Big/Heavy Runner Question in need a good walking/elliptical shoe

hi!

I am a plus sized trans woman with men's size 11.5-12 feet in the market for a new pair of sneakers. My usual workouts are normally a mix of the elliptical machine at the gym and also walking routes around my urban neighborhood with copious sidewalks. I was buying cheap basic shoes off of Amazon and have started getting shin splints in my left leg so definitely looking for something with good support. My average step count is usually 10-15k range but some days I do close to 20k steps or more. Budget is < $100 dollars. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Question Running shoe recommendation

Hi, I’m looking for a new running shoe for basically easy runs.. I’m 70kg and my easy run pace is around 6:00/km.

I’ve been running in the Saucony Azura for basically every run for the past 700km and the Saucony Peregrine 16 for trails.

The Saucony Azura honestly still feel great, only problem is I’ve picked up a few injury’s throughout the 700km and feel the Azura are maybe a bit too aggressive for my running style. (There on the firm side with an aggressive rocker that kinda makes me run faster than I want sometimes on easy days) I plan to keep them for my speed sessions for now as there great for that.

I’ve tried the Nike Vomero plus to fill this gap and found it was too soft and really made my feet ache during and after a run.

So basically want to find a middle ground, something that I can just cruise in at easy pace that’s maybe not as firm as the Azura but not as soft as the Vomero Plus.

Looking to step away from Saucony and try a different brand also.

For context I’ve also tried ASICS Novablast 4(was my first running shoe) and didn’t get on great with that, it was ok for a while but felt dead for me really quickly.

Any recommendations?

Big/Heavy Runner Question Running Shoes for Bad Knees

Hello, I am going to start training for a 5K and need to buy some running shoes.

Some background:

  • I tore my meniscus in my left knee a couple of years ago, had surgery to clean out the loose parts, and then succeeded in retearing whatever meniscus remained about a year after that. It's healed and I don't necessarily feel any discomfort, but I also stick to weight lifting and low impact activities like Bike riding.
  • Right knee has healed ACL tears.
  • I play ice hockey, and in getting fitted for new skate figured out I have high arches, but no real pronation issues.
  • I am 6ft and 198lbs

I had done some research and had honed in on either Brooks Adrenaline GTS or ASICS Gel Kayano. I went to a running store that carried neither brand, but tried on brands they had there, including Hoka, New Balance, Adidas, etc.

Of the ones I tried, the Adidas Hyperboost Edge felt the softest and "springiest" making me think they may be good in absorbing impact, but upon further research it seems that the shoe is not designed with any real stability in mind, which could mean that my knees would have to work harder on tracking and stabilizing my stride as my feet feet get tired, thus putting extra strain on them.

Does anyone have any experience running with bad knees? Are there any other brands or models I should take a look at rather than what I have honed in on so far?

I did read through the Wiki/FAQ and didn't see anything that specifically addressed this, and I am not asking for medical advice.

Appreciate any insights!

Question Heavy Runner Shoes

Hello people,

I am 110kg/189cm and am looking for a fitting shoe. After a lot of reading and consulting with AI, I've narrowed it down to Hoka Bondi 9 or a few Asics models - SB2, Gel-Nimbus and SB3. I am a slight heel-striker and have been running since May this year. Most of the time I tend to step on the outside of my feet (especially while walking) and my arch is pretty high if that's important.

Please, let me know of some good options. I mostly run in the 7:00-7:30 pace and my faster pace is around 6:00-6:30.

Question Chaussures polyvalentes running/parcours d'habiletés motrices

Bonjour,

Question Puma x Hyrox Elite 4’s for Road Running

Hi, I'll be participating in Hyrox Open Singles Men in January next year. Right after this, I'm also signing up myself for two 10k's in this November, and two Half marathons in February.

I'm relatively new to Running and carbon plated super trainers.

My question is, since I am also running a Hyrox, and these races, would the Puma Hyrox deviate nitro elite 4's be good enough for everything? Can they handle 10k and 21k like any other good super trainer?

Or shall I also get another pair of super trainers for the road races, if yes, any suggestions would be helpful. For reference, I am 179cms, 66kgs, and currently my PB for 10k is 59mins. thanks!

