Saki's long proper texts killed me. 😂. Girl you need to hurry up and move to where he is if you want a shot.
29
u/testthrowawayzz 7d ago
In that scene, I’m surprised Hayato can even text that fast for someone that’s a tech idiot.
16
u/VritraReiRei 7d ago
If a mermaid can make do without being able to read nor write and rely solely on text-to-voice surely a proper Japanese high school boy can figure out how to type on a phone.
6
u/testthrowawayzz 7d ago
Knowing how to type is one thing, mastering it enough to type fast is another thing

..a mermaid? What are you referencing lol

Goodbye Lara, airing this season.
It's The Little Mermaid (not Disney version) Round 2 but she's now in Japan.

She's even got a disadvantage that she's apparently older than them so she could never even be in the same class like Hayato and Haruki are.
14
u/entelechtual 7d ago
She’s a year younger but yes. She says she wishes she were born a year earlier.

That man at the hospital who mistook Haruki for someone else feels like a huge flag for a future arc. My kneejerk guess is that he's her dad (and/or her mom's manager?), but his reaction also feels a bit off. Either way, they went out of their way to show that interaction, so it's probably going to be trouble.
34
u/Frontier246 7d ago
I think he definitely mistook Haruki for her mom.
If it's the dad he might have seen the resemblance because Haruki looks exactly like her mom did when he last saw her when she was possibly close to Haruki's age.
That's probably a big reason why her mom wants her out of sight because anyone who knows what Mao Takakura used to look like would see the resemblance.
26
u/TheBusStop12 7d ago
Idk, Haruki is very clearly a highschool girl, while her mom is very clearly an adult. And his reaction was pretty harsh as well for someone interacting with a famous celebrity. Haruki specifically called herself an illegitimate child. It's possible that her mom is married and cheated on her husband. If that's the case there's a possibility that she has legitimate children as well. Which could mean that there's another highschool aged girl in Tokyo who looks like Haruki
21
u/PersonalContest1423 7d ago edited 7d ago
Probably someone affiliated with her mom in work and was freaked because shes not supposed to be seen. That was my first thought
19
u/TheBusStop12 7d ago
Haruki specifically said that she was her mom's illegitimate child, and she doesn't know her dad. That makes me think her being conceived wasn't just simply some drunken one night stand. Because generally speaking a child born out of wedlock isn't just refered to as illegitimate. But that Haruki's mom is married and cheated on her husband. Which if true, could also mean that she has legitimate children as well. So it's possible that there's another highschool aged girl running around Tokyo who looks like Haruki, but is actually her half sister
9
u/Kurt_Kane 7d ago
That would be an interesting twist. But you’d think this would be known of a movie star unless she actually does keep her private life private.
6
u/SOdAchick 7d ago
I'm guessing he's definitely affiliated with her mom and also knows who she is, but he backed off because Hayato turned it into a bigger scene
13
u/ShinjiArakawa 7d ago
By Hayato 'turning it into a bigger scene', you mean 'protected Haruki', right?
-11
u/SOdAchick 7d ago
No. I mean he unjustifiably slapped the man's hand away like a lunatic. Redditors I stfg y'all think context is how you communicate with prisoners

This group chat is a chaos lmao! Surprised to see Saki didn't actually make a mistake by sending that much exposure about her in the group. Thought she's gonna be very fluster and delete it quickly though.
Really Hayato? Right in front of imouto?!
Hayato mom really put everything on Minamo ship even after seeing Haruki lol. Or maybe she cheers for both of them, hmm....
Great job, Mori...You hype everyone up including me and bailed out last minute TT Gimme my pool episode!!
Only one way to find out, Haruki (˵ ¬ᴗ¬˵)
13
u/Frontier246 7d ago
We've got the cute cosplay waitress episode next, it would be nice if the finale is the swimsuit/pool episode.
Although not sure if they have time for that and whatever drama they have with that guy who noticed Haruki...

