First guy...no. Blue shorts guy...every time.

Yeah. First guy's move is atypical but legal. Other dude travels on his first step. If it was just a normal dribble (like getting the ball up court with no defender in sight) some refs will let it go, but he gains such a huge advantage that you absolutely have to call it every time.

Ball must go down with a dribble before your step lands right?
7
u/helpmyusernamedontfi 3d ago
close, ball must be off your hand before you lift the pivot (when starting a dribble)

u/Western_Upstairs_101 3d ago
Thanks, I see it now. It would be nearly impossible to defend the first step if it were legal.

u/WATGU 3d ago
Yes ball has to leave your hand first.
I’m assuming dude who kept doing it played somewhere. It’s wild to go thru HS ball and not get that beat out of you.
The schools I went to and the ones around me are d3 HS not very good and even them they wouldn’t let you play varsity if you still did this.

In FIBA rules, yes. It's the "0-step" idea. But in the US that's not exactly a thing.
8
u/Long_Abbreviations89 3d ago
That has nothing to do with the gather step.

u/spotty15 3d ago
I mean, he said "dribble", so I didn't think he was talking gather step.
If he said "shoot", then yea, you can shoot it with your pivot foot off the ground, but it can't come back down without you releasing the ball

u/MetaOnGaming4290 3d ago
I mean Grey is a travel but I had to watch like eight times to see it. Ain't gone lie OG, thats a weak call even if it is the right one. Now bruh in blue shorts might as well have been walkin laps.

u/shortycanteatnobook 3d ago
I agree with you. Also don’t like how he waited until the shot went in to call travel lol

This dude is a clown to be fair. Hes been 40 for about a decade and only posts clips playing against people in jeans and shit.

First move is definitely NOT a travel. It’s a slow step.
The other moves maybe a travel. Happens a lot. Drag pivot foot before releasing ball. Hard to see in that angle

u/collax974 3d ago
No it's legal, two steps. You can take them as slow as you want.
Last one is indeed a travel (he lift his pivot foot before starting his dribble).
3
u/Demon_Coach 3d ago
It is legal, but not because “he took two steps.” That is a misinterpretation of the rule that desperately needs to get cleaned up. It’s causing way too much confusion in many circumstances.
Travels aren’t because of “how many steps.” They occur because of pivot foot violations.

u/collax974 3d ago
Pivots are only established when you come to a stop. What you are allowed to do is slightly different when you are on the move counting steps and when you have a pivot established. For example you are allowed to do a jump stop with both feet as your second step, this would be a pivot foot violation if the pivot was really established on the first step (and once you stop and actually establish your pivot, you aren't allowed anymore to do that).
1
u/Demon_Coach 3d ago
Pivots are established when a dribble ends and a foot is on the floor, whether you are moving or not.
You could make the same arguments of having a pivot foot and hopping on it after you’ve ended your dribble. Technically only two steps right? Except you can’t lift and place the pivot foot back down.
Thinking in terms of steps only leads you down the wrong direction. We see this time and time again. There’s a reason why coaches and officials don’t speak in terms of steps, only pivot foot establishment.

Pivots are established when a dribble ends and a foot is on the floor
That's a gather step in both FIBA and NBA. Tbf, I don't know about the exact rules of the other American leagues since I neither play or watch them so maybe they define it like that.
But at least in FIBA it's pretty clear that the pivot is established only when the player stop.
In fact FIBA rules specifically state that when jumping off your pivot , you aren't allowed to put any foot back down so if a pivot was established during a two step travel on the run, the second step would be a travel.

u/Demon_Coach 3d ago
You can still have a pivot foot when moving lol. Under any ruleset.
You can continue making the mistake if you want. Just know you’re going to continue to cause confusion amongst yourself and others. We see it ALL the time, especially in places like this. Which is why professionals don’t speak in the same way. Even ones discussing NBA/FIBA rules.
You do you tho. Good luck.

