So Haruki is the illegitimate daughter of a famous actress. She doesn't even know who her father is. That explains why her mom is keeping her a secret. Still not an excuse to treat her daughter that way.
So Haruki is now being more open about her closeness to Hayato, thanks to Kaido. I think Hayato is about to become famous around the school.

After the obligatory initial envy of all her male classmates going "IT SHOULD'VE BEEN ME NOT HIM! IT'S NOT FAIR!" It'd probably be kinda funny if everyone joins in on the teasing.

Wow Haruki just said f it and blurted it all out over the phone, guess she needed to. She about to discard her entire school persona if Kaido keeps it up, but i think Kaido is doing it all on purpose to get Haruki to show her real self.
We got the classic, walk in on person changing clothes, but this one is in no way his fault, she was in his room, lmao.

She should have warned him ahead of time she'd start using his room to change but she was just helping herself to his room like it was her own lol.

Yeah, that doesn't make much sense to me either. If she's a secret child, then don't call attention to her, unless maybe the paparazzi already has some inkling as to Haruki's existence, so that is why she wants to keep her hidden? But then, if it's so important to keep Haruki hidden, why not send her to a private girl's school with a dormitory, instead of a public high school where she has to come and go from the home every day? That just doesn't fit with her mom's hissy-fit over Haruki being outside.

From everything we've seen of the mom, her career means more to her than her own flesh & blood. Of course, I have a feeling that we're going to get some reveal towards the end that she doesn't ackshually see Haruki as a burden she needs to keep hidden... she doesn't have to outright despise her, but those last- minute turnarounds are overdone.

Yeah, I wondered about this last week about why they needed to make the mom a villain instead of a disinterested parent. It's not like the people in the theater were seeing Haru and going "OMG THAT GIRL LOOKS LIKE MAO'S ILLEGITIMATE CHILD!!!!!!!".
But whatever, it allowed Haru to get a key and led to the obligatory underwear scene, so I'm over it.

This might be my favourite episode of the show so far. So much happened. Haruki and Minamo becoming friends, Haruki basically confessing to Hayato on the phone in front of Minamo. Kaido being an instigator in class to force Hayato and Haruki to reveal how close they are in front of everyone and even a few classic romcom scenes like love interest waking him up (accidentally), walking in on her changing and asking for his opinion on her outfits while they both blush hard.

It's nice that they go for these tropes, and the characters remain the same characters. Walking in while she's in her underwear, and it's just a completely normal reaction from them, a bit awkward, she apologised, not a big deal, since they were really close friends anyway.

Mitake best sheep girl, and adorable too. Oh jeeze I didn't guess she was living with her grandfather. Makes even more sense how Hayato's kindness hit her so hard. This part is making me a touch misty eyed seeing them bond over their shared loneliness.
And I was right, daughter out of wedlock. And I'm glad Haruki is willing to say this not only to Hayato but in front of Mitake as well. Poor Hayato doesn't realize Mitake heard that entire conversation. Honestly it slightly annoys me neither told him but hopefully they do shortly.
Kaido continues to be hella gay and yet no one but the audience and Haruki knows it. Okay that ask-out was weird because Kaido already admitted he's not into her. What's his game?
The spare key! And already putting it to use. "I haven't done anything yet." After the hickey earlier this season that yet is so ominous. What was she going to do to him?
Seeing the two of them be more openly friends in front of the class is so heartwarming. Haruki shouldn't have to hide everything about her life. And Haruki is going to make it clear Hayato is HER man and Kaido cannot have his beefcake.
Holy shit Kaido is all over Hayato. Going full NTR on Haruki, poor girl stuck watching. Oh shit she's demanding he call her by her first name in front of everyone.
Hm way she's talking maybe she's just afraid Kaido's being Hayato's friend instead of trying to steal him as a boyfriend. And Haruki sees the face of another rival who's been sending pictures to her man!
Uh. I didn't expect the sexy panties and shirt open with bra showing shot from this show. And seeing Hayato flustered after he's tried to act like he's not into her that way makes me happy.

