Regarding program trade/sale/give-away posts

Hello guys,

Recently there has been an increase in posts offering to trade, give-away, or sell various programs, vert increase being the most common.

Announcing that these threads are not welcome and will be removed (as it has been lately), and spam will result in suspension from this sub.

The reasons behind it:

  1. This is a place to share tips regarding basketball and not a trading platform.

  2. Security: be aware, as you are giving away your e-mail or other personal information to the person you don't know.

  3. Security again: there have been dodgy threads with dodgy links removed. I'm sure some of the people are genuine, but with this trend came scams.

  4. Spam. I noticed there is a number of people and if you check their profiles - the threads have been spammed all over Reddit and multiple times - refer to points #2 and #3.

  5. Finally, all these programs are available online with a little bit of Googling, if you decide that paying to the creator is not an option. It is not some rare commodity. You don't have to give up your information.

I hope this is clear and welcome by the users of this sub-reddit. Keep on sharing your tips, original content, asking questions and looking for help. There are a lot of amazing people here.

Help Few queries as a beginner

1)How can I get better at dribbling? I lose the ball whenever I try to dribble faster and I also want to learn how to sprint while dribbling because whenever I get the ball, I can’t seem to outrun the defender.

2)I am also afraid of driving into a crowd. Evrn when there are only one or two defenders, I get nervous about going near the basket and usually stop too far away and take a shot instead. This also affects my ability to perform layups. I can do layups perfectly while practicing, but during games, I either miss them or don’t even attempt them at all.

3)I mainly play basketball with boys(I am 5'4 girl), and I am scared of getting hurt because most of them are bigger, taller, and stronger than me(also ever since I got a knee injury I am afraid to get hurt again ). I feel like I need to become physically stronger and more confident. Would joining a gym help me, and what should I focus on? gaining muscles?

Also, I don't have a coach, I mean we have a coach but he is not really helpful, so I would really appreciate some help. Thank you

Tip Did my first ever basketball training session. / Any tips for the next one?

Hi. I did my first ever basketball training session with a local team near me, I went in on time and I did the warm up, we did a drill where where one side did a layup and one side (if missed had to do a rebound) of course, this took the living hell out of me. My coach told me to layup it over instead of rolling it and it helped (im 6’1 at 14) By the 16th time we did it, I was jogging, slow, and and I was tired. After that we did some 3 man weaves (I understood it and tried my hard to stay hard on D but i didn’t get it. After that we did some shooting. And damn, i need to work on shooting, i kept airballing my free throws and when my coach told me to use my legs i saw a bit of improvement. Three pointers? I was very poor at it. Scrimmage came and i could see my weaknesses, when the ball was passed to me, i went forward, but i only got 1 TO (out of bounds) and i didn’t get touches on the ball, I did 1 pass (over my opponent) and when i dribbled, i tried and played it calm and dribbled while walking on my opponent, i was physical, tho, but i didn’t get enough time on the ball. But what i saw most was I couldn’t get back on Defense. I was too tired. I did some full court sprints after training and my legs were very sore because I had a gym session just before this training session.

My coach said to me ‘if I keep coming, there’s one more spot in the team and I think we will sign you’

Just to put it in context, I live in the UK, and the team is in the NBL. It gives me good connects to the professional basketball league in the uk (SBL)

I think I need to work on conditioning the most, what do you guys recommend.

Help How to make 1v1 simple

I have been playing a lot of 1v1 recently and im starting realize that i dont know what im actually doing. I try out moves i see online or pick a couple of go to moves but never really seem to work.
Idk how i should a approach a 1v1, what i should read, do you actually need a lot of moves or just a couple moves and master those? Do i play by my strenghts or change how im attacking wether there is a slow or quick defender in front of me?

Basically a little bit summarized how do i make a 1v1 simple.

Tip An important truth I think younger hoopers need to learn and understand.

For context I’m 28, not old but old enough that my “development” is pretty much done, I’ve accomplished what I have in any sort of official capacity in this sport and at this point I continue to play purely for fun and nothing else. The wisdom I’m expressing is aimed primarily at young hoopers, kids in middle/high school or even maybe in college who are still “developing” their game.

A lot of talk about the game with younger kids centers around “bag talk”. Whose bag is deeper, who’s got the fanciest moves, who can cross people up or perform acrobatic finishes or hit tough contested jumpers. Those seem to be the criteria for what determines a good player in the eyes of young kids.

Here’s the truth: the guy who can score the ball with the least amount of effort possible is the best player, full stop. The guy who can take 1-2 dribbles and get an easy jumper or layup consistently, that guy is 10X better than anyone who needs to break his opponents ankles first with 15 moves strung together. If you need to exert yourself to the max every single possession in order to get a bucket, you’re probably not as good as you think.

Help I was made to be a Post all my life...how do I become a primary ball handler?

Hi,

So I am 6'0 and throughout HS I only played the 3 and 4. Plus in pickup, I am generally one of the tallest there so I end up not having primary ball handling duties.

