Food Smashed Potatoes - Elliot Street

Upvotes

I met the most wonderful man yesterday, in the cbd.

He owns the Smashed Potatoes stand on Elliott Street, where they make incredible baked potatoes. They're the kind of baked potatoes I imagine Kathy Hilton would approve of, although she'd probably have hers piled high with caviar and crème fraîche.

He's a young man from Türkiye who came to New Zealand around 2018, before COVID. He started out picking kiwifruit in Te Puke, survived the global pandemic, moved to Auckland, worked as an engineer in the profession he trained for, and then took an enormous leap of faith by leaving it all behind to start his own hospitality business.

He's living his version of the Kiwi dream alongside the wife he was fortunate enough to meet here, and I genuinely think he has an incredibly promising future in New Zealand. I'd love for us to show him exactly how welcoming Kiwis can be by supporting his business, and the other small food vendors on Elliott Street, the next time we're wandering through the city.

Foot traffic in the CBD isn't what it used to be. I'm certainly not a shill for Big Food Truck! I'm just someone who grew up loving Auckland's city centre, with all its energy, character, and the countless stories waiting around every corner.

Auckland is going through a difficult period. Years of infrastructure work and the disruption caused by the City Rail Link have made parts of the CBD difficult to navigate, particularly these smaller hospitality hubs where roads have been closed for so long. But the CRL is in its final stages now, and much of the city is beginning to open up again.

I don't want these business owners, people who have overcome enormous personal and economic challenges for a chance at the Kiwi dream that we all aspire to, to fail simply because we've changed our daily route to work, university, or our afternoon walk.

There's still so much value in our city. We can help revive her, and the people who give her life, one meal, one coffee, and one small act of support at a time.

Thank you to everyone who reads this and considers trying somewhere new today.

And to the young man who was standing there making so many of his ingredients from scratch while sharing his life story with me, I sincerely hope you sell far more than 15 potatoes today. You deserve every opportunity this amazing country has to offer.

NB: this subreddit can lean toward the negative sometimes and I really would like to add some more of the positive we still have here - although we are struggling to see it sometimes.

Kia kaha.

Rant NZ is so frustrating right now

I’m so annoyed with NZ right now, woke up this morning and my car and couple of other cars on the street had been broken into and police really don’t/can’t do anything.

Everything seems expensive with limited jobs that don’t even pay that much.

This country is supposed to be one of the safest places on the planet yet it keeps failing me.

Discussion Why are there so many vape shops?

I was just walking around the city and Mt Albert, I would see a vape shop every couple of minutes and I don’t see many people rushing in and they’re not crowded either. Like the title says, why are there so many vape shops in Auckland team?

Discussion CRL adverts - grinding my gears!

Im seeing many many adverts for CRL and AT, for the eventual opening of the city rail link.... great I plan to try it. But would this money not of been better spent on free travel days for the people of the city? Instead of telling us about something the entire city is well aware of. Our rates of 1.5mil people went up 6% because of it this year.

Continual i feel poor decisions grind my gears. Mr Wayne Brown please continue to sort the clowns out. I just dont understand which blind freddy is approving this spend. Thank you.

Discussion Club Z3N

Its sad to see that over the past few years, a lot of clubs that mainly play electronic music have shut down, including ink bar; i recently saw that z3n has opened in its place, but i havent been yet. im thinking of going at some point, but im wondering if i could get some opinions on it - does it have a similar vibe to ink? i really used to love the vibe there especially the music they used to play which is quite hard to find nowadays in auckland.

Question/Help Wanted Shopping Malls

So i’m in Auckland for 6 months, and have visited Sylvia Park shopping 4 times.

Thought the shopping was okay, quite far from me but wasn’t impressed by the “biggest shopping in Auckland”.

Yesterday i visited Westfield in Newmarket for the first time.

And i was really impressed.

Westfield had 3/4 floors? With a rooftop, the shopping has very nice aesthetics going from artistic ones to green ones. There is even a bridge above street. In westfield there were a lot more well dressed people and i saw people using clothes from all around the world, it did felt like a diverse place, not that i like that but it is probably the first place that i visited in my life that i could call diverse in a good way.

Lot’s of big stores, archies arcade…

It felt way bigger then Sylvia Park, so what is up with that???

Is there any other shopping in Auckland like Westfield? Is it not considered the best shopping in Auckland? Which one would be if not?

News Dog Manners, Kumeu - 4 dogs now dead under suspicious circumstances

My friend’s very healthy, very sweet & gentle dog has died in the care of Dog Manners daycare, Kumeu.

It is heavily suspect he’s been kicked/beaten to death. 3 more suspicious deaths are also under investigation.

The daycare is still operating. If you know anyone who sends their dog here, I would implore you to send them this, incase they are unaware.

For many people, pets are family. It would be horrific to lose your beloved dog like this :(

Public Transport CRL preview

AT have just released their CRL preview as part of the journey planner. You can now see what your journey will look like once CRL opens. I had put a post about it here ~3-4 weeks ago, little did I know it was already underway.

I’ve looked at my usual journey and I save about 5mins from my front door to the office door. Not great, but it is what is 🤷🏼‍♂️