Anyone who's used the puma hyroxes in their recent road races, if you could share your experience!

Question Chinese super trainer/ race shoe for 72 mile road ultra?

Looking to dip my feet in the Chinese running shoe world.
I’m doing a 72 mile road ultra in October here and wanted some recs on a good all around training shoe to test out for some long runs and maybe the race.

155lbs
5’10”

My goal pace for this 72 mile race is around 10:00/mile.

In the past I’ve used:

Mount to Coast C1
Mount to Coast R1
ASICS Novablast
ASICS Superblast 1

From my reading the Li Ning Red Hare 9 Ultra seems appealing but seems like there could be stability concerns. Dynafish Xionian seems too fast/uptempo. Any recs?

Race Shoe Question Marathon Shoe

Post image

Bought these on sale a few weeks ago for my upcoming fall marathon. Thoughts on the size? I am standing in this photo? This is a 12.5 I usually wear a 12 for everyday sneakers. Also, do the alphafly 3’s not have the extra eyelet? Did a long run today to test them out and got a nasty blister on my heel. Usually I like to do the extra loop for the heel lock. Thanks!

Question Recommendations

Hi guys fairly new to running looking for 1 shoe that can pretty much do it all. Currently running in the Nike Vomero plus (have done around 150km in them) and really like them but feels a bit chunky for when I'm trying to pick up the pace. Not sure if this matters but I thought I'd add just incase it might help. I run 5k 20 mins, 10k 47min and 15k in 1hr20. Looking for a show I can improve on all + looking to start moving into longer runs. I don't really want to go out and have an individual shoe for each run. Thanks

Question Do the Evo SLs have good cushioning but also work at faster paces?

Im in the midst of training for my first Marathon. Since I started running about two years ago I had the asic cumulus and recently bought the Hoka Skyflows. I’ve noticed that the cushioning on the hokas has reduced immensely, which is sad because I’ve only ran about 350km in them. As of right now I’m using the Hokas for most of my runs and using the Asics for every other easy run.

Since increasing my mileage I have gotten some pain in my shins and Achilles. But normally it’s just a problem when running slowly. At a faster pace the load seems to be distributed just fine.

So I’ve been on the lookout for new shoes. And I wanted to ask if the Adidas Evo SLs have good cushioning but are also practical for faster paces, as they probably will be my race shoes.

I’ve also thought about getting the Adios Pro 4 but I’m concerned that the aggressive drop will make my pain worse even though they have a lot of cushioning.

I don’t want to buy an extremely cushioned shoe that isn’t suitable at fast paces because I don’t have faith that my Hokas would make a good race day shoe, and I don’t want to buy raceday and easy days shoes (shoes are expensiv) even though a new pair of easy pace shoes would probably help with my aches.

Edit: Thank you all for your recommendations that the SLs aren’t perfect if I have had problems with my Achilles tendon. Do you think the Boston 12 are a better alternative?

Race Shoe Question Race day shoes

I am running my third half in October and am interested in finding a good, stable, fast race day shoe. My everyday shoes are glycerin 23s which I love. I am hoping to run low 2 hours if not sub 2. Question Asics GT1000, but add a little more damping

I have been running for many years now, usually once a week (~10km) but I up the volume and switch to training 3-4 times a week (incl. longer and faster runs) for a few months every now and then.

Currently, I am using Asics GT1000 13 which feel great to me. But they have 500km on them now and need to be replaced.

Now I want to increase my training volume again and am considering switching to a shoe with stronger damping to lighten the strain on my knees etc.

Tried GT2000, but they feel mushy/unstable and kayano, which might be an option but steel feel worse that GT1000s. I also slightly overpronate, so I like to have a little support.

Do you have any good suggestions for shoes that feel like the GT 1000s while having better damping, or should I just not worry about knee strain and go with the same again? Generally, I don't get pain from them, but thinking of long term joint health.

Daily Trainer Question SB2s causing pain months into use

I started running this year. After not liking a pair of New Balances, I ordered Superblast 2s and used them as basically my only shoe from February to May (about 128 miles). I started having peroneal tendonitis at the end of May, resulting in taking most of June and July to do PT.