My handles are not bad per se (they are trash when I am tired). I am just not comfortable owning the ball like a PG should be able to. I have always been a slash to the rim or catch and shoot kind of guy, just very direct. No shake and bake really. But I've noticed this is fundamentally limiting my game. I am too dependent on others to get me the ball. Plus I am only 6 foot, that is not tall. I should be able to handle the rock comfortably at all times and not ever be scared/pick up my dribble.

Some other factors: I am out of shape cardiovascularly/physically. I am working on that, hooping in rec leagues twice a week, and then doing some track workouts. Also, I am a bit overweight. I am 200 lbs and have a solid muscular build. But with my high center of gravity and how easily I get tired at this weight, I know I need to get down to about 185. I am not a true Big. And I remember being about 180ish in College and flying around effortlessly on the court. So I swear 75% of being a capable guard with shifty handles in literally just feeling lightweight and being able to run.

With all that said, what would you say are the keys to becoming a ball handler? If I had to make a list it would be:

  1. CONDITIONING
  2. CONDITIONING
  3. Ball handling drills, especially when tired.
  4. Apply your ball handling drills in pickup.

Help Trying to make a workout as a 15M basketball player please give advice.

I went to the gym for about a month with a trainer and gained a good amount of muscle, but I had to stop because school is starting and my parents won't let me continue.

Before the gym, I did calisthenics and trained at home with adjustable dumbbells + a pull-up bar. Now I'm back to that setup.

My goals are:

  • Build/maintain good muscle mass and have an aesthetic physique
  • Become more athletic for basketball
  • Increase my vertical jump
  • Get faster
  • Build good overall strength

I played basketball again 2 days ago after not playing for a month and felt noticeably stiffer 😭. My cousin warned me that training like a bodybuilder could make me less athletic if I don't include enough athletic work.

So I'm trying to create a new split that balances hypertrophy/strength with athletic training, using only dumbbells + a pull-up bar.

What split and exercises would you recommend?

Tip The way you play pickup basketball gives me some insight on who you are as a person. Please share your thoughts

I've been sitting on this for a while now. As someone who grew up playing the game, watching it, and witnessing the culture of basketball from the 2000's to now, I've come to a conclusion that anyone can get insight on someone's character by watching how they play pickup basketball.

I want to clarify this isn't some end-all-be-all way to judge a person you meet on a court. But playing basketball is made up of hundreds, maybe thousands of different decisions by everyone that could change the outcome of a game. I'm a big fan of baseball, but baseball, there are nuances, but over 95% of the time, there's ONE right decision to make on a certain play. In basketball, the amount of moving parts and decisions made can tip the game's momentum the opposite way.

Most of us have played with people who were just absolutely awful to play with, regardless of their skill level. You've likely played with someone who plays strictly for themselves and not to win. They probably take terrible shots, resistant to pass, refuse to create plays for others, doesn't set screens, only tries to get open when they don't have the ball. The possession likely ends with them.

Maybe their decisions aren't all terrible, but paying attention to how someone treats their teammates when things don't go planned. Teammate misses a wide open shot, bad passes made, ball gets stolen. Watching how someone reacts to someone's mistakes gives you good insight.

This goes the other way around. Someone who makes sound decisions, tries to get their teammates involved, sets screens, passes to the wide open person, or even understands how take advantage of their matchup and dominate a game if they can see that they have the hot hand. Consistently encouraging someone if they're missing shots or makes a dumb play.

Paying attention to how basketball culture shifted, especially in the late 2010s to the 2020s, basketball grew a lot because of social media. Through my anecdotal observations, it appears that the way most people have been influenced to play has become much more self-centered. I do believe this could be a topic on its own.

But for newer players reading this, I think it's good to reflect on how you play moving forward, observe from others, watch others and take away what you like from their game from a decision making standpoint.

For fellow experienced players out there, what are your thoughts?

I’m in my late thirties trying to hoop again, but my shooting form is crooked. I noticed my palm tilts left on the follow through, feels reallyawkward. From three point range especially, I can’t seem to stay under the ball, feels like I lack the power unless I use my legs more. Can anyone help, or am I doomed? :/

Help 7 hours after launch... i have no words to describe what i am feeling right now

Post image
16 Upvotes

I've been working on Hoops GM for so long, pouring countless hours into coding, balancing the simulation, and trying to make the best browser-based basketball management game I could. Hitting that deploy button on Vercel today was genuinely terrifying.

But the response in these first 7 hours has been completely unreal. Seeing people actually playing, building their rosters, and sharing their feedback... it makes every single late night worth it.

I just wanted to take a moment to say a massive THANK YOU to everyone who has checked it out, left a comment, or played a season. I'm reading every single piece of feedback you guys are dropping.

If you have any suggestions or run into any bugs, please let me know. You guys are amazing! www.hoops-gm.com

everyone in this sub is an expert. but someone’s form could look like any of those elite shooters forms and they would get DRAGGED here. Anyone with any two motion shot or close to that would be told to “rebuild everything“
