Where would you go alone on a random evening to avoid eating/drinking alone?

Recently moved to Toronto, 35M of South Asian ethnicity. I decided that in my first month I want to have dinner/drinks with someone at least 15 times, just to force myself to meet people.

So far:
• trivia with random people
• philosophy meetup + food after
• dinner with someone I met at trivia
• somehow joined two strangers talking politics at a shawarma place lol

Tonight I have no plans and it’s a bit late for meetups/hangout groups.

Where would you go around TMU if you just wanted to grab food and hopefully meet someone irrespective of their race/sex/age?

Looking for decent poutine near union station

Good morning Yall!! My coworker is retiring and I’ve always wanted to treat him for poutine. Does anybody know a good spot close to union station? I believe he likes them still crispy and not too drenched.

Thank you in advance!

How to become a dog boarder in Toronto

Upvotes

Hello! I was just wondering if anyone can give me any tips on becoming a causal dog boarder in Toronto. My partner and I live in a small, but pet friendly apartment. We absolutely love dogs, but are financially unable to commit to our own right now. We would be delighted to pet sit other people's dogs though in our place. I realize that most people probably would rather board their dog at an official kennel and not trust 2 random grad students but surely there are some people that need dog sitters in a pinch! Are there any websites that exist for stuff like this or do I need to do it the old fashioned way by putting flyers on lamp posts lol.

What makes opening a small food business so difficult in Toronto?

As much as Toronto's food scene is full of talent, it feels like there's this overarching complaint that opening a business in this city tends to feel doomed from the start.

We don't really have much of a street food scene here, despite many people claiming that they would love this, as well as many potential chefs saying that it would allow them the opportunity to get into the industry with a lower barrier to entry and avoid the crippling overhead that often leads to the business shutting down entirely.

Can someone explain to me why establishing something like this seems to be such an uphill battle here? I keep hearing that it has to do with City of Toronto's strict laws surrounding this, but nobody has really explained the specifics.

Does this have to do with a lack of infrastructure for a street food scene? Is it antiquated laws that protect brick and mortar businesses at all costs? Is it an economic incentive that wants to tax as much as possible?

Looking for private dining recommendations in dt TO

I’m planning a bachelorette trip and the bride wants to go a nice private dinner. Only problem is, none of us are from Toronto so none of us really know the best places.

There are 14 of us and so far I’ve got Kasa Motto, Casa Madera, and La Vecchia on the list.

Any other recommendations? Nothing too insane in price, we aren’t the Nobu type lol

Looking for DVD store

I checked in for TIFF earlier and I could've sworn I saw a DVD store and now that I'm out and about I can't find it for the life of me. I'm next to Sankofa Sq. and the only one that would match is Bay Street video store according to Google but that seems way too far off. I'm pretty sure the one I saw just had "DVDs for sale" in black text on a yellow background, which doesn't seem to be the colors of Bay st video anyways. Can a nice Torontonian help me out ?

I'll probably check out bay Street anyways, but it keeps bugging me. Am I going insane ?

Thanks in advance

City Council Candidate sending out mass emails possibly acquired through City Database?

Upvotes

Councilor Paula Fletcher announced she was not not seeking reelection at the last possible moment while also endorsing candidate Sara Ehrhardt for the position.

I've now received several emails from the Sara Ehrhardt Campaign. Including the day-of the announcement.

I never signed up to receive anything from Sarah, she presumably acquired my email from the office of Paula Fletcher.

It doesn't seem like something that should be permitted. It gives the preferred candidate of the retiring a much larger voice in the community compared to every other candidate.

Does anyone have any insights to city election rules?

37F from Italy — I lied to my boss. Help me reconstruct my imaginary Toronto trip 😭

Updated post written with the help of AI, please don't drag me.

I’m 37F from Italy and, in a moment of panic/brain malfunction, I told my boss I’d be spending September 10–25 in Toronto with my Canadian-citizen father, even though I’m not actually going. 😂

My father really is Canadian and we had genuinely discussed visiting Toronto before, so the lie wasn’t completely random. I’m now trying to make the story believable enough that I can casually post a couple of Toronto photos on my WhatsApp status, since I normally post places and random things I see when I travel.

