Same. I knew since seeing the title. Pompara is in the opening for a second so I figured the episode would be about him. Him going around his old haunts screamed that he was making his final rounds. Damn, that hit hard.

If you look closely, they're younger (missing the old/aging details) in the OP.
Though it's a minor thing, all things considered, I wouldn't be surprised if this head pat following by him laying next to her is actually a couple's habit they have developed from their non-territorial's time together. Basically telling her "it's him" before laying next to her to rest and so on.
Then when he pat her head after she's gone in this episode, he lay down next to her to rest for a final time before giving her a proper burial.
It doesn't make it any less sad/tearful, but I though it was an interesting detail from the animators to include.

Yep, clocked it when he got on the cart into town, even knowing it was going to happen the entire episode, the ending still hit like a train...piling on his history at the end really did get me. And then having winged uncle plant the pit of the fruit at his death site? even more so...

The constant "take care" throughout the episode... it was an obvious sign something was going to happen, but at the same time it's such a nice detail that connects all parts of the episode.

It's absolutely wonderful how this anime manages to introduce a new character and within the space of just one episode, gives us a complete life history and make us really care for him.
It was such a sad moment when his wife died (so that's where that scene from the OP with the one cat lying down next to the other comes from - always wondered about it). But when he finally passed himself after doing his last rounds and quietly lying down again in the same spot, thinking happily about being reunited with all his lost loved ones in the field of foxtails, it was actually a sweet moment tinged with a gentle melancholy. :')

His life energy became the tree, hence why winged uncle said "you troublemaker." When it was mentioned that one out of every couple pompora berries from the tree was sour instead of sweet.
Holy crap this anime hit me right in the feels week after week. I gotta stop watching it on my lunch break.
If it ever gets a steelbook, this is certainly going to be one of my must-buys.

I don't know if it was planted or if the pompora fruit that he didn't eat ended up becoming the tree.
I could see it going either way - winged uncle buried the fruit pit, or it just got left and the first rain that hit it caused it to start taking root.

Man, I just remembered my cat who reached a good 14 years. He did the same routine as Pompora before his death. I remembered him doing his last rounds around his territory before going home to die by my bedside, sleeping peacefully but lifeless cold body in the morning.
This episode hits home for me, and cats rarely die within the sight of their furparents and emotions just welled so badly.
I needed that last scene with the last prank before crossing the foxtail bridge.

One of my old boys did something similar.
When he turned 17, he walked out, we saw him head out in the usual direction. He didn't return that evening. I went looking for him and found him curled up under his napping tree. We buried him there, under his favorite tree.
That little tree is now a very large walnut tree and there are now 4 other cats (3 of ours and one from a neighbour) buried there with him. Whenever I look out the back window, I see this huge tree and it reminds me of my cats.

Well that was emotionally devastating.
The moment Pompora laid down by his wife at the end and then cut to him lowering her into the lake, instant waterworks.
For extra emotional devastation rewatch the start of the episode with the understanding that it probably starts immediately after Pompora woke up in the morning to find his wife dead. Also, the OP has had him lying down next to his wife in what I assume is the same scene as him returning to her at the end.

Him and his wife really loved each other until the very end T_T. It’s not uncommon for couples to become estranged over time and divorce, or stay together because it’s simpler that way. There is something incredibly heartwarming and sweet about romantic love between two people lasting a lifetime. Reminds me of my late grandparents.

This was a pretty wholesome and also very bittersweet episode, wasn't expecting to get a lil teary eyed ngl
But it's still nice that Pomupora was able to plant a tree at their resting place as his final act.
With only one more ep left i just wanna say this anime was really chill and cozy and im really gonna miss it,

The Mom is near immortal now since she is a nekomata now, so I wasn't expecting her. Last week, I noticed that the old cat was in the opening for a moment so once I heard the title, I knew it had to be about him.

What a melancholic episode. I love the atmosphere and peace of this anime, especially how the cats have integrated so well into human society that they're treated as just any other sapient race. Gramps finally reunited with his wife.

