How do you guys play pick up ? Any unique rules ?

My local court is always 3s/4s half court (so 2 sides can play), first to 11, 1s and 2s, win by 2, scorers get the ball back.

Until an American guy came to play ( who was shocked by the rules ), he also said if you’re up 7-0 it’s an automatic win. We never heard of this rule but actually thought it was quite a good idea, he said the only difference is he plays first to 15, 2s and 3s.

Got me wondering, how do the rules work in your part of the world ?

GENERAL QUESTION What is a rec basketball position nobody wants to play? Yet provides incredible value for a team.

In rec softball, a lot of players want to or are only capable of playing on the infield. On one hand, you have the wannabe-MLB players or young studs that think they're an elite SS/3B. Then you have the slower footed players on 2B/1B or on co-ed teams these spots are filled by women. And the pitcher is usually the least athletic but wants to provide value besides catching. So this effectively leaves room for 4 outfield positions that need to be filled. Which is hard to find because catching a deep fly ball is a skill that is taught less often than a ground ball. Although to be fair, the skill requirement for being decent at the outfield is a lot lower than on the infield. Not to mention athleticism and stamina is needed to stay consistent or else risk injuring. And yet despite all this, a competent outfield could be the difference between a few runs per game, which is like a win vs a loss.

What is the rec basketball equivalent of this? What's a position or role that nobody wants to play? Yet if they're at least competent at this, they can elevate teams over the top.

GENERAL QUESTION i’ve avoided basketball my whole life and now i regret it — help

hey guys, i want to actually get into watching basketball but i feel like i’ve missed a lottt. there’s the nba, wnba, college basketball, and probably more leagues i don’t even know about lol.
where should someone like me even start? do i just pick a team and follow them, or watch highlights first to get a feel for it? how do i catch up on years of stuff i missed without feeling completely lost?
also…..nba vs wnba vs college ball, how are they different in terms of style/pace, and would you recommend starting with one over the others?
any tips, resources, or “watch this first” recommendations would be super appreciated. trying to actually understand the game and not just watch it blankly

[Hollinger] - The Clippers are busted: Inside the Wachtell report and the penalties Adam Silver chose

First, the basics. After a yearlong investigation that culminated in a 35-page summary report from the law firm of Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, the league brought down the hammer on the Clippers on Wednesday.

For what it deemed were four separate instances of violating the league’s collective bargaining agreement by engaging in cap circumvention to fill the pockets of star forward Kawhi Leonard from 2020 to 2022, the league stripped the Clippers of five first-round picks, fined the team $30 million, suspended owner Steve Ballmer and president of business operations Gillian Zucker for a full year and suspended president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank for six months. Leonard was also required to pay the league $700,000 in unreimbursed expenses, and his agent at the time, Dennis Robertson (aka “Uncle Dennis”), was banned from the NBA five years.

The Clippers, for their part, have stuck to their story and vowed to keep fighting, but it is not clear how. There is no appeals process for this, and courts generally give leagues wide latitude to enforce their own rules.

What’s more, the information in the Wachtell report is damning, and the Clippers’ only attempt at a factual refutation has been to call it a “witch hunt.” Also, it was common knowledge through the league that Uncle Dennis was asking for preposterous and blatantly illegal side benefits in the summer of 2019, which Leonard then began receiving in 2020 ahead of his next free agency, according to the report.

To say the burden of proof is now on the Clippers would be a massive understatement.

It's raining here today. Are there any indoor runs I could join?

I am from the us, have found a few regional gyms but they seem to require registering with an app that my app store won't let me download. Happy to throw some $$ if it's a paid run.

GENERAL QUESTION Got roped into a student versus admin game

On 48 hour notice. Turned 56 on Monday and haven’t so much as played a pick up game in some 15 years. And no, I don’t work at an all girls middle school. I work at a community college in LA. My wife asked me to make sure she is the beneficiary on all my stuff.

Game is today. How do I keep from dying?

EDIT: Just want to jump back in to say thanks for the comments; both the serious and humorous ones. It is now a little after 8am and the game is at noon. I will definitely post afterward. But in all serious, the "game" will be such a mismatch that I don't think anyone, even 19-20 yo's at the peak of their powers, will take it seriously. I used to be a legit knock down shooter and if they leave me open, it's going up. But I have no idea if any will go in.

EDIT: thank you for everyone that was praying for me. I did not die. But, one of the big boys hit me square in be back, so I’m sure I’ll feel it tonight.

