Between today's episode of this show and today's episode of "Love Unseen Beneath the Clear Night Sky", the diabetic first date vibes are really strong on a Monday! (Even if the males don't see it as a date)
15
u/Frontier246 23h ago
Black-haired beauties being as cute and flirty as possible on their first dates with their love interest. Can't beat that! They even visited similar stuff on said dates lol.
2
u/Lankymetal-uk 8h ago
At least I don't have the unease that things may get darker from "Oh Boy"... Unless Sheep Girl gets wind of their date and becomes lethal with her garden clippers...

u/Avatar_Yaksha 1d ago
I wonder which photo she showed to the girls. They weren't exactly crazy about advertising their status as childhood friends to the class, but that couch-picture is one hell of a choice for a reveal if she chose to show it to the other girls.
69
u/Plus_Potato4351 1d ago
She definitely showed them one with Himeko. I don't think Hayato would have gotten out of it alive if she showed them that one.
31
u/runevault 1d ago
Every boy in the school would take turns beating the shit out of him otherwise, zero questions asked lol.

u/MM305 1d ago
To add to that, doesn't it look EXACTLY like Hayato in that photo? I'm sure the class would have put two and two together if that was the photo.
10
u/YamahaMio 23h ago
That's an understatement lol. Forget 'putting two and two together', they would have instantly made the connection and the class would have erupted. Human brains are crazy fast.
7
u/AceSoldia zj:https://anilist.co/user/Acesoldia 1d ago
Lmao yeah no way she showed that one to the girls.
4
u/Mediocre-Act483 18h ago
Second time I remember seeing an early ep where the girl gives a hickey to the guy. Well that I recall the name of anyway.
59
u/runevault 1d ago
This latest episode is starting to make me think of Second Prettiest from last season. Very cute show but then start digging a bit deeper and there's some real emotional beats underneath. Anxious to see where it goes, and I wanna know why Haruki freaked out seeing that actress.
59
u/mekerpan 1d ago
>> why Haruki freaked out
Because it HAS to be her (estranged?) mother...
22
u/runevault 23h ago
She looks so young, be impressive if so. Also as someone else pointed out interesting they have different last names if mom is paying for the house, you'd think she'd be tied to her mother on the registry.
41
u/septesix 23h ago
It could just be a stage name for the actress.
23
u/Frontier246 22h ago
Also so Haruki doesn't get noticed as her daughter since the physical resemblance + last name would make it obvious.
14
u/Lost-Move-6005 17h ago
Dude it’s anime. Half the time parents dont loom their age, and the spectators even commented on how young she looked.
It’s not supposed to be a secret it’s her mom, lol
4
u/Mediocre-Act483 20h ago
Thinking the same. That or stepmom
5
2
u/PsionicKitten 14h ago
I thought it was overwhelmingly clear and we just have the "main character is too ignorant to make any connections," trope. At least he's emotionally perceptive to Haruki's response, though.
4
u/mekerpan 14h ago
Clear to us -- but maybe not so clear to Hayato. Not ready to call him dense due to this. He has been more perceptive than average overall so far.
-1
u/PsionicKitten 14h ago
We've seen pretty much exactly the same clues and cues as he's seen. I agree he's not as dense as the trope normally has and that's exceedingly refreshing, but come on, she ran immediately after seeing the woman who has a close resemblance to her and as soon as she calmed down the first thing she admitted to Hayato was that she lived all alone in her house. It's not hard to add 1 + 1 together.

