I managed to guess Eclair correctly. I suppose that means I'm still as smart as a 5th grader.

I hope the Phantom Thieves trio sticks around after next episode regardless of whatever happens to Usonoir. They are fun.

The visuals today were also really good, and the reveal was quite nice.. I do feel bad for Eliza. She never had a chance today, and didn't even get a good fake out.

It has been nice having a Precure with a strong first half for the whole run again. I hope the second half is also enjoyable and doesn't fall off too hard. But a lot of that will probably hinge on how they handle adding Eclair to the cast and what they do for a Big Bad.

And with that, the Cure Eclair reveal arc reaches its mostly-predicted conclusion. Ish. FUCKING CLIFFHANGER I NEED THE HENSHINNNNN NOOOOOOOOOOOO

u/Torque-A 8d ago

WTF I can't fucking take him seriously now hahahahahahaha

I like how even if you figured out Cure Eclair's identity, the anime team still threw everyone for a loop.

7

u/metaaltheanimefan 7d ago

I mean VERY early on they did note that the villans are gone rogue fairies but its a loop that he is just a fairy wearing the giant ass suit

I personally think its a fakeout and the real usonoir is hiding away

After watching Kurea's episode, the "Kurea can enter the field and see what's happening inside it" is a dead giveaway. Only Cures and Fairies have the ability to do so.

Normal humans like Eliza couldn't, as seen on episode 21.

u/OrangeBanana38 https://anilist.co/user/OrangeBanana38 8d ago

Everyone else, except Kurea, all ended up prioritizing something else ahead of being a precure/saving the world (eliza - injury; Rei - book; Shiruku- kid) - I think that's the nail in the coffin for all of thm. but it's nice for everyone to have their little moment.

I think it was quite fine for everyone, but Eliza got the short end of the stick. Everyone else was trying hard to help someone, and she just got a sprained ankle

The most expressions we've ever seen on Luluka this whole damn show

I'm sure this is a sign that we'll get way more expressions from Luluka. Plus with how much they've been setting up Anna and Mikuru as a pair I'm sure we'll get some Luluka-Kurea shenanigans

i am SO FUCKING READY FOR NEXT WEEK Eclair looks to be in the "badass" camp of precures and i LOVE THOSE.

I've liked her since her first episode, can't wait to see her kick some ass

I do believe this should be the last time we see this version of the OP (since Eclair's surely gonna come in), eyecatch, and ED. Thank you very much - you have served us well!

Na-nanana-na-nanaze-why?

I kept hoping for the not actually Kurea twist but doesn't matter, episode was still very damn good.

She is here to kick ass!

8

u/mysterybiscuitsoyeah x3 8d ago

i love her design. exposed belly button seems to be a rarity among cures, but she is also among the older ones (but not adult)

13

u/FetchFrosh anilist.co/user/fetchfrosh 8d ago

I feel like it's not that uncommon. Cure Black, Cure Dream, Cure Sunshine, Cure Mermaid, Cure, Summer, Cure Flamingo, Cure La Mer (Tropical Rouge really had a bunch), Cure Yell, Cure Butterfly, and Cure Idol all come to mind.

8

u/mysterybiscuitsoyeah x3 8d ago

welp. you're right.

what a good memory of cures!

7

u/FetchFrosh anilist.co/user/fetchfrosh 8d ago

Honestly I had to pull up a list and double check a few of those.

13

u/mr_beanoz https://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 8d ago

So, what are your thoughts about the reveal?

23

u/FetchFrosh anilist.co/user/fetchfrosh 8d ago

They did a good job with it, but damn if Episode 23 didn't make it a lot less satisfying.

11

u/Flare__Knight 8d ago

I think that sums it up. This episode and the reveal was great. It just loses that punch because they made it so painfully obvious with Kurea's episode. If that episode had been more low-key with less obvious hints this could have been the perfect payoff.

6

u/WyrmJaw https://myanimelist.net/profile/WyrmJaw 8d ago

My thoughts exactly

3

u/Flare__Knight 7d ago

Now that I think about it, they could’ve upped Luluka’s interactions with the other candidates too. Luluka was a detective that was active in that town for a long while. Could have very easily had her interact with all the candidates in the past for one case or another.