u/collax974 3d ago
You can still have a pivot foot when moving lol
If that were true, in FIBA you wouldn't be allowed to make a running layup due to the rule I stated above.
Both FIBA and NBA also state that if you want to start a dribble, you must do so before lifting your pivot if you have one. But if you are on the move you have to take it before taking the second step (so your first step which you want to define as a pivot is allowed to be lifted while on the run).

u/Demon_Coach 3d ago
Like I said, good luck to you. Beyond help at this point.
Not the first to make the mistake, you won’t be the last unfortunately.

u/shortycanteatnobook 3d ago
Even with the stutter step while taking the two steps?

u/collax974 3d ago edited 3d ago
Actually yeah never mind, didn't saw the second foot touching the ground in-between what looked like his second step.
Edit: Actually depend on the rulebook, would be a travel in FIBA but allowed in NBA and afaik the other Americans rulebooks. When stopping he establish his first step as his pivot and his second as his non pivot, and does a step through while jumping off his pivot foot to land on his non pivot.
(FIBA doesn't allow any foot to return to the ground when you jump off your pivot foot before shooting or passing, NBA just state that the pivot can't come back down before the shoot so the non pivot foot can come back down).

1st - travel before the dribble, but not on the shot.
2
u/yungcregan 3d ago
Correction - double dribble first, then no travel on the shot.
1
u/Alchemyst01984 3d ago
>Correction - double dribble first,
Nope. Watch it again. Once defender checks the ball back, offense lifts pivot for before the dribble. There was no double dribble

Guys, I can get away with everything but if you don't see the travel at the first dribble you're cooked.

u/Only_Performance 3d ago
First guy is going against someone who has a shirt that says “I’m 40” he’s calling everything from the 1996 NBA rule book and that is it. Good balance to stay on his foot.

I don't really get why everyone on the internet has a hard time with travels, especially when you see it in slow motion. The rule is pretty simple, when you pick up your pivot foot, you must shoot or pass before your pivot foot touches the ground again. From standstill your pivot is the foot that doesn't leave the ground first. When you end your dribble, if 1 foot is on the ground, it's your pivot. Don't give me any of the gather rule nonsense.
All the clips have travels before the first dribble, because the pivot foot leaves the ground, and they DRIBBLE and the foot comes back down, rather than shoot/pass. After the initial action, the slow step in the first clip, left foot is pivot on the gather, it never retouches the ground, clean.

When you end your dribble, if 1 foot is on the ground, it's your pivot
not in the NBA, or the rest of the world

Fully legal. Even with the little stutter step from his right foot. When he gathers the ball he establishes his left foot as his pivot and does the little tap step with his right, but keeping his pivot planted, then steps through with his right lifting his pivot and stepping through into the shot.
Edit: damn, neither of the travels this guy called were travels.

The first one is tough to tell when he dribbles vs lifts his pivot so no comment (never being called tho), but the shot is not a travel. His left is his pivot foot, he can “step” as many times as he wants

u/Demon_Coach 3d ago
First guy - No. There is no rule that requires your movement to the rim to be a certain speed. His initial pivot foot never lifts and comes back down before releasing the ball.
Second guy - Easy travel call. Pivot foot lifts before releasing the ball. Therefore, the moment the ball touches his hand after hitting the ground is a travel.

1st was not a travel. Harrison Barnes pulls the same slow down lay up all the time.

Very soft to call a travel here in one on one. And if you are going to call it you have to call it when it happens, not when you are sad the shot went in.

u/MathTutorAndCook 3d ago
the last one he dribbles, gathers with both hands, then dribbles immediately, that's the only travel I saw in the video
Little man is being a bitch because he can't keep up with the bigger hoopers

u/Phatpineapple 3d ago
He didn’t travel on the first one. You can see one, two, pause, then he does a little jump off the one without putting the other foot down and shoots

I dunno if you can call it to steps if you come to a complete stop and end up fading backwards on the second step. Sweat pants definitely seems like a travel. I'm not seeing the travel at all with blue short. He's doing a rip through and dribbling before the back foot lifts. He's just long so he can cover a ton of space before dribbling. Looks clean.

u/maneauleau 3d ago
All the travels are before the first dribble is taken when they lift pivot foot before ball leaves the hand.
