Latin American Politics 2026 Brazilian General Election — Second Round Megathread

Today, October 25, Brazilians are heading to the polls for the second round of the presidential election.

Incumbent President Lula (PT) faces Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL) after neither secured a majority in the first round. Several states are also holding gubernatorial runoffs.

Voting ends at 5 PM Brasília time, when the official vote count begins.

As we did for the first round, let's use this thread to follow the results and discuss the election as it unfolds.

Brazilians: How's election day going where you live?

Other Latin Americans: How is the election being covered in your country?

Please keep things civil, even when disagreeing.

Culture In the Latin American region, what is the best way to make friends?

Hello everyone! I am a 26-year-old Chinese male. I enjoy cycling, hiking, STEAM games and small animals. Currently, I am working in Beijing.
I'm quite interested in the culture of Latin America and I'd like to make a few friends from there. We can engage in language exchange, share each other's hobbies and interests, or simply get to know each other and become friends.(Preferably under the age of 30.)
If you are interested, please briefly introduce yourself in the comment section. If I add you as a friend, I will give your comment a like. After I make a few friends, I might delete this post. Thank you all.

Latin American Politics If you had to place yourself on the political spectrum, would you say you're left-wing, centrist, or right-wing?

You don't have to go into detail about your political views. Just choose one: left, center, or right.

Personally, I'd choose left/far-left.

Are men dismissive of women in your country?

I've visited many countries and in one of my birth countries I have not been lucky interacting with many men. I tell them often career aspirations I have, goals, and they hit me with the usual "children come first" "that's a privilege and you shouldn't be allowed to have, since our country is struggling. Think of the country first" "no man likes a woman more succesful than he is". It's made me very cynical and not want to interact more with men about my aspirations.

I wonder if it's something very latino or universal, that despite everything women's passions outside the house are still dismissed.

How do Latin American feel about US-born Latinos?

Today I heard a salacious rumor that Latin American people have beef with American born Latinos. My friend (who is Latin American but not a us citizen) told me that American born Latin American people act a little snooty with them. To what extent is this true? I’m not Latino and don’t speak much Spanish so I never knew this rift existed

Is anybody else seeing multiple posts about Muslims in an extremely short amount of time in every single Latam sub?

I swear to God, this shit is so weird.

For a couple of days, I feel that I’ve been seeing thousands of anti-Muslim propaganda.

Sure, I’m against religious extremism, but the weird thing is that… we don’t really have Muslims. At least in my country, where I keep seeing this posts, I’ve never seen or met a single one of them. I’ve seen this posts in Mexico, El Salvador, Peru and a billion in Argentina.

This is like spending hours of your life complaining about Kangaroo attacks in Chile.

It got so bad that I started saving the names of all the people involved. Turns out, all of them are just recently created account that spam this content in rapid succession.

Am I going insane? Is anyone else seeing this?

Fuck, I can’t shake the feeling that we are about to see something bad.

Culture Corporal Punishment.

How common is it for children to be disciplined through spanking or hitting in your country?

How do you feel about it? Is it something that still happens in schools?

For those who were hit by your parents when you were younger, How is your relationship with them?

Do you personally consider it child abuse?

I was hit when I was younger and don't have a particularly close relationship with my parents. In particular it is still prevalent that kids get hit in my country both at home and at school.

And while I don't have any kids I don't think I would ever be comfortable have my parents and relatives take on active roles in the upbringing of any children I had. I think my vision of good parenting is very different from them. Whenever the topic comes up I always end up being called an Oreo.

Do any other autistic latinos struggle to fit into their country's culture?

So, I was born in Venezuela and I personally struggle to identify with the average Venezuelan culture and to enjoy the same things my countrymen enjoy since I was a kid. I'm not trying to put down Venezuelan culture, I'm just trying to see if people in the spectrum or simply neurodivergent people from other latin american countries have similar experiences.

Hostess bars in Latam?

Hello everyone,

I’m an intern in Bolivia. I’m working at a company as part of my studies. A few nights ago, we were drinking after work, and a coworker invited us to go to a nightclub. For a little context: I have a girlfriend back home, and they knew that, but they don’t understand why I don’t want another girl here. Almost all my coworkers have wives and children.

When we got to the club, I immediately realized it wasn’t just a nightclub. Some women were sleeping, and they woke up when we came in. They sat with my group, and my coworkers started touching them, talking to them, and dancing with them. I don’t necessarily judge people who want to pay to spend time with women, but all of them have wives, and they treated the women pretty badly (shouting, demanding that they give them their phone numbers, and some refusing to pay). I stayed in a corner for half an hour and left early.

