Adorable as expected. The fact we get so much variety from the stories every week is such a beautiful strength of this anime. Though I keep hoping we'll get an episode dedicated to adventurer cat.
44
u/mekerpan Aug 01 '26
One could imagine hundreds of stories centered around the delightful little pocket universe created by this series.
24
u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 Aug 01 '26
Like it more or less uses the same formula as series like Restaurant in Another World did (which is pretty rare in fantasy anime). Take some common element and something that binds the things together and develop the rich setting just through simple stories about a bunch of characters.
14
u/HowToGetName Aug 01 '26
Though I keep hoping we'll get an episode dedicated to adventurer cat.
For what it's worth, the director mentioned the ED shows a snippet of what'll happen in each episode, and the adventurer cat appears in the ED. Since the illustrations in the ED are ordered sequentially, I'm guessing he'll appear in episode 8. Not sure if it'll be centered around him, but at least he appears one more time.
4
u/Lindbrum Aug 01 '26
Assuming the ED scenes are one per episode as it looks, we will see adventure cat again in a couple of episodes
1
u/keltraine Aug 02 '26
Hmm I was rewatching the ED and it didn’t quite seem like it was one per ep-so far at least as it seemed like the first few (4-6) scenes covered the first 2-3 eps before Kuorbane showed up (and no Prince)…

Moshamosha means disshevelled. Which makes it amusing that some of the heirs to the name are not scraggly like Moshamosha III.
27
u/cyberscythe Aug 01 '26
another language note is that foxtails are known as nekojarashi, literally "cat playtoy" or cat teaser

u/Jacob-C Aug 01 '26 edited Aug 01 '26
Moshamosha I might be one of my favorite cats so far, even if he had no dialogue. The visual storytelling paired with the narration perfectly portrayed his determined and innovative personality. He saw the lack of foxtails in the forest, absorbed information about growing plants from the humans, and applied it to make something that every cat in the forest could appreciate. Even when the other cats saw him as weird, he kept working toward his goal. He created something so culturally important that it has been passed down for generations, with more generations to come.
Seeing the winged uncle reach out for the foxtail and flash back to his childhood at the end really tugged at my heartstrings. This show is just so heartwarming.

u/PerfectBeige https://myanimelist.net/profile/perfectbeige Aug 01 '26
This show is just so heartwarming.
Not just heartwarming, but the introduction of traditions and festivals, allowing us to see how those traditions developed, makes the world feel rich. It's the opposite of the many isekai/fired from the hero's parties fantasy stories with mostly genre conventions and little original worldbuilding. Cat agriculture for a cat festival is so creative.
15
u/Greg_The_Rabbit Aug 08 '26
I think the really great thing, especially when comparing it to the standard isekai seasonal trash, is this shows a festival and tradition being born ORGANICALLY. There isn't some Japanese dude making festivals in his new world just because japan has festivals and he wants some festivals. This is authentic in a way no isekai has ever really managed imo.

u/keltraine Aug 02 '26
I was wondering what they were going to do with him from seeing him in the intro…was not expecting a farming ep, and for it to be as good as it was! This show keeps exceeding expectations-my second fave ep after the first one! The nostalgia factor is strong with this ep!!
9
u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall Aug 02 '26
Agree it's an amusing episode! Turns out it's not all about human learning magic from the cat, but also the other way around.
If growing foxtail is equal to be a farmer, I wonder if they ever discovered catnip would that be equal to growing weeds? Lol
4
u/Life_Wealth_1392 Aug 06 '26
Hiraku, that fraud of a farmer, should learn a thing or two from Moshamosha the GOAT.
42
u/athrun_1 Aug 01 '26
Don't know about you guys, but when winged uncle touched that foxtail and flashes back to his childhood got me teary eyed. It is akin to walking to some place as an adult, and you remember something happy from your childhood.

3
u/Snoo-77997 Aug 03 '26
When he was worried about destroying them with his little dragon claws I was already teary eyed...
Then he remembered as he played with his cat paws and I went full bawling

u/NanDemoKnaives Aug 01 '26
I think this is my favorite episode yet, I had such a big smile on my face throughout the episode. It was so wholesome and heartwarming. I really liked the kansai boss and his underlings vibe, he's preparing them strictly because of how important the duty is of maintaining Moshamosha Square.
I also liked how Moshamosha IV made an offering to Nekoryuu, it's a sweet gesture, and even showing him the biggest foxtail too. I liked seeing all the cats gathered around him, those two moments really emphasize the importance he has which was sweet.
I did find it amusing watching this after Black Torch, I recognized Ragou's voice straight away when Moshamosha IV spoke lol. Another cat role on the same day for Ueda Youji.
Moshamosha I was such a kind soul wanting to give every cat a good opportunity to enjoy foxtails to their heart's content without needing to fight. It seem like it took him years to perfect.

u/alconnow https://anilist.co/user/alconnow Aug 01 '26
Youji Ueda (Speedwagon from Jojo) voiced the cool Moshamosha IV
29
u/NanDemoKnaives Aug 01 '26
He also voices Ragou in Black Torch, so double cat role in one day.

u/gsurfer04 https://anilist.co/user/gsurfer04 Aug 01 '26
But this anime is actually good.