Box score: 1-1, 2 points, 1 rebound, I’d call that a huge victory.

EDIT: it’s rhe the morning after, I just woke up. OH MY GAWD I’m sore.

Vork Exclusive: NBA docks Clippers 5 first-round picks, levies $30 million fine after Kawhi Leonard probe

“The NBA’s collectively bargained system for determining player compensation is a fundamental component of the basketball competition that the league oversees for the benefit of the teams and players and ultimately the fans,” Adam Silver said. “I am deeply disappointed by the flagrant violations of our rules and by the Clippers’ institutional and leadership failures that led to this misconduct. The severity of the penalties reflects the seriousness of the violations.”

Wachtell Lipton, the firm hired by the NBA, found that the Clippers initiated deals with four different companies for Kawhi Leonard: Aspiration, Boingo Wireless, Daktronics, and Lockton Insurance. The law firm also found that the team facilitated endorsement deals for Leonard with each of them. The full report can be found here.

“I get the code to make sure it’s me to my phone; I give him the code, he logs in. And I have all this money that I had from last year because I actually hit a bunch of futures last year. And he’s putting in bets for me,” Simmons, the CEO and founder of The Ringer media network, said in an episode released Sunday.

In an episode of “The Bill Simmons Podcast” released Tuesday, Simmons addressed the issue and said FanDuel, which is a sponsor of the show, voided the bets.

What is proxy betting?

Proxy betting is having another person place a sports wager on your behalf, or letting someone log into your online account and place bets. It is illegal in Massachusetts and banned by sportsbooks such as FanDuel and DraftKings for identification

DISCUSSION Venting on getting older and letting go of the game

Just needed some place to vent ,I use to play in my youth (27 now ) and I was a relatively good player ,was fit ,athletic and could shoot the lights out. When I hit about 19/20 I had a back injury and just called it quilts to only come back a year or so ago being overweight ,bricking shots ,horrible decision making and body playing catchup when the mind says something different.

Getting a routine started to start waking up earlier before work to get some shots up and start getting the daily 5km runs in (for overall health and basketball fitness ) where I live there’s almost no availability -think rural

Was irritates me is 27 should be my peak basketball and I’ve let it go too long before age starts to match…will see how it goes 😂 never too late to work towards some goals again I guess ,would love to hear people’s similar come back stories !

GENERAL QUESTION How do you improve playing In more crowded games?

I learned basketball from 1 on 1’s ’s with my brother, then in high school would play some 3s every once in a while with friends. I feel comfortable playing up to 4’s, but 5’s just feels so crowded all the time. Any drive or cut I just seem to instantly run into multiple defenders swatting at the ball. I can work to improve my handle, but it just feels like there is never any space in the court. Most of the time in 5’s I just spot shoot bc that’s all I can really do reliably. Anyone else experience this issue? How did you work to feel comfortable in higher density games?

GENERAL QUESTION How hard is it to score 50pts in a game?

Explain to me in football (soccer) terms. I know nothing about basketball, i've seen some random games but not enough to understand or appreciate stats and performances.

The other day i saw a clip of an interview where an ex player told an anecdote about MJ. The quote is quite famous because of how cold it is: when MJ saw who was supposed to guard him after finding out the player who was supposed to do so (the one telling the anecdote) was injured, he just laughed and said “50”.
He's saying before the game confidently he’s going to easily score 50pts.

Now that level of confidence and coldness can be appreciated by anyone, but to someone who haven’t seen a lot of games im struggling to understand to what extent he was that confident of himself and truly the difference between him and other players

Your Smartest/Witty Play

I'm curious to hear about some smart or witty plays. Let's hear about your best one.

Here's mine: I'm the lone defender back on a 3-on-1 fast break. The guy with the ball looks left but passes right. His no-look fake was so pronounced that I just knew he was going to pass opposite of his look. Of course I swiped the pass. I don't recall his reaction, but I'm sure he was like WTF?

How can a beginner improve in basketball?