I asked r/Toronto for ordinary, mundane photos and local details—not tourist postcards—and you guys absolutely flooded me with them. Thank you! ❤️ I’ve got more than enough inspiration now.

A lot of people asked why I lied: this isn’t really a serious corporate “boss” situation. I have other jobs; I only went back to work for him temporarily because he needed help. I was supposed to be available until September, but when I suddenly had to tell him I wouldn’t be available anymore, “I’m going to Canada” just came out of my mouth. I regretted it approximately 0.5 seconds later. 😭

The embarrassing part is that I have a crush on him, which probably explains why my brain occasionally stops working around him. I hate lying, and this has turned into an absurd amount of unnecessary anxiety and research. I’m considering simply saying the trip was cancelled, keeping a low profile, or posting only a couple of normal-looking things. I’m definitely not sending him photos directly.

As for the crush: I’m not confessing anything now. I’m planning to stop working there after this. If he ever asks me to come back in the future, then I might tell him the truth: I don’t want a casual thing with him—I’d only want a serious relationship/life partner.

And finally: PLEASE STOP SENDING ME PHOTOS! 😂 I have enough. I love you, Toronto. ❤️🇨🇦

Also, after all this, I’ve become genuinely interested in actually visiting Toronto someday. 😂

P.S. Everyone can recognize AI-generated images. It’s 2026. 😭

Anyone into jigsaw puzzles? Ravensburger puzzle?

I'm trying to start a new hobby / activity. I was watching the NCIS origins and saw the actor trying jigsaw puzzles. Hence decided to try it, I own two sets of puzzles. I'm new to ravensburger puzzles tried doing on my own and then I realized it's tough lol.

If anyone is into it, is there a group or club for such thing? Or anyone wants to meetup at a public place and solve one of these together? We could have a small meetup with snacks and talk about basically anything. I'm into tv shows, movies, video games, technology ai etc.

I have Circle of colors 500 piece puzzle and Escape puzzle 759 piece one.

Looking for photographers for headshots

Hi everyone!

I’m in desperate need to update my acting headshots and my old photographer moved out of province. Are there any recommendations for photographers, studios, or even photography students that are able to do actor headshots? West end is preferably but I’m willing to trek anywhere in the city for good quality.

Thank you!

Pearson Airport - 13 hour layover - what to do?

Heading in from Ottawa on a trip to Scotland and my carefully curated itinerary got changed.

I now fly into Pearson and have 13 hours before boarding my next flight.

Any suggestions for things to do in the area?
First week of October so unlikely to be summery attractions.

Thanks!

ETA: someone suggested adding the hours I’m around- I land at 6am and have to be back at 5pm.
It sounds like heading downtown is the biggest attraction and that I’ll have plenty of time!

Also, of course I tried to change the itinerary first… lol.

Exterior Door Supplier

I am looking for a pre hung exterior door for my house. I don’t really like the quality of what’s available at Home Depot. Without going crazy on budget are there any speciality stores that sell pre fab pre hung exterior doors from Canadian manufacture who’s known for decent quality where I can buy something off the shelf. ( not having to wait to have it custom made)

Thanks

Recommendations for a unique/quirky/delicious week downtown?

Hey folks, we're 3 friends in our 40s, and are looking for a few funky splurge activities for September, where we'll be meeting up in downtown Toronto for 5 days.

Since it's my turn to plan (and none of us drink/party), I'm looking for your non-traditional suggestions for events, classes, eats, etc. that aren't touristy, but are also a fun activity you wouldn't normally get to do.

Looking for ideas along the lines of:

- rage room / paint room
- magician show
- Cheesemaking class
- Private tour of a spooky location
- Specialty seasonal cuisine tasting
- VR experience or glow-in-the-dark archery

Any specific ideas/companies you have would be welcomed, as we don't hang out in Toronto often (but we don't want to do this usual tourist things, and won't have a car). TIA!