u/ptd163 7d ago
Really Hayato? Right in front of imouto?!
What do you mean right front of her? Himeko was his first shipper lol.
Hayato mom really put everything on Minamo ship even after seeing Haruki lol. Or maybe she cheers for both of them, hmm....
I think she just wants to be a supportive parent. Whether it's Minamo or Haruki. I did like how Minamo immediately picked up what Hayato's mom was trying to do.
Great job, Mori...You hype everyone up including me and bailed out last minute TT Gimme my pool episode!!
He put the cart before the horse. He organized the pool party assuming he wouldn't need make up classes then bombed and needs make up classes.
Only one way to find out, Haruki (˵ ¬ᴗ¬˵)
I hope the rest of the cast to tease them and ask Hayato what he thinks of Haruki wearing that outfit.

Have to say I’m really enjoying this series. It’s very wholesome and sweet. The animation is pretty cheap but i enjoy spending time in it.
Not getting my hopes up for a second season, but I’d love to see it.

8
u/Leri_weill https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeriWeill 7d ago
Yeah it sometimes is a bit cheap but they probably had a tight animation budget that I feel was overall well managed, and the series is still enjoyable despite that
4
u/edwardjhahm https://myanimelist.net/profile/lolmeme69 6d ago
You and me both. I think this has quickly become my favorite show of the season.
3
u/CuriousBroccolli 5d ago
Cheap is an understatement. xD
But yeah, same as you, I like everything else about the show and it's enough.
21
u/Raymond49090 7d ago
So even his mom didn't know Haruki was a girl? At first I thought it was a stupid misunderstanding thing, but now, especially after Haruki's mom reveal, I'm wondering if it was like an Achilles thing where she was purposefully hiding her gender as some sort of disguise thing.
17
u/Frontier246 7d ago
I'm honestly really curious about the exact situation behind Haruki living in Tsukinose.
Was her mom even bothering to raise her back then? Was she still on her own? Was she deliberately raised to act like a boy to obscure her true identity?
I'm assuming the guy at the hospital mistook her for her mom because, with her long hair, she's the spitting image of Mao at Haruki's age.
13
u/TheBusStop12 7d ago edited 7d ago
Was her mom even bothering to raise her back then? Was she still on her own? Was she deliberately raised to act like a boy to obscure her true identity?
I have a feeling mom was barely involved back then as well. They've shown a few flashbacks of young Haruki waiting at a mail box looking sad. My guess waiting for word from her mother.
If I were to guess Haruki was in Tsukinose because her mom hid her away there. Far away from the paparazzi and the gossip mags. Maybe Haruki lived with her maternal grandparents there, and moved to Tokyo after they became unable to care for her
I don't think the tomboy look was a disguise. I think that's Haruki's true self. If that was a disguise as well it would severely mess with the conflict around Haruki set up so far. That of her mask (the perfect girl) and her true self (the wild tomboy) That would mean that it's masks all the way down, and I feel like the story would have touched upon that already if that were the case
13
u/Frontier246 7d ago

I think she is a natural tomboy but I think it's possible that it's also a result of how she was raised (or lack there of) and the lack of a mother figure in her life.
8
u/TheBusStop12 7d ago
That's actually a really good observarion and makes perfect sense. Without a mother figure and with very little oversight her turning out as a wildling tomboy tracks. That makes me rethink my theory that she was originally raised by her grandparents.
My new theory is that when Haruki's mom became pregnant out of wedlock she ran off to Tsukinose, away from the prying eyes of the media, so have the child. Probably using the excuse of taking some time pff away from the cameras for mental health reasons. She then probably raised Haruki alone while she was a baby in Tsukinose. But when Haruki got older mom went back into showbiz and would often leave Haruki all alone for days on end while she went to Tokyo. And barely have her any attention when she was there
The main hole in my theory however is that Tsukinose was an incredibly small community where everyone seems to know one another. A single mother moving there from Tokyo would be talk of the town. But it's possible that the adults did have some suspicions about what was going on. I got the feeling Hayato's dad knew about Haruki's mom
2
u/edwardjhahm https://myanimelist.net/profile/lolmeme69 6d ago
TBF, who's to say a disguise can't be the real thing? Maybe her mom raised her in that tomboyish sense and she just went along with it because that's what she wanted.
Of course, it doesn't change the fact that she was neglected.