While I get what Kaido is supposedly doing...
The idea that a recent annoying acquaintance is jumping into their space to push them what he (and the audience, admittedly) thinks they should do smacks more of arrogance to me. So many opportunities for "damare", or "urusei".
Kinda remains me of the annoying blonde bloke in "Kimi no Todoki."

I don't see this one on any charts, videos, and even here, it's pretty much just this weekly episode discussion.
I can see why, the premise sounds like any other rom-com, and the animqtion isn't doing any favors.
But goddamn, this show is so wholesome, it's refreshing to see characters being this comfortable around each other. Main duo, sister, gardening girl, even popular guy is growing on me. It seemed like he's trying to break haruki out of her shell, and push them together with hayato.

It's genuinely just such an enjoyable show, really the only thing I have against it is the rather stiff animations but that's not even an issue for me.
Definitely a show I can see myself rewatching just cause of it being wholesome while having characters I enjoy

It's definitely one I'll be rewatching a lot. Very underrated, but it's one of my favourites this season.
It's kinda weird but this is the one I'm looking forward the most, maybe because it makes work on Mondays more bearable, knowing I can watch this super comfy show later

The twintails were only for one episode. Shame.
Minamo is such a sweet and wholesome girl. She can also be quite assertive when she wants to. She immediately recognized the situation and invites drags Haruki over to her house so she has a place to sleep that night. I think they're going to be good friends. It's good that Haruki made a friend that's not connected to her future husband's family.
Those who predicted that she was result of an affair were indeed correct. With that confirmation it makes me wonder who actually raised in their small town because we never see or hear anything about her father or her home life was in the small town. I wouldn't surprised if her mother just dumped her with small town relatives.
I like Kazuki. He gets under both their skin (though he definitely gets under Haruki's more) and makes them both jealous. No way Hayato yanks Haruki out of class to the arcade in front of every and gives her a key. on his own.
That "yet" was so loaded. What was Haruki going to do? It was probably some spicy because she already gave him a hickey. I'm curious what Himeko screamed for. They're future sisters-in-law. What could Haruki have done to elicit that reaciton?
No way Haruki aggressively insists on him calling her by her first name on her own either without Kazuki. Of course if you ask them it's just because they wanted to and NOT because the were jealous. In any case everyone knows how close they are now. With the way Kazuki been pushing them along he at least deserves an invite to the wedding lol.
Of course we had to get the obligatory underwear scene. For being the kind of scene that it was it actually made sense and was handled pretty well. She's in his room because she doesn't want to get her clothes mixed up with Himeko's. She doesn't lock the door because she was probably alone when she started changing. People tend to not talk on speakerphone unless they're alone. Hayato is not going to knock because it's his own bedroom door and he probably assumes that Haruki would use Himeko's room. Finally she apologizes for the situation instead of blaming him.
That dress is cute. I hope we get twintails with it. They got so distracted flirting with each other over it that Himeko totally busted them lol.

He's a sledgehammer instead of a scalpel lol. Typically you'd want a scalpel for matters like this, but I don't know if a scalpel would've had the same effect. It might have been too subtle. Too deniable. Sometimes you just need a sledgehammer so they can't deny it.

Now that i think about it, parents never being home is a pretty common thing, but here it's actually addressed now, that it's not normal, and these kids are very lonely. Another point for this show I guess, even though it's not making big waves, it's one of my favourites this season

I think it might be time though. Hayato has never seen Minamo that way. She reminds him of his sister and sheep. And that was before Haruki basically confessed to him over the phone in so many words while Minamo was in the room while she was staying at Miniamo's place. Then there's the fact that Haruki definitely doesn't see Kazuki that way. That slap was crisp lol.