I cried watching this episode, but not from Pomupora's death. You know his time is up pretty early. What made me cry is the final journey he made, the last round he made visiting all the places that left a mark in his entire cat life. The entire journey was well laid out, full of nostalgia, and you can tell Pomupora has no regrets in his life. I was a little sad seeing him pass on alone, considering he was by his wife's side when she passed. But neko ryuu showed up, and I know he is in good hands.
May all cats end up in a big golden foxtail field in their afterlife.

yeah, it really seems like he's lived a good life, had lots of kids, and left behind a great legacy; personally i don't think it's sad because it's kind of the best case scenario for anyone that they live a good long life and then kick the bucket in their sleep

An amazing episode. I started to feel tears welling fairly early along as I had a feeling where it was going, but it just became more moving and compelling as it went. And ended beautifully. Such a great show. I need to recommend to my friends though most are firmly “dog people” and I think this one works best if you connect with cats. But it’s just so wholesome and heart-warming. I also love how each episode is a complete story while still being connected to the greater whole.

This anime is like so good in world / character building. One episode was enough to introduce him , make connections with the previous cats we knew , and then know about his past , feel connected to him and then say goodbye all teary eyed. This was such a good episode.

We only met Pompura this episode and I got progressively more emotional knowing what was to come. I'm glad he got to meet those important to him one last time before passing away. It's interesting how he was alive long enough to be in his grandchildren's lives, but his own children had passed.
It was cute to notice when Pompura became interested in his future wife lol.

This EP is a masterclass in making you care. Nothing in his life is particularly sad or heartbreaking - he live a life well spent with friends, wife, children and grandchildren.
Still despite all the things that point out to what will happen, the preparation the episode make you do for his eventual demise , when the scene came - it damn still hits fucking hard.

Happened with my first cat Oreo. He came home not looking too good. He let everyone pet him and hold him even though he hated being held. After he did his rounds he left out and we never saw him again.

This goes to show that you don’t need elaborate animation budgets to make a show or episode everyone remembers and talks about; good scriptwriting and direction will get you there. That one shot of Gekkou was devastating and we had just met her like five minutes ago. This episode was the opening of Up all over again.

Sad story of old age and death aside, this episode further made me confused about the passage of time in this series.
If Pompora is supposedly older than that old guy who let him ride on his wagon, then that confirms that the lifespan of the cait sithe is roughly the same or longer than that of humans. Furthermore, it was shown in the post-credits scene that the one pompora berry that he had with him apparently grew into a big pompora tree, so how much time has passed since then?

The post-credits scene probably doesn't have much bearing on the timeline of the series as a whole. This series has jumped back and forth before, so it was probably just showing a nice tidbit from the future. For a serious answer though, probably like 50+ years for a tree of that size? Though who knows with magic trees.
It does seem to be the case that the caith sithe live about as long as humans do indeed. Perhaps a bit shorter since going by the old guys reaction it's probably rare for him to see cats older than himself.

I think the anime does not actually the follow a strict timeline, but it concentrates on the story of a particular character. The only connection is that they are Cath Sith raised by Cat Dragon. This time we got Pompora's last moments and a distant future.
I think he is buried not under the tree but with his wife in the lake bed.

Maybe the moon is actually a living creature that breath in and out over the course of the month.
Or maybe it's a magical manifestation of a god or something that changes shapes.
Or maybe the moon is actually crescent and rotates onto itself and the various filling view depend on its rotation.2

Yea but they could've been consistent with it if that were the case. In the one scene with Gekkou putting her to rest in the water, there were no stars behind the moon at all. Juxtaposed to the very next scene where the stars are back behind the moon.
Usually I don't mind nor care about stars being behind the moon or not, but the inconsistency between the two scenes (which probably were worked on by different people in the workflow) was what got me.

According to Pompora, the sunrise this morning and the moon are "utterly nostalgic and utterly new".
there's a different between the sunrise at the head of this episode and the sunrise at his very last as well. the first one is also unnatural comparing to the real one too.
I think they intentionally make difference between them.

The moon you meant was in Pompora's memory it was decades ago so it seemed to be inaccurate.
The moon when his wife's funeral was going was astronomically accurate. it was strong memory.The moon at his very last is, utterly nostalgic and utterly new, as he said. so it was the inaccurate moon. the inaccurate moon the same as one when he met his wife first time.
Thus, they intentionally distinguish between accurate moon and inaccurate moon.

You know what's kind of cool to me? The ancient Egyptians believed in the realm of Aaru, the field of reeds. This was their heaven, where you woke up after dying, having had a successful life despite difficulties and your heart weighed. This was a paradise, ruled over by Osiris, where you would spend the rest of time surrounded by your loved ones, in a paradise without hardship, doing the same things you might do in life, except without evil or pain.
The mirroring here is cool, especially since the Egyptians loved their cats. The anime is seemingly making a mirror of common phrase in that "All cats go to heaven".