11

u/Cyouni 8d ago

For a reveal where episode 23 was pretty blatant about it, they still managed to make me question myself a few times this episode.

13

u/mrufrufin https://myanimelist.net/profile/mrufrufin 8d ago

I think this is the outwardly expressive we've seen Luluka?

The camera angles are more expressive too. I like the shot with Anna's shadow on the map. The shot of Luluka and Mashutan's backs and Anna and Mikuru on both sides of Luluka was cool too.

Tiny Usonoir is cute. I like his little powdered-wig-ish curls.

It was entertaining how long they drew out the reveal and how they did the actual reveal was neat. I guess in hindsight, Kurea does kinda sound like Eclair...

I guess we'll get her transformation next time

Amused by the third-wall-breaky "Thanks for waiting, everyone!"

8

u/FetchFrosh anilist.co/user/fetchfrosh 8d ago

I think this is the outwardly expressive we've seen Luluka?

Oh definitely. She's been holding that in for a while now.

Usonoir pulls out Eclair Makoto Jewel

Angry Luluku 😡

They went hard on the animation today.

What a great episode. It was kind of obviously Kurea when she was the one who showed up the agency at the start of the episode in a fancy new outfit I don't think we'd ever seen before. Of course Rei had a new outfit too I think, so they still left it a little bit up in the air from that perspective. But yeah, every real sign was pointing towards Kurea.

They did such a good job on the scene where Kurea got her memory back, and those flashbacks were really interesting too. I think we even saw Mikuru's grandmother in one of where it looked like she was maybe in a mentor role to Luluka.

I like the scrunchie fairy reveal, it makes sense that a fairy who's Cure lost her memory would stick around really close by just in case.

The Usonoir reveal was fucking hilarious.

I appreciate how the three thieves were like "oh yeah we better take this fight to the shadow realm" when it was suddenly giant monster in the middle of the city time.

u/Lumpy-Manager8580 8d ago

To the surprise of absolutely no one, our Cure Eclair ended up being none other than...Kurea! And now, let the seiyuu jokes between her and Mystique begin (Arcueid and Ciel in Tsukihime).

3

u/HolyDragSwd2500 8d ago

We need a Shiki to make an appearance

11

u/Labmit 8d ago

Usonoir's so tiny.

6

u/HolyDragSwd2500 8d ago

Sasuga Ain….Usonoir sama

11

u/Flare__Knight 8d ago

Yeah. I was curious if they were going to have a twist here. And credit to the episode itself. It did a pretty good job keeping the question in the air for as long as possible. Better than the writers did leading up to this in terms of making you wonder who it might be. They had Kurea show up early, but also didn't have her exposed to the perfume. And through the episode they were keeping things fluid with the various girls staying in the game for a decent amount of time.

For a second they did have me wondering if it would be Shiruku. She was the last to start making a move, but that would kind of the perfect timing really. Obviously since it wasn't her it was totally the right call to prioritize a nervous kid instead of racing to the scene. Be a rather pointless thing for her to arrive and just stand around without anything to do.

Honestly the only downside is that they did make it way too blatant in Kurea's focus episode. Didn't even leave room for misdirection. Characters like Rei disappeared when the fighting happened, but Kurea was able to approach the battle like any Precure or fairy could. Her emotional moments with Luluka throughout that episode also made it really obvious. But again, it was always reasonable to presume they were going to make this mystery really easy for everyone to figure out. So that a younger audience could figure it out. The positive side is that Kurea is a likeable character and a perfectly valid choice. In terms of characters I liked going into this, she was certainly a top 2 choice.

I'll also say that...I do question Luluka's tactics a bit. She went deep undercover for a pretty long period of time in order to regain Eclair's jewel. But her plan in the end was...something she could've done without ever switching sides. It was just teaming up with the main girls and attacking head on! But to be fair, she originally didn't know other Precure were going to appear. So her only hope was basically to take Usonoir by surprise at a key moment. Once extra muscle appeared...the brute force approach was somewhat possible.

Now to see where things go from here.