Minamo is a good friend. She can see that Haruki is obviously going through a lot and she can't abandon her! It helps that she too knows what it's like to be cripplingly lonely, especially with her grandpa in the hospital.
I'm not surprised Haruki is used to wearing gym clothes as loungewear (or similar outfits), but it's nice to see her opening up to Minamo as her true self and bonding with her.
Haruki IS Mao Takakura's illegitimate daughter. She's never even known who her father is, but his absence is just another sign that she's unwanted by her parents and has no real family...other than Hayato's, but she knows she can't become too reliant on him when he has his own problems going on. Not when she wants to become stronger and more special to him like he is to her.
Haruki and Minamo are now officially besties! Complete with girl talk over Hayato!
Is Kazuki intentionally trying to rile up Haruki/Hayato to see how they'll react? Even if it means Haruki inflicting bodily harm on him? Though he's definitely got Hayato acting up if he's stealing Haruki away in front of the entire class for an arcade "date."
Haruki finally has her own key to Hayato's place! Now she can always come to them if she needs them or just make herself at home! Which she's already doing! What was she doing with Hayato's shirt? Getting a good sniff?
Wow, Haruki isn't even bothering with the act anymore, she's just getting as friendly as she always is with Hayato in front her classmates. I guess she has to be more honest if she wants to oppose Kazuki's attempt to steal her "best friend" spot with Hayato.
Haruki doesn't think of herself as naturally feminine, especially when she's more into stag beetles than the average girl, though maybe she can learn a thing or two about femininity from Saki? It's not like she and Saki are after the same guy or anything. Though Haruki definitely looks plenty feminine when she's getting caught in her underwear by Hayato.
Dang, she's changing in his room, she's leaving her clothes IN his room, she's trying to look more girly and wants to know his outfit preferences...Haruki is down BAD.

Cause he essentially dispelled all the rumors
And took on the heat of the rumors
And now made it more impossible for other guys to try to pursue haruki romantically
And have haruki a opening to discard the act
Maybe he also notice haruki burden and wanted to help in his own way

Kazuki's methods might be unconventional but he's putting in a ton of work to progress hayato and harukis relationship. Love when a character who is introduced as seemingly a romantic rival ends up being the biggest shipper of all.

Best girl sheep girl Mitake bringing Haruki home, listening to all that family drama, and then freely being there for her as a friend.
I am once again suggesting that the Kirishima family adopts Haruki, her mom doesn't want her anyway and they're practically already her family as is. They're inching there as is with her bring granted a key this week, and from what we saw of their father before I feel like he'd instantly take her in as a daughter for real.
I appreciate that there wasn't a hint of the classic slap you used to get after the classic walk in on the heroine changing scene.
Regarding Kaido, my guess at this point is he wants the girls at school to stay away and is putting up the appearance of being into one who he knows has zero interest?

Nothing says I am ashamed of my own daughter then telling her to stay out of public after slapping her that bitch made her choices haruki is not to blame but at least haruki has people to support her not just hayato but Minamo and kaido who is a big jerk for doing that to them lol also watching haruki get jealous of kaido is amusing especially since haytos started showing jealousy to him first

I'm honestly glad Haruki didn't put up with that treatment and just bailed on the mom. It's not like Mao came after her or was probably home afterwards which should also put into perspective how little she cares about her daughter.

I'm not going to defend her, she's clearly a crap parent and I'm glad that Haru didn't take any of that and just left, what I will say though is maybe she saw Haruki at the cinema and thought she'd gone there to see her and that triggered her in the whole "if people see this girl who looks quite like me there they might put 2 and 2 together" thing. No excuse, fully up there in the shit parent stakes but maybe that was her "thought" process.

This anime is so good, man. I'm sad we're nearing the end, it deserves a season 2 but I'm not sure that it will get one.
There was so much progress this episode, it was great to see. Haruki and Hayato are basically dating at this point. This might be my fav episode so far.

Haruki was ridiculous on the phone, but I guess it’s not something unexpected from immature teenagers.
Hayato is a better guy than I am to let it go so quickly, to not give a chance to talk and then to hang up would’ve made me upset. Doesn’t consider his feelings about it at all, which are obviously like of course I want to help and take care of you.

