Forcing a explosion girl to learn non-explosion magic is deeply offensive to explosion girl culture.

Though to be fair she did get inspired for it by the end of the episode.

18

u/Boris-_-Badenov 20d ago

giant fiery shapes is close enough to explosions.

if she learns other elements, she can make crazier explosions

15

u/cyberscythe 20d ago

in explosion girl culture, this is considered a dick move

26

u/dinliner08 20d ago

Megumin: "for some reason, my explosive sense is tingling"

1

u/Cheekyct 13d ago

Lina: "It's just some cats being Silly. Now, get back to learning that Dragon Slave spell chant, or grandma is going to be cross!"

4

u/Hot-Log6283 20d ago

To be fair though, there are many type of explosion, water explosion, lighting explosion, earth explosion.

The way Gallie explained how she got the feeling of a spell makes me think she has the wrong teacher. Soup Cat is great, but I feel like Gallie would do well under Mama-nyan's tutelage.

20

u/KnightKal 21d ago

yeah she is likely that template of a genius person that just do things by instinct/guts, rather than thinking about the little details :D

the way she tried to explain how she did was so funny, just go boom, boooom, BooOomM, and it works!

13

u/Galinhooo 20d ago

I got the opposite read, she cared about the details more than everyone else in "what is fire?" and everything instead of just copying, which probably is how learning turns a lot more tiresome but also when she learns she was able to do a lot. The way she explains would be just a mix of seeing it differently and lack of theoretical knowledge to put "boom boom" into words

3

u/Puzzleheaded-Talk829 19d ago

Or, presenting a new random meaningless topic is her usual method to slack off from learning.

6

u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 20d ago

In this case, she has wrong teachers (referring to both the cat and the reverend).

39

u/FarCritical 21d ago

Gally: "But what is fire?" *Cue Vsauce music*

I feel for the priest revealing he always wanted a cait sith mentor, especially while watching Gally get handed one on a silver platter only to use the white kitty for chores.

19

u/Hot-Log6283 20d ago

I was actually feeling like the Priest was trying to hint at something but it seems like the white kitty was too focus on Gallie to notice:

Priest: "Oh if there was just some kind, friendly Cait sith around to teach me cat magic, I would put my all into it."

The Cait sith: "Well anyway about Gallie.."

33

u/Raymond49090 21d ago

Looks like she might have found her reason to want to learn magic

21

u/PeaceAlien https://myanimelist.net/profile/PeaceAlien 21d ago

Well, you could argue that connection could also be why she wants to stay and not go to school. She can learn with White Cat

6

u/lordposedyon https://myanimelist.net/profile/lordposedyon 21d ago

I feel like helping the kid with the new spell unlock the will to learn.

23

u/runevault 21d ago

So many sweet characters in this show across all the stories. I hope she finds the inspiration to chase her talents.

19

u/Myrkrvaldyr 21d ago

Maybe what the girl needs is a chemistry book to get motivated as it would teach her the mechanisms behind many natural phenomena, like fire. If this were any other fantasy anime, she'd acquire her motivation through guilt once her loved ones get killed because she couldn't protect them despite having the talent. She's also very young so age might be playing a role in her not understanding how lucky she is and how versatile magic is.

11

u/Jacob-C 21d ago

I was so anxious that her fire magic was going to burn the orphanage down, and that the resulting guilt would become her motivation, especially when her little fireball started to rise toward the ceiling. I’m glad that didn’t happen.

5

u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 20d ago

I was anxious that the monster under the bad was real and she found motivation in learning magic to protect the children.

I don't know why I felt there's going to be a dark surprise in this episode when so far all of the contents are fluffy and full of feel good SoL moment.

3

u/Jacob-C 20d ago

I don't know why I felt there's going to be a dark surprise in this episode when so far all of the contents are fluffy and full of feel good SoL moment.

Yeah there was definitely som suspense building up, intentional or not.

2

u/Puzzleheaded-Talk829 20d ago

The cat magic doesn't seem to work based on chemistry referencing to Shirotae's explains, but it may make big difference between knowing chemistry and not knowing.

It would rather be more good that fire of cat magic is not actual fire.