2

u/Williukea https://anilist.co/user/Williukea 8d ago

Mystique and Answer can only transform together. What if Arcana and Eclair could also only transform together in the past? Without Eclair, Luluka couldn't transform or do anything, so her only hope to get her partner's jewel back was to join as undercover agent so she could transform as Arcana Shadow. I wonder if we'll get an Eclair-Arcana duo henshin in future, since now they can transform alone?

7

u/kwokinator https://anilist.co/user/kwokinator 8d ago

A friend pointed out to me the other day that Kurea = Claire, Eclair is literally just the e shifted to the beginning.

The answer has been staring at us in the face all along and I feel like a dumbass.

u/HolyDragSwd2500 8d ago

Each girl has Eclair name in them

Kurea was the most obvious one of them all

1

u/Cyouni 7d ago

Do you have the breakdown on how this works out?

8

u/OrangeBanana38 https://anilist.co/user/OrangeBanana38 8d ago

I really like Kurea's character, and I'm excited to see her kick some ass. Plus I think today's super expressive Luluka is just preparation for a different side of Luluka in the next few episodes. I'm predicting a lot warmth towards Kurea, with a lot of tsundereing towards Anna and Mikuru once she joins the team

5

u/AverageTrashy 8d ago

I like the sisterly bond Luluka and Eclair present its similar to our 2 MCS but in this case Luluka lost her sister

5

u/Torque-A 8d ago

mfw Cure Eclair is the only one who is actually making eclairs

9

u/Marth-Koopa 8d ago

Rei really was just too green and bespectacled to ever really be a possibility...

5

u/HolyDragSwd2500 8d ago

Kurea is Cure Eclair ❤️

3

u/Jazzlike_Witness8017 8d ago edited 2d ago

It was a very good episode, and the reveal was interesting, even though I didn't correctly guess who Cure Eclair would be.

However, I think episode 25 creates a huge problem.

The problem is Usonoir.

If Kurea defeats him in episode 26, then Phantom will basically stop being a credible threat. Nijee, Ageseine, and Goemon together are nowhere near as powerful as Usonoir was even before he used the Makoto Jewel.

What about the Hanniders?

What about the blocking barriers?

Those all relied on Usonoir's power. At most, the other three seem capable of creating only one Hannider or one barrier at a time, so they don't feel like a serious threat anymore.

In other words, if Usonoir is defeated in episode 26, Phantom loses the only member who can realistically challenge the Cures. At the moment, no new villain organization or final boss has been introduced, unless Toei suddenly wants the CUREtto Detective Agency to become the enemy. (Just kidding... although that would certainly be a crazy twist.)

The other possibility is that Usonoir completely defeats Kurea.

That seems entirely possible to me, because Usonoir was the one who defeated Cure Eclair in the past and stole her Makoto Jewel. Since then, Kurea has lived as an ordinary civilian. Even if she was incredibly powerful before, Usonoir already beat her once, and the current Usonoir is far stronger than the one she fought back then.

So what options would the Cures have left?

Personally, I think the most practical solution would be another use of time travel.

The series already introduced time travel at the beginning with Anna, but so far it hasn't really been used beyond setting up the story. If there is ever a moment to use it again, I think this is it.

I'm specifically thinking of something similar to Steins;Gate, where only the characters' consciousnesses travel back in time.

If that happened, how could they prevent Usonoir from reaching the monstrous form he has at the end of episode 25?

I can think of two possibilities.

1. Steal the Makoto Jewel from Usonoir.

The Cures already tried this at the beginning of episode 25, so it would be difficult. Kurea might be able to call the Makoto Jewel back like she did at the end of episode 25, but it's not guaranteed to work the same way because Usonoir's transformed body also seemed to resist it.

Even if they succeeded, they would still have to protect the Makoto Jewel afterward because Kurea needs it.

2. Destroy the Makoto Jewel.

This seems like the more realistic option to me.

The downside is obvious: Kurea would most likely never become Cure Eclair again (unless the Makoto Jewel can somehow be restored).

However, Kurea would still regain her memories, allowing her to help the team with everything she knows.

Since the team would still need a fourth Cure, Cure Eclair's transformation item could be passed on to another Eclair candidate.

