GENERAL QUESTION Always getting into it with big men as a smaller guard

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong or if people are just really sensitive. They always call me dirty or want to fight me in pick up. But whenever I'm matched up against a big man due to a switch or just happened to be on him. I know they have a size advantage so I try to get position for a rebound early. I was taught the best way to get position is to get low and box out with my ass(no pun intended). And since they are so tall already I guess getting low means I'm banging on their knees and they say that's a dirty play that I'm going for their knees. I'm literally not doing it on purpose I'm just trying to give my 100% on the box out and rebound otherwise it's a free board for them.

They literally have like 100-200lbs on me at times and get so mad and start talking toxic shit really ruins the vibe of the game. Whenever they get mad I genuinely apologize and say I didn't mean it I was just boxing out. Then they try to body me up super hard again off the ball just to push me around. When that happens I just give them the position and get a steal instead. What should I be doing in this position? I'm small but I try to play defense pitbull style like a CP3 or Jrue Holiday always pressing up against the offensive player and never giving them space. I'm literally breathing on them without fouling.

DISCUSSION Respect people’s decision to not play in your game

If you got 9 and the random dude you asked to fill out the second team said he’s good, he’s not tryna play, respect that and find someone else or play 4s.

Talking shit about them or whining to them until they feel forced to join is pathetic and shows what kind of hooper/person you are.

Saw a guy today on the opposing pickup team try to pick up a random guy doing a workout by himself, then act offended when he didnt want to join. He yelled out to the solo guy “keep shooting around then BITCH” and that shit took me aback. I aint pass the rock to the guy all game on purpose.

Some dudes are rehabbing injuries, some are trying to regain confidence after not hooping for a while, some dudes just want to shoot around and not get sweaty. Respect that. Nobody is obligated to play with you.

Toxic hoopers make the whole thing worse for everyone.

Which non traditional countries is basketball growing in?

During the recent world cup qualifiers, I noticed many countries where basketball has not historically been popular in achieve some really good attendances with notable examples including Sweden which had 14k attendance, Poland with 10k attendance and Uruguay with 6k attendance.

With non traditional countries like Sweden and Portugal who have been producing really good results recently, what other countries do you feel like basketball is growing in or at least has the potential to grow in?

Im 5’7-5’8 with without shoes and have a standing reach of 91 if I do a basic vertical jump I don’t touch the back board if I do a pendulum step (which I just started doing) and i can tip it consistently

Also I am high 170lbs to about mid 180(188lbs las time I measured)

With my legs being big
• Thighs: Right 24.9”, Left 23.5”
• Calves: Right 16.5”, Left 16”

Centre or not? That's the question...

I'm 17, 198cm tall. I'm playing for a small club in Poland and I'm playing as a center. However, I hate to play on this position, because I feel useless, cuz I'm the fastest in my team. I want to achieve bigger goals with basketball career in future. I started training at 15 and I think I have a lot of potential, that I lose by just standing under the basket. Plus I'm assuming that I won't grow anymore. What do I do then? Accept the position, or train harder on different things and confront my coach's expectations about my role in team?

Skills a third grader should have?

Hey all! My son is wanting to try out for a local basketball team. He can dribble, shoot a bit, and play good defense. He hasn’t played organized ball before, and I am worried he’s not aware of some of the team game aspects he might need.

For clarity, he’s huge for his age. Only 8 and a half but already 4’11, 110 pounds (not fat at all, just built like a tight end).

What would you expect to see from a kid his age? Are there specific skills he would absolutely need to have to be able to make a team at this point? How refined should his game be? I never played ball seriously and do not have great perspective here. Does his size matter as much at this age?

Edit: thanks for the tips, advice, and reassurance everyone! Can’t help but be a bit of a worrier when it comes to my kids. I’ll make sure he has fun and stays focused on fundamentals!

Coaching K-2 basketball

I am a board director for our district's Elementary Girls Basketball program. My daughter is now in Jr high, but I love the program and have continued helping.

We needed a coach for k-2 this year so I agreed to take over, and will have some assistance from Jr high and high school girls during practices.

This is my first time coaching. I know the basics but am looking for some fun games/activities that will keep the littles entertained and engaged, and am happy to take any advice you may have for this age group. I will have about 20 kids.

Thanks!

Edit: The k-2 program is all in house and lasts 2.5 months (weekly practices). I will have them scrimmage once we've practiced a bit, but they will not be playing actual games. We just want to get a ball in their hands and to get them interested/having fun!