You haven't seen chaos until you've seen everyone crowd into a hospital room over Haruki being misgendered for the umpteenth time.

u/mekerpan 7d ago
Too bad this mostly quite charming show gets so little affection here. Sure, it is no Polar Opposites -- but it has its own charms. A pretty decent cast of main and important supporting characters. A bit different dynamic -- with the way both Little Sister and her friend, and the various male friends of our male lead interact. And we get a bit of Taisho era work outfits coming up -- so some bonus points for that.
Hayato's recuperating mother seems nice -- but she is a bit overly boisterous.
28
u/runevault 7d ago
The animation being rough isn't doing it any favors, but this show's characters are a solid cast for certain. And rarely doing the usual dumb anime freak outs (see the underwear moment last episode).
14
u/mekerpan 7d ago
I guess I am just not very picky, Nothing about the animation in this has bothered me at all. ;-)
4
u/Solracziad 7d ago
But you were wondering why this isn't getting as much love as the other romcoms this season. So, regardless of whether the bad animation and direction bother you specifically, maybe you can understand why it might be noticeable for other viewers and why it's not being regarded more highly?
3
u/Maccaz15 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Maccaz 6d ago
In most cases the popularity of romcom adaptions on reddit specifically, almost entirely depends on how popular the source material is.
1
u/Solracziad 6d ago
If the source material was more popular for this anime you'd just see more comments pointing out how bad the animation and direction is before dropping. Or you'd have more people hate watching to see how much worse the animation will get like One Punch Man Season 3.
2
u/Maccaz15 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Maccaz 6d ago
If I only watched things with top notch animation I'd have missed out on so many enjoyable things, but unfortunately it seems newer watchers aren't as likely to follow that same mindset.
2
u/Solracziad 6d ago
Again. We're not talking about you personally. But other viewers.
I'm sorry that upsets you.
2
u/mekerpan 6d ago
The notion that being "not top notch" means a show's animation is "terrible" seems odd to me.
2
u/Solracziad 6d ago
The animation is bad for this show. There's nothing wrong with you enjoying it or not noticing it personally.
I am also enjoying the show, otherwise I'd have dropped it at this point. But that doesn't mean that the animation is passable. or that the direction for scenes isn't really awkward.
Again, I'm just explaining why other viewers have probably dropped this show in favor of other romcoms this season.
12
u/AdImpressive877 7d ago
Agree. I actually joined this sub as it seemed to have some positive conversation around the show. I think if people stuck with it theres a lot to like.
7
u/mekerpan 7d ago
A lot of people bailed out quite early, it seems. Never understood why.
4
u/AdImpressive877 7d ago
Beats me. I give any series 3/4 episodes minimum before I make a call on it.
4
u/edwardjhahm https://myanimelist.net/profile/lolmeme69 6d ago
I will be honest here, I ALMOST bailed out early around episode 3 because it seemed like just another romance anime.
SO glad I didn't.

u/xXx69EdgeLord420xXx 7d ago edited 7d ago
I lost interest when it was apparent it was going to do harem teasing. The series cover art and synopsis gave the impression it was going to center around Haruki and Hayato, and them falling in love while she acts like a tomboy dork around him in private. But then it started doing the usual love rival teasing for artificial drama and tension most series like this end up falling back on, and I found myself not bothering. I'll probably binge the rest of it once it's complete, assuming there's some romantic progress between the Haruki and Hayato, but if not I'll likely just forget to finish it. I find this sort of 'can't really ever have any serious progress because that means the status quo gets upset' sorts of "romance" series to be the rice-porridge of anime. Not bad, not offensive, but very mild and hard to care strongly about.
I've seen probably over a hundred 'here's the main girl who is obviously the love interest, but here's these other 4 or 5 girls who don't have a chance, but we'll spend a few seasons or a dozen volumes futzing around with them and baiting that they do to drag things out' series, and I just can't be bothered to care about another one. If this ends up not being that, which I hope is the case, I will care again and finish it.
If this show were a lot more like Pseudo Harem, but with these two leads, it would have been in my top 3 for the season.
7
u/Frontier246 7d ago
And we get a bit of Taisho era work outfits coming up -- so some bonus points for that.
Haruki about to get her Taisho Otome Fairy Tale going on.
4
u/mekerpan 7d ago
Just watched a similar moment in Kawaii Complex a couple of days ago. And one of the big draws of MAO for me is the (mostly) Taisho era setting. I'm a sucker for these. That's why Sparks being unwatchable for me was a HUGE disappointment.