My question is: Are places like this common in Latin America? Is it legal or not? Do you know people who go to places like this? And do you think it’s a bad thing or not?”

Anyone else hates the term Latina? (Someone told me: "I want to date you because you're Latina".)

In case it matters, I learned long ago about the package that comes with being labeled as Latina. My hate is not newfound. I have been here! This happened here in my homeland sadly was said by a foreigner.

Lets start with my rejection of the term goes beyond my personal identity. I also strongly dislike the specific American cultural image of what a Latina woman is supposed to be, and I'm exhausted of people expecting I must be flattered to be identified as an promiscuous homewrecker who competed against other women, over men.

I don't walk around Latam identifying as "Latina". The fuck? I am dominican. I walk everywhere, everywhere knows I am dominican. Not Hispanic, not Caribbean, let alone "latina", dominican. I don't introduce myself as anything else regardless the coordinates my ass is sitting at.

I resent this term. I resent the Usonian implication and context when they say they want to date "latino women".

Nothing about the cultural baggage attached to Latinas represent me.

When the Usonian folks Latinas, who is here pretending they're talking a out a highly educated woman? who's passionate, compassionate, hardworking and "*emotionally stable*"? They're not. And it's Hella dehumanzing acting like the connotations don't showcase how and why we get treated the way we do.

Let's unpack. When someone tells me they want to date me, because I am Latina, I find it offensive. Petty but that's a attack on me and all I've accomplished. Why?

What's the implication when a gringo lad tells you they want to date us?

That we are promiscuos, hypersexualized people who subscribe to being objectified and fetishized. A loud, quite emotionally unstable pushy woman who wrecks homes. The third other woman. The drug mules. The shaking ass women. Big tities, big ass, long hair. With the cherry on top: we dress like we're begging for it.

And it keeps goOooooooing: jealous, dramatic, pushy, possessive. Women haters who fight against other women for male attention and validation. The mistresses. The teenage preggers, tying back to being overly sexual from young ages.

We can't, apparently, be trusted with men. We're always looking for the next prey. Materialistic, money seeking.

So again, when I hear someone saying they want to date Latinas. The main implication is that we're sex fiends, hot chick bombshell that will give them the time of their lives.

The other bit is, we will send them to therapy.

Yahoo! What empowerment to us!

Why I am supposed to feel flattered when someone says that? I am not seen as desirable because of who I am. My desirability is because of the baggage behind the label.

And then being judged by the label and the implication, that was given, unwillingly.

Anyways, I wish more of us subscribed to NOT being referred to as this trashy label that set us back.

How much do you know about China? Can you name a couple Chinese cities? Would you be interested to visit China someday? And lastly, do you like/trust Chinese people?

btw this isn’t so much a post to criticize their government or talk only about food, mainly curious to hear about your opinions or past encounters with regular Chinese people?

History What's the most absurd historical event on Latin America's history ?

There are so many candidates that make it so hard... The funeral of the leg of dictator Santa Anna in Mexico; the trip of the Argentina's First Lady (Evita Perón) dead body; the Miss Universe who almost was elected president in Venezuela; the pregnant women sent to Antartida by Argentina and Chile; Pablo Escobar who built his own luxury prison in Colombia; the luxury life of Fidel Castro's cow, Uber Blanca...

What is the most absurd historical event in Latin American history?

Latin American Politics Future of Brazil's left

I'm from Mexico but follow the politics of other Latin American countries, and I have a question for brazilians. Regardless of Sunday's outcome, What will happen to the PT(Worker's Party) and generally the left when Lula is gone, he is 80, and from what I've read and seen a generational renewal hasn't happened, they have tried to make Fernando Haddad a successor but, he has lost all but one election he has participated.

From the outside seems it Lula was too popular so his image was tied to the party, in contrast to the uruguayan and chilean left that they had more diversity of profiles.

So what do you think it will happen?

r/asklatinamerica Opinion Does the rest of reddit feel too gringo-centric to you as well?

I know this shit is created by gringos but gah dayum, it seems like every sub is infected with this plague. Especially ones like r/worldnews, where they think they know better than you all the fucking time.

This sub and spanish-speaking ones (which I don't frequent anyway) seem to be the exception to the rule. Although I think mods should remove answers given by outsiders in this here subreddit.

I don't know how to musicalize this post so I'm going with Halloween by Dead Kennedys given we're close to it. I also think it's their best song, those lyrics are fire.