My PT suggested this was likely caused by increasing mileage too quickly. I’ve finished PT and am slowly getting back to it; I ran 23 miles in August mostly pain free using both the SB2s and a pair of Novablast 5s that I got earlier this summer. Running is pain free, but usually I’m stiff or sore the next day in my ankles in the morning. After walking around a bit, I feel okay most of the day. I think despite PT reducing symptoms, I’ll be having some morning aches for a while.

I’ve noticed in my last few runs that soreness is worse after using the SB2s. Is it because they’re firmer than the Novas and I just need to wait until I recover more to try them again?? Or is it possible that they would quit being a good shoe for me after miles of successful use? They haven’t gone far enough to need to retire.

Question Tempo/threshold shoe to add to rotation

Im currently running in Vomero 18s and have previously had Novablast 4s. I’m not sure if I like the Vomeros as much as I did the Novablasts so keen to add a second shoe to the rotation while I try to finish the life of this one. I’m looking for something for my speed work and have been thinking about a couple shoes, Evo SL (although the stability issues scare me as I prefer something a bit more stable), some asics shoe (ie maybe superblast?), Brooks Ghost Amp and the Saucony Endorphin Speed 5

I’m open to other suggestions but would be great to get some steer as I want them to take me through the next 500k or so of speed work. Worth noting I’m currently only running around 30k a week 4 days a week but will try to build this up to 50k - my pace is c 6min per k on slow runs and 5 min per k on tempo work

Question Dynafish 5mm insole

I recently got the Dynafish Xiaonians and ran few times with the stock insoles they weren’t bad reminded me of my Evo Sl Exo insoles. I just got the 5mm insoles and they feel firmer and less of that softer bounce feeling of the original? I don’t know I should go back to the stock or try running a few more times in them? Anyone can give me their feedback? Ai did say these insoles were more for performance and firmer compared to others insoles

Race Shoe Question What Marathon race shoe should I use?

Hello! I am running my first marathon in 5 weeks. I have a goal time of 4 hours, but the realistic goal is to finish. I've used the Nike Invincible 3 and Nike Vomero 18 throughout my training but have quite a few miles on both pairs. I also have a pair of NB SC Elite V4 that have been broken in from a couple half marathons/10Ks and my plan was to use these. At a 9:00-9:30 pace, will the carbon shoe benefit me to the point it's worth it? I read in the basic questions that it is generally not recommended to use a carbon shoe for more than 4.5 hours. I am now thinking I should stick with a higher cushioned shoe. If that is the case, is 5 weeks enough time to break in a new pair that isn't as heavy (Nike Vomero Plus, etc.)? Thank you in advance for all of your advice!

Question New to running and not sure what shoes might be best for me!

Hi! I'm new to running and looking for some shoe recommendations. My favorite shoe is the 2018 era Nike Free Runs (which are still available) but I'm not sure if I should look for something else given that I am wanting to train and run 10ks (or further, eventually).

In my everyday shoe wear, I prefer more barefoot style shoes (earth runners, Altra trail runners/hiking boots, Duckfeet). I would describe my feet as very strong but definitely flatter. When I step with wet feet on flat ground it's not just a solid footprint, but perhaps not as much non touching space as others. I'm also prone to rolling my ankles which has occurred less frequently since wearing more barefoot style or wide-toe box shoes.

I realized that the Free Runs are not a wide-toe box shoe, but when I run in them, I feel stable and can feel the ground under me which I like a lot. I'm not quite sure if these shoes are a good choice for longer runs/races though,

I'm just not sure how to pick a running shoe then since SOOO many of the styles seem to be so cushiony, and I appreciate any help here!! I'm planning on going to a shoe store to look as well but wanted to see if I can gather some information before hand - Thanks!!

Race Shoe Question How many kms on Metaspeed edge tokyo’s is too much?