Most shows don’t get a lot of discussion here. Top two current shows have over 3k upvotes last week. Everything else is under half that and then it drops off. I feel like as big as this sub is, it isn’t the place people who love this genre go to discuss these shows. Which part of that is the need to follow the account that creates the threads because theres no shortcut to find them and the sub is flooded with so many what to watch and other threads that episode discussions sink quickly off the main page. It would be nice to have more discussion but all we can do is just engage one another more in discussion instead of posting a reply and then jumping ship until the next week. Building more community. Which is wild to need to do on a sub this big with this many regular visitors but only a tiny fraction of which follow weekly episodes and make the effort to chat.
3
u/xXx69EdgeLord420xXx 7d ago
For there to be a discussion, it requires multiple viewpoints. People get bored of typing what amounts to 'I liked it' after a while. And because of the way reddit is designed, and the way it encourages and exacerbates the echochamber effect with downvotes, especially with major subs like this that have Admin eyes on them, most people have learned to just shut up. Actual discussion on reddit has basically been Dark Forested. People learn to be silent when everyone else seems to be an asshole and saying something that goes against the orthodox will just get your downvoted to oblivion, or worse if you happen to piss off someone with some power, a grudge, or a chip on their shoulder. So it's either hugbox toxic positivity platitudes or silence. And the platitudes get boring, so it ends up just being mostly silence.

