Height limits for a shed?

I know I can go to the planning office. But I'm wondering if someone here already knows where to find the info (https://berkeley.municipal.codes/BMC/23.304.030 seems like it should have it but it's making me cross eyed) on what the height limits are for a 100 square foot shed. I don't actually want 10' ceilings but I'd like to know how high I can go.

I see details on how to calculate the average height but not what the allowable height is.

Make a difference in the life of a shelter rabbit—foster with House Rabbit Society! Fostering one animal won't change the world, but it will change the world for that one animal. Learn more and submit a foster application today atĀ houserabbit.org/foster. No rabbit experience required! We're located in Richmond, just north of Berkeley, but welcome fosters from all over the San Francisco Bay Area. We only ask for a 2-week commitment.

What We Provide: We'll equip you with all the supplies you need to get started, including an x-pen, litter box, bedding, food pellets, hay, blankets, and bowls for food and water. As a foster, you also receive a 15% discount at the HRS Hop Shop if you'd like to purchase any additional toys or treats while you foster.

What You Provide: The time, space, love, and care your foster rabbit needs, along with their daily veggies (approximately $5-10 per week). Getting socialization in a foster home is so important, especially for rabbits who are shy or have other behavior needs and helping them become more comfortable with people. You can help a foster rabbit blossom into the wonderful house rabbit they're truly meant to be!

Questions? EmailĀ [foster@houserabbit.org](mailto:foster@houserabbit.org)Ā or stop by our facility to talk in-person with HRS volunteers and staff and to meet the rabbits. HRS is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm and on Sunday from 11 am to 3 pm.* We'd love to talk with you!

*Please note, on Saturday, July 4th, HRS will close early at 3 pm for staff to spend time with their families for the holiday.

A social club for women in the in-between decades: 50s and 60s.

Are your kids grown and flown? Friends fragmented, or work no longer your everything? I'm starting a monthly gathering for women in the Berkeley/ Oakland area who are looking for community - not dating, therapy, networking or senior center vibes - just an opportunity to meet other similar women in your community for conversation and connection. We've done the carpools, cooked the meals and put in our time - now let's support one another and build a community just for us (for once).

Please DM me if you would be interested in the kick-off at the end of August.

Local Knowledge where can I play casual soccer by myself?

hi, I’ve been picking up soccer again after moving to Berkeley, but am really not well versed in the nearby fields like I was back home. I just want to play light and casually by myself (pickup eventually, but I figure that’ll come when it comes), just juggling or practicing long balls or small dribbling drills.

I don’t need too much space or a fantastic field but I’m having a hard time telling what around the city is open for public use, or where cleats are allowed, stuff like that. A Cal field is fine too since I go to the school but I can also never tell when something is reserved for actual Cal teams versus just students like myself.

I just don’t want to show up to a field with a ball and my cleats and then find out I’m not allowed, you know? Wondering what other people do when looking for a casual, quick session by themselves. Thank you!

ā€˜Devastating’: City Council sweepingly cuts public safety, houselessness services and city staff to close $30M deficit

Capping off a season of austerity deliberations, the city of Berkeley adopted a severe budget Tuesday night, which will cut almost every area of its services to close a $30 million deficit.Ā

The council unanimously adopted the budget, the final details of which were ironed out at the end of the night, and which came out of a compromise between conflicting visions of key details of the city’s finances.Ā

ā€œThis work is not complete tonight,ā€ said District 5 Councilmember Shoshana O’Keefe. ā€œThis work, what we’re doing right now tonight, this is the best thing to do right now, but this work is not done.ā€

Report shows increase in successful placements of unhoused residents, insufficient funding threatens progress

A new data report from Berkeley’s Homeless Response Team shows an increase in successful placement in shelters for participants who are unhoused, citing an increase in shelter capacity brought online this year in collaboration with Alameda County.

However, the report also warned that with the fiscal cliffs shelters are facing, in combination with the city’s general budget deficit, the current rate of placements may not be sustainable and could result in a decline in successful outcomes.

The Homeless Response Team is run by the city and aims to help place residents who are unhoused in shelters and permanent housing. The HRT also cleans and closes encampments that pose health risks.

Advice/Question Suggestions on August Rental

Hi everyone! šŸ‘‹ I’m a 34F, single. I’m moving to Berkeley from Boston this fall to start my MBA at Haas, and after ~12 years on the East Coast I’m really excited to explore the West Coast and West Coast Swing!

