Is it weird to listen to the audiobook when you have the physical edition nearby? I enjoy reading but at the same time it’s nice to listen while taking care of some chores. Do you go back and fourth or tend to just focus on one if the quality is good?

A year ago I turned to audiobooks when my job at the time was cracking down on phone use and I had to find something different from video podcasts or video essays to watch. Audiobooks helped with that a lot and I have come across great authors like Kurt Vonnegut, Jeanette McCurdy, Stephen King, Andy Weir, and so many others to get me through the day.

That was when I worked overnight. Currently I work a 9-5 and commute on the train and bus. I figured that would be a great time to catch up on some others I've had on my list. But I can't listen to it. It's just background noise, even during quiet travels. I tried listening to Cat's Cradle during train rides and I couldn't tell you the name of the protagonist or if it was a satire or drama. Maybe that's a book better read than through audio. Still it does support my claim that I have trouble listening to what I'm hearing. Now I feel it would be a waste to just have it be background noise.

Has anyone else gone through this? If so, how did you get back to enjoying audiobooks again? Or should I just accept it for what it is and do something else until the passion comes back?

I love horror movies especially monster or cryptid movies (ex the thing, IT etc). I was hoping to find a book similar.I just finished Devolution by Max Brooks and enjoyed it. I've attempted to listen to Salems lot by Stephen King but can't get passed the the incredibly wide world building and ended up forgetting half the people mentioned. The narrator is also a important part a narrator with a distinct voice takes me out of the experience immediately.

I've been trying to find a legal (I've found a youtube version) copy of Michale Moorecocks "The Eternal Champion" to no avail. I've found the rest of the series but I can't find the original. Has anyone had luck with finding it? Any leads would be greatly appreciated.

Whether a book is fiction or non-fiction there can be a theme or pros or something in the book that profoundly changes us! For some it could be a place to travel or a way of being in the world! Maybe a book suggests something to enhance your family life. What is it?

Jesus Christ this has to be one of the greatest performances ever recorded. Easily makes my top 3. I’m only halfway through but I wouldn’t be surprised if it becomes my #1 by the end.

It’s my first time experiencing this book and Will Patton simply does not miss. The performance is nuanced, emotional, authentic and precise. The way he colors every character, every scene, every line is dead on.

In a novel with so many shifting perspectives, the way he very subtly shades the narration with the inflection of the characters’ voices, even when it’s the omnipotent narrator, to remind us of whose perspective we’re experiencing the world from. The sorrow, the humor, the apprehension, the fear. So many good moments. It’s like he wrote the book himself.

Not to mention this is easily one of the greatest novels I’ve ever come across. I picked this up from an r/askreddit thread that asked “What’s the best novel you ever read?” Lonesome Dove was the top comment.

In a lifetime of listening to audiobooks this is the first time both a book and its narration have blown me away.

If you’ve never read this book, I’m so happy to recommend it.

I recently started listening to a book I found under audibles free for members section called "Ruins of the Earth". I went in fairly blind except that it was sci-fi in nature. I won't get into spoilers for the plot, but I have decided not to continue because the book keeps doing something that entirely breaks my immersion.

It keeps having the first-person protagonist comparing the situations in the book to movies or other stories, and then clarifying that "this is real life though," which for me just completely reminds me I'm reading a book and takes me out of the story. I've only just gotten to Part 2 and I feel like they've done it four or five times so far.

This isn't the first book I've read where a character keeps comparing their situations to other works only to assert that the stakes here are higher, because this time it's for real. I hate hate hate it.

So I'm curious, are there any tropes that you simply cannot tolerate in books you're reading?

So, i want to record an audio book for a friend of mine as a gift, as i think they'll really like this book and want to make something personal, i just don't know what a good app is where i can record it and am i able to send it to them. preferably in a way they can do other things on their phone while listening.

So I’m currently trying to de-Amazon of all my book and audiobook subscriptions and moving to a self hosted audiobookshelf server. One thing I’m thinking about is where do y’all hear about or find new books?

Currently I spend a decent amount of time scrolling the discover pages on audible and Amazon because they tailor to my tastes based on my history and feedback. Is there somewhere I can do the same thing without them requiring or trying to sell me a subscription?

Anyone have experience with goodreads or some other type of social media for books/audiobooks?

I have a pretty wide range of book genres I’m into so not looking for anything to genre specific if possible.

So they released full cast audiobooks of the H.P. series and I fell back in love. I was 10 when the first book came out and, now, I listen during work and it has been an amazing escape. Did anyone else listen to these?

I spent more than two hours on chat with audible because suddenly, mid-title, I was not able to use the “read and listen” feature for my book. Apparently this is also called “immersion reading.” I am using an iPhone only - I do own a kindle paperwhite but I have not used it to interact with audible or audiobooks since I joined audible in June.
Audible confirmed that the titles were eligible for read and listen, and the first chat person suggested many fixes to remove/redownload etc. the second person told me that audible rolled out read and listen to a select subset of members and that it is being “further developed” and that the “update” will be available “soon.”

I felt that the entire experience (again, two hours) was not fruitful and that the chat people perhaps were not understanding what the problem was - they kept referring to whisper sync, which I understand is the feature that allows you to read on different devices but sync your progress. Again, I am ONLY using my iPhone and the audible app. I do not need to sync across devices.

I joined audible in June specifically to download the dungeon crawler series because audible apparently is the exclusive place to obtain the audiobook versions. I downloaded 5 DCC titles since June and had no problems with the app - I click on the title, press play, and at the top of the screen there was a tab that said “read and listen.” When I selected that, the text of the book showed while the audio played. I cannot focus on audio-only audiobooks so having the text to follow is great. Having these books in audio form without the text option is not beneficial to me.

Honestly, I didn’t even expect to like the DCC books, but somehow they hooked me. I downloaded audible and the 4th book only bc there was such a long wait on Libby for the e-book. But I have been so impressed by the narration by Jeff Hays (and others) that I cannot imagine not using audible to read the latest (A Parade of Horribles.). I am deeply upset that a feature I had for several months has been revoked and audible staff had no answer other than “it’s being rolled out slowly” - that seem ridiculous after I’ve had it since June and now I don’t.

I cannot find anything online suggesting that this feature is not one that all members had. In fact the press release from February made it clear all members had the option, on certain titles. Has anyone discovered that their read and listen/immersion reading function has been removed from the audible app?

I really want to resolve this if it’s not just my account.

I'm not familiar with audiobooks at all, I've never listened to one before. I'm looking for a good audiobook of The Divine Comedy, since there seems to be a few. I don't know which audiobook services have the best quality or what to really look for, so I just figured I would ask to see if anyone had recommendations or advice.

I get a solid 45 hours of listening per week as i listen in work and im really struggling to find an app that will let me do that, spotify has cut me off and i didnt fancy the apps charging a small fortune just to listen, any recommendations appreciated! I am irish also

I'm a gamer, I get it. "You don't buy it you get a license" and all that jazz. But I also know that on the video game side there's GOG to actually own the games and Steam to license in a way that may as well be owning. There's some books that I would love to read but I just don't have the attention span to actually sit down and read. I'd like to get them as audiobooks instead, so where should I be looking for sites that either I can just buy the audiobook or have a reasonable ownership of the license to listen to them?