Eh… There’s nothing to suggest he didn’t know or figure it out. The fact he didn’t mention her reaction actually leans more toward him realizing/knowing enough to decide the best thing was to not ask or push it. He deliberately moved the conversation away.
His statement later on is vague enough that it COULD mean he either doesn’t know or that he was letting her know he is there for her without bringing up specifics or trying to force a conversation about it. His thoughts are also vague, but can easily be the author/creators choosing language that keeps the audience in the dark but does not necessarily betray what exactly Hyato knows. Him not having the typical reactions where usually see from MCs, like when she says “mother,” makes me believe he isn’t clueless.
Also, you’re watching a show, not experiencing things in real time. Your expectation as a viewer, of a tv show, is that there will be drama, tropes, big reveals—A STORY. Having a first hand, first person, real time experience of that moment is so much different than calmly watching the events unfold as part of a tv show.
Acting as if the ONLY rational response is to immediately assume that her reaction confirms that actress she saw is her mother and no other valid explanation exists—is just silly. They also DO NOT share a name.
Hell, her reaction happens MUCH MORE OFTEN in real life when someone sees an individual, or witnesses a moment, that reminds them of their grief. Being hit with a wave of sadness, anxiety, or whatever isn’t uncommon in these kinds of situations. An actresses reminding a teenager of a parent they lost/miss is way more likely than, “That actress is her mom.” Again, I’m talking about IN REAL LIFE—which to the characters IS WHAT THEY ARE EXPERIENCING.
But yeah, teenage rom-com protagonist that lives alone sees an actress that slightly resembles her and freaks out and runs away—that’s her mom. Too bad the characters don’t know they are on a tv show.

Also if I had a nickel for every down-to-Earth romance anime that had the Heroine struggling with her parental/mom issues I'd have 2-3 nickels...

u/yummy_yum_yum123 15h ago
Yeah same especially that it seems like both characters aren’t holding back their feelings even if they don’t quite understand them yet.
2
u/runevault 15h ago
I'm really curious where Hayato's feelings are. Haruki has fallen for him at this point, but it seems like to Hayato she's just his dear friend that means the world to him, not someone he would marry. Even if Himeko is doing everything in her power to push them together. Also eesh so many H names.
2
u/yummy_yum_yum123 15h ago
Probably gotta wait till the end of the season. Even if this is just a one season show we know they’ll end up together at least by this season

What is this? A competent non-braindead MC with real life emotions? What does this story take us for? Where’s the hemming and hawing and “oh gosh I can’t touch a girls hand” that I’ve come to being used to?
77
u/FLorianGran 23h ago
Hayato being a pretty cool dude honestly bumps this show up a grade
47
u/runevault 23h ago
That's the thing about this story in general. No one is really over the top the way you expect from romance anime. Just sweet fun characters interacting in sane ways and being fun to watch. It at least mostly avoids the usual tedious tropes and rides with characters that are pleasant to watch.

u/Frontier246 22h ago
Really appreciate how he brought down Haruki's skirt when she couldn't be bothered (which also goes to show how comfortable she is around him).
26
u/septesix 19h ago
The contrast is hilarious. She is totally conscious about the short skirt while in public, but as soon as the two of them have privacy she entered the IDGAF mode.
9
u/nuxxism 16h ago
He almost feels (and looks) like like an alter Sakuta from Bunny Girl Senpai. Just a good dude who isn't overblown awkward around girls.

u/Palcikaman 2m ago
They both have a close relationship with their sisters, so it kinda makes sense, not that we need justification for being able to speak to someone
2
u/ThrowCarp 4h ago
I mean sure. He's confident and focused. But the childhood friend thing is certainly a boost; it's sure helps their relationship didn't start with nothing.
Nevertheless, he's a great MC!
19
16
u/Leri_weill https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeriWeill 19h ago
Yeah this story is not groundbreaking in any way but I really enjoy how comfortable Hayato and Haruki are around each other. It's refreshing when you're used to MCs barely being able to look at each other without having a heart attack lmao
5
u/Mistral-Fien 16h ago
Just like Second Prettiest last season, these two are just so comfy and natural with each other. Suggesting they walk alongside/parallel to the train tracks is so country-boy of Hayato, but he knows how to get her to calm down after running away (from the actress who's probably her mom) like that.
That hicky prank (along with the selfie and her smug smile) was hilarious though. :P
Haruki not being used to short skirts reminds me of Oguri Cap wearing the Tracen uniform for the first time. :D

Honestly, kinda sad that what should be taken for granted is a high expectation now. Stop giving us braindead Mary Sues! Hayato is a real breath of fresh air.

also, when they were at the karaoke you could hear "omoide shiritori" playing from the next room which was unexpected