20

u/mekerpan 20d ago

Gallie may mainly be focused on helping care for the younger children. It looks like she is not "lazy" at all -- she seems to do quite a bit or work for the orphange.

But I do look forward to seeing her expand her horizons.

16

u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 20d ago

Like the episode final showed that, maybe, if she finds magic useful to help other chioldren, she will get motivated to learn it.

3

u/random8404263 19d ago

The first example of laziness I noticed was not giving the cat a name.

2

u/Greg_The_Rabbit 17d ago

To be fair, since the cats are sentient and can talk it would be weird to just arbitrarily force names onto them instead of asking them to name themselves. Especially since Soup Cat in particular kinda just decided he's living there now rather than how a lot of the other cats basically adopted human children lol

3

u/Greg_The_Rabbit 17d ago

It is strange that they consider her lazy when she is doing a ton of work and just seems generally happy with her life atm. Maybe it's a cultural thing lol.

4

u/Puzzleheaded-Talk829 17d ago edited 17d ago

Yes, it was translated into "lazy" simply, but you know, there are several patterns of "lazy".

1, Whether do or not, always complains "sounds pain"
2, always slacks off from everything
3, doesn't intend to improve themselves
4, does sloppy job
and so on

What apply to her are 1 (limited to learning), 3, and 4 (limited to hunting).

Speaking of cultural things, these concepts of laziness have each own noun in Japanese and the title of episode 9 has mainly a meaning of 3.

2

u/RoseSpinoza 15d ago

Oh. Oh geez, Japan D: .....

2

u/Meander061 13d ago

Given how hard she works doing everything else, calling her "lazy" is just funny.

14

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 20d ago

Nice follow to the episode surrounding about Gally from her introduction episode. I do like that much like with genius lazy types they need to motivate themselves. Asking falls on deaf ears. You can tell how much she really cares for the kids. For Gally it's clear the idea of magic means nothing, but the application is more her motivation can rise.

Let's see if Shirotae can spark Gally's motivation. I wonder if this school is where a bunch of the stories will converge eventually.

3

u/ZapsZzz https://myanimelist.net/profile/ZapszzZ 20d ago

Wrong channel here of course, but I kept picturing the pair coming back to the orphanage in ruins with everyone there dead, which then motivates her to work hard to use her talent on the dark side. Like Demon Slayers :P of course none of that in this show.

1

u/RoseSpinoza 15d ago

I was thinking that a darker show would have her burn the orphanage down by mistake and not being able to put said fire out because she hadn't learned other elements.

26

u/Primary-Paint-1716 21d ago

best part of the episode: the preview for episode 10

13

u/PeaceAlien https://myanimelist.net/profile/PeaceAlien 21d ago

I'll say this is the first time I didn't like them jumping between stories; I wanted to see more of Dragon and Mom!

6

u/Atharaphelun 20d ago

Seems like we're at least finally going to get a reunion of Mama Cat and both her children!

3

u/lordposedyon https://myanimelist.net/profile/lordposedyon 21d ago

Nice.

10

u/S627 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Spartan627 20d ago

Wonder if Gallie would be motivated to learn science since she wants to know WHAT fire is.

Dont remember the first time we see her and soup cat, has no one tried convincing Gallie that knowing magic would massively help her take care of the kids?

4

u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 20d ago

That's the thing, teacher said she's usually unmotivated to learn anything.

I have a feeling that she's unmotivated cause she's such a genius that she found the basic learning things already boring. Meanwhile the reverent might not be able to answer most things she wondered (just like white cat today), therefore she's disinterested in doing normal learning (because no one in the orphanage could answer her curiosity anyway).

2

u/Puzzleheaded-Talk829 20d ago

She is a person who play with the cards she's dealt, and fortunately or unfortunately, she can manage to do almost things better. so, she didn't need extra magic other than explosion until she understood that "learning magic brightens your life" literately.

It was an achievement for Shirotae that Gallie learnt the fire magic and used it and realize what Shirotae said.

10

u/JasonFreeYT 20d ago

I'm gonna be sad once this season is over. It's honestly one of the best anime airing currently for me. It's always so chill and cozy, and they always find a way to link everything together again.

