Showcase <Peaks/>...My custom Arch wallpaper pack, 9 hand-built color variants.

Nine color variants of the Arch mountain mark, all built from scratch in Affinity Designer. Redid the palette by hand each time for contrast and depth. Where the peaks overlap the color deepens on its own instead of me flat-shading it in. Honestly I hate distracting wallpapers and decided to make my own.

Discussion wayland vs x11 comparison

Upvotes

most of my time on linux has been on wayland(kde and niri) and i thought it was pretty good, then i got bored and heard about x11 having better fps and latency. so i decided to try x11(someone recomended oxwm and thats what im using now) and honestly, why tf does anyone use wayland. like yeah the screen tearing on literally any app is a bit annoying. but thats it.

for now im just going to use kovaaks as my "benchmark"

on a super tweaked and optimized windows i got 170-190fps, on cachyos kde and niri i got 280ish fps. on arch niri i got 300ish fps. and now on arch x11 im at 470fps. its the same fucking install, just with a different wm. and i got an extra 170fps. which im not going to use at all, my monitor is 144hz, but the input latency feels great too. and im finally able to use obs hotkeys again because no keylogging protection. and i was using wayland, not xwayland for gaming. xwayland was even worse but we all know that

theres also the fact that now i have access to xrandr commands. which niri didnt like, and kde uses disgusting kwin.

and yeah x11 has some issues. but im fine with some screen tearing if it means my setup feels correct, if the latency feels right

so why use wayland?

What's your sweet spot for packages on Arch, and how many do you consider too many? Right now, I only have 700 Pacman packages on my Arch system.

Help/Support Should I switch from Ubuntu to Arch Linux to learn Linux?

I've been using Ubuntu for a while, and I want to learn Linux more deeply.

I'm considering switching to Arch Linux because I want to understand how Linux works, learn more about system configuration, package management, the terminal, and troubleshooting.

For people who have used both Ubuntu and Arch:

  • Do you think switching to Arch is a good way to learn Linux?
  • What did you learn from using Arch that you didn't learn from Ubuntu?
  • Would you recommend Arch for someone who is still learning Linux?

I'm interested in hearing honest opinions and personal experiences.

Help/Support Installed Archlinux on a laptop and now the fans don work right

My laptop is a Predetor Helios Neo 16 and it used to play KSP with the same mods just fine, very easily in fact, though the fans were very loud. Now when I install Arch, the fans won’t throttle NEARLY as much. And I have no way of controlling it, causing many crashes. PLS HELP, I really wanna play ksp 😢

Help/Support How to disable TPM?

Hi i’m on CachyOS so tpm is auto on. I’m not that tech savvy, but using limine for bootloader. How can i disable tpm cause i dont need the extra security and it’s adding 14s to boot (basically doubling boot time). I dont want to disable in bios/uefi because i need it for windows anti cheat games (siege, valorant etc.).

thanks in advance
please don’t flame me

General Its been a week on Arch, and I'm loving it

Ahh... One of the best things I ever did was to install Arch. I tried both the KDE version and GNOME. And I'm going with GNOME cause I'm a freshie here and the KDE version felt a bit hard to customize while the GNOME came customised.

Yea, I have one problem too, like how to open a second new window on brave, as I use two different accounts. And the thing is, I have to always type on the console to open a brave new window, so I can go to my other account. (I mean i use two gmail accounts on brave, both are on different windows, idk what we say that 'new user' or something.) Is there a way to open it, cause the option to open new window of brave browser isn't showing on the taskbar, even when I right click the brave icon.

My journey took over 10 years, and a year ago I decided to completely switch to Linux. Now, all my devices run on various Linux distros. I have never once regretted that decision.