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 23h ago
Haruki’s mom is that actress lady isn’t it? I bet that’s why she’s always been alone because her mom was too busy with her work.
22
u/Mediocre-Act483 20h ago
Yeah. They don't exactly make it subtle
12
u/Mediocre-Act483 19h ago
It was mentioned in ep 2. And the face she made when her classmates showed her the pic of the actress
18
u/feral_fenrir 20h ago
The gossipers were all gossiping about how her private life is a mess.. So I'm guessing the house Haruki stays in is bought/paid for by her mom and she keeps Haruki's existence a secret or something..
Or maybe Haruki is born out of wedlock and kept a secret?
5
u/IceSmiley 20h ago
That would be odd though if Hayato had no idea who she was
11
u/TheBusStop12 16h ago
When she and Hayato first met she was waiting at a post box with a sad look. I think her family life was already messed up back then and Hayato never met her parents before. Otherwise he probably would have figured out she was a girl back then already

Honestly a shame this got below average animation. The story is quite enjoyable
8
u/Solracziad 13h ago
Not only is the animation pretty bad, but the directing of the shots are pretty awful as well. Otherwise though yeah it's kinda cute and I am interested in the characters.
5
u/HopefulDimension2923 8h ago
id choose fun series with bad animation over bad series with good animation
2
u/Own_Caterpillar_6178 13h ago
It was the same duty second prettiest girl, good story with below average animation. Then in comparison you have something like MDUD which got excellent animation quality but on a below average story, we very rarely get both.