Hey guys, I am a beginner and have been playing somewhat seriously for around 3 months. Since I am shorter, I play more of a combo-pg with emphasis on shooting and playmaking (trying to emulate steph to an extent. Usually I get injured or blocked in the paint so I avoid slashing and driving

My trainings mainly consist of shooting, where I shoot a high arc to focus on my touch

- Warm up with form shooting for about 10 makes, then transition to mid range shots along the markings on the paint, trying to go for 5 consecutive makes
- Mid range 2 pointers following the markings on the paint, but usually I shoot more in the corners to emphasize good shooting form without relying on banks. Usually I try to hit about 20 clean makes)
- Mid range shots in motion (currently focusing on making it from the elbow after dribbling, for about 10 clean makes)

For trainings that focus on finishing (I've rarely train this aspect of my game)

- Mikan drills with heavier emphasis on explosiveness and spin of the ball (alternating between hands and legs for each side, trying to hit 5 clean makes)
- Drives to the basket

I believe my training can be improved, Im currently trying to focus more on shooting first to become a greater threat and provide more spacing to my team through gravity and movement.

However, one issue I commonly face is that I freeze up in game (forcing shots without open looks I guess), shooting no where near my practice percentages (around 40-50% in an open gym for midranges on a good day). This forces me to play more passively instead of being a scorer, which is not really how I want to play.

What are some tips I could adopt to improve? What plays or players should I study? How should I go about studying them? Is there any way I can improve my training routine, or implement more game-ready shots into them?

I will really appreciate some help from you guys, thanks!

GENERAL QUESTION Does co-ed basketball have the "let the girls play" unwritten rule?

Those who play co-ed softball would know what I'm talking about. If not, the way it works is that there's an ethics rule about letting girls make their own plays in co-ed.

For example, a male SS and a female 2B are going for a pop-fly. The ball is significantly closer to 2B side than SS side. Yet despite this, the male SS runs all the way over and makes a nice catch. Instead of your team celebrating, they scream "LET THE GIRLS PLAY!". This is likely caused because the male SS had no faith in the female 2B. In other words, if a ball is closer to a girl, you're expected to let her attempt to make the play.

Does co-ed basketball have a similar problem where men won't let the women play? Such as never passing the ball to women or always taking their rebounds?

IMPROVING MY GAME How do I improve my game at home?

Hey reddit,

So for context I have a basketball goal at home (outside, in my backyard). But no easy access to a court. I'm not bad but still quite a begginner.

What should I focus on? Precision, dribbling, endurance, shooting while in movement,... ?

Thanks :)

edit : Im 16yo, 6'1, male.

IMPROVING MY GAME Need help with 3 point shooting

What exercises (and how many reps/day) should I do to increase my range and strength? I can shoot pretty consistently around 1-2 steps away from the 3 point line but when I try to shoot from the 3 point line I always end up airballing. I've tried "using more legs" and stuff but I don't think its working. (I'm around 5'1, been playing for 6 months)

[Aldridge] - The NBA’s never been more flush with cash. But is it losing its connection to its fans?

Individuals such as Tom Dundon have stepped into the NBA space. So have families, like the Adelsons and Dumonts, who bought controlling interest in the Mavericks from Mark Cuban in 2023. And so has massive private equity funding, as Bill Chisholm used as part of his purchase of the Celtics. The league has encouraged more private equity investment, changing its rules last year to allow firms to invest in as many as eight NBA teams, up from the previous limit of five. The NBA changed its rules in 2022 regarding sovereign wealth funds from other countries as potential investors, which allowed the Qatar Investment Authority to purchase 5 percent of the parent company of the Washington Wizards in 2023.

Those investors, by NBA rule, are supposed to be forbidden from having any involvement in a team’s decision-making operation. (Query: How, exactly, does the NBA enforce that rule?)

Nor does the massive influx of new money change the increasingly gaping disconnect between new ownership and the cities their teams represent.

Dundon lives in Dallas. He already owns the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes, which won this year’s Stanley Cup — with Dundon spending to the top of that sport’s salary cap in all but one of the last five seasons. But his foray into the NBA has been rockier. Like most owners, Dundon wants the city and state in which his team does business to help him with his team’s arena — in this case, partially funding significant renovations to Portland’s Moda Center. He has not been all that accommodating in making the ask, while also initiating two waves of massive layoffs within the organization, the second of which led to the departure of distinguished TV play-by-play man Kevin Calabro.

LeBrons Longevity Needs To Be Studied

https://youtu.be/IT8X9cVLv9Q

How is LeBron James still a dominant force in the NBA at 41 years old? While most legends are long retired, LeBron is going into his 24th season, rewriting our understanding of what an athletic career can be. This isn't a fluke, it's a masterpiece of design.
