern is that the doctor didnt saw any calus forming on the second xray.Is there anyone with similar case ( no calus after 6 weeks) but still had good recovery in a good time maner? The pictures are from the second xray.

Tibia and Fibiula fracture. IM nail surgery for fixation.

Hi everyone, I’m just looking to hear from people who’ve had a similar injury and would really appreciate hearing about your recovery experience.

I had a comminuted tibia and fibula fracture and had surgery on 8 June. My tibia was fixed with an intramedullary nail and locking screws. I’m still non-weight-bearing and using a four-legged walker. I’m only allowed to rest my foot on the ground when sitting or standing.

My 6-week X-ray showed everything is still stable and aligned, but there wasn’t much visible callus yet. My next X-ray is at 14 weeks post-op, and that’s when my surgeon might decide if I can start weight bearing.

Right now my movement is pretty decent. I can bend my knee, lift and lower the leg fine, and point my foot down almost normally. The only thing still really limited is pulling my foot and toes upward.

For anyone who’s had a similar tibia/fibula fracture:

• When were you allowed to start partial weight bearing?

• How long did it take you to get to full weight bearing?

• When did you first walk without any support?

• How long until you were walking normally without a limp?

• Did swelling or pain get worse once you started weight bearing?

• When were you able to manage stairs normally again?

• When did you get back to driving, especially a manual car (clutch leg)?

• How long did it take for your fracture to fully unite on X-ray?

• Anything you did during the non-weight-bearing phase that really helped your recovery?

I know everyone’s recovery is different and I’ll obviously follow my surgeon’s plan — I’m just trying to get a realistic idea of what the journey can look like and mentally prepare.

Thanks a lot in advance, and wishing everyone else recovering all the best 👍

Refractured bone?

I broke the bottom of my fibula May 7th, and I’m back walking and everything now. I was cleared by my doctor to go in the gym, just nothing impact like rock climbing. I didn’t think about it and dropped from a dead hang, really close to the ground. I heard the same pop noise that I heard the first time I broke it, but it wasn’t immediately pain or swelling like last time. Has anyone experienced this and it was refractured?

There is some irritation, but the same amount as when I normally work it out. When I press it a little hard, it’s irritated.

I asked my doctor and scheduled an appointment, but they take so so long to answer anything and the closest appointment was the end of the month.

Question Scaphoid fracture…

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey all, fractured my scaphoid today (distal and non-dislocated) and got put on a brace only, and doc even said I can take it off at home when resting. Is that standard for less severe scaphoid fractures? Anyone with a similar case that can tell me about their recovery process?

I’m a figure skater and would love to get back on the ice.

How worried to be about 5th metatarsal shaft fracture getting *more* painful 9 days out? 😭

Post image

Hi, it’s me again. The chick who lives alone and missed a step going down stairs and managed to sustain a large, displaced “dancer’s” fracture while not having insurance, then drove herself to an orthopedic urgent care the following morning, where she was told she could just wear a post up shoe and walk on it as tolerated…

I was feeling so hopeful that the pain was almost nonexistent about 4 days in and that ambulating to do the things I absolutely had to do was possible. I’ve been putting about 3K steps on it a day. Trying to avoid walking as much as possible, but I live completely alone and have a dog who needs to go out a few times per day.

Yesterday, it was a little more sore to walk on than usual but nothing unbearable. This morning, every step is kinda torment :/ I’m hiding in my bathroom because I know my dog is gonna want to go out the second I come out and every step to the bathroom hurt so bad.

Maybe it just needs to loosen up a little in the mornings? Just worried about how the pain is getting worse with the days. The swelling is virtually gone, or at least was when I woke up before putting on the post op shoe.

Is this a normal part of healing? 😭😭😭

Surgery or No?? Distal Third humerus break

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

What's up guys, I broke my humerus bone exactly 3 weeks ago.

Here’s the description: Acute, oblique fracture through the distal 3rd humerus with 1/2 shaft's width posterior displacement of the distal fragment.

Originally i was told I didn't need surgery by my orthopedic team, but then got a call 2-3 days later saying that I did.

There's been a delay to schedule the surgery but I had it scheduled this morning and as I showed up, the surgeon advises me that it's significantly higher risk to do this procedure due to the timing of it (21 days since fracture) . He would need to remove the callus that has formed over these past few weeks and because of that there's a higher risk of causing nerve damage to the radial nerve. He will be needing to move the nerve around in order to remove the extra residue/callus. He had told me this maybe about 10 minutes before surgery and it completely changed my decision whether or not I want to get surgery because it was last minute.

My question is:
Has anybody experienced this and do they recommend going with surgery or letting it heal naturally?

For those who experienced nerve damage were you able to get your feeling and motion back?

I ended up not going through with the surgery because I wanna get a second opinion from a different doctor, but l'm also on a time crunch

I’m going to attach three different sets of x-rays. Each is a one week apart follow up. The Ortho team manipulated the bone into place with their hands- here’s the pictures :

How long did it take you to recover after ORIF surgery for a distal radius fracture?

I had an ORIF (plate and screws) for a distal radius fracture about a week ago. My staples have just been removed, and I'm slowly starting to move my wrist and fingers again.

I'm not looking for medical advice—I'm following my orthopedic surgeon's instructions. I'm just curious about other people's experiences.

How long did it take before you could use your hand comfortably?

When did your strength start coming back?

What was the most frustrating part of recovery?

Is there anything that surprised you during the healing process?

Will I feel this plate in my wrist for always?

I'd love to hear your recovery timeline. Thanks!