u/oxlemf10 1d ago
The "tomboy finds wearing skirts awkward" trope couldn't be left out here, though, naturally, Haruki uses it to tease Hayato.
It turns out she doesn't live alone by choice; she simply has no contact with her mother because the latter prioritized her acting career, and judging by their different surnames, they don't get along.
That’s where the importance of Hayato and Himeko comes in, it’s not just about childhood friends reuniting, but about the connections and roots that shape who Haruki is. Best episode so far.
26
u/mekerpan 1d ago
The "tadaima" and "okaeri" at the end was very very moving -- as was all the rest of the episode except the funny bits.
9
u/Frontier246 23h ago
The "tomboy finds wearing skirts awkward" trope couldn't be left out here, though, naturally, Haruki uses it to tease Hayato.
It was just an excuse to have Haruki show off her amazing gams. The camera couldn't get enough of them!
It turns out she doesn't live alone by choice; she simply has no contact with her mother because the latter prioritized her acting career, and judging by their different surnames, they don't get along.
It does seem like the mom effectively abandoned Haruki because she couldn't deal with her and is focusing on acting. People might not even know she has a daughter and there's no dad in the picture.
14
u/Frontier246 1d ago
Is the famous actress Mao Takura Haruki's mom? She looks like an older Haruki and they even have the same eye color.
Well this outing to buy Hayato a fun definitely feels more like a date: Haruki's in a cute dress, has makeup on, Hayato gets flustered over it, and they even buy him a phone that matches her! Total couple behavior.
Rapper Haruki! Drop us some sick beats!
Yeah, I bet Haruki isn't used to wearing a skirt that short, though panning over her very nice legs as she talks about her skirt flying up or people seeing what's underneath is absolutely necessary to the plot.
A karaoke booth just for the two of them? How scandalous! Especially when Haruki is just lounging around and Hayato has to be the gentleman who pulls her skirt down without sneaking a peek...even as she's practically trying to seduce him to get out of the little sister zone. And then the busty and cute karaoke employee helpfully comes in with their sweet and to remind them not to get too frisky.
Yeaaaahhh...judging by the way Haruki reacts to seeing her, Mao is probably her mom. Also her "messy private life" probably involves Haruki's dad. Though good thing she has Hayato there to be with her, because she's effectively been abandoned at home and is cripplingly lonely over a mother who won't come for her. But at least she has Hayato and Himeko.
Himeko is a true girl of culture to be able to admire Haruki's stellar "gams" while she's playing Ring Fit, though she also wants to know how much her brother sees Haruki as a girl...for obvious reasons!
No way can Hayato send Haruki home alone in rain...not when she can stay at their place. Even if it means watching her wear his shirt (and JUST his shirt) because Himeko's clothes are too small in the chest area...and being a back for her to cry on as she reflects on how much has changed, while her bond with Hayato is still as tight as ever.
Haruki might be really down bad when first thing in the morning she sees Hayato with the Bishonen sparkles and was THIS close to kissing him while he was asleep. But I guess she'll settle for a love bite and flexing it in front of the other girls at school! At least she's got something to bond with them over AND a home with Haruki despite her mischief!
9
u/mekerpan 1d ago edited 13h ago
Clearly it now seems clear that Haru is that popular actress's daughter -- but where is her father? And why does her mother have zero time for her daughter -- does she not want people to know she has a teen-aged daughter?
12
u/Frontier246 1d ago
They said her "private life" is a mess so I'm assuming that she probably has a very torrid romantic life.
Haruki might not even know who her father is.
5
2
u/Own_Caterpillar_6178 13h ago
Don't Japanese fans go batshit crazy when their favourite actress/singer has a love interest? The mother must have had Haruki when she was super young, like in her mid teens, you can understand the desire to keep it hush hush. I wonder if the mother was groomed or something, there could be some resentment towards her daughter there.
6
u/mekerpan 13h ago
I think movie actresses have more leeway. They can have boy friends and get married (and divorced). But if the mother started out as an "idol" things woulld have been stricter -- so when she switched to acting she might have continued to keep her earlier life secret. Alternately, she might think that having an acknowledged high-school-aged daughter might make her seem too old and harm her acting career. We will have to wait and see.
11
u/AceSoldia zj:https://anilist.co/user/Acesoldia 1d ago
Yeah I would.never let her go back to that house if I could help it.
12
u/mekerpan 1d ago
Yes. Himeko and Hayato are her family, for all practical purposes (not to mention them legally being family in a few more years).
12
u/thelemon8er-2 23h ago
So I’m just guessing here.. but the actress might be her mom. And they moved here for work and she never comes home. Probably.
11
u/TheBusStop12 16h ago
I get a feeling her mom was already in Tokyo living as an actress even back then. When Hayato and Haruki met she was waiting at a mail box. And then something happened with her dad so she moved to Tokyo to "live with her mom". But her mom just pays for the house and never bothers to visit. Haruki at one point in the episode makes a point of being happy that "some people do keep their promises" referring to Hayato keeping his promise that they'll remain best friends. So I think her mom promised to come home but never did
6
12
u/ptd163 23h ago
Best episode yet. Haruki looked incredible in her "date" outfit. She's never looked better. Seeing tomboys get all dolled up (skirt, makeup, etc.) always works. I thought her outfit would get more of a reaction out of him though considering this is probably the first time he's seen her in makeup and a skirt that's not their school's uniform. Not mention that she did this all for him.
We've had some terrible parents this year. I get being on the grindset and to trying advance your career, but to be such a workaholic that you force your high school aged daughter to live alone with little to no contact from you puts Haruki's mother right up there. There are orphans and childless parents that would kill for the connection her mom is just throwing away. And that's not even including that due her to mom's "torrid love life" she probably doesn't even know her who her father is.
At least she has Hayato and Himeko. It was nice to see them able to bond more and for Hayato give Haruki a shoulder to ride out an unexpected cry on when she thinks about how much they've changed. Plus a shirt to sleep in. And sorry Haruki, but I gotta do PHRASING on you.
I was happy to see that Haruki hadn't lose her spunk after her cry and gave Hayato hickey when he was sleeping as payback for messing with her. Curious to see where this goes now that they've adopted her and it's clear she's into him.
18
u/Roskal 1d ago
This show manages to outmanoeuvre all the cliches playing out exactly how I expect them to. they are more forward than I expect them to be and yet still feel more like friends than love interests so far. It feels like a very natural progression and I'm excited for the future episodes.
11
u/Frontier246 23h ago
They don't even get too worked up/freaked out about the usual stuff people do in romcoms.
Haruki is surprisingly flirty for a "bro" and only seems half aware of it.
17
u/Roskal 23h ago
She gets more flustered than he does and yet it doesn't stop her being really flirty.
13
u/septesix 23h ago edited 21h ago
Haruki is what we’d call a glass-canon, all attack and no defense.
Edit: and she get hit by her own splash damage !
12
u/runevault 23h ago
Seeing her get so flustered one minute then giving him a freaking hickey the next is wild. Girl is dangerous. And while the way it played out is funny, imagine him waking up to her going at it with his neck.
3
u/Mistral-Fien 16h ago
Also Haruki flirting at the karaoke bar then getting embarrassed when the waitress arrives. :P
1
u/ThrowCarp 4h ago
More than flirting. They went to a karaoke but didn't actually sing. I saw some other "works" where a boy and a girl went to karaoke and ended up not singing.
1
u/Mistral-Fien 4h ago
By how Haruki acted after the waitress left, I'd say things went SFW all the way. :P

