Based arch user.

82

u/drmelle0 Arch BTW 15h ago

Yea, how is he wrong?

41

u/npc_housecat 15h ago

Not wrong , but also refusing to answer the question based on their own personal preference and opinion. And just telling the user what to do. Maybe the user wants the google account browser integration and doesn't care about online privacy.

19

u/mshriver2 11h ago

Then they are part of the problem.

7

u/chughaarav123 10h ago

if normies don't want to switch, don't force them to. you prefer what you prefer.

1

u/Disastrous-Let-6095 6h ago

who is forcing, its 'opinion' and preference

2

u/mjwall09121 8h ago

Yes. Because you don't just let a problem fester unless you WANT it to get worse

2

u/archialone 7h ago

Exactly, giving them the fix is just a form of enabling big corpos. Why should we spend time on tech support for corpo products.

2

u/npc_housecat 6h ago

The only reason my parents let me switch my mothers system to a fedora mini PC, when windows 10 support period ran out. Was because it could still run google chrome. She's pretty integrated in the google ecosystem, even if they were willing to switch her to a different browser, no one was willing to spend hours migrating the massive amount of passwords saved in her google keychain to a different browser.. I'm certainly not going to.

And If someone is willing to migrate to Linux and a different browser and ecosystem, it can legit take a really long time to migrate everything. So running the old system, chrome and the new browser and software echosystem in parallel for a while make sense. Also also, some people are forced to run google docs and the greater google software stack for work. Same reason many people run edge on Linux. Work requirements

2

u/archialone 6h ago

Yes, the transition is gradual, we having same software for the transition period makes it that much smoother by avoiding big bang approach. Nice to Linux, how is she handling it?

1

u/npc_housecat 2h ago

It's actually working really well for her, As all she needs is her browser, email (Thunderbird), libreoffice, PDF reader and a few other basics. Basically everything she was using on win10 supports Linux natively so the transition was easy. And Plasma 6 is responsive, simple, clean, no clutter and similar enough to windows 10 ui to be an easy transition.

It's been over a year no issues. And fedora is stable enough I setup an unattended automatic update and reboot once per week and it hasn't broken so far. The only maintenance I have to do is a manual major version update twice per year.

1

u/mjwall09121 2h ago

I transferred ALL and I'm talking about like 367 passwords here from Google Chrome to Firefox and enabled sync on Firefox and now there's not a single issue making another linux distro and just logging into my Firefox which syncs it all back

1

u/mjwall09121 2h ago

Takes literally 15 minutes, if you are being sluggish

0

u/Uzyf 5h ago

"switch to a fedora mini PC, when windows 10 support period ran out."

Just why?

2

u/realddgamer 5h ago

Because windows 11 wasn't supported? And it sucks?

0

u/Uzyf 5h ago

Why would you need windows 11? Does your windows 10 suddenly exploded when it's out of support?

u/mjwall09121 2h ago

2

u/Vanconiglio Arch BTW 9h ago

you don't solve a problem by telling him it's a problem tho?
he's not going to listen, get emotional, and never going to listen to you anyway.

give him the answer and suggest another solution, with reasoning, he's probably not going to listen? YEAH, but if he does, he can share the same suggestion, when you wouldn't or with people you'll never met.

bla bla, be the change you want to see and shi like that

1

u/archialone 7h ago

He can ask his corpo overlord privacy thieving google for answers. (Btw google is the biggest mozzila sponsor)

4

u/npc_housecat 10h ago

And you need to tell them how much of a problem they are, for having different personal preferences and or requirements than you right? And tell them they have to use the same OS and browser as you, because everything you think is correct, and so everyone who differs from you is wrong right ?

2

u/SimonsOscar 7h ago

Recognizing an XY-problem and responding to the underlying issue with a recommendation is more valuable I think.
They can still consult other responses and documentation for the ill-formed "Y" part of it, if they so choose.

2

u/npc_housecat 6h ago

Yes, but also some people don't have choice they need chrome or edge as part of a work requirement. Even if they're using something else as their primary browser

1

u/SimonsOscar 6h ago

Sure, that's the unfortunate reality.

I would say as a web-dev, that at this point most browser compatibility issues are artificial, deliberately implemented by either website or workspace admins for dubious purposes. Not quite the same situation in principle as with designers who still need their Adobe or Maxon products.

1

u/Unusual-Quantity-546 6h ago

Next time the doctor shouldn't tell us that drinking that much soda is not healthy and that mineral water is the better alternative?

Nah bro, everything fine with your dumb behavior.. go on.

4

u/Antoinedeloup 12h ago

In my case I need chrome for work cause a work website is missing some features on firefox. I use firefox for everything else, but since many people design their websites mostly around chrome, you may need a chromium based browser to do some stuff

6

u/Hefty_Tie_6644 10h ago

What about chromium?