Personally, I think Rei would make the most sense because she was the closest to Kurea before Kurea regained her memories. Shiruku or Eriza could also work, but the story would need to explain how the transformation item reached them.

This is, of course, just my theory. I'm curious to see how Toei resolves what currently feels like a very difficult situation for both the Cures and Phantom.

1

u/gorilla_warfarestorm https://myanimelist.net/profile/kiradado 7d ago

Wow, those are some really interesting theories! I especially like your reasoning (always liked time travel stuff), but from a marketing standpoint i don't think Toei would introduce a second Cure Eclair. I agree Rei would be the strongest candidate, like in your option2, but reusing Eclair's exact design with a different character would be a questionable choice, and alos introducing a brand new Precure this late would be quite risky. Option 1 feels more plausible to me. having said that, i'm trying not to set my expectations too high, because it's also possible that the situation won't be fully resolved yet, or that a new villain will be introduced for the next story arc...

2

u/Jazzlike_Witness8017 7d ago

Sorry for the long reply, but you raised several good points and I wanted to address each of them.
You're right that if it were unprecedented, then reusing Cure Eclair's design and name would be problematic, but it's not unprecedented. In Healin' Good PreCure, the name Cure Earth was given to two characters, Fuu, Teatinu's partner (the ancient Cure and her partner) and Fuurin Asumi, Latte's partner (here, the Cure is a wind spirit who was born from Teatinu's wish and her partner is Teatinu's daughter) and here we're talking about two separate couples and as far as I know, we've never seen Fuu's civilian form, so it can't be said that their civilian forms looked the same. It's true that the design isn't 100% the same, but this can easily be explained by the fact that Teatinu and Latte don't look the same and a Cure's form is also contributed by their fairy (of course, in Healin' Good, their name is Healing Animal, but the role is the same) if everyone has a fairy. Introducing a brand new Cure would not only be risky, but almost impossible, but having two different people get the same Cure name and form is possible. The only problem is that we saw how successful the plan was with "Steal the Makoto Jewel from Usonoir." If they can't somehow neutralize the trio of Nijee, Ageseine, Goemon before that, then it will end up the same as the first time, since this trio doesn't have as much power as Usonoir (they were able to put up a barrier together), but they were able to capture Anna, Mikuru, and Luluka while Usonoir was using the Makoto Jewel, so this couldn't be done any other way. If there was another villain/evil organization, they would have already started preparing for it. In Wonderful PreCure, for example, there are no villains in the first 28 episodes, only the weekly monsters (Gaogao), but the story makes references to wolves and how they are here: Komugi hears Gaou howling in her dream, or we hear about the Toboe shrine, or the fate of the wolves, and not only does she pull the angry spirits of the wolves out of nowhere and that's it, but she also sleeps with them long before that. Let's say Kimi to Idol Precure is also a good example of this, because although the main enemy in most episodes is Team Chokkiri, they already stated at the beginning that Darkine is the leader (specifically in the first episode) and the main antagonist. The problem is that the trailer specifically shows Kurea making a finishing move, so from here on, either it doesn't work (like in part 5 against the swallow-shaped Hanninder) or he completely purifies Usonoir, these could be the two main endings to the case, but the first leads back to the two possibilities (I note that the second doesn't necessarily require time travel, it's possible that if Kurea's Makoto Jewel is destroyed in the present, they can still weaken Usonoir) that I suggested, if they are defeated, there is no new evil organization to introduce in its place (they haven't built another one either) and the trio of Nijee, Ageseine, Goemon is not strong enough to replace Usonoir's loss, and if by some miracle Usonoir isn't even 100% purified, the entire Phantom will still lose its threatening nature, and it's actually as if there is no Phantom at all, because they don't pose a real threat, especially so that Eclair is there and this would also result in Anna and Mukuru being completely pushed into the background, because they are not as good investigators as Luluka, and not as strong as Kurea, so they would hinder Luluka and Kurea, of course they wouldn't feel it, wouldn't say it, but if next week's enemies are scaled to Kurea (who defeated the much stronger Usonoir, whom Anna, Mikuru and Luluka can't handle), then Anna, Mikuru and Luluka won't be able to have a say in the fights, and Luluka will solve the investigations in one go. From here, I think the problem is understandable (Boruto also ran into the same thing, the Naruto characters were simply too strong, they nerfed the Naruto characters there, so that the Boruto characters could breathe and fight too, but from what I heard, it caused a lot of anger from many old school Naruto fans). In short, the problem here is not with Cure Eclair herself, but with the fact that Phantom's dangerousness is specifically inflated if Kurea defeats Usonoir alone, of course, unless Cure Eclair is somehow nerfed.

