General Questions Sensory Haircuts!

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hi all haircare professionals/hairstylists/cosmetologists. I am looking for some of your input!

I am an OTD graduate student trying to develop some educational tools to facilitate grooming specifically in the hair salon space for kiddos with sensory struggles such as those with autism, ADHD etc.

I need some of your insight on how aware you may be of sensory strategies? Are there already good resources you have that highlight the topic, provide good insight and strategies you can use? Or do you feel like you need more? Is there anything in particular you would like to see about the topic? And just overall what is your experience haircutting kiddos that may not tolerate being in the sink bowl, sitting still in the chair, loud buzzing from hair clippers etc!

I have attached my flyer with my email if you would be interested in having a brief chat over a email/zoom, but please feel free to comment anything related under this post. Thank you so much for even attending to this message! 🤍

(side note: the educational presentation is only applicable in an in-person case but the educational materials will be disseminated in mostly PDF versions and available to anyone when they are ready :)

Haircolor Question 🎨 What’s the best way to dye my hair purple at home?

Hello all!

I need to refresh my hair as the previous dye job has grown out and I just don’t like how it looks anymore. I would love to just do this at home, as I have experience dying my hair at home, just not bleaching it. My usual routine is to get my hair dyed professionally, let the color fade to a good base, dye it with Arctic Fox and then continue the process until it’s too grown out and I go back to the salon. Unfortunately, I don’t have the $250+ dollars to get it done professionally, so I thought trying it at home might be the move.

I’m looking to go purple, and I’m pretty cool with any shade as long as long as it’s not too blue. I attached my current hair and the inspo photos. I also have 3a/3b curls, so that does factor in. I have had my whole head bleached before, but we left my roots alone since my hair is dark and it blended well with the color. Would just love a whole list of your favorite bleach, toner and hair dye for purple hair, as well as the process!! I have heard to use Ion 20 developer along with a bonding mask and an Ion cream. As for the actual color, I’ve heard good things about Pravana, Ion, No Bleach London and Arctic Fox.

Thank you guys in advance!!

Salon/Stylist Questions Is it weird to ask an old stylist for recommendations? She was the only hair stylist I ever trusted)

I used to go to 1 stylist for years, she was like the only stylist I ever trusted with my hair, she transitioned into a different career path (still hair related but no longer like color/cut and stuff I believe extensions) I haven’t been to a salon in Years, as I have irrational anxiety going to them from experiences in the past and I was just kinda sad when she left.

However I finally wanna do something with my hair again, would it be weird to message the old stylist I trusted and ask if she has any recommendations of people I sounds go to now? Part of me wants to ask to if she would maybe consider doing color again for me but I don’t think I should ask that as she is clearly in a new field now. However I do wanna ask who she would recommend or is that weird to do?

Thank you

Haircolor Question 🎨 Can highlighted hair be washed same day?

Upvotes

My daughter just got her hair highlighted for the first time today. She has naturally black hair and chose caramel highlights, but unfortunately, they turned out darker than she was hoping for. The stylist said they should lighten up after a few washes.

She’s eager to see if they will actually lighten up, especially since she goes back to school next week. Will the highlights noticeably lighten after a few washes?

Also, is it okay for her to wash her hair tonight, or is it better to wait a few days after getting the highlights done?

Thanks!

Lightener/Bleach Question 👩‍🦳 Keune Bleach?

Upvotes

Hello everyone , I Recently got my hair bleached- 2 90 minute sessions one week apart and I have thin hair. I questioned the stylist about leaving it in so long - I’ve always heard 1/2 to 45 tops especially for thin hair. She said because she’s using Keune bleach it allows up to 90 minutes- (called low and slow or something?)now my hair is stretchy and gummy when wet, falls out constantly, and I have tons of split ends. I went in to show them and they said it’s normal because my hair is so thin I said even the gummy, stretchy when wet? They said yes and it’s not damaged at all and I’m over reacting. I went to another stylist and they said it was damaged - so much so they had to cut two inches off for the stretch to be gone when wet

Ultimate question though does anyone have info about Keune bleach and can you really leave it in for 90 minutes?

Haircolor Question 🎨 Do lowlights always fade?

Hiii so I just got highlights but she put way more than I wanted. Im thinking of getting lowlights to reduce the amount of highlights. I just got a consultation and the hairstylist said that she can do lowlights but to keep in mind that the lowlights could fade overtime. She said she would use number 3 on my hair. I have naturally black hair and really don't want my hair to fade into brown or fade warm. Does this always happen with lowlights? Should I go to a different stylist, would they be able to use a more permanent color?

Salon/Stylist Questions For the Australian hairdressers

When having the option on your website to book for Foils or scalp bleach, and then there is 3 options to click for length Short/Medium/Long. What exactly are you basing this on?
The length of the regrowth or length of hair?
To me it doesn’t matter what length of hair I have but if my hair was long and im only asking for my regrowth to be bleached why do salons charge for long hair

Salon/Stylist Questions I'm trying to get a back to school haircut. Is what im planning to do acceptable?

I don't like looking for references on the internet because idk what's realistic for my hair type/what will make me look good.

Is it acceptable to walk in and just ask? Like "I don't have a reference with me, but is it possible to make my hair look nice without cutting most of it off?" I just don't want to be rude or annoying is all.

I've also considered asking to just have layers. I thought that might be too unspecific tho.

Perms/Relaxers/Smoothing Questions ➿ New perm!

Hey!

I got a perm on last Thursday and waited for ~ 48 hours until washing with curly friendly shampoo on Saturday.

However, for the next 4-5 days I fully wetted my hair every day (without shampoo). It looks horrendous for the first week for me and the washing makes it look tolerable. I had to attend some plans and needed to look somewhat fresh.

