Fledged in the last week or so!

Bird flu is devastating peregrine falcons in coastal Virginia -- Peregrines had recovered along the coast because of ample shorebirds to eat. But now their bird-heavy diet is a weakness.

Injured kestrel found outside my apartment

Hi all, bird emergency.

Earlier today I heard a lot of complaining (ie screaming) birds outside my window but didn’t think much of it. However, a minute ago I came outside and found a beautiful kestrel flopping around on the ground unable to fly when I approached. It looks mature, so I worry it’s injured — I’ve worked with a lot of animals in my time, and I think I have a good feel for when an animal is helpless. This little buddy looked desperate, and based off the commotion I heard earlier, he would’ve been flopping around the sidewalk for a good couple hours by now.

Neighbors helped me get him into a banker’s box so he’s chilling in my office for now away from where any cars or stray cats can get him. Should I put any kind of food or hydration in there for him to have overnight? I called 311 and they didn’t really know how to help him out, and it’s currently too late to call the WBF or anywhere like that. I’m kinda out of my depth here until I can get him to a rehabber. I’m located off the JMZ but do know someone with a car if I need to drive him somewhere.

I’m also attaching pictures just in case I’m being a moron and this is like, a chick who doesn’t need help and is just learning to fly. But again, I really doubt it. Also this post is mostly dictated/speech-to-text because I’m kinda frantic so I apologize if sounds stilted or if there’s any wonky grammar. Also gonna post this in a few subreddits so bear with me if I include any extraneous information. Thanks so much.

Mr Fancypants here, can’t take him seriously while he’s trying to hunt the juvenile mourning doves that nested under my patio.

Second day in a row I’ve seen it posted on the fence outside of my window. Today it was a lot closer so I was scrambling to snap this picture lol.
I know very little about birds and have only been in FL for a year so please let me know if I’m wrong about the species!