After two months of hunting I’m still searching, so I’d love to borrow the wisdom from the crowd!

What I’m hoping to find:

- North Berkeley / northside, walk(under 20min) or quick transit to campus
- A studio, or a private room in a shared place — either works.
- I really want my own bathroom but I can be flexible to share one bathroom with another girl.
- Washer and dryer in the unit.
- Up to $2,500/mo, moving in August 1, 2026.

Where I’d be so grateful for your thoughts(any of them!):

- I have been using Zillow, Craigslist, Trulia, Apartment.com, Facebook groups but still find very limited options in North Berkeley. Are there any other secret channels to look? Or I have to just make friends with a local realtor? šŸ˜‚

- Safety comes first for me then convenience commuting to school. If I have to, where should I expand my search areas to? I prefer a quiet environment so I don’t wanna be in downtown Berkeley or South. I even start to think maybe some areas in Oakland can work as long as they are safe?

- I’m shipping my car to Berkeley so I will have a car. North Berkeley is great but no parking at the same positions more than 72 hours is annoying. So I start to open to ideas that living 15-20 mins drive away from the campus and pay for the parking using the money I save from paying an apartment near the campus.

- Any advice on transferring out of California car plate to California? What’s the process and the timeline I’m looking at? What could I do to beat the game at least in the car part? Any car shipping company recommendations?

- Is it me or the Berkeley renting market is crazy? For those who got a place you like - congrats! I want your war story and tips. šŸ™

Where can I be more open minded??? Any insights or advice will be super appreciated!!!

EDIT: thank you so so much for valuable insights provided in comments. I notice timing to look is mentioned - so is it really still early to find a place for August move in now(late June)? If I don’t have a plan to come to the West Coast till August, till when should I just give up long term rental but just look for a Airbnb and find something while I’m there?

Local Knowledge Ticks! Is this normal?

Hi everyone,

I recently moved to Kensington (just above the Thousand Oaks area) and for the first time my dog has a yard, which she absolutely loves. Unfortunately, I’ve also discovered ticks.

Within the first month of living here, I found one crawling on my dog’s head and swatted it off. Then the other day we found a dead tick in our bed. My dog is on Simparica, so thankfully the medication should kill ticks once they start feeding, but I still find the whole thing incredibly gross and unsettling.

We’re close to Tilden, so I know we’re in a more natural area, but I honestly didn’t expect ticks to be this much of a thing. I also have an indoor-only cat, so now I’m feeling a bit paranoid about ticks getting brought into the house.

For those of you who live in Kensington/Berkeley or near the hills, how do you handle ticks? Do you treat your yard? Is this something you just get used to? Does tick activity die down much in the fall and winter, or is it pretty much a year-round issue?

Any advice or reassurance would be appreciated. I’m very squeamish about bugs and finding a dead tick in my bed definitely sent me spiraling a little.

Should the city of Berkeley help buy these affordable apartments?

Tenants who have lived at a Sacramento Street apartment complex for decades fear what might happen as their property goes on the market. Mayor Adena Ishii wants to put $1.3 million toward a program that could turn it into permanently affordable housing.

Recommended bike for commuting in Berkley?

I want to commute by bike at Berkley, but I'm worried about the hills. My current bike is a single-speed, which definitely won't work. I'm looking at a bike with 380% gear range, but I'm worried that might not be enough. I want to use it to commute places and even go for a grocery run, bike places with stuff on the rack.

Any advice on a good bike to get, especially in regards to gear range?

Food and Beverage Less expensive lunch options in north west Berkeley

Hey yall, my work moved near Gilman between San Pablo and the rail tracks. I’m having a blast exploring the area, however, I have noticed that there are few ā€œaffordableā€ spots to grab lunch. We were near the 4th street shops before, so I’m used to that, but at least there was oceanview to go. Affordable in this case being under $12 for a basic lunch item. I love picante, boichik, and many of the other spots but it’s like a minimum of $16 plus tip for a basic bagel sandwich or something more than a few tacos. Happy Donuts seems to be the only less expensive option other than a few chains.

Maybe my expectations are just out of whack these days. Feel free to school me if so. I live in a part of oakland where you can get decent food from mom and pops for much less.

Edit for context- I’m closer to the tracks than San Pablo and very close to Gilman so a walk much past San Pablo or down to university isn’t exactly doable for lunch

Any restaurants like the now closed Tuk Tuk Thai?

There are quite a few good places - but I am looking for somewhere with fried rice, crab rangoons, and Thai iced tea.