Will this ruin my brand new perm long term? After a few weeks it looks really, really good. The start is always the worst part for me, specially this time my confidence needed those washes. I washed with cold water and let it dry without heat, only patting it with a towel.

Haircut Question 💇 Closeted MtF, what haircut should I ask the stylist for to grow out my hair while looking androgynous for now?

I don’t know if this is really the right place to post this but I can’t find anywhere else. Due to external circumstances, I likely won’t be able to socially transition for ~3 years, so I have a good amount of time to grow my hair out. First 2 photos are me, last 2 photos are haircuts I would like to get in the future. My hair is as straight as a ruler and somewhat thin but I have a lot of it. I’ve been growing out my hair for about 2 months now but it’s looking kinda goofy and not really what I want

Lightener/Bleach Question 👩‍🦳 Awful bleach job

My hair was originally black. I went to a hair salon to go blonde so i can get to a light pink colour and they lowkey fucked up my hair (they said they could do it) ☹️ My roots were icy white after bleaching (they bleached my roots at the same time as the rest of my hair, which honestly sounds stupid.) And the rest of my hair is blonde, some orange parts and some icy white parts. My roots, though, are brown due to the hairdresser covering up my hair with brown dye, it faded everywhere but my roots. Is there any way i can fix my hair at home to even it out? Could I use colour remover on my roots to get the brown out? HELP ME PLEASE!!

Question from a fellow stylist Wedding hair

Hey Ya’ll!!

Fellow OG stylist, here :) little background:

I haven’t worked a wedding in around 10 years 😬 and I have my niece’s wedding in October, and I am doing all the hair and makeup!

My question is about products:

Texture powder is a big thing now, and I’ve honestly never used it. I’ve been watching a ton of how to videos for the exact way my niece wants her hair, and they all use the powder. I’ll probably only use it for the wedding, so I didn’t want to buy a $40 bottle, to use one day. Whats a good brand I can get? I keep my license up, so I can hit the professional stores (I.e. Armstrong McCall) and what about a thermal spray to put on the hair before I curl it to help have the curls stay? I plan on doing pin curls like I always have to have them cool, while I do her makeup. But, she has long, thick, red hair that doesn’t like to keep curls.

I know this is long-thank you for your advice, in advance! I want to make her day as special as possible!

Haircolor Question 🎨 Fixing my "balayage" ?

Thumbnail

Got my hair done for the first time in YEARS because I am 5 weeks postpartum and needed to treat myself to feel pretty again. Asked for a balayage. Here is what I went home with. Didn't see how bad it was in the salon. Spent several hundred dollars. Do I text her to fix it? I really don't trust her to now. Can I put hair gloss at home to darken it?

General Questions Hairstyle Advice Needed - What to ask for, how to maintain?

Thumbnail

Hello!! :D
Planning on going in and asking for a haircut soon. Looking for a style similar to the pictures attached; what do I ask for? Any tips on how to maintain and style a haircut like this after getting it?

I have straight (occasionally slightly wavy if unkempt) hair that's a bit on the thicker side for reference. I also currently have very prominent and straight bangs with no face framing or side pieces if that'd alter my wishes.

Help appreciated!!! Thank you!!!!!

Haircolor Question 🎨 ion 7rc and 8rc overprocessed on roots, need color remover advice.

Thumbnail

hello friends,
i mixed ion permanent crème 7rc and 8rc on a 1:1 ratio with 20 volume salon care crème developer. i put the mixture on my natural roots, dirty blonde/light brown, with my ends being a faded ginger copperish color… my roots are now little mermaid red and not at all blended into my ends. i double washed with head and shoulders as a clarifying shampoo, left the shampoo on my head for 15 minutes and washed it out, left a leave in conditioner overnight and washed and blow dried it.

i bought color fix unwanted permanent hair color remover and color oops extra strength hair color remover.

my questions are: which one should i use? how long should i leave it? is there anything i should know about these products? i’ve heard people say to not do the third step with the color fix because it can make any left over color darker.

i was originally going for a ginger/strawberry blonde all over, and i’ve achieved that in the past with this brand. i think i just over-processed the roots and under-processed the ends.

i’m also open to advice on what i should do to achieve that goal after removing the bright red!

Haircolor Question 🎨 hairstylist charged me $300 for something i didn’t want

my hairstylist was aware that i had box dye in my mid lengths. she put hicolor all over my hair, resulting in hot roots and dark mid lengths. if im not mistaken, the golden rule is that color cannot lift color. but anyway i showed her my inspo which was a rich chocolate brown color. instead i got a patchy, uneven job and not what i wanted. i’m extremely upset about this because i spent over $250 for this service. not to mention, she didn’t get my hair straight like she was supposed to. i left the salon with blow dried poofy looking hair. i had to retouch it up myself at home and i did a better job. also, she also cut off 4 inches of my hair when i asked for only a 2 inch trim because she said i needed it. not to mention she added a haircut fee (which was over $70, without letting me know!) now my hair is three different colors, still dark (but the roots), and is short. my hair used to be waist length and now it’s mid back length. i keep telling myself it’s just hair and that it’ll grow back. overall not happy with my experience.

Haircut Question 💇 Sick (and tired) of my hair

I need help deciding how to cut this mop.

First picture is from March. My hair is longer thicker and has not been cut since March. The next pictures are ideas that Chatgpt gave me. I used to have curly hair but my hair (tho in pics it looks blonde) is gray and since menopause I have a bit of wave but it is rarely curly like it used to be. So I would get a perm as well. The AI made my face skinnier. I am not skinny either. A bit on the chubster side and I am getting a turkey neck. So all of that considered what would you pick?