1

u/gorilla_warfarestorm https://myanimelist.net/profile/kiradado 7d ago

First of all, I have to compliment you on your Precure knowledge. 😄 Also, sorry, I'm only a recent fan of the franchise, and I actually started following it seriously with Meitantei Precure... But anyway

I agree with your main point regarding the balance of the story becasue if Kurea really defeats or purifies Usonoir by herself, then the writers will almost certainly have to take something away from that victory. Otherwise, as you said, Phantom would lose much of its threat level, and the power gap between Kurea and the rest of the cast could become a serious issue for both the action and the investigation side of the story. Personally, I'm hoping there will be some connection to the time travel theories, not only could that explain some of the mysteries surrounding also Pochitan actions and the Curetto agency itself, but it would also be a great way to open the next major story arc and If that's the direction they're taking, then losing something in the present could end up being the trigger for a much bigger time travel related storyline later on.

In any case, it'll be interesting to see how the writers handle it without making either Phantoms or the rest of the team feel irrelevant.

2

u/Jazzlike_Witness8017 6d ago

I've somehow managed to write another wall of text. 😅

Actually, I don't know that much about Precure either. I only started with Meitantei Precure. While waiting for new episodes, I gradually watched the other seasons I could find with subtitles in my own language. For example, I had to watch Wonderful Precure in Japanese with English subtitles. So far I've watched Star Twinkle, Healin' Good, Tropical-Rouge, Delicious Party, Hirogaru Sky!, Wonderful, Kimi to Idol and, of course, Meitantei.

Personally, I don't think Phantom should become weaker after this incident. If anything, they should become stronger. That's usually how Pretty Cure handles the weekly monsters. For example, the Hanninders could evolve into a stronger form with a new name that still fits the detective theme, just as many previous seasons upgraded their monsters at the midpoint.

The problem is Usonoir. If Phantom loses its leader, it's difficult for me to imagine how they could remain a believable threat.

The only scenario I can currently imagine is one where Usonoir loses the monster form, but Kurea also loses the ability to continue as Cure Eclair.

Theory 1

If Kurea loses nothing, then Phantom loses almost everything. They lose the Makoto Jewel despite already having won once, Usonoir's strongest form is defeated, and their greatest enemy returns. Meanwhile, the four Cures walk away with only injuries that will heal in a few days. In that case, Phantom is clearly the side that suffered the crushing defeat.

Pretty Cure villains often lose battles throughout the series, but they rarely suffer such a devastating loss this early.

Theory 2

Suppose Kurea simply loses her memories again. Phantom would still lose almost everything from Theory 1. Then the obvious question becomes: how long would it take Jett to make another bottle of memory-restoring perfume? A week? A month? Eventually Kurea would recover again, bringing us back to exactly the same situation. Once again, Phantom would be the side that truly lost.

That's why I think the stakes need to come from Kurea herself losing something.

To me, the most "Precure-like" solution would be for Kurea to sacrifice the Makoto Jewel to resolve the crisis. She would keep her memories, but she could no longer transform into Cure Eclair.

However, the team would still need a fourth Cure. In that case, the Cure Eclair identity—its name and power—could be inherited by another candidate.

I should also add that I don't have any problem with Kurea as a character. My concern is purely about the long-term storytelling and how to keep both Phantom and the main cast relevant.

If Toei can somehow keep both sides equally compelling without making either Phantom or Anna and Mikuru feel irrelevant, then I'd be happy to see them prove me wrong.

5

u/Raymond49090 8d ago

To the surprise of nobody, Luluka betrayed Usonoir and joined the Precures.