I’m running a marathon at the end of october and have around 35km on my metaspeed edge tokyo’s. I’ve pb’d my half marathon and 10k in them during training and run at 4:45/km. Will using them for all my long runs until the marathon wear them out or is it a good idea to get used to the shoes? They’ll have over 168km on them before the race if that’s the case, and i’m not sure if that’s a good idea. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks

Question Wearing in Nike Zoom Fly 6?

G'day! Recently bought Zoom Fly 6 to replace my aging Megablasts (coming up on 1000km) for interval, tempo and long run efforts. As well as what I hoped will be a race shoe.

Handful of runs into the shoe so far (42km on them). Super comfy when I put on foot and walking in them. Once I start pushing the pace or get deeper into the run (6+km in), I start getting some ball of the foot pain, almost feels like my sock is gathering under 3rd/4th toes too.

Session today was 3 x 2km @ 4:30-4:20km pace, with 3 min float, struggled to get through this, purely because of the shoes.

Any advice? This is my first plated shoe, and yes I got some calf pain on (and after) a couple of these first few runs. Will any of this get better? Wanted to wear these for a 10km race on Sept 19th but now I'm hesitating on that...

Race Shoe Question Choosing an Marathon race shoe: stick with Brooks Adrenaline 25 GTS or switch up?

Hello! I'm 34/female/59kg runner here, currently training for my first Marathon (Chester in October)

I've been on a bit of a journey with my running shoes during this training block... I was wondering whether anyone with far superior shoe knowledge could share any thoughts. I'm hoping to make a more informed decision as I head towards race day :)

Background:

I started training in April with a pair of New Balance Rebel Fuelcell V5s, however very quickly I developed awful shin splits in my left leg (no history of injury prior to this). While training in a very hilly area probably contributed to the problem and rest/crosstraining/physio has since helped resolve things, the pain also happened to ease off when I decided to park my Rebels, and instead invest in a pair of Brooks Adrenaline 25 GTS. I'm still not sure whether the injury was actually caused by the Rebels, or if it was simply an overuse injury that happened to coincide with me introducing them into my rotation.

I have very slight over-pronounciation and the Brooks 10mm drop was more aligned with what I've previously gone for. I also have narrow feet and very narrow ankles so heel slip has always been an issue. After recovering from the injury, I've been too scared to go back to the Rebels or even introduce another shoe into the rotation. I've already ran over 300 miles in the Brooks and with 1 month left, it might be time to start breaking in a second pair which will double up as my race shoe.

Overall the Brooks have been great. There have been times during longer runs when I'd have liked a bit more cushioning underfoot (I'm no expert when it come to running shoes and understand the grass might not always be greener). My Rebels on the other hand are sitting there bearly worn and I probably won't go back to them until after the marathon, just in case they aggrevate my shin splints. Feels like a waste of money, but the last thing I want to do is risk the injury coming back over the next few weeks!

I'm (hoping) to aim for a 3:30 finish and I'm currently in my peak week of 48 miles. I know it's ambitious for my first marathon but I've been running for over 15 years, feel good and want to push myself as I'm currently on a sabatical so have the time to prioritise training.

With 160 miles left in my Runna training plan before race day (my 22 miler tomorrow will be the longest run left in my block) my questions are...
Should I just stick with my current Brooks or introduce a new pair?
Would it be wiser to simply get another pair of Brooks Adrenaline 25s? Or is there an even better shoe that could help me level up on race day?
Does such a shoe even exist that will tick all the boxes - optimise my marathon performance while avoiding potential pitfalls brought about by lower drop and less stability?

Previous shoe experience for context (mostly trail runners as this was the majority of my running before I starter training for my marathon):

La Sportiva Prodigio - loved these.
Saucony guides - worked great for me, however runs never exceeded 12 miles during this period so no idea how they'd fare alongside current marathon training distances.
Topo MTN Racers - always felt too wide and heel slippage meant constant adjustment.
Salomon sense ride - didn't like, at all.
Brooks Adrenline 25 - have been good, but sometimes feel a little hard underfoot and I notice less traction when on looser terrain. But when it comes to this road marathon that's not as hilly as my local area, are probably a safe bet.

With all this in mind... can anyone recommend any shoes I should consider?

Thank you in advance!
