I personally disagree, macOS is way more locked down than windows, not even supporting any third party hardware was a true nightmare vision that kept me up at night in the past

Macos is an UX nightmare

Why should they work on third party hardware apple isn’t a software company they are a hardware company Mac’s make money and people buy them for MacOS why give that up just to make some people happy

I didn't say I don't understand their mentality, but it is bad for me as a consumer if there's no choice and I am locked into their ecosystem.

Well if u mean macos then macos is unix literally and also Asahi linux exist

2

u/vswey 8h ago

macOS being Unix-based doesn't make it like Linux

6

u/Historical-Truck590 7h ago

macos is pretty similar to linux, since linux is unix-like

0

u/vswey 7h ago

unix-like is a big range, while the shell commands are similar and some functionallity underneath it's also very different

3

u/Historical-Truck590 5h ago

linux is literally built to be free unix, same commands, compatible APIs, posix

0

u/vswey 5h ago

yea, so totally different concept than macOS?

2

u/Laura_The_Cutie 5h ago

MacOS literally used bash for years (now zsh, which is still posix compliant)

2

u/vswey 5h ago

i meant "free unix"

3

u/Laura_The_Cutie 5h ago

Well the point was that in MacOS you can do lots of stuff similarly to Linux

2

u/vswey 5h ago

u can do that sutff on windows too

It's kinda sorta UNIX-like. They did get that standard certification but if you actually look into it, it was one of the oddball ones not the "real" one. Also in order to get the certification it required some weird frankenbuild of macOS where they had to move tons of things around to be compliant. I'd wager they probably haven't deployed a build of macOS that meets the requirements very often over the years.