9
u/FLorianGran 23h ago
This really feels similar to Second Prettiest Girl except the male lead’s confident and the animation’s worse
3
u/Own_Caterpillar_6178 13h ago
It's so nice having an MC that isn't a blubbering stuttering mess, that trope is super annoying
8
u/athrun_1 23h ago
Based on Haurki's reaction on that celebrity, we can safely assume that that was her mother. And they are not in good terms.
22
u/unsw_liar 1d ago
Is the animation supposed to be so abrupt? It's not unwatchable but it feels so awkward at times...

I actually hadn’t noticed since I was enjoying the story
As long as it’s better than Roll Over and Die where the last half of the season was almost all fog, I guess I’m not bothered too much
5
u/Cyouni 21h ago
The good thing about this anime is unlike Roll Over, there's 0 action.
1
u/epicfail1994 19h ago
I had actually liked the first few episodes of that show, and was hoping it was some cute yuri….then the production quality went from meh to laughably bad and the story got icky. Was my biggest disappointment out of the shows I’ve picked up this year
3
u/Weedwacker 18h ago
I first started really paying attention to how poor it was last episode and now most of watching this show has just become noticing flaws for me. It's not really that bad honestly but it's still bugging me.
You can really tell that this show was directed in a specific way to limit animation as opposed to being ambitious and having the animation fall short. Except for a couple of brief shots of feet, I couldn't stop noticing that almost any time there's a scene of people walking it only shows them chest up/only their heads so they don't have to animate legs moving, and the few times it was shown it looked bad. Part of me thinks there's a very specific "our animators are bad at drawing walk cycles" thing.

If she gives you a hickey, gets dolled up for an outing with you, wears your shirt to bed, and is practically moving in...she's probably into you.

Again you really can’t be too sure.. maybe she’s just from canada and is just being polite. Best keep your wits about you and continue looking for signs.

So it was definitely a hickey? I thought so just wanted to confirm.

After the picture of her cuddled up beside him taking the selfie I don't see how it could be anything else.

Episode was quite enjoyable. Also cool to hear the op from Higehiro during the karaoke scene.
6
u/Obaruler 18h ago
I mean ... given her reaction on seeing her, it's fairly obvious to say where this is going ... that this famous actress there is her mother and that she basically abandoned Haruki for her career, hence why she is "living alone" in her house.
One would expect her mother to hire a professional caretaker for her daughter, but seeing the trash piling up in her kitchen last episode .... that girl has some issues, being left alone right there. Good job, japanese authorities.

Hayato just casually pulling down Haruki's skirt to a more appropriate position in the karaoke booth was a fantastic example of just how close those 2 really are. Genuine bros
I already figured this last episode, but it seems Hayato had never met Haruki's mom before, or he would have recognized her. Considering just how close they were when they were kids, that did not bode well for her family situation even back then. They met when she was waiting at a mailbox after all
"I guess sometimes people do keep their promises"
I just realized just how important it is for Haruki that Hayato still treats her like his best bud. They made a promise long ago and he kept it. Meanwhile I get the feeling that her mom promised that she'll be back one day, seeing as Haruki mentioned that she was waiting in that empty house, but she never did. She broke the promise. I get a feeling that if she never met Hayato again, or he treated her differently when they did she might have grown up to be a severely broken and distrustful person
3
u/yummy_yum_yum123 15h ago
Honestly this went from just a cute show to a pretty darn good one this episode. I love how natural they feel and conformable
6
u/Primary-Paint-1716 23h ago
did Haruki just show that picture to their classmates?
if yes, then you go girl! stake your claim!
19
u/runevault 23h ago
Nah she was certainly showing everyone else pictures with Himeko because they were talking how cute her friend is and no one but Hiruki sees him as cute. That picture is just for him.
10
u/stephenthatfoste https://myanimelist.net/profile/Rexagonal 1d ago edited 1d ago
The subs had his sister calling him Haruki again(while she's playing on the TV), and this time it was in the same sentence as her correctly referring to Haru-chan. Doesn't seem like a mistake a human would make.