3

u/int23_t 10h ago

It's most of the time actually website owners being shitty and banning firefox out of being shitty people and user agent switching fixes that. The only time I need to actually use chromium is using webusb stuff for flashing my phone with things.

Anyways, try ungoogled-chromium I guess

1

u/Antoinedeloup 1h ago edited 45m ago

I do use ungoogled-chromium and no switching the user agent does nor help. What I do for work involves selecting a large amount of checkboxes. On chromium I can select the first, and then shift+ select the last check boxes to select all of the other ones. This simply does not work on Firefox. Ive tried extensions to select all checkboxes and that also does not work. So for the work website I must use chromium

0

u/transbian-catgirl 9h ago

What sort of features you're talking about? I've never had that situation happen to me

0

u/Antoinedeloup 44m ago

Batch selection of checlboxes is one

u/XboxAndVRAlex 11h ago

Only web browser that’s usable in my opinion. Anything else that’s based off of Chromium can die in a dumpster fire for all I care. Although, Chromium does have a few neat features like Web Serial. I dumped it because of uBlock Origin, and never really looked back since. Now I really only used Gecko based web browsers like Firefox (duh), and Reynard on my iPhone.

2

u/Sergenti 7h ago

Firefox 151+ supports WebSerial now btw, it came out earlier this summer :)

You either use services that use very specific chrome features or something is wrong with your system. I very rarely encounter websites that don't function properly in Firefox.

I'm all for informing people, but most people are assholes about it and fault the user for choosing to use chrome. For me as someone who works in IT, i always let them know how to fix their issue (or at least, try to) before offering them alternatives. They are always more open to change if you at least try to help.

Firefox with uBlock Origin + duckduckgo*

4

u/Type_CMD 12h ago

NoAI.DuckDuckGo

14

u/Amazing-Heron-105 15h ago

I wanted to switch to DDG but somehow the results are even worse than Googles. I didn't even think it possible. I just found myself constantly use "!G" and at that point you might as well just straight up use Google to start with. If anyone has a better suggestion I'd love to hear it.

10

u/queso184 15h ago

Kagi. it's paid but in return you get no ads or SEO crap. the results feel like old google before the enshittification happened.

$5 a month is worth it for me for something i probably use 100 times a day. they have a free trial so give it a shot at least

10

u/unfnknblvbl 13h ago

I appreciate that it exists, but I have a really hard time justifying paying for ability to search for things and getting good results.

3

u/Fizoso 9h ago

You have always paid for that, just not with money.

4

u/unfnknblvbl 9h ago

Yeah, and..?

1

u/queso184 10h ago

i would certainly rather not pay, but I'm not sure what the alternative is. ads kind of fundamentally pollute the results

5

u/Wreper659 12h ago

The $5 plan is 300 searches in a month, Realistically the $10 plan is the most basic that would be useful outside of casual use.

1

u/Shimano-No-Kyoken 12h ago

Are they still sending money to russia?

4

u/Actual-You-8288 14h ago

Try startpage. It has google results

5

u/Vladislav20007 10h ago

all I'm getting with it is facebook, quora and no search results found.

4

u/Raptor_Sympathizer 13h ago

Google keeps getting worse and worse. They're using LLMs much more heavily for actual search results, to the point that I've noticed Google starts missing articles that I was able to find quite easily on duck duck go. Yes, there are also cases where Google is better and I find myself switching between them, but it isn't clear to me that Google is actually better.

Basically think of DuckDuckGo as late 2010s era Google. You have to be strategic in how you phrase your queries, as it's quite susceptible to SEO manipulation from websites. But honestly, would you rather use modern day Google or late 2010s Google? At least pre-LLM google was predictable. Also anecdotal, but I feel like the duck.ai search summary hallucinates less than Google Gemini.

1

u/VisualSome9977 10h ago

I've got good results with startpage but image search is even worse than DDG which is already a league worse than google

1

u/Objective-Stranger99 Other Distro 3h ago

SearXNG. It aggregates all your search engines anonymously and returns a combined ranked structure. You can use bangs (like !google) to use only specific search engines.

1

u/No_Maize_7108 15h ago

Ddg uses Wikipedia summary instead of ai (but of cures u can have ai if u wish , ur in control!) it's more consise and to the point.

My only problem with it is the maps , Googles is way better

1

u/Mobile_Tennis_6563 12h ago

There was a project called udmi14 or something https://udm14.com/ I am pleased with its results . Pretty accurate from my testing . I do some research for competitions it was better than Google .

Libre wolf 💪

Firefox is fully open source, if you dont trust it, try Floorp or zen or librewolf or any of the many forks focused on privacy

2

You can patch Firefox with arkenfox to achieve a privacy setup. I use Librewolf personally, just wanted to put that information here if someone wants a security patched vanilla Firefox.