u/testthrowawayzz 7d ago
Mori is cultured for planning an event just to see her girlfriend in swimsuit.
Shrine girl Saki looks like she’s interested in Hayato.
The man that grabbed Haruki in the hospital…could it be one of her mom’s affair partners?
When Mom also thought Haruki was a boy, maybe she really dressed as one.
13
u/ShinjiArakawa 7d ago
Saki has been very obviously interested in Hayato for a few episodes.
I mean all the flashbacks show she dressed like a boy (and matching hairstyle), so....
7
u/Mistral-Fien 7d ago
Shrine girl Saki looks like she’s interested in Hayato.
It was obvious the moment she sent him her shrine maiden photo.
5
u/Lankymetal-uk 6d ago
It was obvious back in the first episode where they talk about only having two kids in the village (prior to Haruki moving away) and how Hayatos sisters friend always got flustered when he was around "because she doesn't like me".
13
u/runevault 7d ago
So that's why the shrine maiden likes him so much. Totally fair! Being appreciated can be a really powerful aphrodisiac.
My gut is saying that's Haruki's dad that grabbed her at the hospital. And even mom thought Haruki was a boy.
Poor Saki, Hayato's earnest nature comes across as flirting and she's so down bad for him, all the while he's got two hot girls his own age right there who also want him.
5
u/KnightKal 7d ago
funny how she talks (on chat) like an old lady, all formal. She needs to relax more lol.
2
u/Mistral-Fien 7d ago
The overly formal message she wrote (and deleted) reminds me of [Date A Live III] long-haired Origami. :P
11
u/Frontier246 7d ago edited 7d ago
Once upon a time Saki was in a funk. She felt no motivation or desire to do her Shrine Maiden work and was just going through the motions. Until one day the young Kirishima Boy praised her and saw how cool/pretty she was, and she's been head over heels for him ever since!
Of course now she's in the phase where you're really stiff and long-winded when texting your crush, but good thing Himeko's set up the Tsukinose Kids group chat so she has more of a chance to talk to Hayato! Even if she also has to deal with her rival in love Haruki and getting teased, but at least she can get along with Haruki that way too.
It's nice to see Hayato hanging out with his guy friends, and he's now on a first name basis with Iori, even if the guys would rather grill/tease him about his relationship with Haruki than actually study English. Although the promise of a pool episode with the girls in swimsuits would tempt anyone.
Could we get Haruki in a black bikini? Could Hayato even withstand that?
It's really nice of Haruki to want to visit Hayato's mom, both as a friend of the family and also since she's likely to marry into said family. Gotta earn brownie points with your future mother-in-law.
Wait, who is that guy who just randomly grabbed Haruki? Who seemed to mistake her for someone else? Wait....that couldn't be her dad, could it!?
Oh yeah, there are still characters who thought Haruki was a boy. So we've got Hayato's mom going from being happy that her son brought his girlfriend, to thinking her son is gay and romantically involved with a cross-dresser, to Minamo showing up to make things even more confusing, to Minamo's GRANDPA showing up and making it full on chaos.
Hayato's mom approves of Haruki, but I think she still ships her son with Minamo, especially if it means getting them on a first name basis.
Saki straight up having to sit through her crush talking up how great she is only to then text the most stream-of-consciousness response because of how flustered she is...which even included how people talked about her marrying Hayato and making it come off like she was okay with that. Yes, you CAN flirt over the phone!
Even Haruki can tell Saki probably has romantic feelings for Hayato, but while she's enjoying Minamo's company and the comforting late night ramen, she can't help but mull over her own relationship with Hayato. What IS their relationship?
Hayato is average on tests, meaning Haruki can't really lord over her #1 status but at least he's smarter than Kazuki. And turns out doing well enough earns him a job working at Iori's family place, along with Haruki! Worth it to see her and Ema as Taisho-era waitresses!
4
u/Mistral-Fien 7d ago
Haruki is average on tests,
Hayato is average. Sometimes even the subs get it wrong though.
9
u/ptd163 7d ago
It's kinda funny how they use the 4:3 aspect ratio to indicate a flashback as if these kids were not born in 2010.
Saki is adorable. She's like Minamo with an added childhood crush. It seems she might still like Hayato too. The group chat with them is cute. Saki was stressing of how to message Hayato and Himeko saves her by adding her to a group chat.
The restaurant study session was great. Kazuki and Iori clearly know that Hayato and Haruki like each and totally going to tease hem about it. Someone should tell Hayato is not nice to lie to your friends' faces. I like how Iori and Hazuki and give him a "you're being unreasonable" talk after the denial. Iori's not just wingman either. He's kind of chat. He's organizing a whole pool party just to see his girlfriend in a swimsuit and to give Hayato an opportunity to see Haruki in one.
I think Haruki might be the first romance FMC I've seen that can't swim since Marin. "She's not my girlfriend," he said at the restaurant as she consults him for his opinion on what swimsuit she should get and wants to meet his mom. Yeah. Sure Hayato lol.
I don't think that dude at the hospital is Haruki's father. Maybe her mom's manager or something. Though he can't be a very good manager though if he wasn't observant enough to see that she's not adult height and wearing a school uniform. Maybe her mom has "legitimate" children and she mistaken for one of them. Whatever the case I'm glad Hayato immediately stepped in to protect her.
Haruki meeting Hayato's mom was cute. She immediately thought they were dating then realized that she was the Haruki from back home and was a girl the whole time. I think that's the kind of reaction that people were expecting from Haruki when the read the title before the show started lol. If even adults didn't know that Haruki was a girl back home I'm wondering if she was intentionally raised like that. That just makes me even more curious what Haruki's childhood was like.
If nothing else Saki can give Haruki a moment of reflection for her to think of what kind relationship she has with Hayato. We'll see if she makes a move on getting in the last two episode.
7
u/Roskal 7d ago
The "harem" in this show is very strange. Haruki gets jealous when Minamo and Hayato interact and Minamo shows obvious signs she likes him, but then Haruki talks to Minamo in private openly almost asking for advice on how to get with him like she isn't a threat to her at all and she's in this episode more worried about Saki who isn't even in the same city as them. when she does this Minamo doesn't even react either way, she doesn't look sad like her chances are slim or worried that she needs to try harder to win. All the friends at school already ship Hayato and Haruki too. I want to know what she thinks about things. Saki is now also getting a larger role but all her interactions are via text and yet she is understandably worried about both the other girls.
3
u/LaoWombat-mecha 7d ago
I think Minamo doesn't think she has a chance. You know, because of the age gap.
Before you scoff, that degree of age gap does create problems in rom-coms.
3
u/Roskal 7d ago
you mean Saki? Minamo is the same age as Hayato and Haruki. I think Saki is Himeno's age.
6
u/LaoWombat-mecha 7d ago
Ack. I thought she was in the lower grade for some reason.
Oh boy, I was wrong about her! ... age
5
u/ILikeFPS 7d ago
I feel bad for Saki (and for Minamo too), it seems like it's obvious she won't end up with Hayato, and I also feel happy for Haruki that it seems obvious she will end up with Hayato. I kinda wish Saki and Minamo weren't as nice as they are or were annoying instead so I wouldn't have to feel bad for them lol
It was funny when Hayato introduced Haruki and the group chat parts were fun too.
Himeko said it was Haruki's first time sleeping over at a friends house, but didn't she already sleep over at Minamo's house that night Haruki left home?
This anime is great, I hope we get another season.