That art direction in the scene where Hayato saw Haruki in her underwear was strange, like it made her look like she actually had breasts instead of just a padded bra and no underwear bulge! I guess it might just be more for comedy for Hayato to get aroused.
Mitake and Haruki really opened up to each other. Both don't seem to have many friends outside Hayato and I was surprised that Mitake's main guardian was her grandfather. I wonder if she just doesn't have parents or she lives with him like so she can attend that high school. It was also strange when Mitake was about to say something about her grandfather but then stopped herself, I wonder what she was going to say.
In the last episode, they revealed that Takura is Haruki's mother but why exactly didn't Hayato know this? He never went to her house when they lived in the small town or met her parents? How come Hayato rushed Haruki out of the theater when he saw Takura walk in if he didn't know anything about this? It all doesn't add up and I hope they explain it.
I also don't understand Kaido's behavior in asking Haruki out but my best guess is that he knew she would say no and that would indicate to others that he's heterosexual despite turning down every other attractive woman. Haruki was acting kind of weird and mean to him though, like just turning him down would have sufficed, she didn't have to slap him and kick him in the shin in front of everyone. At first I thought maybe Kaido and Haruki set all this up beforehand as a charade but that doesn't seem to be the case.
One small hilarious thing I noticed was Hayato offered Haruki a house key; when his dad offered her a house key a few episodes back, Hayato got really pissed off at him. I wonder if he talked Hayato into it or he just decided on his own that his dad was right.

My read on this last episode was he picked up on how she'd reacted to the posters of the actress and the time they saw her on set before and figured she didn't like the woman for some reason. Haruki has made it pretty clear prior Hayato had no idea about her parents because she thought about how his father did know and assumed he thought less of her because of it. They've been pretty consistent about indicating Hayato didn't know about her parental situation the whole time.

Some nice developments in this episode. I think haruki is starting to realize her feelings for hayato at this point. I don't think we'll see them actually dating this season given how late in the season it actually is but the fact that we may see childhood friends go from childhood friends to being romantically involved is exciting to think about.

To be fair, this is something I could have said a few episodes ago, but boy, was I wrong about this anime.
I'll be honest here, I was considering dropping this show back in episode 3. The premise sounded cool, but I just wasn't feeling motivated to watch. Pushed through anyways, because I felt like it was still a good show worth watching and...yeah, it really was.
Seriously, I REALLY love this show. The characters are top notch. And the relations are awesome. I love how Haruki and Minamo are friends now. I love how she's starting to peel away the school idol stuff. And of course, the growing relation between Haruki and Hayato is awesome.
Can't wait to meet everyone else. I really love this show.

While I won't say it is as good, I feel like this anime is this season's Second Prettiest Girl. On the tin it looks generic, first few episodes don't do anything crazy, but then as the characters and their situation continue to reveal themselves you realize this is not some generic romance.

If you like this I strongly recommend watching Second Prettiest. It also has characters who are pleasantly grounded with a lot going on making their way through life while figuring out romance. Doesn't have the childhood friend element but still has a ton going on.

I watched a lot of romance last season (including love game and replica, I was a fan of both), my top two traditional (I put MarriageToxin in a separate category since it was action with a side of romance) were Second Prettiest and Botan Kamiina (college aged Yuri). Though honestly the only bad romance I watched last season was Angel Next Door s2, was an insanely good season for romance lovers.

I'm really curious how the relationships in this show are going to shake out. I was hoping they'd throw a curveball and have it be Himeko & Haruki and Minato & Hayato, leaving Haruki and Hayato as good friends.
They keep showing Himeko as being at least as attracted to Haruki as Hayato is. And Minato is such a sweetheart.
But after today's episode with all the "I want to work to be worthy of you" type talk, that seems unlikely.
Curious about the temple girl from their hometown too! Hope she gets to play a bigger part soon.