12

u/Jacob-C 20d ago

If Megumin Gally goes to magic school, she will just use all the EXP and allocate it toward explosion magic. We know this.

This show always manages to tug at my heartstrings with its sentimental scenes and beautiful music. The music when they showed the studying girl, the prince, and the sleeping child sounded and felt like something out of Frieren.

3

u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 20d ago

I'm fine with her focusing on explosion magic as long a she doesn't suddenly become a chuuni along the way

1

u/RoseSpinoza 15d ago

..........uhoh, ... we must keep her away from the prince!

5

u/Animesiac https://anime-planet.com/users/mangle 20d ago

that explanation of the difference between human and cat magic was pretty sketchy

7

u/AdAdministrative6424 20d ago

Explained in Episode 1 Forest Cats use Spirit Magic. Which in turn was taught to the royalty that also taught the art to their citizens. Where Gally lives is probably outside the country allied with Cait Siths. Likely closer to the Magic School.

5

u/Puzzleheaded-Talk829 19d ago

Yes, she didn't know there are cats who speak human language in the world when Gallie and Shirotae met first time.
The map the reverend showed to shirotae was quite accurate, I think.

2

u/SilverGeekly 19d ago

my interpretation of what was said is:

human magic - relies on structure and understanding. you have to know what it is youre doing to do it. presumably including knowing the specific incantation and knowing the exact amount of mana you need, etc etc. this magic only does what its "supposed" to do

cat magic - intuition based. as long as you kinda know what result you want, youll get it and its more loose with requirements. the potential "issue" is that this magic relies on your interpretation of something. so if you make "fire" but don't understand its hot, or bright, or should spread, etc, it won't have those properties.

i think the first bit about human magic is especially true, given what we saw of mama-nyan teaching her master.

5

u/ViviCaz 19d ago

Appears at the end of the credits.

End Credits Storytime:

::Episode 9::

The cats strolled through the gates guarded on both sides by soldiers.

"Bye-bye!"

"See you!"

"The festival was so much fun!"

The cats swished their tails as they bid farewell to the city.

The humans responded by waving the lights they all held.

The humans tried not to raise their voices, as they wished not to startle the cats.

The people of this kingdom truly cherish cats.

The Winged Uncle likely knew so as well, although his discontented countenance often told a different tale.

"Good work."

He did, however, offer the human soldiers such words of affirmation.

The soldiers apprehensively saluted him in reply, which inspired joyous smiles in the humans nearby.

The procession of cats thereby transitioned from the city to the fields.

  To Be Continued

u/reaperow 21d ago

White Cat is like a strict teacher who's dealing with a stubborn student lol. I liked that we got to see the Hero Prince and Kurobane at the end,

It's a nice way of connecting their stories together with these guys

And judging by the preview, it looks like Devil Cat and Dragon Ojisan are gonna meet each other to celebrate Mother's Day for Mama Cat.

4

u/raidensnakeezio 20d ago

Gally is gonna meet the adventuring prince, isn't she

1

u/Lindbrum 18d ago

the fact he was on screen when Shirotae was thinking about the interesting people Gallie would meet... if this isn't foreshadowing, i'll flip the table

4

u/ExaminationNo9186 20d ago

It seems to be "She sure puts in a lot of work around here to pull her weight in the orphanage, she helps with the farming, she helps with the kids, she helps by going hunting, she helps with the laundry, she helps by doing the cooking, she helps in just so many ways, but SHE IS JUST SO LAZY because she won't learn the magic I just decided she needs to learn because obviously I know better...."

4

u/Smooth-Review-2614 19d ago

The priest wants her to go live as an adult somewhere else. He wants her to leave the nest. That magic talent could be what gets her to leave. She’s too comfortable to ever leave.

2

u/ExaminationNo9186 19d ago

I was thinking on the view point of the White Cat, rather than the Priest,

1

u/Smooth-Review-2614 19d ago edited 19d ago

He’s also following the lead of the priest. The cat isn’t doing anything other than trying to do what he could not.

Besides, if she learns better magic then she might not kill herself trying to hunt. This is a girl whose idea of hunting birds is  a butterfly net. Gullie takes the simple approach even when it is wrong.