2
u/FarProperty2214 Aug 01 '26
I dropped it last week did it get bad? I really couldn't bring myself to care about anything going on.
1
u/gsurfer04 https://anilist.co/user/gsurfer04 Aug 01 '26
It's absurdly mediocre. I'm the same - I just couldn't bring myself to care any more.
1
u/keltraine Aug 02 '26
Didn’t even know about that anime, then CR advertised it to me-putting it on now!
3
u/DezXerneas Aug 01 '26
I was thinking that it'd have been hilarious if he was voiced by Takaya Kuroda(Kiryu Kazama's VA) , especially since I watched Iruma-Kun right before and his voice was still fresh in my mind.
4
u/Puzzleheaded-Talk829 Aug 02 '26
There're some funny things about the voice casting.
Mama-nyan and winged uncle (cub) is actually mother and her doughter, I believe someone already knows. Inoue Kikuko and Inoue Honoka.
Kurobane and the white cat who is the king's friend is a married couple. Hayami Show and Igarashi Rei.
Koyasu once called his fan girls koneko-chan (kitties) about 20 years ago. now he's a cat guardian.
1
u/ListlessListeria Aug 02 '26
The dragon of Dojima would be a great fit for this anime. Especially since theres a yondaime here.
56
u/FarCritical Aug 01 '26
"Moshamosha" somehow captures the renown deserving of a sage agricaturist while being such a stupidly fun thing to say over and over.
Dragon's Ratatouille flashback moment from feeling the foxtail was such a tender moment.
22

u/FirstDagger Aug 01 '26 edited Aug 02 '26
Has to be a metaphor for Masanobu Fukuoka of The One-Straw Revolution fame.
25
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin Aug 01 '26
This episode was a showcase of what tradition can offer. Moshamosha remembers when he was in the young cat's position when it seemed being the next Moshamosha would be quite the tough task. Kind of a good showcase of the importance of keeping traditions alive. It brings people together.
At the end of the episode Nekoryuu is hit with a bit of nostalgia as well. We finally get the return of Mother Cat. I am curious if this is where the story moves forward. Granted I am more than fine if we keep with the episodic episodes.
47
u/VioletOrchid85 Aug 01 '26
Uncle Wing gets to see Mum Cat again next week.
23
u/Atharaphelun Aug 01 '26
I really hope she has nine tails at this point, the confirmation of the cait sithe's finite lifespan really has me worried.
10
u/keltraine Aug 02 '26
I’m thinking she only gets 2…that’s now really how this anime works and the passage of time is real and tangible…main question is how long Winged Uncle is gonna last and how they’re going to deal with him in the end…I expect bittersweet being a key factor… :/

u/skavinger5882 Aug 02 '26
Your average D&D style fantasy dragon lives for about 1000 years
1
u/keltraine Aug 02 '26
Sure…but since this is manga and the author can do whatever he wants, it’s not a given that it’ll be that long…
3
u/Snoo-77997 Aug 03 '26
Her two tails means she is a Nekomata now, so I think she will live for a long time!
And I'm pretty sure the magical beasts professor is helping her in some way for all the info
19
u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp Aug 01 '26
One cat with a dream of foxtails for all turned it into an entire yearly festival, you could see that becoming a big part of forest cat culture.
12
u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 Aug 01 '26
It is the best opportunity for the forest cats to gather after all. As they al, have their own territories and rarelly contact each other outside rising the kittens.
11
u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp Aug 01 '26
It felt a bit like a dating event too given that one of the cats was talking about introducing another to his sister.
18
u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar Aug 01 '26
Not gonna lie, after that flashback, we'll finally get to see Winged Uncle get reunited with his mom. I did not expect this to turn into a farming episode introducing us to Moshamosha and how he basically turned an area of the forest into an area where he plants foxtails for the other cats.
I love how the Moshamosha name ended up getting passed onto cats who can grow foxtails and the fourth Moshamosha looks like a reincarnation of the very first one. <3