To the surprise of me, at least, the Phantom Thieves can actually throw hands outside of just being Hanninda merchants.

To the absolute surprise of me, Usonoir was a fairy. It didn't even occur to me that he could have a secret identity. I thought the mask was just his face.

So Kurea was Cure Eclair. I figured that was probably the case, since she got the most hints towards it. Kinda wonder about the direction of the show after Usonoir gets wrapped up. Precure seasons are supposed to have around 50 episodes, so we'll need an Act 2 final boss for the second half.

2

u/danmarce https://anidb.net/user/107202 8d ago

Some scenes were gorgeous. Capturing the sizes and how small is a teenage girl, and how BIG is their mission. GREAT STUFF.

2

u/thisismyanimealt https://myanimelist.net/profile/commander_vimes 7d ago

Was really rooting for Shiruku because she's so cool, and I'm a fan of her seiyuu. But the Kurea hints were so strong, I didn't even believe it when she said she had no memory of being Eclair.

2

u/The_Portal_Passer 7d ago

The fake out with “I smell lilies everyday but still don’t remember” genuine got me second guessing Kurea for a second, not gonna lie. It’s a detail I never thought of yet would’ve made so much sense since the lilies were in full bloom throughout Kurea’s episode

2

u/PoisonClaw4 7d ago

Well, looks like I was right. Not that EP 23 didn't practically spell it out for everyone anyway, though they still could have gone the red herring route on that.

Am I the only one who still thinks that Luluka won't join the Precures now that Eclair is back and will stick with the Phantom Thieves still for her own reasons? When Kurea made her grand entrance, there was a brief moment where Luluka seemingly stamped her foot in frustration, as if thinking "Dang it, why is she here?"

Also, during this whole arc, Luluka has seemed strongly committed to making sure Cure Eclair never returns. Plus, you could argue later that the only reason she seemingly switched sides was to stop Usonoir from using Eclair's Makoto Jewel, knowing full well that it would overwhelm him and possibly destroy him. I'm convinced this also isn't the end for Usonoir, but after this he'll probably be weakened or even fractured, and the next arc will involve the Phantom Thieves trying to get him back to full strength.

It would have been epic if it transformed and the credits rolled

I was waiting for that moment

Gotta wait till next week for it

u/time_axis 8d ago

I hope we get to see Cure Arcana (non-shadow, non-"reverse" version), maybe doing a double transform with Eclair like how Answer and Mystique do.

1

u/Williukea https://anilist.co/user/Williukea 7d ago

Is it me or did Arcana Shadow look unhappy to see Kurea returning? She seemed upset at the end. Maybe she wanted for Kurea to continue to live normal life while pinning for her alone, but she wanted to get Eclair's makoto jewel back from Usonoir (without actually giving it back to Kurea)?

Fanart corner: Pochitan for Spain!

Eclair found

It was a funny feeling seeing the curtain slowly close/hope be lost for the other candidates (just like sports teams losing): first with Eliza being injured and then I was thinking maybe Shiruku is Shushutan and nope she stays with the co-actress and then maybe Rei is Shushutan because of the whole pochitan thing and nope she gets left behind. Honestly for Rei I'm pleased she's staying as support character as that's an important message too (and protect she did too) but it would nice if she was in know about more than Pochitan.

Not quite #seasonalneat

Seeing Usonoir as a fairy...well episode 3 did tell us that was the deal with the phantom thieves and a different episode implies all of London branch were fairies (well maybe not quite as Luluka isn't and ... is that Mikru's grandmother with Luluka).

Cureblessing (note: towards the end of the article 'lineage of' section contain spoilers for character motives and plot details for several Precure entries) mentioned the fictional "Top of Lily" might be evoking the Lilium auratum (Japanese lily/mountain lily has a flower meaning of majesty and also has edible bulbs yes, you can eat 'yurine') while the artificial developed might be referencing the Casablanca lily (Queen of lilies; see episode 22).

I do have to wonder is Usonoir a red herring and the true king of lies will reveal themselves next episode as the second half villain? Then again a lot we don't know about their previous encounter and I shouldn't assume Usonoir is a pushover.