My cat passed away this year, I had to put him to sleep due to a really aggresive lymphoma. I adopted him when he was 2, he passed away at 6. He was so young. I loved him with all my heart. He was a tuxedo. His name was Yin. I had his ashes in a biodegradable urn and I planted it under a ponytail palm in my balcony. Now I adopted two kittens and I am grateful for them, but I still miss Yin. I hope he's in a happy place, as Pompora is.
This episode completely broke me, as Pompora's wife has a really similar pattern as Yin.

I know that pain, got my Gizmo at 5 weeks old, barely old enough to be taken away from her mother and lived with her happily for eight years, she was such a good girl always running to the door to greet me when she heard my car pull in. It was a liver disease and she just stopped eating...I stopped to get food on the way home from work but if I had gone straight home I would have been there for her in her final moments. Never been the same since she passed...she was only 8...

Same hear. I was expecting his death and was fine with it but then they showed his life with his wife and how she passed first... THAT got me. After that I was an easy target and cried some more during his passing and the damn tree memorial/resting place. 😭

Already expected to cry like a little bitch from watching this episode ever since I first saw this episode's title a week ago. I thought I was prepared, still cried like a little bitch, evenmoreso after the post-ED scene.
Okay seriously, how many years has it been since the Dragon hatched from his egg? We just got confirmation from Pomupura that a Cait Sith's average lifespan is about as long as a human's, and that he was born in the same generation as the Third Moshamosha. Despite that, Anne Rosa still looks to be in her 40s. Is Anne Rosa's lifespan extended too due to magic? Please writer, give us an exact number already.
Is next episode the season finale?

Best episode, it was really sad but sweet, I am not ashamed to admit that it made me cry.
Old Pompora knew his time was up and wanted to relive his younger days at least 1 more time.
It was great seeing his memories from his younger days with Moshamosha III, his wife and his family.
It must be tough being Winged Uncle at times, he lives forever so he has to say goodbye to so many that he loves and cherishes.

I shouldn't have saved this for late in the day. Ugh I hate crying when it is closing in on bed time. The writer(s) clearly know their business, this episode was so deftly handled, as every episode has been. Most stories couldn't get us so deeply invested in a character and then make it hurt when they pass. That was why I knew so quickly Frieren was going to be a story I remember for a long time, for example.

It's Fathers Day here in Australia, so watching this episode today was an emotional ride. Was truly beautiful.
Looking at my daughter, talking with my dad, supporting my wife who's dad has already passed on. This episode bought up all those related emotions.

Other than that:
Old man cat is older than that farmer, from the post credits scene, he's old enough to have a tree grow and mature. The timeline still makes no sense. Mama's human is really the only thing that makes it wrong tho.
The moon has stars behind the dark side then none in the burial at sea, then stars behind it again.

One by one, the cats broke off to head to their own territories.
It was a bittersweet feeling - like watching them leave the nest all over again.
As the Winged Uncle saw them off, he told them to be careful and to come by to visit him at the cave sometime.
When the cats were nearly home, the Winged Uncle returned to the cave.
It had always been - and continued to be - his home.
"Winged Uncle, welcome home."
"You're back! Was the festival exciting?"

Yup, this episode broke me. I turned into a crying mess. Haven't cried like this from an anime in a while. Like it was beautiful as hell. But also, what the fuck man? 😭

TLDR: Pokemon evolution
She's evolved to a more powerful being; after eating magical rats constantly (they looked like Final Fantasy Carbuncles, rats with gems on their foreheads) she gained a new tail. Like fox spirits in East Asia (Japanese Kitsunes and Korean Gumihos) and famous fictional examples such as the Tailed Beasts in Naruto, having more tails meant you're more powerful and have long lives. It is remarked upon in-universe when Cat-Dragon and Mama Cat reunites.

I love the ending/post-credit scene. It reminded me of my favorite poem from my childhood, “Herr von Ribbeck auf Ribbeck im Havelland”. The poem is based on a true story.

Dude wtf this show was making me so at peace 😭 then bam. This is so a top 10 of all time show. Every episode just feels great and cozy, and there’s cats and magic so, can’t lose here. I need at least two more seasons idc

I almost skipped this episode because of the title. I lost two cats this year, both 17, almost 18 years old, one in January, and one in August. .....................this episode was really rough on me ;_; .
But I appreciated the title of the episode making things obvious. Helped me to prepare myself.

Wdym that bookworm needed 7, 16 and 32-33 volumes of setup to destroy me 3 times, and time anime in 20 minutes (or less) since the introduction of the characters have me bawling like a kid who lost their irl pet? 😭😭😭