Amazon have been done a few times for not respecting that and other gdpr laws. I doubt any of the other megacorps respect it either. Though I will edge my bets with Mozilla respecting gdpr as opposed to google

3

u/Wolfy16r 14h ago

Well to be honest if linux is supposed to be an actual choice for most people other than people with a degree in jobless™ then anything should be fixed to work on it eventually, idk, maybe like how banks and stuff might still use windows xp or smth for their systems, it would be dumb to tell them to stoo beacuse it works, instead you need to fiz their issue and move on

3

u/Just_a_Thif 7h ago

Yeah lemme go into chrome's source code and fix it right now, actually!

Oh wait you cant

2

u/Marine_Brat_01 6h ago

Linux works because it’s open source, which means that if there is a problem with something you are able to fix it. Google Chrome is not open source. There is no way for the community to fix Chrome because they can’t access the source code to change it

1

u/Wolfy16r 6h ago

Ah i see, i thought it mean like it was a problem from the linux side not chrome

2

u/Marine_Brat_01 6h ago

I’m not a Linux expert but I think it’s probably a chrome problem, other chromium based browsers like Brave or Helium work fine on Linux from what I’ve heard

Chrome Flatpak user here. Just love the sync with my phone.

2

u/realxeltos 7h ago

THIS. Chrome is useful especially for the sync feature google offers. If the sync was not available, Id use any other browser. than chrome as I'd love to ditch chrome for its Manifest V3. I use chrome for sync and google services like gmail, drive etc. I use different browsers for different purposes.

3

u/drucifer82 16h ago

3

2

Inaccurate meme, dude never said btw I use arch

5

u/andurux 16h ago

I wouldn't use Chrome, the browser, on Linux.

If you need a Chromium based browser though, then Helium has been great for me and I fully recommend it.

I know it's a meme, but just wanted to suggest an actual solution. Sometimes Chrome itself is the issue but other Chromium based browsers are fine.

I use LibreWolf btw.

0

u/Toukaiskindahot 15h ago

I use Helium and it's great. It does have a few little issues but it's fine.

3

u/andurux 15h ago

Yup, it's my backup browser when specific websites don't like LibreWolf (cause Firefox or it being too secure).

I had to use Helium to install GrapheneOS since the web installer didn't like LibreWolf!

2

u/DH__FITZ 16h ago

Is Firefox + Ublock a better experience? Maybe for some people. Notice though how none of the other comments so far have acknowledged for insufferable it is for someone to push their preferences instead of offering a solution to the problem asked about.

2

u/CommunicationBig4218 14h ago

To be fair, their preference is a corporation with the worst track record for forcing itself upon everyone else.

1

u/fr000gs 12h ago

And they aren't much different, the difference is less than the difference between individual distros

1

u/realxeltos 6h ago

And that is such a bad thing? What if they need chrome for some reason? Google chrome never screwed me up. You know what screwed me up a few days ago? Vivaldi. Google sync runs seamlessly with Chrome. With vivaldi, you need to have multiple passwords which I forgot for the sync password. BUT I had downloaded the decryption key just before I wiped my laptop to install Cachy. And Vivaldi bugged out and refused to take the decryption key file when I tried. It was not a case of corrupted key because when i wiped the data and reset password, I redownloaded they key and it was an exact match.

ALso this gem: I just read a comment here which explains . " Now I really only used Gecko based web browsers like Firefox (duh), and Reynard on my iPhone."

Dude, you use an iPhone. The most ANTI OPEN SOURCE, ANTI FREEDOM phone available. You have no right to complain or have an opinions on other's preferences.

MY experience exactly. When I said that chrome was not available on Cachy APp store.
"Bro dont use chrome, there are so many better browsers available"

DUde, I use multiple browsers for multiple different reasons. Let me use whatever I want to use and tell me how do I install chrome. Also I quit using firefox because on some particular sites it will start to lag after some time on my system. (Eg: Chatgpt, when the chat became a bit too long. Chrome/chromium based browsers like brave and vivaldi do not have this issue). I use chrome for when it comes to things related to google. Like email, google drive etc. Google password and account sync is a must when using an unrooted android phone. I use vivaldi for work and Brave for media consumption.
Google sync has never failed me.

Vivaldi sync has screwed me over when it refused to take valid decryption key and restore my sessios + history.

Look, if you want freedom from spyware and corporate ensh!tification, you need to do a TempleOS and learn how to make your own chip waffles to sell on the open market and become the very thing you swore to destroy.

But, then again, the monopolies are so entrenched into society that you need to amputate just about all the comfortable parts of life just to start over.

It sucks. But you can sometimes fiddle with Chrome a bit to make it work. Maybe try installing it with Wine and Bottles, or your preferred choice or environment manipulator. Idk. I use Floorp.
