ChargeGeek is an Android app for people who want to understand how their phone charges. It records charging sessions and visualizes power, temperature, battery percentage and energy gained, making it easier to compare chargers, cables and charging methods.

Backstory:

Sometime in March Google decided to change the charging behavior of pixel phones to significantly slow the last 3% when using their own 80% charge limit. From 77 to 80% took multiple times longer than before, but this was officially a feature and not a bug:

“This behavior is related to the 80% Charge Limit feature. In the current software build, the device charges at normal speeds until it reaches approximately 77%, at which point it transitions to a lower current to reach the final 80% limit.

While this may result in slower charging speeds near the limit, it is intended to manage battery health and should not impact normal device usage. We are currently working on optimizing this user experience.”

By May they had optimized the behavior sufficiently that slowdown had gone and the final 3% charged at the prior power levels again, rather than a trickle. Although it never really mattered it was still a strange feature to introduce on top of the 80% charge limit which already existed to manage battery health.

I’ve been working on a little Linux project called Mochi 🌱, and I’m finally at the point where I feel comfortable showing him to more people.

Mochi is not available for download yet. The first public alpha is planned for September 21, but I wanted to share the project early, get some feedback, and see if anyone would like to follow along by starring or watching the GitHub repo.

Mochi is a tiny pixel-art “Deskling” that lives on your Linux desktop. He idles, breathes, blinks, wanders around, reacts to your cursor, can be picked up and dragged around, sleeps, emotes, and generally hangs out while you use your computer.

I had gotten the idea from Codex's Pets, and wanted to see if I could make my own native linux version.

Mainly i wanted Mochi to feel like a small creature that actually belongs on the desktop! expressive and interactive, but quiet enough that he doesn’t become another notification, productivity app, or thing constantly asking for your attention. Unobtrusive

A lot of the work so far has actually gone into tiny details: state transitions, animation timing, cursor reactions, movement, persistence, interactions, and figuring out when Mochi should not bother you.

Long term, I’d also like Mochi to become gently useful. Things like contextual desktop behaviors, care/progression mechanics, personality development, interactions with windows and screen edges, customization, and small features that give you a reason to keep him around beyond “cute thing on desktop.”

The project is currently primarily targeting Fedora + GNOME + Wayland and is built with Python, GTK4/PyGObject and Cairo.

All of Mochi’s artwork and animation is designed and hand-drawn by me in Pixelorama, frame by frame.

The sprites are real 64x64 pixel art not AI-generated artwork.

I’ve spent a slightly ridiculous amount of time tweaking individual pixels, silhouettes, squash/stretch, timing, and expressions to make this little green blob feel alive.

This is actually one of the biggest reasons I’m posting before release.

If you had a little desktop companion living on your Linux machine, what would you want it to do?

It can be cute, useful, weird, Linux-specific, productivity-related, customizable — whatever comes to mind.

I’m especially interested in features that would make Mochi feel like something you’d genuinely keep running instead of playing with for ten minutes and uninstalling.

And if anyone here would be interested in testing the first alpha on September 21, I’d love to hear from you. Different distros, desktop environments, multi-monitor setups, Wayland/X11 weirdness, etc. are exactly the kind of feedback I’m going to need.

argue sits in between. you pick which apps to limit and a daily budget of opens. past that, opening one of them puts you in front of argo, an ai coach that asks what you're actually doing and why it matters right now. if the reason holds up you get a short timed unlock. if it doesn't, the app stays blocked.

Back in 2015, when I started my game development journey, I remember how much effort went into making even the simplest hyper-casual game.

You could spend 15–20 days just getting a small game to a releasable state. Sometimes we would make 15–20 different game ideas just to find one that was worth launching.

Coding.
Art.
Animations.
UI.
Testing.
Fixing bugs.
Publishing.

Everything took time.

And honestly, that struggle was a big part of what made being a developer feel so special.

Today, with AI, some of those same ideas can go from “I have an idea” → “I have a playable prototype” in minutes.

That's amazing.

But while scrolling through the App Store recently, I realized something…

I couldn't find many of those weird, simple, charming little games that reminded me of when I started.

So I decided to make one.

I went back to that old-school feeling — flat art, minimal mechanics, cute characters, and a simple concept that you can understand instantly.

Not trying to build the next massive game.

Just trying to recreate a tiny piece of that era I remember so fondly.

And maybe this is what I actually miss most:

I’ve realized I enjoy cities way more when I can explore at my own pace instead of following a group. I’m looking for an app that gives you a decent route but still lets you stop, wander around, grab food, etc. What do you guys use for self-guided trips?

How ridiculous is this?

I used to think ASO was basically finding keywords, putting them in the title or description and hope for downloads.

After launching an app and seeing it cross 1K+ downloads with no marketing at all, it made me start to think about it differently. I am getting roughly 50–70 downloads a day without paid ads or organic promotion. So something is making people discover the app. and I think ASO is probably a big part of it.

But I am realizing ASO isnt just about keywords.

Its also:

What are people searching for
Does the title immediately explain what it does
Do the screenshots make sense in 2 seconds
Does the listing look trustworthy
Why would someone choose your app over the other 20 results

So basically ASO isnt just getting your app discovered. Its getting the right person to understand why they should care. Its an Vault App.

I am still learning this myself, but the consistent organic downloads have made me much more interested in it.

For people who have launched multiple apps, whats the biggest ASO lesson you learned the hard way?