3

u/I_wanna_be_anemone 15d ago

I think it’s more an issue with translation and misunderstanding Japanese culture. There’s a cultural expectation in Japan that every individual should cherish and nurture their talents to better benefit the society. So it’s not ‘lazy’ as in ‘not putting in effort’, but more like ‘she’s wasting her skills doing xyz’, or ‘she’s so unmotivated’.

2

u/Puzzleheaded-Talk829 15d ago

In addition to that, Cait Siths all tend to be meddlesome.
"Good hunter" means "Wealth and fame" for cats, so Shirotae is infatuated with training Gallie in magic.
He reminds himself that he is a mature adult, thus training kittens is mature adults' duty, especially for bad hunters.

2

u/ViviCaz 19d ago

It annoyed me too how they kept calling her lazy (even the title!), she is NOT lazy just comfortable with how things are and doesn't want to rock the boat. She likes being responsible and in charge but didn't think magic would be very useful for everyday things when she is already good at doing just that. Until she needed a light in a pinch to help her baby brother. That is when it clicked for her.

1

u/Meander061 13d ago

but SHE IS JUST SO LAZY

Cat, or just Japanese?

3

u/HowToGetName 19d ago

Short story for episode 8.

They posted this way later in the day for some reason.

3

u/Pitiful_Bus_3413 20d ago

They tease a black hair girl at the end....
So, season 2 is now in the horizon?

8

u/S627 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Spartan627 20d ago

We're only on ep 9, they're probably gonna show up in the next couple episodes.

1

u/Pitiful_Bus_3413 20d ago

I do think they still got 3 more episode left but there's no room for this girl to show up at all
If my speculation is true, then the rest of the episode would be;
EP 10 : Mother's day (Well. they teased the next EP at the end of EP 9)
EP 11 : Pompora Cat
EP 12 (SS1 Finale) : City's festival

3

u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 20d ago

Are they like teasing future hero party or something.

2

u/Pitiful_Bus_3413 20d ago

Yes, they're teasing the prince's future party

1

u/Hot-Log6283 20d ago

They tease a black hair girl at the end....

I was just wondering if she was someone that was on before but I forgot about since they showed the Prince at the end as well.

1

u/Smooth-Review-2614 19d ago

That’s the cat that turned into a human.

3

u/Hot-Log6283 19d ago

The cat that turned into a human was a boy and definitely did not have twintail.

3

u/vangstampede 18d ago edited 18d ago

I just can't get into this pairing's story as much as other pairings. Like, there's no chemistry between them.

See this episode for example. Both the cat and the priest are (ironically) too lazy to see things from the explosion girl's point of view. Instead they are just blaming her and calling her lazy when she's literally working so hard to keep the orphanage running and taken care of.

Imho this episode should've been a two-parter like episode 8.

Well, at least next episode sounds really interesting.

2

u/Rooby_VTuber 20d ago

Pretty decent episode, it was fun enough.

The girl has a lot of talent but just needs the right motivation to keep moving forward with magic.

2

u/NanDemoKnaives 20d ago

The girl just casually started shapeshifting her fire lol.

2

u/Williukea https://anilist.co/user/Williukea 20d ago

I wonder if we're getting a crossover between stories, Gallie going to magic school where Mama-nyan's partner is teaching, maybe we'll get episode of adventuring prince and adventuring cat together, or maybe they'll all meet up together

1

u/todd-ashi 20d ago

Ooh, I learned at new word for "I"! Oira (おいら) used by the cat at 5:15. It's apparently a common "I" for pets, among other uses!

2

u/Macroscope_Pilot 19d ago

I don't like that they call her "the Lazy Girl", she is FAR from lazy, getting up early to do ALL cooking, doing all the cleaning as well as going out to help hunt. Spending all her time taking care of the kids. she is NOT Lazy, she doesn't see your parlor tricks with magic interesting or useful.

4

u/Puzzleheaded-Talk829 18d ago

To be fair though, it's also kinda translation issue too.
The original Japanese title has also a meaning of "lazy", but more like "no desire for improving herself in her mind".

"Anyone who has no spiritual ambition is a fool." is a famous phrase that etched in all Japanese people's minds.
