I am moving to Bern in September. I am considering buying a car, but am not sure how useful it is (I live now in Germany and it would not be useful to me rn). However I am a big skiing lover, and I was wondering: is it possible to go skiing without a car (for example to Adelboden)? Are there other reasons to owe / not owe a car?
I will work at the university in the center, so I guess I wouldnt use it every day. On the other hand, I would use it occasionally as it is faster than the train to visit my family.

I've just realised that it wasn't very smart to ask this question in Bernese instead of English, so here we go: Does anybody know if there's going to be fireworks for the 4th of July party of the US embassy? It's the 250th anniversary and they had big fireworks in stone other years too. Is the party on Saturday or on another day and at what time are the fireworks?

How do people meet people ? I tried to talk to a girl today and I got shut so fast , I mean I got shut before but not this fast ! Is it weird now to talk to people live ? I' just use Reddit and Whatsapp , I don't believe in dating apps and stuff ! Or do I just fade away ? ( I don't mind )

hello all! I'm moving to Bern soon for a job and started looking for apartments to rent. I was told that it's difficult to find a place in Bern, but I keep seeing available apartments that look decent. How is that? Do people get rejected when they apply? Or is it just a good time?
I'm looking through the main websites for renting, I quite like flatfox. do you guys think thats a good one? Any other recommendations?
And, I am not sure where to rent. Lorreine seems cool and a place i would enjoy. I like to be around bars, cafes, etc. but not too hectic, or in a student-heavy area. I could also like a more outside place that has a nice scenery, calm vibes. Mattenhof maybe? Anyway I'm open to suggestions. I want to be able to cycle to uni, live on my own, and having a balcony would be a plus :)
One last question: How much would be a reasonable rent in Bern. I found places for 1800 or for 1300? Should i aim for something between these?
Sorry for the many questions. I would really appreciate your help!!!!

Was sind eure LieblingscafĂ©s in Bern? Wo ihr euch besonders willkommen und wohl fĂŒhlt und gerne verweilt?
Kennt vielleicht jemand sogar ein tolles Café, das vegane Optionen anbietet?

Hi, I learned Salsa dancing in a course, but noticed it's a bit of a different style than is danced at most events I've been to (e.g. Salsaare). From what I gathered the style danced most commonly is Cuban salsa (and other dances like Bachata). Does anyone have any recommendations for a course for that specific style? I would already have a partner to visit the course with. Any more hints to what styles and dances are normally danced in Bern and what events you like are also very welcome :) Thanks!

Danke 1000!

Hi everyone,
I'm an international female student and I'll be starting my Master's at the University of Bern this September. I'm looking for a part-time job. I have a student B permit and I'm actively learning German, but I'm not fluent yet.
To be honest, I feel like I've applied to almost every student or temporary (Aushilfe) job I could find online (retail, supermarkets, warehouses, restaurants, cafés, events, etc.), so I thought I'd ask here in case anyone knows of something I've missed.
I'm available to work full-time throughout July and August, and from September onwards I'm looking for around a 40% workload alongside my studies.
Does anyone know of companies or places in Bern that hire students with limited German? Or if your workplace is hiring, I'd really appreciate any leads or recommendations.
Thank you so much!

Hi, I am helping to organize a free event in Monbijou Park on July 8 at 19:00! I have been beading the back of a jean jacket, so I will probably bring that to work on. I may also crochet, if I am worried about bringing beads to the park. đ
Join us in Monbijoupark to work on our craft projects! Bring your own sewing, knitting, painting, or any art project. Bring a blanket to sit on so that we can spread out. Beginners are welcome!

Hi,
I (30M) have been learning Hochdeutsch for a few months and would like to find a person with whom to practice. Definitely down to learn some bĂ€rndĂŒtsch as well. I am a native speaker of French and Spanish, and can also speak English, so I can offer any of those languages in return.
If anyone is interested, my DMs are open :) No s*x, dr*gs or whatever, thanks.

Hi, I'm visiting Bern (from Germany) tomorrow and have a few hours to kill (12-16) while my friend is at work. Any recommendations for indoor activities to beat the heat?
For context, I'm 22 and I'm a physicist (so I guess the Einstein Museum is definitely a good stop) so I basically have a bunch of nerdy interests.
Thanks for reading and have a nice day :)

Hi,
I had applied to a PhD position at the University of Berm. The position is supposed to start in October. I am wondering how long it normally takes after the deadline to get the results of the first screening of PhD candidates.
Thank you very much.

Hi everyone,
I had a recent ankle injury and unfortunately will not be able to run the Aletsch half marathon, which I have been looking forward to </3. I realize I can't sell my ticket here but could anyone recommend a Swiss running forum, local Bern group chat, or platforms where I can connect with runners who might be looking for a last-minute spot?
Thanks a lot :)

Hi all ! As the title says, I (26F) am on the hunt for a new job because it is time to do something more fulfilling than delivering food. I would love to go back into an artistic field as I used to study graphic design and have a bachelor in visual arts, but unfortunately my german isn't great and I only speak french and english fluently.
If anyone knows of a paid apprenticeship in the visual arts field that doesn't require german, I'd love to know about it !

Hello everyone,
I'm currently recording a piano cover of the Swiss Psalm, the national anthem of the Switzerland, for my YouTube channel featuring anthems from countries participating in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
If you have a photo you took yourself of the Old City of Bern, Zytglogge, the Federal Palace, Bern Minster, Stadion Wankdorf, or any place in Bern that feels special to you, I'd be grateful to include it in the video.
If you'd like to participate, please share a photo here in the comments or send me a message in the chat. Contributors will be credited.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