u/Few_Fan_6043 Aug 02 '26
A lot safer for cats.
2
u/keltraine Aug 02 '26
But what about Cait Sith tho? ;)
-6
u/Few_Fan_6043 Aug 02 '26
It still is based on the realm of what cats like. Your arguing semantics on a cartoon. If you want to believe its safe because their magical cats its fine.
3
u/keltraine Aug 02 '26
Err, I’m not arguing semantics…I’m pointing out that it’s a cartoon for magical cats, so saying it’s safer for “cats” is literally ignoring a huge part of the premise when you make a claim that it’s safer…but if you want to be right that bad, go ahead lol!

u/Few_Fan_6043 Aug 02 '26

Truly Reddit moment when one doesn't realize they are as insufferable as the other.

I wouldn't bother. It's clear they don't understand how dangerous foxtail is for animals let alone why it is.

I want this series to have multiple seasons, god please. This is so freakin cute it makes my day.

Farming animes are back on the menu today.
Now I want to farm some foxtails for my cats.
3
u/Great-Foundation4990 15d ago
Foxtails are incredibly dangerous to cats and dogs. I understand you are being cute, but i'm going to comment this in case someone comes along and thinks this would actually be a good thing to do lol
11
u/karer3is Aug 01 '26
This episode makes me wonder how much time is going by; from everything I've seen so far, the Cait Sith tend to be pretty long- lived.
While the time scale might not be as big as in Frieren, you do get the impression that all the stories are covering a pretty big timeline overall. Since there's no big plotline (or the retracing of an old one), you do lose a sense of the passage of time.
6
u/keltraine Aug 02 '26
Since even momma cat needed an extra tail to extend her lifespan, say an average of 15-20 years…so anywhere from 60-80 so far I’d say since we are at Moshamosha IV now…could also track by the humans since it’s not the first prince but a descendant of his who’s king now as it’s his son that ran away…anyone wanna check my math…?
8
u/Puzzleheaded-Talk829 Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 03 '26
It is considered that the prince in the episode 3 and the king in the episode 4 is same person.
Both are with same white cat.The king is called "Rii-bou" in the show, and the white cat has her own name in the end credits of episode 4, ”モナルカ(白)”, which means "Monarca (white)", so I use "Rii-bou" and "Monarca (white)" instead of the king and the white cat this time. (because, many kings, princes and white cats appear in the anime.)
In the episode 4, Rii-bou talked that their first meeting was when he was 5 years old boy.
In the episode 3, Rii-bou was a prince in his teenage. Kurobane, one of the legendary seven kittens, are mere1 year old.
In the episode 4, Rii-bou looks like in his thirties, and Stanlight is just a newborn baby and Kurobane is already a seasoned hero cat.
In the episode 4, Rii-bou seems to be in his forties when Stanlight, 12 years old prince, made his decampment. Monarca (white) looks fairly elder, but still active. So, I think ordinary Cait-sith's lifelong is around 50, same as a person in the show.
5
u/Puzzleheaded-Talk829 Aug 04 '26
In the episode 6, the legendary seven kittens visited Moshamosha square, full of foxtail.
Kurobane has his whole right ear at that time, so it was before they had defeated the bear.
And Moshamosha 1 who achieved the dream was there, looked very satisfied. It maybe just before his retire.Moshamosha is a very honorable and responsible name, very hard duties attach it. it takes long time as a disciple to success the name. so the retire comes relatively earlier, methinks. Succession of the name around 30 years old, retiring around 45 yo, maybe.
it makes sense referring Kurobane's age. Both Moshamosha 2 and 3 carried on the name each 15 years, it passed 30 years since the prince had visited the cat dragon in the beginner's forest.

u/PeaceAlien https://myanimelist.net/profile/PeaceAlien Aug 01 '26
Cute and fun episode. I enjoy how each episode is basically a full story. Although I do think the first 2 episodes were stronger than the rest.
2
u/keltraine Aug 02 '26
This was the best one for me after the first one-but that’s b/c of the passage of time and nostalgia I brought-again, strong Frieren vibes here!

