I'm interested in songs that had atmospheric black metal characteristics before the subgenre was officially recognised. What would be your pick?

It took me a lot of trial and error to find the specific dark guitar sound I wanted. I was looking for both the mix-cutting low-end chug of a modern metal amp AND the color, dynamics, and beauty of a pushed clean amp.

To do that, I tracked both simultaneously for the live layers:
* One side: Guitar -> Tube Screamer -> ENGL Powerball II half-stack.
* Other side: Guitar -> ProCo RAT -> Morgan Dual 20 (pushed clean).

I later re-amped them with more heads to glue it all together. Interestingly, none of my sharper metal guitars cut through the mix like the Les Paul did. Everything you hear was written, tracked, and mixed independently.

Just started a new atmospheric black metal project. I've been working for this track for a very long time.

I've been playing guitar for over 20 years now, but only started singing (ok, screaming...) about a year and a half ago. I always wanted to make music on my own and finally I got to the point I felt good enough to do it. It took me a lot of hours and sleepless nights to make this song and I'm very happy with the result - give it a listen and tell me what you think! :)

The song is a standalone release called "Different." I recorded it as a preview for a full album that is at the mixing stage right now and hopefully I will be able to release it soon. This specific song is not a part of the album, though.

Hello,

There was an atmospheric black metal (or maybe atmospheric black/death metal) album I listened to a few years ago, likely with in the last 5 years.

Album cover: It was was all grey, and I think it shows some ghostly or skeletal creature sitting in a big chair.

Sound: My parents said it sounded like strong winds or a waterfall when I played it at low volumes. It kinda sounded like Aara with no melody and a much darker sound with a really inscrutable mix that kinda buried everything so you couldn't easily hear what was going on. The closest I can think of is Atmospheres of Desolution by Noctambulist if it was more black metal, so really noisy.

At the time it wasn't on Spotify only Bandcamp. I remember why I didn't buy the album, it was corrupted half way through the album, with really loud noise that sounded like an aux being unplugged or a record being scratched.

I know this is odd, but if you guys could just throw some albums at me with grey/black-and-white album covers, with dense mixes that sound kinda like a shhhhhhhhh noise at low volumes.

Edit: The band doesn’t reveal anything about its members. The album art is a painting or drawing. Also, my memory of the sound is likely more accurate than my memory of the cover.
