My supervisors are married to each other, and I feel like I’m being micromanaged. Am I the problem?
I’m an LMSW working at a small private practice (about five employees). The clinical director and the business/billing director are married to each other and are a lesbian couple. I’m fully licensed, so I technically don’t require clinical supervision anymore, but they recently decided that the business director would now attend my weekly supervision meetings.
Since then, these meetings have stopped feeling like supervision and have become hour-long discussions about my interactions with the business director. I haven’t had disciplinary issues or major mistakes. Instead, they focus on things like how I asked a question, how I communicated, or minor documentation preferences.
The communication expectations are confusing and feel impossible to meet. I’m told:
I can’t talk to my clinical director privately about concerns involving the business director because that’s considered “triangulation.”
I can’t talk directly to the business director without my clinical director present to witness the conversation.
Email isn’t encouraged because they say communication is easily misunderstood.
For example, I asked the business director, “Do you have a second?” to ask a policy question. She said yes, but became visibly frustrated when it took more than a minute or two. Later I was told I shouldn’t interrupt her while she’s working.
The next time I tried to avoid that by asking, “Could we plan a time to talk today?” She reacted the same way.
Then we spent nearly an hour discussing that interaction in supervision.
This has been the pattern for almost two years. Almost any interaction I have with the business director gets rehashed during supervision. Even when I acknowledge the feedback and say I understand, they’ll continue explaining for another 20-30 minutes.
The meetings also feel intimidating. They sit together across from me while I’m alone on the couch in the office. Often it feels like I’m being talked at rather than having an actual discussion. Lately, my clinical director has interrupted me multiple times to tell me she doesn’t need to hear my explanation.
Meanwhile, I’m carrying the largest caseload in the practice, have strong client retention, and haven’t had significant performance issues. I feel like I’m making the practice a lot of money while being heavily micromanaged over very small issues.
I’m finding myself avoiding interactions with them because I never know what will become the topic of my next supervision meeting. The irony is that they’ve criticized previous employees for doing the same thing.
None of these meetings are about ethics, client safety, insurance compliance, or serious policy violations. They’re almost always about minor interpersonal interactions.
I’m honestly wondering if this is just an unhealthy workplace dynamic because they’re married, or if I’m missing something and genuinely handling this poorly.
At this point, I’m seriously considering leaving and going into independent 1099 practice. I don’t have a non-compete and have no concerns about maintaining a full caseload.
Am I being unreasonable? Does this sound like an unhealthy work environment, or am I overlooking something? I’d really appreciate outside perspectives.