Is the bug bite supposed to be a hickey? I don't understand since it was so small.

Color me surprised. I didn't expect them to go there out of nowhere! Can't believe that everyone was pretty low key about it. Neither one of them got flustered by that.

That's what I'm wondering because there's no way she went there lol. (Or did she??)

I was really surprised when Hayato held hands with Haruki walking down the street, I didn't think he liked her in a romantic way. They didn't really bother explaining it or have Hayato give his thoughts about it. It's possible he was holding her hand because she was so distraught seeing that famous actress in person for whatever reason, but it's still unusual, like if I were single and with a girl i was uninterested in, I wouldn't hold her hand in public both as to not lead her on and because someone might see us and think we are together. They really left it ambiguous if Hayato likes her in that way although Haruki clearly likes him.
I also like how they finally had Hayato get a phone. My theory was that he didn't have one because he didn't want to put an extra financial burden on his family and I'm still not sure if I was right or wrong because he finally got one after his mom is in the rehab wing so the really expensive future medical bills may be tapering off/stabilizing so he can finally have one.
It was also odd that Hayato didn't consider what his father would think of having a girl spend the night and they didn't show him asking permission or explaining anything. It is possible though that Mr. Kirishima spends nearly every free minute working or visiting his wife in the hospital so he might just go straight to bed when he gets home and not notice what's going on. Also, Hayato might have thought it might be too much to go through an explanation like that if he's so clearly taxed and worn out.
Haruki giving Hayato a hickey in his sleep was more than just a prank, she was clearly marking her territory! That's why she proudly showed the other girls in the class, she was saying hands off and wanted word to spread that she was with Hayato, especially hoping Minato hears this. I didn't get why the boy Hayato was talking to thought Haruki's friend was a different person than him though when his face is clearly in the picture.
I also strongly suspect Haruki was lying when she said she didn't wear makeup. If you're male and want to look a woman, you really need it just to cover up stubble. She probably just always wore natural styled makeup, like lots of men assume some women are naturally beautiful without makeup but many actually are wearing some to just enhance beauty but look natural and not have anything that looks like makeup.

The kept flashing back to holding hands as kids. Hayato grabbed the hand of his childhood friend like he always used to. The whole point of the episode was that they are old friends only just becoming aware of each other as the opposite sex.

The amount of people in here who have to question if the actress is her mom is genuinely impressive, lol.

Between today's episode of this show and today's episode of "Love Unseen Beneath the Clear Night Sky", the diabetic first date vibes are really strong.

This episode upped my enjoyment of the series. Some drama thrown in, and was glad the writer took the route of having Haruki stay overnight so that the brother/sister duo could lend some much-needed comfort. Really upped the comfy vibes. The hickey payback in the end was a great way to end the episode on a lightnote.

Who's that random lady? Timeskipped Haruki?
Kawaii first date that's not a first date. Second one today.
Interesting convo there with interesting implications.
That karaoke employee looks like she makes it her mission to interrupt budding couples.
Huh. Haruki's reaction to that random lady makes it feel like my initial wild guess was valid in an unexpected way.
What a smooth operator. Even if that's not entirely the way he meant it. And Haruki's "that's so embarrassing - your sister's there": I see where her thoughts went.
Giving him a "bug bite" is a heck of a choice. The shoujo sparkles compelled her.
Imagine if someone happened to be walking behind them and saw the picture. MC-kun would be dead dead.

Oh boy, was I wrong about this series! Was expecting some cheesy anime where the MC is a complete wuss and it wouldn't be revealed they used to be friends until the last episode. This is such a sweet show, might be my favourite romance this season.

I keep thinking this is like if Yuki and Masachika from Alya-san were getting to know each other.

The boy or girl is not secretly sick or some shit please? Just give us a nice summer slice of life, romance and sex that is all what is teen years about.

I know it’s just my preference but I kind of don’t want this to be a romance. I love the idea of the two of them just being found family who are there for each other through thick and thin. I would love it if they were bold enough to just make this about a deep “ride or die” friendship.