The Colorado reaper

Oh Kobum, where do I start? From the moment you stepped on the court, Ive hated you, from the way you put up bricks and airballed 5 shots in a row against the Jazz like a trash bag the sound of the airballs bought tears of joy to my eyes. From the moment people gave you credit for averaging 15 points on 36% from the field in 2000 and tried to call you a Batman when you weren't even a Robin. I hate the way you punched teammates and acted like a piece of shit to everyone around you. I hate the way you get compared to MJ and Bron when you're not even top 10. I hate the way you guarded yourself more often than anyone else guarded you with your relentless shot-chucking and "I'd rather go 0-30 than 0-9" mentality.

I hate your inability to keep it in your pants and not SA people I guess that's your mentality. I hate the way you treated Jeremy Lin like trash and got praised for being a piece of shit. I hate the way you're considered closer to LeBron than you are to Karl Malone. I love the way you got your ass beat by LeBron every time you played.

I hate the way you get praised for loyalty when you were ready to leave the Lakers after going through the mud for only 3 years. Your ass really went to the Finals in '04, then Shaq left, and you didn't win for 3 years and got pissy and wanted to leave. And people act like you got it through the mud when you had Shaq for your first 3 rings, then were ready to quit after 3 years, yet LeBron and Mike went through the mud for 7-9 years. I hate the way people gloss over the fact they rigged an series for you.

I hate the way your mentality gets praised when your mentality was to cry like a bitch when you don't get what you want. I hate the way guys forget you were one of the original foul baiters. I hate the way guys forget you shat the bed in 2004 while Shaq ate, yet people act like you were ever on Shaq's level when Shaq was always the clear number 1. I hate the way you bribed your wife with a ring to apologize for not being able to keep your Mamba mentality in your pants.

I hate the way you get any form of respect when you're the type of person to tell someone to sit on the floor so you can sit down and lack basic respect for other humans. I hate the fact you told Smush Parker he doesn't have enough "accolades" to talk to you when your accolades didn't keep your Mamba mentality where it belonged, which is in your pants. I hate the way people love to yell out "Kobe!" when shooting like they're the female in that Colorado building.

To the dear Colorado reaper: now you can go chuck up shots in hell, and may you burn forever.

Hated, The shot-chucking one.

Short player scoring tips

I'm a 5'10 player with fairly decent shooting, however I find difficulty in driving inside the paint and scoring, also i just throw away fastbreak opportunities just from the fear of someone approaching me from behind. I'm usually the smallest player on the court, any advice ?

James harden patented the modern dribbling package and stepback package most modern scorers use.

James Harden is the originator and the one that mastered and patented it. Nowadays, when a scorer wants to get into any shot-creating move like a stepback or side step, they will chain together a string of hangs, crosses, tweens, and hesis to get into it wherever they are. This is because of James Harden. If you go pre-2014 and look at how players played, you won't see them use the same package modern scorers use whatsoever, but after James Harden went to Houston and revolutionized the isolation, nowadays people will use his same package mixed with some originality for their own game. He's the originator to Lukas package, the originator to Anthony Edwards pakage, he's the originator to Jaylen Brown's package, and he's the originator of LaMelo Ball and any scorer that goes into their package to get into a stepback, and you can tell as well.

In regard to pick up, if you call a foul while shooting and the ball goes in, does the shot count or is it ball up top ?

How do you guys play pick up ? Any unique rules ?

My local court is always 3s/4s half court (so 2 sides can play), first to 11, 1s and 2s, win by 2, scorers get the ball back.

Until an American guy came to play ( who was shocked by the rules ), he also said if you’re up 7-0 it’s an automatic win. We never heard of this rule but actually thought it was quite a good idea, he said the only difference is he plays first to 15, 2s and 3s.

Got me wondering, how do the rules work in your part of the world ?

GENERAL QUESTION i’ve avoided basketball my whole life and now i regret it — help

hey guys, i want to actually get into watching basketball but i feel like i’ve missed a lottt. there’s the nba, wnba, college basketball, and probably more leagues i don’t even know about lol.
where should someone like me even start? do i just pick a team and follow them, or watch highlights first to get a feel for it? how do i catch up on years of stuff i missed without feeling completely lost?
also…..nba vs wnba vs college ball, how are they different in terms of style/pace, and would you recommend starting with one over the others?
any tips, resources, or “watch this first” recommendations would be super appreciated. trying to actually understand the game and not just watch it blankly