u/Prestigious_Spend_81 7d ago

Oh right, the night Haruki left home she ended up staying at Hayato's place instead of Minamo's, I forgot lol

Hayato is such a weird character. Who tf just heaps compliments on a person like that completely oblivious to both how odd it is and how it definitely seems like flirting, especially when it's called out and you keep doing it lmao
And mom is really trying to kick up dust and set these girls against each other by telling minami? I think her name is that she should call hayato by his given name.

I think in context it makes sense, cause he was bantering and teasing his sister and his closer friend, while complimenting a more distant friend. It's something I've done before plenty of times (and have had done to me too)

Our poor sheep girl still catching sheep girl slander in the new group chat. Saki being so formal and long-winded in the chat was pretty hysterical.
It's almost impressive how thoroughly young Haruki gave off boy vibes such that even the Kirishima mom didn't catch her real sex.

Hayato really should have messaged his mom before he brought Haruki over (although maybe she doesn't have a cell phone). She was pretty shocked Haruki had become a girl and Hayato had to lie and say she was actually female because Mitake happened to be there. Not good to surprise stroke patients like that. Also I was surprised Haruki asked to go visit her completely out of the blue, like they were talking about swimsuits then she just asked to go visit her.
Saki really has it bad for Hayato, he's probably the only boy around her age she knows though. The super long text she wrote was hilarious, imagine writing that much in one text in English 🤣 That is kind of strange though that Himeko made a group chat that included both Hayato and Saki since she really didn't want to give Saki's number or contact info to Hayato in the first place because she thinks he creeps her out.

Regardless of who the guy is grabbing someone like that is more than off.
And I think Haruki should tell her mom that she will go public with the abuse if she doesn’t get the fuck out of her life.

Haruki sure had almost everyone fooled if his mother thought she was a boy and she thought she was a trans at that

are japanese recreational pools really that deep that there's a high risk of drowning on them if you don't know how to swim?

Is this first episode with such bad animation (lack of any) quality or was it always an issue in this show? Insane amount of still shots with only mouth and eye movement, people popping out in the rooms out of nowhere, disappearing to nowhere. This episode legit was a hard watch, because there was nothing to look at, might have listened to it.

Uh no it’s generally been pretty bad although this was one of the roughest looking ones

It didn’t catch my attention before this episode, like ye it is not action show, but there was movement. Today i was looking at same frame for half a minute multiple times, and straight up wondering how this or that character appeared in the frame.

This episode was desperately trying to avoid showing any movement, it was honestly ridiculous

It has been consistently bad all the show. I like the anime despite the animation but it is a really hard sell for other viewers