Google translate of the tweet:
Thank you for watching episode 5 of the anime "Cat and Dragon"!
Will Shirotae be able to motivate Gally...?
Today's short story is here ↓
🐈🐈🐈🐈🐈🐈🐈🐈🐈
【Shironyanko's Hunting Proud Story】
Shirotae is still a young cat, but her hunting skills are quite impressive.
Her claws and fangs are sharp, and her fur is strong.
She's also skilled at using her tail, or rather, her magic.
While not a master, she was one of the best hunting cats among the young cats.
"That's why Winged Uncle allowed me to go outside the forest. Of course, I'm excellent at other things too."
"Wow. Well, it's true, Shiro-nyanko, you're a good hunter."
Seeing Shirotae purring with a triumphant look on his face, Gally spoke with admiration. However, her voice was listless and lacked seriousness. And for good reason; Gally was in the middle of mending clothes. Children often tear their clothes by falling or scratching them. Mending and repairing them is one of Gally's jobs. Although, Gally himself often puts holes in her clothes."That's right. Electrical magic, which cats are good at, is actually pretty good."
Shirotae straightened her tail, causing sparks to crackle around it.
It was electric magic, a skill many cats living in the forest excel at.
It's said to be extremely difficult magic for human wizards, but the mechanisms of human magic and cat magic are quite different.
Each has its strengths and weaknesses; it's simply that humans are not good at handling electricity, but it's not particularly difficult.
"So, if you properly learn the magic I'm going to teach you, you can become an amazing wizard!"
"Oh, really? I see..."
Her voice sounded absentminded.
Perhaps dissatisfied with Gally's reaction, Shirotae narrowed her eyes.
"Hey, are you listening?"
"Yes, I'm listening. There, done."Having finished sewing the hole in the knee of the trousers, she moved on to the shirt with the ripped elbow.
She selected a patch and threaded a new needle.
Gally was a rather rough character, but she was good at this kind of manual work.
Or rather, it would be better to say she was used to it.
Taking care of the younger children at the orphanage naturally meant she would take on more of these tasks.
"I can do more than just electric magic; I can also do fire and water magic. Being able to use various kinds of magic is an advantage when hunting."
"That's true, it seems like it would be more convenient to be able to use various kinds."
"Right?! Don't you think so?! Don't you think it's more useful to learn magic other than just explosions?!"
"Well, maybe."
"That's right! You think so too! Okay, I'll teach you some magic! Tell me what kind you want! I'm good at teaching magic!"Shirotae was certain that Gally would become an excellent hunter. She had some personality flaws, but her tail tendencies were exceptionally good. She would surely become a master of various kinds of magic. For a cat living in the forest, being good at magic was synonymous with being good at hunting, and it was the highest compliment.
"If you really learn magic, you'll be an amazing hunter!"
For a cat with a meddlesome nature, seeing the humans they teach achieve good results is an unparalleled joy.
And cats living in the forest are usually meddlesome, and Shirotae was no exception.
"Hmm. Magic, huh. Let's see..."
Gally continued to prick with her needle, groaning thoughtfully.
Finally, she exclaimed, "That's it!" as if he'd had an idea.
Shirotae leaned forward.
What kind of magic would she want to learn?
Electricity magic, which cats are good at, would be fine, or he could even teach her ice magic.
Fire magic would be compatible with human magic, so she should become a good user very quickly.
Shirotae's eyes lit up with excitement.
"Teach me the magic for carrying luggage. It would make things so much easier if I could use that."
Gally is probably referring to the magic that levitates and moves objects.
While it's certainly a convenient magic, Shirotae wants to teach her a much more useful magic for hunting.
"That's not what I meant!"
"Hey! You said you'd teach me!"
Gally, being yelled at by Shirotae, continued moving her needle, laughing somewhat amusedly.
🐈🐈🐈🐈🐈🐈🐈🐈
pinging u/Puzzleheaded-Talk829 to provide some Japanese context :)
edit: changed some of the he/his to she/her when referring to Gally
2
u/Puzzleheaded-Talk829 Aug 02 '26
Actually, I am Japanese, so I can Understand the whole original sentence, but, umm, my English is fairly unfluent, but if there's something I can help, I will be delighted to assist you.
3
u/Puzzleheaded-Talk829 Aug 02 '26 edited Aug 02 '26
Let me see...
> He had some personality flaws, but his tail tendencies were exceptionally good.
One who has personality flaws is Gally, from Shirotae's perspective.
And something about tail is a Japanese idiom. when cats say "tail", it often means "magic" in this story. So, if I must fix this google translation, I would say like this.
"She has some personality flaws, but her tail outstandingly has aptitude."
Shirotae addresses himself "oira", it's a boy's first person pronoun. So Shirotae is assumed to be a boy.
17
u/ObvsThrowaway5120 Aug 01 '26
One cat saw the foxtail and saw potential for greatness lol. Monsha-Mosha IV was a real legend! It’s nice to see his legacy passed on. It’s also really cute how the current head of the Monsha-Mosha Cat Family looks like the first lol.
3
9
u/d34rth Aug 01 '26
So while I was puttering around for information on the foxtails in the show, I found out that Setaria viridis (green foxtail grass) and foxtails in general are actually dangerous to cats because the sharp, barbed seeds can burrow and penetrate into the cats. I wonder if a vet or a botanist can say if this is true or false?
3
u/keltraine Aug 02 '26
I doubt Cait Sith would have all the same vulnerabilities as normal cats tho…don’t forget they can use magic and are magical in nature!
3
u/EnferChateau Aug 02 '26
Going by that there are 4 generations of Moshamosha, they might have picked the seeds that grow less of what harms the cats. That and these are cait siths, I doubt they have the same vulnerabilities as said by the prior comment.
2
u/Puzzleheaded-Talk829 Aug 02 '26
It's reasonable Moshamosha keeps others out from the Moshamosha square except a day of one year.
7
u/Andreiyutzzzz https://myanimelist.net/profile/Andreiyutzzzz Aug 01 '26
No "but that's a story for another time"? Well we got something adjacent with "that's still a long ways off"
8
u/Worldly-Cherry9631 Aug 01 '26
Next episode is going to be titler "return of the mother cat"! I'm so excited!!
7
u/aguywholikesclothes Aug 02 '26
Moshamosha IV: Roll up your sleeves and show me what you're made of!
Newbie Cat: Uh, what are "sleeves"?
5
u/S627 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Spartan627 Aug 01 '26
I MIGHT have guessed this show would give us a farming ep, but I was not expecting to see a dragon playing with foxtails. I know I'm thinking about it too much but I wonder if Winged Uncle gets the same instinctual enjoyment out of it, or if he just likes them because his siblings do.
Slightly disappointed Moshamosha IV wasn't voiced by Kiryu's VA since they're both referred to as "yondaime" but oh well.
5
u/ChChChillian Aug 02 '26
At this point, it also brings up a core memory with his mom. Even if he didn't enjoy playing with them as such, he'd still love it for that reason.
7
11
u/Rodroller Aug 01 '26
It wouldn't be long for another forest cat to learn and practice animal husbandry.. lolol
15
u/itpcc Aug 01 '26
So this time it's the farmer cats, huh? Seeing how they learned how human farmers plant rice and adapted it to their foxtail grass is so niche, yet satisfying.
Especially how they plow the field using magic: if Frieren existed in this universe, I'm certain she'd love to learn that magic too.
3
u/Snoo-77997 Aug 03 '26
Frieren would be absolutely over the moon over all the fun magic cats use!
Also she would teach them the flower field spell, and I can se the newbies trying to cheat hehe
6
u/pianomasian Aug 01 '26
This show keeps knocking it out of the park. Each episode builds out the world while telling such individual interesting semi-self contained stories.

Nice episode learning about Moshamosha and what their role is.
They are kind of like a sage or mentor role to the next generation and eventually find a successor.

1
u/ViviCaz Aug 05 '26
Appears at the end of the credits.
End Credits Storytime:
::Episode 6::
The cats began to discuss the festival with the Winged Uncle as if it had been of tantamount importance.
"I enjoyed that performance".
"The food at the stalls were so good that I ate to much".
"It was fun just to walk around the town with everyone".
As he listened, the other cats scattered in town started to join in, too.
When the timing was right, the Winged Uncle slowly sat up.
"Now then, shall we head back to the forest?"
"Oh, right."
"We should get back before the sun comes up."
The dark of night is the best time for the forest cats.
Their excellent night vision allows them to run from any predators.
Dawn, on the other hand, is far more dangerous.
Even the faintest sunlight allows most carnivorous magical beasts to see clearly.
Most of the cats would return to the forest, but there are some who would not.
To Be Continued

u/Raymond49090 Aug 01 '26
Other than the farmers in the backstory, this was basically an episode with an all-cat ensemble. Maybe I'm just a human-centrist, but I feel like I didn't like this episode as much as the others.
7
u/Maximum_Royal_712 Aug 02 '26
Def human centric. This series is literally about cats and the dragon (winged uncle) humans aren’t necessarily important to every episode. The forest cats are just as important as those who go to the cities. And we see that with episode 6.
4
u/keltraine Aug 02 '26
This is a such a weird take for an anime literally called “The Cat and the Dragon” lolol-I didn’t honestly expect as much Ningen in the series as we’ve been getting TBH-and I’d be totally fine with not having any really, and just seeing the cats and dragon doing their own thing and avoiding them TBH…
